Brian Sabean, Giants Architect of 3 World Series Titles, with the Yankees

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

SAN FRANCISCO–The main brain trust that brought the first World Series title to the Giants, and a total of three World Series in 2010, 2012 and 2014, has rejoined his original team, the New York Yankees. Sabean is now an executive advisor to senior vice president to the general manager of the Yankees  Brian Cashman.

Sabean is the man that was credited with shaping the New York Yankees during their dynasty of the late 1990s. “Saves” (one of his nicknames) for the past 30 years with the Giants, including as senior vice president and general manager from 1996 until 2015, He scouted well in New York and also in San Francisco. Brian Sabean is one of the most accomplished baseball executives in recent history.

Giants fans might remember some of  these names, who came to San Francisco under Brian Sabean reign, many via trades; J.T. Snow, Jeff Kent, Benito Santiago, Juan Uribe, Edgar Rentería, Ellis Burks, Pat Burell, Kenny Lofton, Robb Nen and others. About returning to work for the Yankees he said:  “It’s humbling. At my age, I really appreciate being wanted and needed,” Sabean said. “As I talked to Cash, I think it became organic as to how I could help the organization. I’m all in. I’ll do anything to help the Yankees win another World Series. Our family is thrilled, and we’re totally invested.”

At 66 years of age Sabean looks to another chapter of his life. Prior to ascending to General Manager of the SF Giants he was head of their baseball division from 1977 to 2018, he brought to the Giants all the success they never had (as far as winning) since the team moved to San Francisco in 1958.

Although he will never have a statue at Oracle Park, Brian Sabean is the only General Manager in San Francisco Giants history with three World Series rings.

Fox & Company Win Thriller Over Utah 117-115

By Barbara Mason

After losing to the Grizzlies in Memphis Sunday, the Sacramento Kings (20-16) traveled to Utah to take on the Jazz (19-21) at Vivint Arena and just got by with a 117-115 win in Salt Lake City. The Jazz have now lost five games in a row and were looking to get back on track at home. They were aiming to level the score after losing to the Kings in late December by a single point 126-125.

Game recap: Sacramento got off to a solid start winning the first quarter 35-23. The Jazz started to heat up in the second, winning it 28-25 but still trailing at the half 60-51. The Kings finished the first half shooting at 50% while the Jazz were close to 41%. Sacramento had seven turnovers. The King’s Kevin Huerter had the high score in the first two quarters with 14 points and Domantas Sabonis, Harrison Barnes and De’Aaron Fox all had double digits in the first half.

The Jazz only had two starters in double digits at the half. Jarred Vanderbilt had the high with 12 points and Lauri Markkanen had ten for Utah.

After leading by 12 points in the third quarter the Kings let the Jazz back into the game. Utah got to within two points 73-71 with 5:47 left in the third. The Jazz had challenged the Kings a number of times throughout the game but Sacramento roared back every time. Mounting turnovers and fouls started to hurt the Kings and gave Utah a real edge. With 35 seconds left on the clock the Jazz had tied up this game at 86. After three quarters, the Jazz had taken the lead 89-88.

This game would go to the team that was able to finish; it would go down to the wire. With 41.3 left in the game the Kings called a timeout. The score was 113-112 in favor of Sacramento. With 0.4 left in the game Fox made a driving layup giving the Kings the lead 117-115 which was the final.

Fox had a monster night with 37 points. Every starter on the roster had double digits in this collaborative effort. They were challenged over and over by the Jazz and fought to the very end of this intense game.

The Jazz’s high score was Lauri Markkanen with 28 points.

Wednesday night the Kings will take on the Atlanta Hawks back home at Golden One in downtown Sacramento. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: NFL exec says Carr’s removal was “classless” and “trash”

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr throws one of his last passes for the Raiders in his last game with the team on Sat Dec 24, 2022 in Pittsburgh (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 Rich an unnamed NFL executive said that the Las Vegas Raiders way of cutting Derek Carr was “classless” and that the organization treated him like “trash” after letting him go after the Raiders loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec 24th.

#2 The Raiders in releasing Carr incur $5.25 million of dead cap room and in all intensive purposes from all appearances the Raiders are set to release or trade Carr. Carr reportedly has blocked the Raiders on his social media accounts.

#3 Football is a business but benching Carr after being the starting quarterback for nine years and not letting him suit up and be with the team after some of the close games the Raiders had been in just didn’t make sense.

#4 Jarrett Stidham the new starting quarterback for the Raiders had a incredible first game against the San Francisco 49ers including a 60 yard touchdown pass that put the Raiders up by ten. The Raiders however couldn’t hold onto the lead and lost it by a field goal in overtime.

#5 The Raiders host the Kansas City Chiefs this Saturday at Allegiant Stadium to close out their regular season. The Chiefs are coming in hot they’ve won four straight games and are 13-3 Rich what is your prediction for this match up on Saturday?

On That’s Amaury podcast:

#1 Amaury, We’ll start the podcast with the tragic Monday Night Football story as last night the Buffalo Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin took a hit that appeared to be in head and upper body area from Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins who was charging full speed on a carry. Hamlin got up after the hit and then collapsed, medics applied CPR and he was taken immediately to a local Cincinnati hospital where it was learned that Hamlin listed in critical condition and was out to sleep to have a breathing tube down his throat according to his marketing agent Jordan Rooney.

#2 Staying with football Amaury, this a rough and tumble game if you stand on the sidelines no matter what league it is the CFL, Arena football, high school, college, or the NFL it’s a collision sport and guys know a serious injury can result and medics have to make quick decisions how to treat a player such as the case in Damar Hamlin last night.

#3 We switch to MLB, the Detroit Tigers have acquired infielder Tyler Nevin from the Baltimore Orioles for cash last Saturday. Nevin hit .197 in 58 games for the Orioles hit two home runs and 16 RBIs. Nevin is the son of Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin.

#4 San Francisco Giants team president Farhan Zaidi said that the move to end their agreement with the Carlos Correa was not an 11th hour decision and that the Zaidi said the Giants that as soon as the Giants had the information regarding Correa not passing the physical he shared it with the media.

#6 New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge named as the 16th captain in Yankees history has been voted the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for 2022. Hannah Jump (33) gets to jump for joy as the Stanford Cardinal defeat the Arizona Wildcats at Maples Pavilion on Mon Jan 2, 2023 (Bay Area News Group photo)

By Daniel Dullum
Monday, January 2, 2023

Stanford used a big second quarter surge to pull away from No, 15 Arizona Monday, as the No, 2 Cardinal earned a 73-57 Pac-12 women’s basketball victory at Maples Pavilion.

It was the Cardinal’s 10th consecutive win, as they held the high-scoring Wildcats to their lowest offensive output o the season. Arizona (12-2 overall, 2-1 Pac-12) had been averaging 81.2 points per game and had been winning by an average of 22.3 points.

Haley Jones led the Cardinal (15-1 overall, 3-0 Pac-12) with 18 points, a season-high 16 rebounds and five assists. Francesca Belibi had 14 points and 10 rebounds off the Stanford bench – both season highs, Hannah Jump bagged four 3-pointers on her way to finishing with 13 points.

Cameron Brink finished with 12 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots despite a cold shooting day. Brink was 3-for-15 from the field and missed all of her 3-point attempts.

The Cardinal were 20-for-34 at the free throw line, but had a 53-35 rebounding edge.

Jade Loville led U of A with 12 points. Helena Pueyo and Madison Connor each added 10 polints for the Wildcats, Pueyo also had seven rebounds,

Stanford used a 7-0 run to take a 17-11 lead in the first quarter, then outscored the Wildcats 17-7 in the second quarter to take a 36-22 halftime lead.

The Cardinal visit California this Sunday in Berkeley in their second matchup of the season. Stanford won the first game 90-69 at Maples Pavilion on Dec. 23 in the Pac-12 opener.

Golden State Warriors game wrap: Warriors Win Crazy Double Overtime vs Hawks 143-141; Fifth Straight win for Golden State

“Peek a Boo I see 54 points” as the Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson (11) finished on top of the leaderboard against the visiting Atlanta Hawks at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Mon Jan 2, 2023 (AP News photo)

Warriors Win Crazy Double Overtime vs Hawks 143-141

By Barbara Mason

Monday night the Golden State Warriors (20-18) took on the Atlanta Hawks (17-20) to pick up their fifth straight win 143-141 as they continued their home-stand. The Warriors were missing Andrew Wiggins due to illness and James Wiseman (left ankle sprain) and Jonathan Kuminga (right foot sprain) also were out for the game. The Hawks in this game dropped their fourth straight game to hand the Warriors a double overtime victory.

Game recap: The Warriors got another great start in this game. Klay Thompson was still shooting lights out finishing the first quarter with 17 points. Golden State led after the first 12 minutes 38-26.

The Warriors took that energy into the second quarter and continued to extend their lead. The Hawks struggled on defense and Golden State took full advantage. The Warriors were shooting close to 54% and had extended their lead at the half to 70-53. The second quarter went to the Warriors 32-27.

Thompson had 22 points in the first half of play. Jordan Poole had 12 and off the bench Anthony Lamb had 13 points.

Last Friday the Hawks got a nightmare second quarter from the Warriors. Tonight it was a horrific third quarter for Golden State. They let a 21 point lead vanish and found themselves tied at 95 as the third quarter wrapped up. The Hawks won the third quarter in convincing style 42-25 in a dramatic turnaround.

Atlanta took a significant lead in the fourth quarter and it looked for a time like the winning streak would come to an end. Donte Divincenzo had yet another desperately needed three tied that up this game with six seconds left on the clock. It was on to overtime.

As overtime got underway it became painfully apparent that the Warriors offensive flow had left the building. The Hawks got off to a five point advantage but Golden State fought back and tied this game at 132 with 13.7 left on the clock. The Warriors were unable to take a shot in the final seconds and so it was on to double overtime.

It seems as if the Warriors have a different hero every time. Tied at 141 with 7.6 left on the clock it was Kevon Looney with a tip-in for the improbable win 143-141.

There were so many heroes in this game tonight. Thompson finished this game with an unbelievable 54 points. Divincenzo got the Warriors into the overtime scenario with a shot from downtown with six seconds left in the game. Draymond Green got the Warriors into the second overtime with a clutch three and Kevon Looney sealed the deal with the tip-in as the clock expired.

The Hawks caught fire in the second half. Trae Young finished with 30 pts. Collins and Murray had 25 points apiece. Off the bench Bogdanovic had a great game with 21 points.

The Warriors got their offense going in the closing minutes of each of the overtimes. This game could not have been closer but Golden State wanted this win and fought tooth and nail to extend their winning streak to five.

The Warriors will take on the Pistons Wednesday night. They will regroup and get a bit of a breather tomorrow. This was a physically draining game for both teams and Golden State will really need tomorrow off. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 at Chase Center on Wednesday.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: MLB Big Winter Free Agents Signings

MLB: Big Winter Free Agents Signings

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

The $500 Million man?

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

Nobody so far has signed a $500 million contract in Major League Baseball, yet, but hold under your hat, because LA Angels Japanese mega-star Shohei Ohtani will be a Free Agent after the 2023 season and he might be the first ever to sign such a contract,

However, Othani’s teammate and good friend in Anaheim Mike Trout did sign a $400 million deal a few years ago (below). Ohtani, a superstar pitcher, and hitter is going to get an out-of-this-world offer. Rumors have been circulating that Steve Cohen, owner of the NY Mets wants Othani to be wearing a Mets uniform in 2024 for at least a decade. The Mets will pay a luxury tax larger than the actual total payrolls of team like the A’S and Pirates.

The Past: The $400 million man:

During Spring Training in March of 2019,m Mike Trout signed a 12-year, $426,500.000 contract with the LA Angels including a $20 million signing bonus. $426,500,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $35,541,667. In 2023, Trout will earn a base salary of $35,450,000, while carrying a total salary of $37,116,666. The LA Angels are currently for sale.

Big Winter Free Agent Signings after 2022.

Right after the Baseball Winter Meetings in San Diego in December. The biggest signings were made by teams in the east; Yankees, Mets and Phillies, followed by some other teams closing their deals.

1-The biggest signing was by the New York Yankees as they kept slugger Aaron Judge the 2022 AL MVP in the American League and AP Male Athlete of the Year. and new home run champion with 62. Hal Steinbrenner owner of the Yankees gave Aaron Judge a 9-year $360 million contract and also make him the 16th Captain team’s history.

He will spend the rest of his baseball career with the Bronx Bombers. The Yankee deal was challenged by the San Francisco Giants, who went hard after the man born in Northern California and offered the 6’7″ outfielder also $360 million.

However, it was learned later the San Diego Padres offered Judge $400 million, but at the end he chose to stay with the Yankees. Ex-Giants lefty Carlos Rodón also signed with the Yankees for 6-years and $162 million, Rodón struck out 237 batters, third best in all of baseball.

2-The New York Mets Owner Steve Cohen dealing with Carlos Correa’s super agent Scott Boras offered Correa a 12 year deal with the Mets estimated to be $315 million, but that deal (at the time of this article) is on hold for medical reason. Days before, the Giants were just a couple of hours away from announcing Correa’s signing in a Press Conference at Oracle Park, which never took place because a physical examination of Correa showed a “medical situation”.

There was a disagreement between Correa and the Giants, who then withdrew the offer. The Giants who were looking for a superstar to please their fans struck out twice, with Judge and Correa. Not what the Giants had in mind this off-season. More on the Giants below.

The NY also Mets signed to an 8-year extension outfielder Brandon Nimmo of $162 million, and extended their closer Edwin Díaz to 5-years for $102 million, the largest contract extension for a relief pitcher in history. Mets signed Japanese import rookie right handed pitcher Kodai Senga for 5-years and $75 million.

3-Philadelphia Phillies signed free agent shortstop Trea Turner, who was a Free Agent after playing the last two seasons in LA for the Dodgers. The National League Champions Phillies gave Turner 11 years and $300 million.

4-San Diego Padres signed free agent shortstop Xander Boagerts for 11-years and $280 million.

5-Texas Rangers. Signed free agent pitcher Jacob d’Grom to a 5-year $185 million and also starter Nathan Eovaldi for 2-years and $34 million

6-Chicago Cubs signed free agent shortstop Dansby Swanson for 7-years and $177 million.

7Boston Red Sox signed outfielder Masataka Yoshida for 5-years and $90 million.

8-Atlanta Braves, two weeks after trading for A’s regular catcher Sean Murphy extended his contract for 6 years and $73 million

9-World Champion Houston Astros signed José Abreu ex-first baseman of the Chicago White Sox for 3-years and $58.5 million.

By the Bay:

San Francisco Giants looking to improve their defense (overall Giants were 23rd among all 30 teams) signed ex-Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger for 2 years and $43.5 million. He has been often injured, with his best season of his previous six years in Seattle in 2021 when he hit .253 with 39 home runs and 100 runs batted in.

The Giants also signed ex-Mets Michael Conforto on a 2-year deal worth $36 million (with an opt-out option after 2023) why the opt-out option? Conforto did not play last season and in April underwent right shoulder surgery. Giants also signed ex A’s and Padres left-handed starter Sean Manaea as well as Ross Strippling a right-handed pitcher for two years with Toronto, giving the Giants more depth on their starting rotation since they lost lefty Carlos Rodón to the Yankees during December. Giants also acquired reliever Taylor Rodgers to a 3-year $33 million contract who now joins his twin-brother Tyler in San Francisco’s bullpen.

Oakland A’s signed Jace Peterson, a veteran who played for nine years with teams in both leagues to a 2-year contract for $9,5 million, he can play infield and outfield. Free Agent Aledmys Díaz, previous with Houston signed a two year $14.5 million; just like Peterson he is a utility player.

Traded catcher Sean Murphy to Atlanta in a three-team swap in which they acquired catcher Manny Piña and pitching prospects Kyle Muller, Freddy Tanok and Royber Salinas from Atlanta and outfield prospect Esteury Ruíz from Milwaukee. As of this article, the versatile Chad Pinder still a free agent.

The Crums left: The LA Dodgers signed veteran DH JD.Martínez to a 1-year $10 million contract…Corey Kluber, who won two Cy Young Awards for Cleveland signed a 1-year $10 million with the Boston Red Sox…After playing five years with the Giants, the team opted out to pay him the $5 million buyout, instead of picking up his $13 million club option, Longoria signed a 1-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks for $4 million. Yankee utility player Marwin González signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal to play in Japan with the Orix Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball.

As we begin the New Year there are still players available, not the super star kind of players but some good players with experience like Giants first baseman Brandon Belt who still a Free Agent; however Belt who has been with the Giants for the past 12 years is in a difficult situation after he underwent another right knee surgery (number three for him) in early September which ended his season.

Happy New Year!
