San Jose Earthquakes match wrap: Sounders edge Quakes in 3-2 match at Pay Pal

SAN JOSE–The San Jose Earthquakes were back on the road on Wednesday night, as they headed to Seattle for a midweek match against the Sounders.

Nick Fernandez got the Earthquakes on the board quickly, as the Sounders turned the ball over near their goal to Nonso Adimabua who found Fernandez in front of the goal. As a result, the Quakes were up 1-0 in the second minute of the match.

Despite testing the San Jose Earthquakes’ goalkeeper Daniel quite a bit throughout the first half, it took the Sounders until the 43rd minute to find an equalizer. Dave Romney was called for a foul inside the Quakes’ box, sending Albert Rusnak to the penalty spot. Rusnak beat Daniel and tied the game at a goal apiece. Reid Roberts was shown a yellow card in stoppage time.

Ultimately, the game went into halftime as a 1-1 draw.

The Quakes made a pair of changes to start the second half, with leading scorer Preston Judd entering the match alongside Ousseni Bouda.

In the 55th minute, Seattle midfielder Jesus Ferreira ran from his own half into the San Jose penalty area. He danced around the Earthquakes’ defender and beat the goalkeeper to give the Sounders their first lead of the night.

The Sounders defense seemed to be holding up in the 69th minute, but a shot was blocked right to the feet of Judd who tied the game once again.

The Earthquakes would ultimately lose the game in heart breaking fashion though, as Osaze De Rosario scored a header in the 89th minute to put the Sounders back on top.

With the loss, the Earthquakes now sit second in the Western Conference trailing the Vancouver Whitecaps on goal differential.

The San Jose Earthquakes looked to continue their hot start to the MLS season on Saturday morning as they visited Toronto F.C. north of the border forcing a 1-1 draw at BMO Stadium in Toronto.

Toronto didn’t wait long to put pressure on the Earthquakes, as Daniel Salloi was able to beat the Earthquakes goalkeeper, Daniel, with a shot from inside the box less than two minutes into the game.

Preston Judd scored his seventh goal of the season for the Earthquakes in the 14th minute to even things up at a goal apiece. Beau Leroux was shown the first yellow card of the afternoon in the 17th minute. Ronaldo Vieira was shown a yellow card in the 37th minute after a challenge from behind.

The game remained tied 1-1 heading into the halftime break.

Niko Tsakiris left the game in the 54th minute with an apparent injury. Nick Fernandez entered the game in his place.

The Earthquakes got away with an apparent handball in the 62nd minute, but there was no review and play continued. Judd nearly scored a second goal in the 65th minute, but the play was immediately called offside.

Toronto thought they took a lead in the dying moments of the game, but a sliding Reid Roberts kept the ball from crossing the goal line, keeping the game tied at a goal a piece. The play was reviewed, but the call was confirmed that there was no goal on the play.

Despite an abundance of scoring chances by both sides, neither team could break the deadlock and it would end in a 1-1 tie.

The Earthquakes will return home next weekend Sat May 9th as they take on the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The San Jose Earthquakes’ dominant start to the season continued just getting by St Louis FC 3-2 on Saturday evening as they visited St. Louis, Missouri to face St. Louis City SC.

Preston Judd opened the scoring in just the eighth minute, giving the Earthquakes an early 1-0 lead with his sixth goal of the season. With that goal, Judd is just one away from tying his career high of seven, which came last season.

San Jose’s goalkeeper, Earl Edwards Jr was forced to leave the game in the 24th minute, being replaced by Daniel. Nico Tsakiris and Ronaldo Vieira also entered the match at that stage, taking the places of Jack Skahan and Jonathan Gonzalez.

Shortly after the halftime break, the game did a complete 180. St Louis’s Sergio Cordova scored in the 52nd minute and then right on the following kickoff, Marcel Hartel gave St Louis the lead with a goal in the 53rd minute, making it a 2-1 game.

Timo Werner tied things up with a successful conversion on a penalty kick in the 69th minute, before Weren scored his second of the night in the 83rd minute to give the Earthquakes a late lead. The German forward also registered an assist on Werner’s opening goal, giving him three goal contributions on the night.

The Quakes held on to win 3-2, and maintained their sole possession of first place in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the loss was detrimental for St. Louis, who now sit second-last in the Conference, ahead of only Sporting Kansas City.

The Earthquakes will return home on Tuesday for a U.S. Open Cup matchup against Minnesota United FC before returning to league play in Toronto on Saturday morning.

Quakes make easy work of LAFC 4-1 in the Southland; Host Austin Wednesday night

The San Jose Earthquakes’ dominant start to the season continued on Sunday evening.

The Earthquakes traveled south to Los Angeles, specifically BMO Stadium to play the third-place team in the Western Conference and state rivals, LAFC.

After a scoreless first half, the Earthquakes’ offense came to play in the second 45 minutes. Shortly after Beau Leroux got a yellow card in the 51st minute, Ousenni Bouda scored his third goal of the season to give the Quakes a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute.

Just a few minutes later, the Quakes’ big-name signing from over the winter made his presence felt, as Timo Werner scored his first career MLS goal in the 56th minute.

LAFC defender Ryan Porteous accidentally extended the Earthquakes’ lead even further during the 58th minute, scoring an own goal and giving the Quakes a 3-0 lead.

The Earthquakes would eventually return the favor though, as Reid Roberts got LAFC on the board with an own goal of his own in the 74th minute, breaking the shutout.

Bouda then bookended the night with his fourth goal of the season in the 80th minute, securing a 4-1 victory for the Earthquakes.

The Earthquakes will return home for a midweek match on Wednesday against Austin FC before heading back on the road on Saturday.

The San Jose Earthquakes were on the road on Saturday evening, as they visited Sporting Kansas City in Kansas City, Kansas.The Quakes entered the night undefeated on the road and in the midst of an incredible start to the season overall. The Quakes improved their start of the season to a 6-1-0 record with the 3-1 defeat of Sporting KC.

Sporting Kansas City got out to an early lead, as Jacob Bartlett, their hometown kid, was able to beat Daniel to score his first career MLS goal in the 27th minute after a perfectly placed ball by Dejan Joveljic. The 20-year-old midfielders’ first goal, although against the Earthquakes, was a heartwarming moment as he was able to score at the same stadium that he grew up attending to watch matches in his youth.

Jack Skahan evened things up with his first goal since the 2024 season in the 44th minute.

There was a brief halt in play during stoppage time of the first half, as the lights in the stadium shut off momentarily, but play quickly resumed. The game would remain tied heading into halftime.

Skahan scored his second of the night in the 49th minute, making it his first career multi-goal game and the first multi-goal season of his career.

Kansas City’s Shapi Suleymanov picked up the first yellow card of the night in the 54th minute.

Defender Dave Romney would extend the Earthquakes’ lead in the 75th minute. The goal was his first as a member of the Quakes, and first overall since 2023 when he was a member of the New England Revolution. Ironically, both his lone goal with the Revolution and his goal on Saturday occurred with Bruce Arena on the sideline.

The Earthquakes held onto their lead and walked away with a 3-1 victory on the road. The win secured the Quakes second place in the Western Conference for the time being, as they trail only the Vancouver Whitecaps due to a tie breaker

The San Jose Earthquakes went on the road for Saturday night’s matchup against the undefeated Vancouver Whitecaps and handed the Whitecaps their first loss of 2026 with a 1-0 shutout at BC Place in Vancouver.

The Earthquakes were doing a good job putting pressure on the Whitecaps’ defense early on, but some errant passes and turnovers ruined some scoring chances.

Daniel was forced to make a big save in the 30th minute when AZ Jackson danced around the defense, firing a dangerous shot on goal. Moments later, Daniel was forced to make another big save to deny a Vancouver header attempt.

In the 31st minute, Timo Werner was shown a yellow card. Oddly though, Werner was sitting on the bench.

The Quakes had a great scoring opportunity in the 33rd minute. Preston Judd had a center pass which found Jamar Ricketts, but the ensuing shot went just wide of the goal.

Beau Leroux broke the deadlock in stoppage time of the first half with a shot from well outside of the box to make it 1-0 heading into halftime.

Both teams made a change to start the second half as Tomas Muller entered the game for Vancouver and Ian Harkes took the field for San Jose.

Werner and Vitor Costa entered the game in the 54th minute taking the place of Ricketts and an injured DeJuan Jones.

The Earthquakes maintained their lead for the second half, and ultimately walked away with a 1-0 victory over a very strong opponent.

Earthquakes blank Sporting KC 3-0

SAN JOSE–The San Jose Earthquakes kicked off the regular season on Saturday night as they hosted Sporting Kansas City in their home opener shutting out Sporting KC 3-0. Star signing Timo Werner remained out of the lineup for Bruce Arena’s side, as he continues to sort out visa issues for his move to the United States.

The Earthquakes applied a lot of pressure early, earning a couple of shots in the fourth minutes. Jamar Ricketts’ speed was doing wonders for the Quakes defensively as well, as he was regularly beating Shapi Suleymanov to the ball in the corner.

Ronaldo Vieira fired a shot from just outside of the 18-yard box that went narrowly wide of the goal, nearly giving the Quakes an early lead in the 12th minute. Roughly a minute later, Benji Kikanovic found Ousseni Bouda in quite a bit of space, but his shot was deflected out of play, and the Earthquakes were once again denied on a great scoring chance.

Beau Leroux became the third Earthquake to nearly get his team the go-ahead goal in the 29th minute, but again it went just wide. Suleymanov got a talking to from the official in the 32nd minute after a challenge on Ricketts led to some shoving and an Earthquakes free kick.

As the game seemed to be slipping out of the referee’s control, he showed Daniel Munie the first yellow card of the night in the 36th minute. In the 42nd minute, Munie would be the one to score San Jose’s first goal of the season. Off a Niko Tsakiris corner kick, the ball landed directly in front of the goal line, and Munie was able to put it past John Pulskamp, giving the Earthquakes a 1-0 lead. In stoppage time, moments after being the first to congratulate Munie, Preston Judd scored his first of the season, doubling the Earthquakes’ lead ahead of halftime.

Daniel made a big save early in the 49th minute to maintain the Quakes’ two-goal lead. Munie made it a brace with his second goal of the night with a header in the 55th minute, making it 3-0 for the Quakes.

Arena made a change in the 66th minute, taking out Vieira for Ian Harkes. Vitor Costa and Jack Skahan joined him on the pitch a few minutes later,0 taking the place of Judd and DeJuan Jones.

Paul Marie and new signing Jonathan Gonzalez were brought into the game with roughly ten minutes left in the game.

Ultimately, when the referee blew the final whistle, the Earthquakes walked away with a 3-0 victory to kick off their 2026 season.

Quakes get a 2-0 shutout over NYC FC at the Coachella Valley Invitational

The San Jose Earthquakes concluded their stint at the Coachella Valley Invitational on Saturday afternoon as they faced New York City FC in Indio.

It was a fairly uneventful first half in Indio, as both teams were unable to find the back of the net, taking the deadlock into halftime.

Hannes Wolf nearly gave NYCFC the lead in the 51st minute, but he was denied by Daniel. On the following corner, Daniel quickly gained possession of the ball for the Quakes.

Daniel Munie nearly deflected the ball into his own net about a minute later, but the Earthquakes goalkeeper remained vigilant.

The Earthquakes earned a dangerous free kick in the 61st minute, but the ball was deflected out of play for a corner.

San Jose got on the board first in the 71st minute, as Ousseni Bouda scored on a rebound chance, making it 1-0 for the Earthquakes.

Niko Tsakiris added to the Quakes’ lead in the 88th minute with a goal from a penalty kick. Minutes later, the final whistle blew and the Earthquakes were victorious, 2-0.

Now that preseason is over, their focus will turn to their home opener next Saturday against Sporting Kansas City.

San Jose Earthquakes match wrap: Marie breaks deadlock as Quakes edge Timbers 3-2

The San Jose Earthquakes continued their preseason as they faced off against the Portland Timbers in Indio on Wednesday evening.

Preston Judd opened the scoring for the Earthquakes in the 20th minute.

Kristoffer Velde tied things up in the 31st minute, getting the Timbers on the board. Five minutes later, Velde scored his second of the game with a header to give the Timbers their first lead of the night.

Ousseni Bouda was shown a yellow card in the 45th minute. The Timbers then carried their lead into the second half.

Nonso Adimabua got an equalizer for the Earthquakes in the 71st minute, tying the game at 2-2. Just three minutes later, Paul Marie scored the game-winning goal for the Quakes, giving them a 3-2 lead that they’d carry to the end of regulation.

The Quakes have one preseason game remaining, as they’ll face New York City FC on Saturday in a matinee matchup.

The San Jose Earthquakes kicked off their public preseason at the Coachella Valley Invitational as they faced off against Charlotte FC at Empire Polo Club, Indio, CA which concluded in a 2-2 draw.

San Jose Starting XI: Daniel, DeJuan Jones, Reid Roberts, Daniel Munie, Benji Kikanovic, Beau Leroux, Ronaldo Vieira, Niko Tsakiris, Jamar Ricketts, Ousseni Bouda, Preston Judd.

After a scoreless first half hour, the Earthquakes made a couple of changes bringing on Vitor Costa and Jack Skahan for DeJuan Jones and Preston Judd. 

Despite Charlotte controlling play toward the end of the first half, San Jose native Beau Leroux opened the scoring for the Earthquakes off of a pass by Ousseni Bouda, making it 1-0 in the 41st minute. A couple of minutes later, Ronaldo Vieira was shown the game’s first yellow card for a challenge on Luca De La Torre. 

The Earthquakes carried their lead into the halftime break. 

The Quakes came out of the gate with a lot of attacking pressure in the second half. There was a big collision between Jamar Ricketts and Jack Neeley when they were both looking up at the ball in the 53rd minute. Both returned to their feet, avoiding the worst possible outcome. Ricketts was shown a yellow card on the play. 

Wilfried Zaha and Vieira collided in the 60th minute causing another slight delay. Zaha was taken down again, this time by Leroux, right outside of the box  about a minute later. 

Just after the hour mark, the Earthquakes made quite a few changes. Daniel, Vieira, and Reid Roberts came out of the game, while Earl Edwards Jr, Dave Romney and Ian Harris came into the game.

Benji Kikanovic was shown a yellow card for a challenge on Zaha in the 65th minute. In the 67th minute, Charlotte got their best scoring chance to this point as they hit the goalpost. 

When all was said and done, the Quakes held on to their clean sheet and walked away with a 1-0 victory to kick off their preseason in Indio.
