49ers fall to 4-6 on the year after 27-13 loss to the Saints in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Already dealing with a depleted roster, the 49ers needed to play near perfect against the Saints if they expected to leave the Crescent City with a win. San Francisco had their share of chances, but couldn’t overcome four turnovers as the Saints take down the 49ers with a 27-13 victory in front of approximately 6,000 fans inside the Mercedes Superdome on Sunday afternoon.

New Orleans (7-2) have now won six-straight games and send the 49ers to their third-straight loss this season. Its the first three-game losing streak for San Francisco since 2018.

The injury-laden 49ers (4-6) head into a much-needed bye week where they will try to regroup for the final six games of their season. San Francisco has little wiggle room if it expects to make the playoffs after playing the Super Bowl a season ago.

San Francisco’s next game will be at the Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 29 in what will be a must-win game for the 49ers. They’ve already taken the first matchup against the Rams, 26-14, back on Oct. 26 at Levi’s Stadium.

Nick Mullens, who was making his second-straight start and fourth of the year in place of regular starter Jimmy Garoppolo, started off the 49ers’ first possession sizzling, completing 6 of 7 passes for 47 yards and converting a couple of third downs on a 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive.

Mullens connected with rookie wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk on a 4-yard touchdown pass to cap off a drive that lasted 7 minutes, 17 seconds giving San Francisco an early 7-0 lead.

Aiyuk finished with seven catches for 75 yards and one touchdown while being targeted a team-high 14 times.

Mullens completed 24 of 38 passes for 247 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He was briefly removed from the game in favor of C.J. Beathard in the fourth quartere on a third-and-21 play because of Beathard’s stronger arm. Beathard underthrew the ball deep to wide receiver Richie James.

Mullens would return to the field on the next series.

San Francisco dominated New Orleans the first half, gaining more total yards (166 to 90) and first downs 13 to 6). The 49ers ran 40 offensive plays to the Saints’ 21 while controlling the time of possession (22 minutes to 8 minutes).

After jumping out to a 10-0 lead following a 32-yard field goal by kicker Robbie Gould early in the second quarter, special teams made some costly mistakes.

They gave up a 75-yard kickoff return to Deonte Harris to setup a field goal for the Saints that cut the lead to 10-3.

Later in the quarter, 49ers special-teamer Ken Webster found himself too close to a punt that Trent Taylor let land. The ball hit Webster in the face mask and the Saints recovered at the 49ers’ own 21-yard line.

Two plays later, the 49ers defense made a big play when defensive tackle Kentavius Street sacked Saints quarterback Drew Brees for an 8-yard loss. Brees was hurt on the play. Street’s first career sack was nullified by a questionable roughing the passer penalty after Street landed on Brees. Replays appear to show that Street turned his body to the side to avoid landing on Brees with his full body weight.

Backup quarterback Jameis Winston replaced Brees in the second half. Brees was ruled out of the game with a rib injury. He finished 8 of 13 for 76 yards and one touchdown.

That penalty appeared to be crucial as it led to a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Alvin Kamara three plays later that tied the game at 10-10.

New Orleans would add another touchdown before the end of the first half and take a 17-10 lead into the locker room at halftime after running back Jerick McKinnon was stopped for a 2-yard loss on fourth-and-1 from the New Orleans 41-yard line. Kamara scored his second touchdown in the first half on a 3-yard pass from Brees.

It was a calamity of errors for the 49ers in the game, but the 49ers had opportunities to pull out the upset on the road. Safety Jimmie Ward dropped a potential interception inside the Saints’ territory, but the muffed punt by wide receiver Richie James in the fourth quarter was the back breaker for San Francisco.

Kamara’s third score of the game (a 1-yard run) gave the Saints a commanding 27-10 lead with 7:29 left in the game. The Saints do-it-all running back finished with seven catches for 83 yards and a touchdown, while running for 15 yards on 8 carries and two touchdowns.

The 49ers would add a 40-yard field goal to cut the Saints’ lead to 27-13, but too little too late.

San Francisco’s inability to run the football was clearly evident from the Saints closing up any and all running lanes. The aforementioned McKinnon rushed for 33 yards on 18 carries. Rookie running back JaMychal Hasty rushed for 13 yards on 3 carries, but injured his clavicle on a tackle by Saints linebacker Demario Davis.

Rookie defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw had his best game of his career, registering 1.5 of San Francisco’s three sacks. Despite the final outcome, the 49ers defense played well holding the Saints to 237 total yards and 2 of 12 on third down.

Bruins defeat Cal in rare Sunday morning football battle 34-10

California spent its week preparing for a Pac-12 football game against Arizona State. The coronavirus pandemic provided the Golden Bears with a detour to Pasadena instead.

For their Pac-12 opener, the Golden Bears found themselves playing UCLA at the Rose Bowl on Sunday morning instead of facing ASU at Sun Devil Stadium on Saturday. UCLA romped past Cal 34-10.

The abrupt scheduling change was made due to COVID-19 issues at Arizona State, where a number of players and coaches, including head coach Herm Edwards, tested positive. The Sun Devils were unable to meet the conference minimum of 53 players in uniform.

The win evened the Bruins’ record at 1-1. Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw touchdown passes to Charles Njoku, Kyle Phillips and Chase Cota while completing 14 of 26 passes for 196 yards and one interception. Thompson-Robinson also ran for 52 yards and a touchdown.

Demetric Felton led UCLA with 107 rushing yards on 25 carries, and Brittain Brown added 71 yards and a touchdown. Greg Dulcich led the Bruins with three receptions for 80 yards.

The UCLA defense held the Bears to 54 rushing yards and 122 yards passing. Chase Garbers completed 18 of 33 passes with an interception and was sacked five times. Christopher Brown Jr. was Cal’s top rusher with 25 yards on eight carries.

Cal (0-1) opened the scoring at 11:28 of the first quarter with a Dario Longhetto 31-yard field goal. From there, it was all Bruins.

Thompson-Robinson’s 2-yard touchdown with just over a minute to play in the opening period put UCLA ahead to stay at 7-3. A 27-yard TD pass from Thompson-Robinson to Njoku extended the Bruins’ lead to 14-3.

Cal closed the gap to 14-10 on Garbers’ 8-yard touchdown run with 7:24 to play in the second quarter, but the Bruins responded with touchdown passes from Thompson-Robinson to Cota (6 yards) and Phillips (5 yards), giving UCLA a 27-10 halftime lead.

Brown’s 31-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter gave Cal a 24-point lead.

Cal travels to Oregon State (0-2) next Saturday.

On the 49ers podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Jeremiah, there has to be very little doubt that the 49ers (4-5) took a tough couple of loses and playing in just four short days for San Francisco with a vast injury list didn’t help either.

#2 Jeremiah, you got to see how the 49ers just struggled since losing their starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and really now depend on quarterback Nick Mullens, how much pressure has this been on Mullens.

#3 Talk about some of the key players the 49ers will miss out of their line up this Sunday in New Orleans going without Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson and will be replaced by JaMycal Hasty and Jerrick McKinnon in the back field.

#4 The New Orleans Saints (6-2) quarterback Drew Brees was limited in practice this week and was also limited leading up to last Sunday’s win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in that landslide 38-3. Do you see Brees getting just enough rest and practice to be ready against the 49ers this Sunday?

#5 Jeremiah break it down for us as the 49ers try and snap their two game losing streak in New Orleans on Sunday how do you see this match up?

San Jose Sharks podcast with Len Shapiro: Will Google and BART development give Sharks no choice but to leave San Jose?

SAP Center as it looked for the 25th Anniversary of the San Jose Sharks franchise the team might consider moving out of San Jose if Google, BART and other developments take over their parking, traffic, and parking concerns cut into their fan base. (file photo from NHL.com)

On the SJ Sharks podcast with Len:

#1 The San Jose Sharks say that parking and construction from the nearby Google project will cut into their parking lot. The Sharks who wrote a letter to their fans saying that they had concerns about Google taking part of the Sharks parking lot would cut into the team’s revenue.

#2 Did the City of San Jose have a hand in the planning because the Sharks are certainly a huge part of the South Bay sports community particularly in the San Jose city limits where they and the San Jose Earthquakes play and they would be a huge void if they left.

#3 Sharks president Jonathan Becher said the team supports development but said that the neighborhood shouldn’t have to be suffocated by a rash of 65 new buildings on 84 acres nearby the Caltrain station and BART station across the street from where the Sharks play. BART is expected to move in by 2030.

#4 Gridlock is a huge concern for the Sharks in the neighborhood with Google, fans coming to SAP Center, an expected 30,000 workers and 5,900 apartments for new housing.

#5 If the Sharks do get frustrated and move elsewhere they can’t move to Chase Center in San Francisco because they don’t have ice and in Sacramento at Golden One Center who also doesn’t have ice. The only place they can go to is the Oakland Coliseum Arena where they can fit ice but will the Sharks want to go Oakland and leave a downtown location?

Cal Bears Football podcast with Michael Duca: Covid cancels another game for Cal; Trip to ASU all for naught

Cal Bears and ASU Sun Devils kickoff on Sat Nov 14th at Frank Kush Field at Sun Devil Stadium (photo from calbears.com)

Cal Bears Football podcast with Michael Duca:

#1 Outbreaks have been the norm in college football Cal’s opener last week against Washington and this week at ASU was cancelled as in week one a player tested positive and his linemates were quarantined those same players are still in quarantined shortening the Bears defensive line forcing the game to be canceled.

#2 Midweek Cal head coach Justin Wilcox had to wonder if there would be a game at all. This week how hard is that on a coaching staff and the players when you have to stop and then prepare again.

#3 I know you’ve talked about the tight Covid-19 protocols from the Berkeley Public Health Department which has Cal’s entire defensive line under quarantine which expires Saturday night.

#4 The game for Saturday at ASU had been a question mark and the players have been working out and the defensive line have been allowed to do some individual supervised workouts.

#5 Wilcox said he’s complained regarding the way the Berkeley Public Health Department has handled deciding who sits on the Bears. Wilcox said they would like to know why that some of the players he has are in quarantine when they are negative.
