Iran will not participate in the World Cup -Iran’s sad record with Sports

Iran’s national soccer team is not participating in the 2026 World Cup in North America, with the sports minister citing safety concerns amid geopolitical tensions with the U.S. and Israel . Iran was scheduled to play group-stage matches in the United States, including games in Los Angeles.

They didn’t have any games scheduled here in the Bay Area. Meanwhile, the Iranian women’s soccer team left Australia with seven women left behind who were granted asylum after the Iranian government threatened to oust them for not singing the Iranian National Anthem.

This is nothing new; it is not only because of the current war, but for decades. Below are just a handful of Iranian athletes who were killed by their government, one of the most brutal governments in the world since 1979. Navid Afkari, a wrestler, was executed in September 2020.

Feruzan Alodi and Habib Khabiri, both members of the National Volleyball team, and Mohammed Ghremi Far, a soccer player, were shot and killed during an anti-government protest. Ali Mozaffari, a volleyball player, died during a protest. Mojtaba Tarshiz, a soccer player, died in his wife’s arms while trying to shield her from government security forces during a protest.

For the sake of expediency, I did not list all the dates these young athletes lost their lives. Sadly enough, this is the way the Iranian government has ruled the country for the last 47 years, a brutal theocracy. This is not the way it should be:,for the Iranians not to participate in the 2026 World Cup (or any other country), but such is Iran today, and the world we live in today.

I believe it is best for them not to come to the US and participate in this World Cup this summer, as it would be a good thing to potentially prevent more unnecessary violence. That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Ciudad Deportiva in Havana, Cuba one of the First indoor Stadiums

Ciudad Deportiva in Havana, Cuba one of the first indoor stadiums

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

The Ciudad Deportiva in Havana, Cuba, is a major sports complex (built before communism), which was inaugurated in February 1958. The construction of the Ciudad Deportiva, as well as the inauguration, was completed seven years before the Houston Astrodome in Houston, Texas, the first indoor sports stadium in the US, in 1965.

Baseball, the National Sport of Cuba, was played at the Ciudad Deportiva, as were other sports such as volleyball, basketball, fencing, boxing, and weightlifting; it was also used for exhibitions, conventions, and major national events.

The Ciudad Deportiva, translated as “Sports City,” was a marvel of 1950s architecture. As a kid, I remember visiting with my father, and I remember the Cuban people felt very proud of this achievement. In 2026, this dilapidated complex continues to face the same problems affecting the largest island in the Caribbean, including frequent blackouts, food shortages, severe fuel-related economic challenges, inadequate healthcare, and frequent devastating hurricanes.

Sports in Cuba are suffering today more than ever. The Venezuelan situation is harming the island, as the oil-rich country was its principal ally. Cuba and Venezuela had a symbiotic relationship. Venezuela provided Cuba with cheap oil, and Cuba provided Venezuela with arms and military intelligence that they acquired during the years Cuba was a satellite of the Soviet Union(Russia).

However, as of today, Cuba is no longer a powerful military nation; it is weak, and its government’s collapse is predicted to be more likely today after the demise of Venezuela’s dictator Nicolás Maduro. Cuba’s participation in the World Baseball Classic this next March is in doubt, similar issued arose before the 2022 WBC, which was ultimately resolved allowing Cuba to participate, but today it doesn’t look this 2026 situation will be resolved before March.

Sad story for Cuba a country of 11 million people the size of Pennsylvania. Baseball is said to have been introduced in Cuba in 1864 by students returning from the U.S. The first official game on record on the island took place a decade later at Estado Palmar de Junco in Matanzas, considered the oldest active baseball stadium in the world.

Quote: “You don’t walk to get off the island. You hit to get off the island,” -Luis Tiant.

From my Baseball Notebook: Bartolo Colón superstition and retirement at 50

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

The 2025 season is history, and the Dodgers won their second consecutive World Series. If you miss baseball already, I have some good news for you from one of my old baseball notebooks.

Bartolo Colón was one of the most superstitious Latino players that I’ve ever met. For this Dominican, his superstition was to mold the chewing gum into different shapes, sometimes into a small ball, and to insert into his glove before going to the mound.

One per game, before each game.. This became well known among his teammates, but there was no violation of any regulations because he inserted the chewing gum ball inside his glove, not outside. It could not be seen by any camera.

Bartolo pitched for 21 years in the Major Leagues until he was 50 years of age. He pitched for a total of 11 different teams, including the Oakland A’s at 39 years old. When he arrived in 2012. I spoke to this quirky and smart baseball player numerous times, before and after games; he was always cordial, insightful, and at times very funny.

In his first season with the A’s, during Spring Training in Arizona, he was in the dugout next to Cuban rookie Yoenis Céspedes; he helped Yoenis communicate because Yoenis spoke very little English. But he was always playing pranks and cranking jokes, sometimes Yoenis would put his hands up in the air and say “Oye chico tú eres comendiante ó pitcher” trans- “Hey man, are you a comedian or a pitcher?”

Bartolo once told me, “Pienso retirarme a los 60 años”. trans- “I am thinking of retiring at 60. He was 10 years short on his prediction, and he said Adiós to the game at 50! He always said he lasted this long because he enjoyed the game very much, loved working hard on his craft, and valued his friendships with other players. With the A’s, he especially enjoyed tutoring the younger pitchers.

At the beginning of his career, Bartolo regularly hit 95+ mph on his fastball. Toward the end of his career, control was his trademark, yet he remained a very efficient pitcher.

He was colorful and had a good reputation, and he won 247 games during his excellent career. In 2005, when he was a pitcher with the Cleveland Indians, he won the Cy Young Award as the American League’s best pitcher. In 2016, as a testament to his character, Bartolo won the “Joe DiMaggio Toast of the Town” Award given by the New York Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Hitting: Bartolo Colón hit his one career home run at Petco Park in San Diego on May 7, 2016, as a pitcher for the New York Mets. He hit it off pitcher James Shields, a two-run shot in the top of the second inning, and at 42 years and 349 days old, he became the oldest player to hit his first major league home run.

Career accomplishment. The Latino pitcher with the most wins in Major League Baseball is Bartolo Colón, who retired with 247 wins. The Dominican-born pitcher played for 21 seasons across 11 different teams before retiring at the end of the 2018 season. His 247 wins are two more than Dennis Martímnez (245) and four more than Hall of Famer Juan Marichal (243)

An FBI probe into mafia-linked gambling and sports rigging schemes led to the arrests of Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, as well as former NBA player Damon Jones.

According to the NBA, the current players have been placed on leave. An arrest and investigation like this takes months to put together; stuff like this doesn’t happen and come out in a few days.

It would be interesting to see what further revelations from all parties, including players, attorneys, and NBA representatives, emerge in the near future.

Among the many sources reporting early on this story, originally reported by the FBI, which is conducting the investigation, is NBC Sports, which reported that the betting scandal could involve NBA megastar LeBron James. The FBI secured more than 30 indictments tied to alleged illegal gambling scandals, including three former and current prominent NBA figures.

This is not good for the NBA, which just began its 2025-26 season on October 21, as NBC and Peacock televised a doubleheader broadcast featuring the Houston Rockets and the Oklahoma Thunder, followed by the Golden State Warriors at the Los Angeles Lakers.

More news on this should be coming soon.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Oakland an expansion city?

Nine possible expansion cities MLB is considering to expand to (image by Fox Sports)

Oakland an expansion city?

–That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Major League Baseball plans to expand to 32 teams after the Oakland Athletics move to Las Vegas and the Tampa Bay Rays secure a new ballpark. So that is not happening tomorrow; it will be a few more years. But could Oakland, California, be one of these expansion teams?

I am not as surprised as others when one of the nine (9) cities named as a candidate for an expansion franchise was Oakland. Oakland is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the top ten media markets in the US.

With Silicon Valley in the South Bay (San José) we are also considered one of the affluent markets in the United States. The primary reason the Oakland A’s left Oakland is the lack of a new stadium and the owner’s desire for a more profitable market.

Owner John Fisher chose Las Vegas, Nevada, the #40 media market in the United States, over the Bay Area, one of the top markets in the country. In other words, Mr. Fisher left a Filet Mignon on the table for a Hamburger.

However, let’s be clear, the Oakland A’s are not returning to Oakland. But, there is a possibility that Oakland could have a new team, an expansion team in the Major Leagues. A brand-new-shinning Oakland logo back in the East Bay.

Stranger things have happened. Although the commissioner has stated that there are no predetermined locations, these nine seem to be the most popular. Charlotte, Mexico City, Montreal, Nashville, San Antonio, Salt Lake City, Portland, Sacramento, and Oakland.

In the case of Sacramento (which is currently the temporary home of the A’s, onto Las Vegas in a few years), Sacramento would have to build a brand-new park to meet major league specifications. The key figure in professional sports in California’s capital city is Vivek Ranadivé, and his ownership group, which owns both the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and the Sacramento River Cats, the Triple-A Affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.

Ranadivé extended a hand to John Fisher to bring his A’s to Sacramento temporarily; he could be interested in a major league franchise in his town, an expansion team. Keep in mind, we are talking years in the future.

Joe Lacob and Peter Gruber are the owners of the NBA Golden State Warriors and the WNBA Golden State Valkyries. Could it be that these same owners, who a couple of years ago had an offer to buy the Oakland A’s from John Fisher, would be interested in a new expansion team across the bay?

Makes sense, since they are already invested and very influential in the Bay Area Professional sports scene. México City, México, makes a lot of sense. Major League Baseball’s influence in Latin America continues to grow, with over 30% of Hispanic players born South of the Border among the biggest stars in the world.

Montréal, Canada (which had the Expos for 36 seasons), is also an interesting choice. If they do get an expansion team, it would be the second team in all of Canada, alongside the Toronto Blue Jays, like it used to be.

Let’s face it, Canada, eh… is a nice country, they deserve more than hockey. If the Commissioner wants to make baseball more international, we should expand further north to Canada and south to México. I am only using common sense, but beware; ‘common sense is not very common in 2025’

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: The passing of Al Attles 87; Basketball in his Veins-As I remember

Former Golden State Warriors head coach Al Attles from 1970-1983 passed away Wed Aug 20, 2024 at age 87 (USA Today photo)

Al Attles -Basketball in his Veins -As I Remember

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

I had the privilege of knowing Al Attles during the Golden State Warriors years when he was a team advisor-executive and would travel most of the time with the W’s during the 1990s. Then, I was employed by the team as their Spanish play-by-play announcer.

For the record, the “only one they ever had in their history” to date. At their time, only four or five teams were broadcasting NBA in Spanish; I believe the Warriors were after the Spurs, Rockets, and Lakers, maybe we were the fourth in the country to do Spanish on KIQI 1010AM San Francisco.

But first, here is a little history about a great man and a great gentleman, Al Attles, who left us today after 87 years on this earth. He was born in Newark, New Jersey; the “Jersey Jet” was a player for the Philadelphia Warriors from 1960-1962 and then with the San Francisco Warriors until 1971.

The first professional sporting event I ever covered in the Bay Area was a Warriors game in the 1970s. The Warriors played temporarily at the Cow Palace, Daly City, while the Oakland Arena was under construction. I remember Mr. Hal Childs, the first Media Relations person I had to deal with for my credentials; he was then with the Warriors.

Al Attles played on that historic day when Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points. Attles was humble and would not tell you that his 17 points during that same game resulted from making every throw he made: eight field goals and one free throw. He made them all but was always humble as a player or coach.

I once joked with him that when Wilt Chamberlain scored the record 100 points in that game, he must have had a bunch of assists. He joked about how he passed to Chamberlain, but in the end, he admitted he had six assists. By the way, in that game, the Warriors won 169-134 over the Knicks. It was on March 2, 1962.

Al would usually be first on the team bus after every game when traveling with the Warriors on the road. I would be a few minutes later since my post-game show, as I did a solo broadcast on all games home and road, would be handled in 5 minutes, and then I would send it back to our main studios in San Francisco. I would ‘pick his head’ after a game, specially if we lost that game, during those years the W’s had good teams but no titles.

One day, I remember the team losing by a large margin and blowing out 20 points. As I walked onto the bus, he said, “Did you put this team together?” On other occasions, he would tell me, “Can you push the ball?” And it continued, but I always listened to his wisdom and learned a lot from this humble and generous man.

After playing, Attles’s career was dedicated to coaching. He always liked to talk and teach basketball and coached the San Francisco Warriors and then the Golden State Warriors from 1968 to 1975. He won the NBA title in that great 1974-75 season as a coach.

Although I cannot remember the exact date, I did cover the Victory Rally at San Francisco Union Square after they beat the Washington team in the 1974-75 season NBA finals. I had my SONY small recorder in hand.

I remember as I walked to the Warriors celebratory rally, running into the “one and only Bill King” (best basketball play-by-play announcer I ever heard), who was sporting Jesus sandals and purple socks. He was there to speak at the rally, Al Attles, and then owner Franklin Meuli, wearing his inseparable Sherlock Holmes hat, also talked to a friendly crowd celebrating the moment.

The whole Bay Area is mourning today.

Rest in Peace Al Attles, I will forever remember you your wisdom and your profound voice.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: No Major League team for Oakland on the horizon

The city of Oakland and the Oakland Coliseum will not be seeing MLB baseball expansion anytime soon (NBC Bay Area photo)

No Major League team for Oakland on the horizon

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Below are considered the cities vying for an expansion team in Major League Baseball—Total city and area population.

Montreal: 4.38 million. Charlotte: 2.76 million. San Antonio: 2.66 million. Portland: 2.51 million. Sacramento: 2.42 million (A’s are expected to play from 2025 to 2027-maybe 2028) Nashville: 2.05 million. Salt Lake City: 1.27 million Conspicuously, and for obvious reasons, Oakland is not on this list, and it might not be for many years to come.

A case can be made that another Bay Area city (the one with the largest population), San José, could even have a better shot than Oakland for an expansion, with the most significant obstacle being the San Francisco Giants, who own the San José territory which ironically was given to the Giants for free by A’s owner Walter Haas in 1990, as a way to keep the Giants in the Bay Area and not relocate to Florida.

The Media Markets for these cities are below. None come close to Oakland, which is designated as the number six market area in the United States and, according to Nielsen, as of 2004, is part of the Bay Area together with San Francisco and San Jose; at the time, Santa Clara County (including San José) was considered neutral territory by the two teams.

Today, San José has the largest population in the Bay Area, with over 1 million, including the world-famous Silicon Valley, where the average salary of a worker is $190,000 annually.

Nielsen Media Rankings (2024) Sacramento (20th in U.S.) Charlotte (21st in U.S.) Portland (23rd in U.S.) Nashville (26th in U.S.) Salt Lake City (27th in U.S.) San Antonio (31st in U.S.) Las Vegas (40th in U.S.) —

This is where the A’s have decided as their final destination. Major League Baseball expansion is coming—it’s just a matter of when and where. While the timeline for MLB’s expansion to 32 teams remains. Commissioner Rob Manfred said he hopes to have a process “in place” before he retires in 2029.
