Commissioner’s Proposal The 154-game schedule allows for a standard weekly off-day (primarily Mondays) to benefit player health. Starting in the 2029 season. It creates a new national broadcast window to showcase top teams and players.

A shorter regular season improves October baseball with fewer weekday afternoon games, a longer best-of-seven Division Series (expanded from best-of-five), and more prime-time viewing. Allowing top seeds to pick their opponents in the first two rounds creates compelling storylines and intensifies rivalries.

Players Union Statement Players stated they are reviewing the scheduling and playoff format proposals and will respond at the bargaining table. The union criticized the league for making all its proposals contingent on a salary cap, which it views as a system that “guts player rights and compensation,” along with other anti-player measures.

An owners lockout looms, but at least the Commissioner made a proposal, which gives fans some hope. How much? We will soon find out.

NOTE: The longest work stoppage in Major League Baseball (MLB) history was the 1994–1995 MLB strike, which lasted 232 days (from August 12, 1994, to April 2, 1995)
