SAN JOSE — Orlando City SC scored four unanswered goals in a dominating 4-0 clean sheet over the San Jose Earthquakes in the first match out of the World Cup break on Wednesday evening at PayPal Park.

San Jose has lost four out of its last five matches. Orlando City has won two matches in a row and had points in three out of its last four matches. With the Vancouver Whitecaps 4-3 loss to FC Cincinnati, San Jose remained tied with Vancouver for first place in the Western Conference.

San Jose (10-4-2-32 points) welcomed back striker Timo Werner back into the starting XI as he missed the past six matches dealing with a lower body injury. Goalkeeper Angus Gunn made his Earthquakes after being signed by San Jose two weeks ago on July 8. Gunn was one of the stalwarts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for his native Scotland. Gunn last played for Nottingham Forrest of the English Premier League and has 59 clean sheets in 218 EPL appearances. To make room for Gunn, the Quake traded Daniel to FC Dallas in exchange for up to $1 million in General Allocation Money.

Speaking of debuts, new striker Antoine Griezmann who was in the starting XI for Orlando City (5-9-2-17 points) and head coach Martin Pereiman. The star French forward and World Cup champion was signed by Orlando back on March 24 as a Designated Player.

Griezmann almost caught Gunn too far out from the goal in the fifth minute after Gunn came out to challenge ball outside the box. Griezmann’s long attempt was sailed high over the net.

Orlando City drew first blood in the seventh minute off a set piece. Eduard Atuesta’s free kick from the right wing sailed into the middle of the box where unmarked David Brekaio easily headed the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Beau Leroux had a chance in the 18th minute for an equalizer when he intercepted an Orlando City clearing attempt out of the box after Werner drove his way in from the left wing, but his cross was deflected away. Leroux’s shot attempt from just outside the box was saved by City goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau.

The Earthquakes thought they had tied the game in the 27th minute when Werner was sprung on a breakaway with a long ball into the middle. Werner was challenged by Crepeau before tapping it over to Daniel Munie who calmly put the ball into the back of the bet. The linesman called Munie offsides on the play as he left early before the pass was attempted.

Ivan Angulo doubled Orlando City’s lead in the 29th minute. Atuesta found Angulo with a pass to the right side. With all the time in the world, Angulo blasted a shot from 22 yards out past Gunn into the far-left corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

Griezmann recorded his first MLS goal thanks to a gift by San Jose in the 48th minute. A lazy back pass by Jamar Ricketts was intercepted by Justin Ellis just outside the box. Ellis quickly found Griezmann all alone inside the box where he made a move right then left before depositing the ball past Gunn for his 300th career goal among all competitions.

Crepeau made a diving save on a Werner chance a minute later as the Canadian goalie acted like a wall against the Quakes offensive attempts.

Orlando City scored its fourth unanswered goal in the 73rd minute on its second set piece of the match. Atuesta crossed the ball into middle of the box off of a corner kick and unmarked Braian Ojeda headed the ball just past the reach of a diving Gunn into the right corner of the net for his first goal of the season. Atuesta finished the match with three assists.

Crepau finished with six saves to earn the clean sheet. Gunn, who was at the mercy of his defense, made just one save on five shots attempts in his first match in a Quakes kit.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished the match with two corner kicks. Orlando City also had two.

On the Headline Sports podcast with London:

#1 The war of tweets and words has initially begun at the US World Women’s soccer matches between President Trump and US Women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe. Rapinoe originally took a knee during national anthems during the 2016 games. Now she stands without putting her hand over her heart unlike the rest of the teammates. Rapinoe said she will not visit the White House if the US team wins the championship. Trump says by her not doing it, Rapinoe is inappropriate and said she should win first before she talks.

#2 Rapinoe said that the reason she is protesting is because of unjustified treatment by police and law enforcement officials towards minorities and people of color. Rapinoe told American Soccer Now, “Being a gay American, I know what it means to look at the flag and not have it protect all of your liberties.” With the World Cup going on, this will most likely not be the last of the stand off between Trump and Rapinoe.

#3 We asked London about the World Cup putting up signs on the scoreboard indicating that there will game delays for replay reviews. This lends to fans following the games and thinking that their team has the game in hand, but they’ll wait until a replay review has been called for.

#4 After going five straight games without a loss the San Jose Earthquakes lost to LAFC who took it to the Quakes with a 3-1 win in Los Angeles last week on Thursday. For LA, Adama Diomande scored twice, which led LAFC to the two-goal win.

#5 The Quakes continue their road trip tonight against Houston at Avaya Stadium in San Jose as they face the Dynamo. The Dynamo are in fifth place in the MLS West at 7-3-4. The Dynamo are 2-1-3 in their last six games and have lost their last two games to Minnesota and Portland.

Quakes Squander Early Opportunities, Draw Against Dallas

By Shawn Whelchel

The San Jose Earthquakes had to swallow a disappointing nil-nil draw at home on Sunday evening, after a host of missed opportunities and a card-slinging ref was the only action the match saw.

The contest started with a streaky first half that saw both teams squander prime scoring opportunities under the hot San Jose sun. After a rather uneventful first 15 minutes of the game, the Earthquakes offense came to life after putting some early pressure on the Dallas defense and goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

It was then Dallas’ turn to return the favor, as Michael Barrios dribbled his way into the San Jose box, but was denied following an athletic save by Quakes keeper David Bingham, who punched the ball over the post to make the leaping save.

The Quakes responded by squandering perhaps the most opportune scoring chance of the first half. Cordell Cato sent a low, bouncing cross from the right side of the pitch that pulled Kennedy out of the goal. Both Mark Sherrod and Clarence Goodson had an attempt at a wide open net, but failed to put a foot on the manageable ball.

The Quakes would threaten one more time, this time on a bouncing header by Victor Bernardez that went high over the goal, before settling for a nil-nil draw heading into the half.

Although his team couldn’t capitalize on the scoring chances, head coach Dominic Kinnear liked the pressure his players were putting on Dallas’ defense.

“I’d rather be generating chances than taking chances the other way,” said Kinnear. “Sometimes scoring eludes ya, and it can be difficult, but I thought our effort was really good tonight.”

The second half saw more red cards than scoring opportunities for both teams, as referee Baldomero Toledo lived up to his trigger-happy reputation. The first came against the Quakes, as Sherrod attempted to stop over Kennedy, who had left the goal to smother a ball. Although seemingly incidental, Toledo sent Sherrod off to the displeasure of both the crowd and head coach Dominic Kinnear.

It was then Dallas’ turn to lose a player, as midfielder Je-Vaughn Watson would run into Cato, who was mid slide on a challenge, earning him an early exit from the game. The third, and final, card of the game was again against San Jose, as JJ Koval was sent off after a lunging challenge towards the foot of a striding Dallas player.

The string of red cards brought the game to a halt, disallowing both teams to gain rhythm or amass any real threat amidst the stoppages.

“I thought we were in for a good second half here,” said Kinnear. “They came out a little bit better in the second half, and then we started playing well. I thought Matias was playing really well for us as well, and then unfortunately the red card really changes things up in a negative fashion, probably for everybody except for Dallas.”

The Quakes had one scoring opportunity, stemming from a Chris Wondolowski header that bounced over Kennedy, but missed just a foot right of the post. The two teams traded possession, and players, before time ran out for a nil-nil tie to end what was a disappointing game for the Quakes.

Although the Quakes had numerous opportunities to earn a win, Kinnear wasn’t ungrateful for the single point his team earned in the tightly contested Western Conference.

“I think we are right in the middle with that one,” said Kinnear. “If you would have asked me at halftime I wouldn’t have taken a point. With the way the game was going I thought we were leaning on them a bit. Soon as you go down a man you obviously think the odds are stacked against you.”

The Earthquakes will stay in the South Bay for a match against Sacramento Republic FC on Tuesday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m.
