Oakland A’s podcast with Barbara Mason: Langliers ends A’s 81 triple-less drought with 8th inning triple

The Oakland A’s Shea Langliers is excited about his eighth inning triple against the Seattle Mariners at the Oakland Coliseum on Sun Aug 21, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the A’s podcast with Barbara:

#1 Since joining the Oakland A’s catcher Shea Langliers has been a huge plus in the A’s line up and Sunday afternoon was no exception as Langliers ended the A’s 81 game tripleless drought in the bottom of the eighth inning to help defeat the visiting Seattle Mariners at the Oakland Coliseum 5-3.

#2 Langliers on the afternoon clouted a total of three hits as one of those ended the 81 game tripleless drought a Major League record that last happened back in 1901. Langliers now has two triples this season the other was in triple A baseball.

#3 Langliers belted the eighth inning triple that went off the left field wall that went far enough that Mariners leftfielder Dylan Moore had to chase it down and it gave Langliers time to safely reach third base. Langliers said after the game that he got lucky that the ball kicked off the wall long enough for him to get time to reach third.

#4 JP Sears has been sharp in his outings for Oakland (5-0) threw for five innings of work with six hits one earned run, a walk and three strike outs. The only run Sears surrendered was a home run to the M’s Mitch Haniger in the top of the third inning.

#5 The A’s open up a three game series Monday night against the Miami Marlins. Starting for the Marlins Edward Cabrera (3-1, 1.78) and for the A’s Adam Oller (2-5, 6.63) a 6:40 first pitch at the Oakland Coliseum.

San Francisco Breaks Four-Game Losing Streak Beats Colorado In 11th Inning 9-8

San Francisco Breaks Four-Game Losing Streak Beats Colorado In 11th Inning 9-8

By Barbara Mason

Sunday afternoon the Colorado Rockies (53-70) and Coors Field hosted the San Francisco Giants (60-61) in the final game of their three game series. The Rockies took the first two games of the series and the Giants were hoping to avoid the sweep.

Unlike the first two games, San Francisco got on the scoreboard early. Brandon Crawford singled in the second inning driving in Evan Longoria for an early 1-0 lead. The Giants extended their lead in the same inning when Austin Wynns also singled driving in Thairo Estrada, the score now 2-0.

Just when it looked like the Giants had something going in this game, Colorado tied it all up in the fifth inning. Brian Serven sent a bullet out of the park and Sam Hilliard scored. The Rockies had evened the score at 2-2.

In the seventh inning, the Giants after four quiet innings, erupted with an Evan Longoria homer with the bases loaded. Mike Yastrzemski, Austin Slater and J.D. Davis all scored giving San Francisco a 6-2 lead. The Rockies added another run in the seventh inning off a Elehuris Montero solo home run.

The Giants were leading after eight innings 6-3 and Colorado was running out of time if a sweep was in their future. Although the Giants only had seven hits in the game the turning point was the grand slam from Longoria.

The Rockies continued to hang around and scored a run in the eighth inning. Charlie Blackmon singled driving in Ryan McMahon, the Rockies now trailing 6-4. Colorado tied up this game when Randal Grichuk homered and Blackmon scored. San Francisco found themselves in the same position as they did yesterday; tied up going into the ninth inning.

Neither team could finish this game off in the ninth inning and again the teams went into extra innings, a repeat of yesterday’s game. Unlike yesterday, the Giants took the lead in the tenth inning Thairo Estrada singled driving in Joc Pederson for a 7-6 lead.

The Giants would add to that lead off a Wynns double that scored Estrada. Leading 8-6 San Francisco was three outs away from breaking their four-game losing streak.

The Giants were not off the hook by a long shot. In the bottom of the tenth inning Colorado’s McMahon hit a single and Bernard on second scored, now only trailing by a single run. Blackmon would remedy that.

He singled driving in McMahon and we had a tie game 8-8. With the bases loaded and two outs, Colorado was looking for the sweep. San Francisco held on and this game was on to 11th inning.

Wilmer Flores hit a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning giving the Giants back the lead 9-8. Yastrzemski scored the run that would prove to be the winner. The San Francisco Giants were able to grind this one out the final 9-8.

They had to pull out all the stops to win this game and put an end their losing streak. It was long and at times ugly but the Giants refused to give this game away.

Tuesday night the Giants begin a two-game series with the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit. San Francisco will be sending ace Carlos Rodon to the mound with a 2.89 ERA and an outstanding win/loss record of 11-6. The Giants offense will be facing Tiger pitcher Drew Hutchison (1-6, 4.23). First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM PT.

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 Joe, there was a combination of back up in Saturday night’s game in Minnesota for head coach Kyle Shanahan to evaluate we’ll start with the back up quarterbacks vying for a job at the quarterback position Brock Purdy and Nate Sudfeld what impressed you most about their work under center?

#2 Sudfeld went 13-17 for 102 yards and a touchdown he’s been getting a lot of looks in the last two pre season games.

#3 Brock Purdy could end up as the third stringer for Trey Lance, Purdy 14-23 for 128 yards from the sound of head coach Kyle Shanahan he’s pretty keyed in on Purdy.

#4 Joe, talk about the defense they held the Vikings to seven points is this reflective of the kind of defense the 49ers will have in the regular seaon?

#5 49ers return back to Santa Clara on Thu Aug 25th against the Houston Texans. Will Lance get to play the first half in this one and what are some of the things that coach Shanahan looks for in this final pre season game.

Earthquakes stun LAFC with dramatic upset in 2-1 win

SAN JOSE — The MLS version battle of David versus Goliath went David’s way in a shocker.

Cade Cowell scored the game winning goal in the 77th minute as the San Jose Earthquakes pulled off a dramatic upset over LAFC, the best team in the league, 2-1 on Saturday evening at Pay Pal Park.

In front of a sold out crowd, in what had a playoff atmosphere like feeling, the ‘Quakes won for just the second time in its last eight matches. On the flip side, LAFC had its seven match winning streak snapped.

“Emotions are high right now. We need to be calm, but I believe tonight is one of the best games I have seen from this team this season. When you lose, you ‘stink’ and when you win, everybody wants to talk good things about you. The guys showed that we have personality and played good with and without the ball. And we did it,” interim head coach Alex Covelo said.

Cowell was set up by the Man of Match, Tommy Thompson, who had two assists on the night. Thompson ran down a ball near the end line when he centered the ball back into the middle where an unmarked Cowell blasted a one-timer top shelf past LAFC goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau for his second goal of the season.

“For me personally, it felt great to put in a good shift with the team, but I give a lot of credit to all the guys out there that fought until the end right in the middle of the difficult moment that we’re in. I think it’s exciting and it’s a night that I won’t forget anytime soon,” Thompson said.

San Jose (6-11-9-27 points) drew first blood in the 14th minute. Benji Kikanovic began a counter attack for the ‘Quakes. Christian Espinoza found Thompson along the end line and he chipped the ball over a LAFC defender to Kikanovic who buried a one-timer into the upper left corner for his fifth goal of the season.

LAFC (18-5-3-57 points) had trouble containing San Jose’s attack in the first half as they were playing back on the heels for the first 45 minutes.

The start of the second half saw LAFC change the momentum with chances early on. They cashed in the 54th minute on a brilliant play from Kellyn Acosta. The current USNMT’s midfielder glided a pass over to Kwadwo Opoku, who got behind Nathan on the play, and he chipped the ball over ‘Quakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski for his seventh goal of the season.

Covelo made substitutions in the 69th minute as he brought Cowell and Eric Remedi that helped switch the momentum back to San Jose.

Despite bringing in a powerhouse trio off the bench in the second half that consisted of 2019 MLS MVP Carlos Vela, Illie Sanchez and Jose Cifuentes, LAFC was not only able to score the equalizer but lost their composure in the process as their frustrations of being outplayed grew bigger down the stretch with ugly fouls that went for yellow cards.

Sanchez received two yellow cards in just 15 minutes of action when he was sent off for his second infraction and automatic red card in the 79th minute. Sanchez will be suspended for LAFC’s next match against the Austin FC on 8/26.

Marcinkowski finished the match with one save on two shots on goal. Crépeau made three saves on five shots in the losing effort.

Welsh international midfielder Gareth Bale made an appearance as a substitute in the 76th minute when he replaced Opoku. He has played in eight games with LAFC since being transferred from Real Madrid back in June.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished the match with 11 corner kicks. LAFC had five.

San Jose is now 5-7-0 all-time vs. Los Angeles Football Club, including a 4-2-0 record at home. San Jose is now 5-2-0 in their last seven meetings with LAFC, including three straight home wins.

The Earthquakes are now 6-7-6 in MLS play under Covelo.

UP NEXT: San Jose travels out to the Midwest to take on Sporting KC on Saturday 8/27 at 5:30pm at Children’s Mercy Park.

Rocks Beat Giants in tenth 4-3; SF suffers fourth loss in a row

Rockies Beat Giants In Tenth Inning 4-3.

By Barbara Mason

Saturday evening the San Francisco Giants (59-60) were back at Coors Field taking on the Colorado Rockies (53-69) in game two of their three game series and just couldn’t hold on and lost in ten innings 4-3. Friday night the Giants lost game one 7-4 despite a valiant effort in the seventh inning scoring three runs.

Saturday game recap: The Rockies were first up on the scoreboard in the third inning scoring twice for the 2-0 lead. Brendan Rogers doubled driving in Jose Iglesias for the first run. Ryan McMahon would follow that up with a single that drove in Rogers.

San Francisco would tie up this game 2-2. Both runs came off solo homers; the first in the sixth inning off the bat of Joey Bart. In the seventh inning Brandon Crawford homered to right center field and we had a tie ball game.

The Rockies wasted no time regaining the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Wynton Bernard singled driving in Sam Hiliard going back on top 3-2. Colorado would take the 3-2 lead into the ninth inning. The Giants were three outs away from losing game two of this series.

Tommy LaStella hit a single in the top of the ninth inning and San Francisco was still alive with two outs. Austin Slater came in to run for LaStella. Brandon Crawford doubled driving in Slater and the Giants had tied up the game 3-3. San Francisco held the Rockies in the bottom of the ninth with a six pitch inning and this game was going into extra innings.

The Rockies won this game in the tenth inning, a walk off for the 4-3 win. Brandon Rodgers singled to center and Wynton Bernard crossed home plate for their second win in this series. San Francisco had lost their fourth game in a row. San Francisco only had five hits in the game while Colorado had 12. The Giants offense continues to struggle. They got some monster hits from Brandon Crawford in this game but it was just not enough.

San Francisco will play a day game Sunday to finish off this series. They will try to avoid the sweep sending Jakob Junis to the mound with a 3.53 ERA and a 4-3 win loss record. Colorado will send Kyle Freeland 7-8 with a 4.82 ERA, the best pitcher that the Giants have faced in this series. First pitch is scheduled for 12:10 PM PT.

49ers offense sloppy, defense the star of the show in 14-7 preseason win over Vikings

It’s only the preseason but things need to get cleaned up on the offensive side of the ball.

The San Francisco 49ers had another stellar performance by their defense, while the offense looked in preseason form in their 17-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday evening at U.S. Bank Stadium.

San Francisco improved to 2-0 on the preseason, while Minnesota dropped to 0-2.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had his backup quarterbacks rotating every two series to start the game. The majority of the offensive and defensive starters, including Tre Lance and Fred Warner, sitting this one out as this was an opportunity for guys on the bubble to make an impression before the cutdown to from 85 to 80 happens on August 23rd.

The defense stood out on the Vikings first drive. An outside corner blitz led to Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond to force a throw up in the air only to have 49er cornerback George Odom intercept the ball and return it for 34 yards.

Another welcome sighting was the play of defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw. He recorded one sack and was in the backfield during his time in the first half. It was Kinlaw’s first game action since he tore his ACL last October.

The offensive side of the ball was another story in the first half. A combination of dropped by balls by three different players, penalties, bad pass protection from the offensive line led to just two Robbie Gould field goals as San Francisco trailed Minnesota 7-6 at halftime.

The 49ers were 1/7 on third down conversions and 0/2 on fourth down conversions in the first half.

San Francisco’s defense had three takeaways during the game and have six in the first two preseason games with five interceptions and one fumble recovery. The combo of Malik Turner and Sam Womack III were responsible for the fumble recovery.

Nate Sudfeld led a 14-play, 79 yard drive at the end of third quarter that resulted in a JaMycal Hasty two-yard rushing touchdown to give the Niners a 14-7 lead with 14:57 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Sudfeld finished the game 13 of 17 for 102 yards and one touchdown. Brock Purdy was 14 of 23 for 128 yards and no interceptions. Neither separated themselves for the backup quarterback job as they both played better in the second half.

Mond finished 10 of 20 for 82 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Sean Mannion was 10 of 15 for 65 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

GAME NOTES: 49ers offensive lineman Alfredo Gutierrez made his NFL debut in the final two minutes of the game and received the game ball from Shanahan.

UP NEXT: San Francisco finishes out the preseason against the Houston Texans on Thursday 8/25 at 5:15pm at NRG Stadium.

Neuse’s infield grounder scores Kemp from third for walk off in 10th; A’s defeat M’s 4-3 snap 3 game skid

Seattle (66-55). 3. 7. 1

Oakland (44-77). 4. 8. 0. 10 innings

Saturday, August 20, 2022

By Lewis Rubman

OAKLAND–The Oakland Athletics always find a new way to surprise you. After publishing their starting lineup the team announced a change. Skye Bolt had injured his knee and had to be scratched.

This had a domino effect that included moving Chad Pinder from left to Bolt’s spot in right, shifting Kemp from second base to left, and inserting Jonah Bride as the second baseman This called for some juggling of the batting order, with third baseman Vimael Machín moving up from the seventh to the sixth spot and Bride filling the resultant void.

Before the game, the A’s announced the acquisition on waivers of right handed reliever Joel Payamps from the Kansas City Royals, replacing Oakland’s lone representative on this year’s AL All Star game, Paul. Blackburn, whom they placed on the 60 day IL.

If the team hoped to surprise its followers with a win, following last night’s 10-2 humiliation at the hands of the Seattle Mariners, they sure as hell succeeded. They pulled off a come from behind 4-3 victory. The baseball sure takes funny bounces. Just ask Mariner first baseman Ty France.

James Kaprielian, the A’s starting pitcher, began the day’s work with a record of 3-7, 4.33. He hadn’t gone deeper than six innings in any of his 16 starts this year. In one of those six frame stints, he beat the Mariners, holding them to one run, which was earned, in a 3-1 Oakland win at T Mobile Park on July 1.

That was his only time he had faced the M’s this season. He threw five innings against them today, leaving the game with the A’s trailing 2-0. Both of those runs were earned; they came on three hits and four walks. Kaprielian struck out three, and 47 of his 78 offerings were counted as strikes. He got a no decision, ending his day with a record of 3-7, 4.29.

Kaprielian’s opposite number was Logan Gilbert, making his second appearance of 2022 against the A’s. He had beaten them the day before Kaprielian’s win in Seattle, but hadn’t exceeded the limits of mediocrity with four earned runs yielded on eight hits over six frames.

Gilbert’s season record entering today’s contest was 10-5, 3.51, too, was on the mound for five innings and allowed two earned runs. But he also surrendered an unearned one for a total of three. He yielded six hits without granting a free pass, and he notched four Ks. He threw 66 pitches; 20 were balls. Like Kaprielian, he wasn’t involved in the decision, leaving him 10-5 but raising his ERA a smidgen to 3.52 for the year.

Seattle avoided The Curse of the Leadoff Double when Julio Rodríguez led off with a towering triple that bounced off the wall in right center field. Ty Franco promptly drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left center.

The M’s hit another three bagger in their half of the fourth. With a man down, Eugenio Suárez lifted a high fly to deep right field, in front of the Budweiser Terrace. Pinder jumped for the ball at the fence, and the ball landed on the dirt to his right.

It had been clear all game that the fielders were having trouble with the bright sunlight, and this meteorological phenomenon cost the A’s a run when Adam Frazier sent Kent sprawling on the left field warning track dirt to catch his sacrifice fly. It now was 2-0 in favor of the visitors.

Murphy’s leadoff line drive in the bottom of that inning provided a scary moment. It banged off Gilbert’s leg, visibly shaking him up and, incidentally, went for a single. But Seattle’s starter shook off the pain and made a neat play on Voght’s comebacker that followed Murphy’s hit, converting it into a 1-5-3 double play, with third sacker Suárez taking the throw at second.

It was in the fifth that Oakland erupted. Machín led off with a grounder to second that Frazier couldn’t handle. Bride followed that with a single to left center. Allen then hit a fly to right that Jake Lamb lost in the sun.

That went as a single, unlike Frazier’s misplay, which was scored as an error. (Both scoring decisions were correct). Stevenson advanced the two runners with a sacrifice bunt to third, and Kemp’s single to center brought both of them home with the A’s second and third runs. They now were in front of Seattle, 3-2.

AJ Puk pitched a scoreless top of the sixth in relief of Kaprielian. Matthew Festa did as much for the M’s in the bottom of the frame.

Domingo Acevedo took over mound duties for the green and gold in the top of the seventh and, with a little help from a pitcher’s best friend, emerged unscathed.

Erik Swanson replaced Festa following “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” and also kept Oakland off the board.

Zach Jackson had to face the heart of the Mariners’ order when he entered the fray in the visitors’ eighth. Cleanup hitter Mitch Haniger touched him for a one out single to center, and one out later, Oakland nemesis Eugenio Suárez drove him in with a game tying single to left.

Paul Sewald was on the hump to face the Athletics in their half of the frame. He walked Sheldon Neuse, pinch hitting for Vogt, and then retired Pinder on a pop up that second sacker caught while dashing into right field.

Machín took a called third strike before Bride sent Dylan Moore, who had entered the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh, almost to the right field warning track to haul in his high and deep fly for the final out.

It fell to Dany Jiménez to attempt to preserve the tie through the top of the ninth. Raleigh went down swinging for the first out. Carlos Santana pinch hit for Moore. He lined a scorcher up the middle, but Allen, who was perfectly positioned in the shift, fielded the ball cleanly and shot it to first for the second out.

His diving backhand attempt to catch Rodrígiuez’s drive into left, however, wasn’t successful, and Ty France, batting .288 with 14 homers came to the plate with the potential leading run on first. Rodríguez swiped second, and potential tie breaker now was in scoring position. With the count a 2-1, France hit a hard line drive to left that Kemp corralled to end the threat.

Now it was the turn of Seattle’s Andrés Muñoz to pitch a pressure packed episode. He began by whiffing Allen on a 3-2 slider. Stevenson, who had gone two for two, also went down swinging. It now was Muñoz versus Kemp, mano a mano. Muñoz won, striking out the veteran on three pitches.

We went into extra innings with Jiménez. still on the hill for Oakland and France on second as the zombie runner. Winker lined out to first, bringing up Haniger. He hit a grounder to short. France unwisely tried to advance. Allen threw him out at third. The shift once more proved to be the right move for the A’s when Crawford hit a sharp line drive to Bride, stationed in shallow center field.

Diego Castillo came on for the bottom of the tenth and immediately granted an intentional walk to Brown with Kemp on second as the mandated runner. Murphy walked to load the bases. Then Neuse sent a little nubber to the right of the pitcher’s mound. France couldn’t handle it. The play went into the books as a fielder’s choice, and the Athletics had pulled off an improbable victory.

The rubber game of this series will start tomorrow at 1:07. Oakland’s JP Sears (4-0, 1.95) will go against Seattle’s Luis Castillo (1-0, 2.18). Who knows what surprises are in store for us?

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

#2 Rich, Garbers executed what he learned at Cal with a few keepers while under center with two carries for 46 yards.

#3 Zamir White Raiders running back carried five times for eight yards and a touchdown he’s looking to break in the line up.

#4 For the Raiders wide receivers Jesper Horsted and Keelan Cole led in carries with three didn’t score a touchdown but McDaniels got them some looks while on the run.

#5 Rich last pre season game will be at Allegiant Stadium on this Fri Aug 26th there is little doubt that McDaniels will get quarterback Derek Carr a few snaps in that one just before the regular season starts.
