Who is buying the Los Angeles Angels?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Arturo (Arte) Moreno bought the LA Angels in 2003 for $184 million. It is now worth about $2 billion. Moreno’s is the first Hispanic-American ever to own an MLB franchise, and now they are for sale. Among the people looking to buy the Angels is Joe Lacob, owner of the Golden State Warriors, who has previously expressed interest in buying an MLB team.

Mr. Lacob once offered to buy the Oakland A’s and said he believes the team belongs in Oakland. According to an interview with John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, Lacob told Shea his offer to buy the A’s was for $180 million in 2005. How much are the A’s worth today? Most MLB teams are worth a minimum of $1 billion.

Warriors owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber could have some competition from other interested parties like LA Rams owner Stan Kroenke, LA Lakers part owner Dr.Patrick Soon-Shiong, a Japanese consortium, and even a minority group of LA Dodgers owners, maybe in the picture. Or somebody else could also be out there with a potential offer.

It makes all the sense for Moreno to sell (if the price is right) to the owners of the Golden State Warriors, the most successful sports franchise in the past 10 years in the NBA and in the Bay Area, bringing the Warriors to an elite level of teams in the NBA with multiple championships and a great fan base.

The Warriors always had a good fan base. I covered them when they first won an NBA Championship in Oakland 1974-75 under coach Al Attles and the ownership of the great Franklin Mieuli. In the 1990s during the Chris Mullin era under owner Jim Fitzgerald, and as their play-by-play (Español) for all their games, I remember all the excitement that they brought to Oakland and Bay Area fans.

Those were very exciting teams, and although they never won an NBA championship, their front office was very much involved with the community, The Oakland Arena was sold out most of the time during those years. David McGahey an innovator in Marketing and Broadcasting in the Bay Area for various media outfits, who passed in 2002, was a great VP of Broadcasting.

At that time the Warriors were one of the first NBA teams to broadcast all their games, home and away on the radio in Spanish language, only the Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, LA Lakers, and Chicago Bulls at the time had Spanish radio.

Arturo Moreno greatly improved his team since he bought them in 2003. One of his first moves was to sign Vladimir Guerrero (now in the Hall of Fame) and later other superstars like Mike Trout and Japanese phenom Shohei Ohtani. Moreno bought the team from Disney one year after they won the World Series against the San Francisco Giants in 2002, but the Angels have not been able to win again.

Lots of frustrations for a team whose lineup seems to be always very formidable but their consistent lack of pitching has been their Achilles heel drowning their hopes for the big trophy in October. In baseball, many things change, like stadiums, salaries, and rules changes, and even Mr. Moreno changed his team’s name from Anaheim to Los Angeles, but there is one thing that has never changed “without pitching, you cannot win”.

It’s too bad Arturo Moreno’s LA Angels could not win a World Series. Now, sooner or rather, the new owner(s) will be taking over the franchise in Orange County. In any sport winning is the key. Like the great NY Yankees owner, the ever-present George Steinbrenner used to say; “Winning is the most important thing in my life, after breathing”.

Stanford Cardinal in huddle during game against the Arizona Wildcats at Maple Pavilion in Palo Alto on Sat Dec 31, 2023. The Cardinal take on the Cal Bears on Sun Jan 8 at UC Berkeley at 4:00pm (photo by the Stanford Cardinal)

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Daniel:

#1 Stanford used a big second quarter surge to pull away from No, 15 Arizona Monday, as the No, 2 Cardinal earned a 73-57 Pac-12 women’s basketball victory at Maples Pavilion last Saturday.

#2  One thing you could say about Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer she gat this team turned up on it’s defense that turned out to be the key in the win over the Wildcats last Monday.

#3 It was the Cardinal’s 10th consecutive win, as they held the high-scoring Wildcats to their lowest offensive output o the season. Arizona (12-2 overall, 2-1 Pac-12) had been averaging 81.2 points per game and had been winning by an average of 22.3 points.

#4 Haley Jones continues to impress with 18 points 16 rebounds the most for Jones this season and five assists, how much does her contributions help in making this team successful on the offensive end as well the reason why their ranked No.2.

#5 The Cardinal host the Cal Bears next on Sun Jan 8th. Cal has won five of their last eight games. Most recently Cal lost a tough game against Arizona in Berkeley in their last game 63-56 on New Years Eve. No doubt the Wildcats are one of the toughest in the Pac 12. How do you see Cal and Stanford tangling this Sunday at Haas Pavilion.

AFC Playoff picture podcast with Tony Renteria: Bills-Bengals players still processing Hamlin and when they’ll resume

The Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals are praying for a recovery of Damar Hamlin. Hamlin still critical is showing signs of improvement with his vitals but doctors still waiting for more improvements going forward. Any make up game between the two teams remains on hold. (AP News file photo)

On the AFC Playoff picture with Tony Renteria:

#1 Tony, the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals will be a game that will never be forgotten with Damar Hamlin hanging on but doctors say he’s improving and vitals are normal.

#2 The Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs have the two best records in the AFC the Chiefs have the edge 13-3 and the Bills are 12-3. The Cincinnati Bengals 11-4 have the third best record question is will the Bill and Bengals be able to make up their game. Right now it appears the Bills are waiting for Hamlin to regain conscientiousness or to get some sort of positive word that he’s going to make it before they move forward.

#3 The Bills before the Monday Night Football game was suspended after Hamlin’s injury have won six straight games and are looking to get a decent seed does the suspended game change that dynamic of winning for the Bills

#4 The Bengals have won seven straight games and same kind of question Tony will their being off this week impact their momentum going into this Sunday’s game.

#5 The Chiefs who are the number one seed so far in the AFC standings play in Las Vegas against the Raiders this Saturday. The Chiefs look to have home field throughout the playoffs in the event the Bills-Bengals game is scrapped and if they beat the Raiders.

Collins and Hunter lead Hawks with 22 pts in 120-117 win over Kings

Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young (11) is fouled by Sacramento Kings guard Kevin Huerte in second half action at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on Wed Jan 4, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Wednesday night. The Kings were on the second night of a back-to-back. On Tuesday, the Kings narrowly defeated the Utah Jazz in Utah. Directly after the game, they returned to Sacramento for the game on Wednesday.

The Kings welcomed the Atlanta Hawks to town on Wednesday at 7 PM PST. Trae Young and former Kings guard Bogdan Bogdanovic. The Kings fell at home to the Hawks 120-117.

The first quarter was an underwhelming performance for the Kings on the offensive end. The Kings defense was playing well and forcing many errors on the Hawks. The Kings and Hawks both scored 30 points in the first quarter. The Kings and the Hawks couldn’t get into any sort of rhythm on the offensive end. Domas and De’Aaron supplied most of the Kings offense, starting with six points each.

The second quarter was more of the same for the Kings. The defense kept up, but the offense needed help finding a rhythm. The Kings shots seemed to be missing at the worst possible times, and were lagging behind Atlanta. The Hawks outscored the Kings in the second quarter 31-28. The Kings would take a 61-58 deficit into halftime. If they wanted to win the game, the offense would need to improve. Domas led the Kings in the first half with 14 points as John Collins did the same for the Hawks with 12 points.

In the third quarter, the Kings hung in the game. They didn’t make up any ground on the Atlanta Hawks but they also didn’t fall any furhter behind. On a night where the kings shooting seemed to be letting them down they hung in.

The Kings scored 30 points in the third quarter as they kept pace with the Hawks who also scored 30. The score going into the final quarter was the Kings down 91-88. Kevin Huerter led the Kings through three quarters with 18 points. De’Andre Hunter and John Collins were leading the Hawks in scoring; both players had 18 points. The Kings would need an offensive explosion on the final quarter to take down the Hawks.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings just couldn’t get it done. They battled but were unable to stop the Hawks offense. That doesn’t tell the whole story. The Kings did come back and take the lead late in the fourth quarter. In fact, they were up four points with just over a minute left. However, sloppy defense and some kissed free throws were the kiss of death for the Kings at they dropped the game.

The Kings and Hawks both scored 29 points in the final quarter. It was a disappointing game for the Kings after taking the lead but that is the way it goes in the NBA. It is a game of runs and clutch shots and the Hawks had one more than the Kings on Wednesday. De’Aaron Fox led the way for the Kings with 25 points. Hunter and Collins led the way for the Hawks in victory both scoring 22 points.

Up Next: The Kings will welcome “The King” Lebron James and the Lakers to the Golden 1 Center Saturday at 7 PM PST.

Barracuda snap losing streak with shootout win over Henderson Silver Knights 4-3

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

SAN JOSE- After going on a eight game losing streak the Barracuda finally snapped it with a victory in a shootout over their rival the Silver Knights by a final of 4-3.

In front of the home crowd the Barracuda got on the board quickly as just 3:43 in Luke Johnson scored his sixth goal of the season to make it 1-0. Ozzy Wiesblatt and Max Veronneau assisted on the goal.

Not too much later in the first period Jeffrey Viel followed that up with a goal his fifth on the year assisted by Brandon Coe and Darren Brady.

That ended up being all the scoring in the period as the shots in period favored San Jose at 10-9.

The second period took a little longer to find any scoring but 9:32 in Gage Quinney scored his 12th goal of the season making the score 2-1. Sheldon Rempal and Byron Froese assisted on the goal.

12:23 into the period Viel took a boarding penalty that would be a major giving Henderson a five minute power play.

A couple minutes into the power play Quinney scored his second of the game to tie the game at two with the goal being assisted by Froese and Jonas Rondbjerg.

With still some time left on the major Henderson scored again this time Ivan Morozov got his third of the season to give the Silver Knights the lead. Both Connor Corcoran and Connor Ford assisted on the goal.

Less than a minute after the power play goal though San Jose answered this time Jasper Weatherby tallied his third goal of the season to tie things right back up. Nick Cicek and Brandon Coe assisted on the goal.

Heading into the third now all tied up the shots now favored Henderson at 21-18.

The third period ended up being a close affair with neither team being able to get the go ahead goal. There were also no penalties called in the period forcing extra hockey.

The shots at the end of the third still favored the Silver Knights at 31-25.

In overtime both starting goalies were not particularly busy as Aaron Dell and Laurent Brossoit only had to turn aside a few shots each.

However with both goalies playing perfect this meant it was time for a shootout.

For Henderson both Quinney and Brendan Brisson had attempts in the shootout and were turned aside by Dell.

San Jose however picked both Danil Gushchin and Luke Johnson to shoot and both of them scored to give the Barracuda the victory.

The shots at the end of the game favored Henderson 35-29.

The three stars of the game were: 1st: Luke Johnson 2nd: Gage Quinney 3rd: Brandon Coe.

The Barracuda will be heading out on the road for their next game on Friday against the Ontario Reign which will be played at 7 p.m.

Warriors Lose to Pistons in Final Second of Game 122-119; Green ejected on second technical

Warriors Lose to Pistons in Final Second of the Game 122-119

By Barbara Mason

Going for their sixth win in a row, the Golden State Warriors (20-19) took on the young upstart Detroit Pistons (11-30) Wednesday night at Chase Center in San Francisco. Andrew Wiggins was still unable to play tonight as was Jonathan Kuminga and James Wiseman. The Warriors had a five game winning streak snapped as the Pistons stayed the course against Golden State coming away with a 122-119 victory.

The Warriors got off to a very disconcerting start. Luckily for Golden State they got on track after the first few minutes of the first quarter. The Pistons were shooting a shocking 67%, crazy for a team that is 28th on offense in the league. After the first twelve minutes of play Detroit led 34-26.

Leading after the first quarter gave the Pistons a lot of confidence that they took into the second quarter. Bojan Bogdanovic was leading the Pistons in points with 17. The Pistons finished the first quarter on an 8-0 run and were looking to put an end to the Warriors win streak at Chase.

The Warriors took a brief one point lead in the second quarter 39-38 at 9:17 but it was short-lived. At the half the Pistons continued to hold the lead 60-56.

Jordan Poole had 13 points in the half but it was the bench that came out hot in this game. They accounted for 30 points in the half between Anthony Lamb, Ty Jerome and Moses Moody. They had kept Golden State in this game. The Warriors continued to struggle with turnovers committing nine and they desperately needed to tighten up they’re defense in the second half.

The rhythm and flow that we are used to seeing from Golden State was absent and one wondered if the double overtime Monday night had taken a toll.

The Warriors took another brief lead in the third quarter but couldn’t get on top of Detroit. The Pistons led after three 91-88.

With 7:33 left in the fourth quarter the Warriors had come from ten down to take the lead 99-98. The Warriors could not sink a three to save their life and were 11 of 33. They were climbing uphill the entire evening. With 5:06 left Klay Thompson hit his first three of the night followed by a second three.

The Warriors had 3:45 to turn this game around. The Pistons had 15 shots from downtown to their credit and with 1:24 left in the game had a 117-112. The hoped for sixth win in a row was on shaky ground. It got even worse when Draymond Green was ejected with his second technical.

With 04.2 left on the clock the Warriors had the ball trailing 119-116. Thompson hit from downtown and we had a tie game at 119 with one second left in regulation. Detroit would end the Warriors perfect home stand with a shot from downtown winning it 122-119.

Thompson had the high with 30 followed by Jordan Poole with 24. The bench had a great game with a combined 48 points.

The Detroit Pistons played a great game, a high caliber game. The high for the Pistons was Bojan Bogdanovic with 29.

Saturday night the Warriors will take on the Magic playing their seventh home game in a row. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30.
