The San Jose Earthquakes were back on the road for an important match against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night. The Quakes and Rapids battled to a 1-1 draw at Dicks Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City Colorado.

The Rapids, who are looking to claw their way into the playoff race, scored an early goal. Paxton Aaronson delivered a perfectly-placed cross off of a corner which found the head of Donovan Phillip who rose above the Earthquakes’ defense to put the ball past the Quakes’ goalkeeper, Earl Edwards Jr.

The Rapids then carried that lead into the second half, but an unexpected hero found an equalizer for the Earthquakes. Timo Werner crossed the ball into the box off of a free kick. Ronaldo Vieira was able to knock the ball down to the feet of Dave Romney who shot it past Colorado goalkeeper Nico Hansen to tie the game at a goal apiece.

Despite the fact that Colorado dominated the game in every statistical aspect, they weren’t able to take the lead in the one stat that matters most: goals. The Earthquakes were able to hold out for a draw to secure an important point for their playoff push.

It was a game that Colorado could have, and likely should have, walked away with the three points, but San Jose will take the results however they can get them.

San Jose will remain on the road for their midweek matchup against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday before returning home next Saturday as they host the Eastern Conference leaders, Nashville SC.
