The San Jose Earthquakes continued their road trip on Wednesday night as they visited Real Salt Lake. It was an important match as the Earthquakes were looking to climb to a higher seed for when playoffs come around, while Salt Lake is trying to make up ground on the LA Galaxy and Colorado Rapids for a playoff spot.
It was a back and forth, but relatively uneventful first half as neither team was able to get on the scoreboard. In fact, the first goal of the evening wouldn’t come until the 79th minute when Luc De Fougerolles was finally able to get a ball past Angus Gunn to get Real Salt Lake on the board using a set piece.
The only yellow card of the night came in the 92nd minute, as it was shown to Ariath Piol of Real Salt Lake. The Earthquakes were able to steal a point though, as Jack Jasinski was able to get a goal from almost the exact same spot as Fougerolles’ goal earlier in the night.
With this result, the Earthquakes pick up a second straight 1-1 draw and have gotten points in eight straight games as well. Angus Gunn deserves quite a bit of credit in this one, as he was able to make seven saves in order to keep the Earthquakes in it.
Statistically, this looks like a game that likely should have gone in Real Salt Lake’s favor. But the Earthquakes are looking to establish themselves as a top team in the MLS, and those teams always find a way to get some sort of result.
