“The San Francisco 49ers has come to an agreement with the National Football League and Arizona Cardinals which allows the 49ers to host their Weeks 13 and 14 home games against the Buffalo Bills and Washington Football Team at State Farm Stadium in Arizona,” the 49ers said in a statement. The future practice facility for the team, to be announced.

Kyle Shanahan, coach of the 49ers was not very happy with Santa Clara County officials; “We’ve been working with them as a partner, just trying to figure it out,” Shanahan said. “For us to be heading out here yesterday and the relationship we have with them, for all of our players and coaches and everyone on that plane and our wives to find that out while we’re getting on a plane and no one to tell us. It was just extremely disappointing.”

The San Francisco 49ers have been playing in Santa Clara’s Levi Stadium since the facility was inaugurated in the 2014 season, now they will be playing in Arizona for a few weeks. This is because Santa Clara’s regulations about covid-19, which has changed much more than the 49ers but the whole sporting scene in the United States. How much have things changed with covid-19 and sports?

The 49ers playing in Arizona is not a big deal. Consider this; the Toronto Blue Jays of major league baseball were banned not only to play in Toronto, but it their own country of Canada! The Arizona Cardinals have allowed between 1,200 to 4,500 fans per game at their Phoenix home during the last few games and that would be the norm, more than likely for the games that the 49ers will play there.

During this covid 2020 crisis, many State and Local governments have been “all over the place” when it came to order and regulations, Governors of California and New York said one thing about the importance of wearing mask, but did the opposite as they were photographed in public.

The Mayor of Denver said that “people should not travel this Thanksgiving weekend” and within 30 minutes he was on a plane going to visit family. Other states and governments have gone as far as to tell people to “rat on their neighbors” if they see too many people going to a party, to call the police. This tactic is a page out of the communist playbook. I saw it first hand in Cuba. And while the big stores are open, a great amount of small businesses (especially small restaurants) are going out of business and may never be able to comeback.

Anybody that had been following the news, knows all experts on this novel virus warned us about this ‘second wave’. This should not have been a surprise, but be as it may, looks like it was to some people, others didn’t care and were tired of staying at home and felt they have all the information necessary to make a decision.

The fact remains that most people that get covid-19 suffer minor symptoms and recover.

On the Cal Bears football podcast with Michael:

#1 Michael, one thing you could say about that first half of the Big Game all indications was that this was going to be tight game no team was giving in. Cal (0-3) and Stanford (1-2) finished the first half to a 10-10 tie.

#2 Michael, in the second half it was very unfortunate for Cal time just ran out as the Bears picked up a touchdown in the third quarter and one in the fourth but the kicker  Stanford scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to edge Cal by one point.

#3 Stanford quarterback Davis Mills threw for 205 yards and one touchdown talk about the job he did and how the Cardinal offense performed against the Bears.

#4 Cal quarterback Chase Garbers looked like he had a good afternoon under center in spite of the loss throwing for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

#5 Oregon comes to Cal for the next home game next Sat Dec 5th at Memorial Stadium. The Ducks have won four straight games and have been a worthy opponent in the Pac 12.

Kicker Gould’s game-winning field goal boots 49ers past Rams, 23-20, in LA

LOS ANGELES — Heading into Week 12, the Los Angeles Rams sat atop of the NFC West while the San Francisco occupied the basement of the division.

For the first 2 1/2 quarters of Sunday’s game, it looked like the roles were reversed. For a second, the Rams appeared to regain the upper-hand before the 49ers would finish off the season thanks to Robbie Gould’s 42-yard field goal as time expired for a 23-20 upset victory in their first game at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

The win for San Francisco completes a season sweep over Los Angeles. It also gives the 49ers a four-game winning streak over the Rams and snaps their three-game losing streak. The 49ers improve to 5-6 on the season and remain in the hunt for a playoff spot in the NFC.

Three of the 49ers’ most important players returned to the field Sunday, each making big contributions to the win.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel who missed the last three games with a strained hamstring, had the biggest play from scrimmage for the 49ers in the first quarter. Samuel turned quarterback Nick Mullens’ short pass into a 33-yard pick up on the 49ers’ third possession of the game.

Three plays later, one play after a 26-yard gain from Samuel, running back Raheem Mostert rushed for an 8-yard touchdown slipping down the left sideline to give the 49ers a 7-3 lead.

Mostert who was making his return to the lineup for the first time since Week 6 (against the Rams), finished with 43 yards on 16 carries.

The offense was noticeably different with both Samuel and Mostert in the lineup. Samuel finished with career-highs in catches (11) and yards (133).

Mullens, albeit a bit shaky for most of the game, made plays down the stretch to put the 49ers in position to win. He completed 24 of 35 passes for 252 yards, no touchdowns and one interception that resulted on a tipped pass by Rams game-wrecker Aaron Donald that fell into the arms of Jordan Fuller.

Donald was essentially a non factor in the team’s first meeting, but was wrecking ball in today’s game.

With the 49ers holding a 17-6 lead midway through the third quarter, Donald split between right tackle Mike McGlinchey and rookie center Colton McKivitz and forced a Mostert fumble. Cornerback Troy Hill scooped it up and returned the fumble 20 yards for a touchdown to trim San Francisco’s lead to 17-13.

On San Francisco’s next possession, Donald sacked Mullens on first down for a loss of eight yards that led to a three-and-out. On the Rams’ next drive, rookie running back Cam Akers ripped off a 61-yard run to setup first-and-goal at the 49ers’ 6-yard line. Two plays later, Akers barrels his way into the end zone for a 1-yard score to give the Rams their first lead of the game, 20-17.

San Francisco’s offense committed three turnovers and finished 3 of 14 on third downs but it was the play by the defense, forcing four turnovers and the returning Richard Sherman that put the 49ers over the top.

Sherman, who hasn’t played since Week 1, made his presence felt early in the game when he intercepted Rams quarterback Jared Goff in the first quarter. Sherman would finish with a team-high seven tackles.

The front seven made life difficult for Goff all day, creating great pressure from defensive tackles Javon Kinlaw and Kevin Givens that allowed defensive end Kerry Hyder to feast.

Hyder recorded two sacks off Goff, who threw his second interception of the game in the third quarter to Kinlaw where the rookie returned it 27 yards to give the 49ers a 14-3 lead. Hyder leads the team with 7.5 sacks this year.

For the second time this season, the 49ers didn’t allow Goff to crack 200 yards passing as the Rams’ signal-caller finished 19 of 31 for 198 yards, no touchdowns, two interceptions and one fumble.

In the first matchup against San Francisco, Goff completed 19 of 38 passes for 198 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in San Francisco’s 24-16 on Oct. 18.

Goff entered Sunday’s contest after putting up 376 yards and three touchdowns (with two interceptions) on 39 of 51 pass attempts in the Rams’ 27-24 win over the Buccaneers on ESPN’s Monday Night Football at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

Safety Jimmie Ward forced two fumbles on the day, each recovered by Givens and Hyder.

Defensively, the 49ers held the Rams to 308 yards of total offense and 4 of 13 on third downs.

The 49ers are set to host games against the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 7 and Washington on Dec. 13 but due to a ban on contact sports by the Santa Clara County Public Health Department that was announced Saturday, San Francisco doesn’t have a venue as of yet.

Possible locations include Arizona and Texas according to multiple reports. Those are also the sites of the 49ers’ two final road games. The 49ers are scheduled to play at Dallas on Sunday, Dec. 20, and at Arizona on either Saturday, Dec. 26, or Sunday, Dec. 27.

#1 The 49ers return from their bye week to a inflating Covid list making some thinking if playing a contact game call NFL football during a pandemic was the wise choice at all. But either way the 49ers are preparing for their meeting with the Los Angeles Rams for Sunday.

#2 49ers running back Jerrick McKinnon during the week of practice said “that’s the 2020 season for you” regarding the fewer players available and on the Covid list not to mention San Francisco’s other list the Injured List.

#3 Lets take a look at the Covid list Jeremiah and please talk about the players who the 49ers will miss this weekend in LA, left tackle Trent Williams, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, nose tackle DJ Jones, defensive end Jordan Willis, linebacker Joe Walker, tight end Daniel Helm who is on the 49ers practice squad.

#4 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that it a probability that a number of those players could get into the game in LA on Sunday. How safe would a negative test give relief and confidence that it’s safe to be playing against or with someone who just got off the Covid list?

#5 The Rams are 7-3 first in the NFC West and are coming off a big win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the 49ers come into Sunday’s game after suffering three straight losses the game is in LA set this one up for us.

Stanford Cardinal post game report: Stanford wins a thriller as they defeat the California Bears 24-23

Stanford met the University of California for the 123rd time on Friday. The game was played at Memorial Stadium on the Cal campus with no fans in the seats. It didn’t matter as this was the Big Game. The storied rivalry between the two teams has captivated their fans for years.

Neither team had won a game this season. Each team had a game canceled due to Covid-19. The excitement was still palpable. The Bears won control of the Axe when they beat Stanford 24-20 last year. Stanford’s coach, David Shaw, improved to 9-1 against the Bears. Cal’s coach, Justin Wilcox, is now 1-3 against the Cardinal.

The game was, without question, one that either team could have won. The Bears had opportunities to win the game. They didn’t, as they made five critical mistakes that allowed Stanford to win 24-23.

The Cardinal blocked a Bear field goal attempt at the end of the first half that would have put the Bears ahead 13-10. They failed to make a fair catch. The fumble led to a Stanford score. Another fumble allowed Stanford to score their second touchdown of the game.

The Bears defense was called for a holding penalty. Stanford took advantage and put seven points on the board. The final mistake came late in the fourth quarter. The Bears started a game-tying drive from their ten-yard line. Led by quarterback Chase Grabers, the Bears marched down the field.

One of the key plays was Damian Moore’s 27-yard scamper. Grabers connected with Clark to get the ball down to Stanford’s 18-yard line. Cal running back Christopher Brown blasted through the Stanford line to get the ball inside the five-yard line. Two more plays moved the ball to the three. Brown scored to make in 24-23. Stanford then blocked the try for the extra point to destroy Cal’s hopes to tie the game and possibly win it in overtime.

In the first half, Cal’s offense scored the first touchdown of the game when Chase Grabers connected with Kekoa Crawford for the score. Cal’s defense played well in the first quarter keeping Stanford off the board.

The Bears led 7-0 after the first fifteen minutes of play. The Cardinal’s Jet Toner kicked a field goal to start the second period to make it 7-3. The Bears regained the seven-point advantage when Grabers made two great runs to get the ball into the red zone. The Bear drive stalled at the 7-yard line. Cal kicker David Longhetto made the field goal to put the Bears ahead 10-3.

Things started going south for the Bears when Remigio muffed the punt. Stanford recovered on the Bears 16-yard line. Davis Mills connected with Mike Wilson to tie the game 10-10 with 2:09 left in the first half.

The Bears mounted a drive that got them to the Cardinal 15-yard line with just eight seconds left. Stanford was guilty of pass interference on the play. Grabers pass into the end zone was incomplete. Stanford blocked the Bear’s field goal try. The half ended tied 10-10.

Davis Mills was 13 for 17, good for 104 yards and one touchdown. Austin Jones had five carries for just twelve yards. Mike Wilson caught five passes for 55 yards and one touchdown. Chase Grabers was 12 for 15 for 98 yards and a touchdown. He led the Bears in rushing with five carries for 32 yards.

Stanford took the lead for the first time in the third quarter. The Bears fumble, recovered by Stanford on Cal’s 40-yard line, allowed Stanford to put more points on the board. Mills’ pass to Wilson took Stanford inside the ten-yard line.

Jones took the ball to the three and then to the house to give Stanford a 17-10 lead. Cal stormed back to tie the game. Running back Damien Moore ripped off a 54-yard run. Grabers connected with Nikko Remigio for the score to tie the game 17-17.

Mills was taking the Cardinal downfield once again. It looked like the Bears had stopped the Cardinal drive when the Cal defense intercepted Mills’ pass. The referees called a holding penalty, and Stanford retained control of the ball. The Cardinal took the ball down to the Bears’ eight-yard line. Austin Jones rammed his way into the end zone for the tally. 24-17 Stanford advantage.

The Bears started the tying drive on their ten-yard line. They marched down the field for the score. With 62 seconds left in the game, Christopher Brown scored. All Cal had to do was make the extra point, and the game would be tied.

Cal coach Justin Wilcox had an option. He could have asked his team to go for a two-point conversion. If Cal made it, they would have won. Wilcox went for the safer option. Make the extra point, and Cal will take its chances in overtime. Stanford’s defense rose to the occasion and blocked the kick. Stanford won and reclaimed the Axe.

Game stats- Davis Mills was 24 for 32, good for 205 yards and one TD. Grabers was 19 for 29 for 151 yards and two TDs. Austin Jones had 18 carries for 72 yards and two TDs/ Cal’s Damien Moore rushed ten times for 121 yards. Mike Wilson had seven catches for 88 yards and one TD. Kekoa Crawford had five receptions for 52 yards and one TD.

Cal basketball in the win column with blowout of Northwest WA, 86-61

It’s not the distinction the Cal athletic department was looking for but hey, it’s 2020 and just about anything goes.

The Cal men’s basketball team has a win at least a day before the Cal football team gets its initial win. Call it calendar confusion or a COVID cancelations conundrum, the Bears hoopers have their first win, 86-61 over Northwest (WA) a day before the Cal football team (0-2) faces Stanford in the Big Game.

Normally, the overlap between college football and college basketball is brief, but nothing is normal this season. In fact, it wasn’t until midway through this week that the Bears found out they would be playing on Thanksgiving day.

But once the novelty of it all played out the Bears got down to business, decimating the NAIA Eagles with a 27-4 run early in the first half on their way to a 20-point halftime lead and a 25-point win.

Five Golden Bears scored in double figures led by Ryan Betley with 14 points, nine rebounds. Andre Kelly an Matt Bradley each scored 11 points, Makale Foreman and Joel Brown each had 10.

Mark Fox jumbled his lineup, inserting Foreman, Kuany Kuany and D.J. Thorpe as starters after the team started sluggishly on Wednesday versus OSU. Fox took advantage of the big lead by getting playing time for his entire roster with Logan Alters, Blake Welle and Jalen Celestine making their season debuts.

The two schools were originally scheduled for Friday afternoon but the late scratch of the Colorado State Rams due to COVID issues forced the teams to move up 24 hours to accommodate a newly scheduled Northwest (WA)-Oregon State matchup on Friday.

The Bears return to the Bay Area early in anticipation of their home opener against Nicholls of the Southland Conference on Monday night.

#1 Dallas Cowboys strength and conditioning coach Markus Paul passed away at age 54 on Wednesday. Paul was listed in serious condition and was attended to by Cowboys medical personnel and paramedics after getting sick at the Cowboys Frisco Texas facility on Tuesday. Paul who played at Syracuse still holds the all time interception record for the Orange at 19.

#2 Former Cal and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff threw for 376 yards and three touchdowns against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football for a 24-17 win.

#3 The win puts the Rams in first place in the NFC West at 7-3 and the Rams have won three of their last four games and are favored to win the NFC West title.

#4 There’s been a lot of discussion about how Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady shined on Rams quarterback Jared Goff after the game. Brady caught a lot of heat for not meeting Goff on the field after the game for the customary handshake.

#5 The San Francisco 49ers are down nine players who are on the Covid-19 list. The 49ers have added two more players nose tackle DJ Jones and defensive end Jordan Willis. The 49ers have a number of injuries but having up to eight players on the Covid list certainly doesn’t help.

On the Cardinal Football podcast with Jerry F:

#1 The Stanford Cardinal whose last game was canceled due to a Coronavirus outbreak as they were scheduled to play the Washington State Cougars at Stanford on Saturday. It was a setback because the Cardinal are still looking to get their first win of the season.

#2 Jerry it’s been two weeks since the Cardinal have seen game action that was going back to playing against the Colorado Buffaloes at Stanford on Nov 14th in a close 35-32 loss. Not playing for two weeks certainly is too much time away from competition and it takes away a team’s timing and executing the playbook.

#3 For Cardinal quarterback Davis Mills in his last outing against the Buffaloes 327 yards passing and one keeper. Davis was key in the Cardinal high scoring game despite the loss he was key under center.

#4The Cardinal did get a lot of offensive yards and was in a shootout can you see them having that same momentum going into the Big Game this Friday night at Cal?

#5 Both Stanford and Cal have had two loses and have had two games canceled due to Covid issues. Both teams are hoping for no outbreaks and to get a game in and most importantly to get in the win column. Jerry how do you see this anticipated Big Game on Friday night.

Cardinal men’s basketball opener scrapped due to COVID-19 concerns; Team heads to Alabama for Monday game

Stanford was supposed to open its men’s basketball season on Wednesday against Utah Valley, but the Cardinal will have to wait a few days to get started.

Wednesday’s game against the Wolverines was cancelled, declared a no contest, and will not be made up. The cancellation was a result of positive COVID-19 test results and subsequent contact tracing within the Utah Valley program, according to the Stanford web site.

Both programs are exploring options to replace the game.

Stanford is scheduled to face Alabama on Monday in the opening round of the Maui Invitational at Asheville, N.C.
