Silver Knights take down Barracuda 5-1, sweep series

The Henderson Silver Knights bounced the San Jose Barracuda out of the playoffs with a 5-1 victory in Game 2 of the best of three Pacific Division playoff series on Friday evening at Lee’s Family Forum.

San Jose’s season ends down in the desert with the sweep by Henderson. The Silver Knights advanced to the Pacific Division Semifinals. Their opponent is still to be determined.

Henderson (2-0) drew first blood early in the first period with an even strength goal. Matyas Sapovaliv’s wraparound attempt was saved by Cuda goalie Laurent Brossoit, but Braeden Bowman cleaned up the rebound for his first goal of the series at the 7:56 mark.

The Silver Knights doubled its lead with a 5-on-3 goal late in the opening frame. Tanner Laczynski made a fancy backhand pass down to Raphael Lavoie to the left side of the net. Lavoie tapped home the puck into an open net for his third goal of the series at the 17:40 mark. Lavoie scored two goals against San Jose in Game 1 of the series.

Alexander Holtz scored Henderson’s third unanswered goal two minutes into the second period. Kai Uchacz’s shot was kicked out by Brossoit, but Holtz buried home the rebound at the 2:07 mark. Trevor Connelly picked up the secondary assist.

San Jose (0-2) finally figured out Silver Knights goalie Carl Lindblom late in the middle frame. San Jose Sharks 2023 fifth round draft pick Eric Pohlkamp, who made his professional debut for the Cuda after winning a collegiate national championship with the University of Denver, shot the puck from the left wing and it trickled out in front of the crease before Egor Afanasyev put home the rebound for his first goal of the series at the 18:55 mark.

Jeremy Davies iced the game for Henderson with an empty net goal with 2:58 remaining in the game when San Jose pulled Brossoit for an extra attacker. It was Davies second goal of the series.

Lucas Johansen concluded the scoring with an empty net goal, his first of the series, with 51 seconds left.

Lindblom finished the night stopping 26 of the 27 shots to end the series for San Jose. Brossoit made 26 saves on 29 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 0-for-3 on the power play. Henderson went 1-for-4.

Barracuda fall to Silver Knights 5-4 in OT, down 1-0 in series

San Jose Barracuda who are playing all three playoff games on the road in Henderson dropped the first game against the Henderson Silver Knights 5-4 in overtime.

San Jose opened up the playoff scoring, Kasper Halttunen scoring his first in the Calder Cup. Jett Woo registering the lone assist. Henderson tied the game at 1-1 on the powerplay when Lukas Cormier scored his first of the playoffs, Trevor Connelly and Tanner Laczynski with the assists.

Regaining their lead, 2-1, Jimmy Huntington scored his twelfth career playoff goal. Oliver Wahlstrom and Braden Hache with the assists. Three minutes later, San Jose scored their first powerplay goal to make it 3-1 Barracuda. Colin White with the goal, Luca Cagnoni and Oliver Wahlstrom with the assists. To get back within 1, Raphael Lavoie scored his first of the playoffs to make it a 3-2 game. Ben Hemmerling and Lukas Cormier with the assists.

Henderson tied the game at 3-3 when Jeremy Davies scored his first of the playoffs. Trevor Connelly with his second assist and Dylan Coghlan with his first assist of the playoffs. 1 minute later, Raphael Lavoie scored his second of the game to give them their first lead of the game, 4-3. Tying the game at 4-4, scoring their second powerlay of the night, Igor Chernysov scored his first playoff goal. Oliver Wahlstrom and Filip Bystedt with the assists.

Regulation wasn’t enough as the game went into overtime. 38 seconds into overtime, Henderson scored and are now up 1-0 in the best of 3 series.

After the first period, Henderson outshot San Jose, fifteen to six. After the second period, Henderson outshot San Jose fourteen to six. After the third period, San Jose outshot Henderson ten to eight.

Special Teams was a factor in Wednesday night’s game. San Jose went 2/5 on the powerplay while Henderson went 1/4 on the powerplay.

Laurent Brossoit got the start for San Jose. Making 34 saves on 39 shots, Brossoit recorded tonight’s loss. Carl Lindbom got the start for Henderson. Making 18 saves on 22 shots, Lindbom recorded tonight’s win.

Crespo’s OT heroics help Barracuda snap losing streak in 4-3 win over Condors in season finale

SAN JOSE — Jarod Crespo picked a great time to score his first career AHL goal.

Crespo scored the game winning goal on the rebound with a backhand shot with 35.3 left in the overtime session as the San Jose Barracuda defeated the Bakersfield Condors 4-3 in the season finale on Saturday evening at Tech CU Arena.

San Jose finished the season snapping its six-game losing streak as the number sixth seed in the Pacific Division. The Barracuda will face the Henderson Silver Knights in the first round of the playoffs in a best of three series out in Sin City. Bakersfield finished as the fifth seed and will face off against the Coachella Valley Firebirds down in the desert in their first-round matchup.

San Jose (40-22-2-2-84 points) drew first blood just past the halfway point of the first period with a power play goal. Brendan Hoffman sent a pass back to Filip Bystedt from behind the net. Bystedt fed Kasper Halttunen in the slot and Finnish forward buried a one-timer past Condor’s goalie Connor Ungar for his 16th goal of the season at the 11:20 mark.

Bakersfield (37-23-11-1-86 points) kept things chippy as a carryover from last night’s game down in Bakersfield. They were outshot 17-8 in the opening 20 minutes as Cuda goalie Gabriel Carrier was perfect.

The Condors evened the score just before the halfway mark of the second period. Arto Leppanen floated a puck toward the net that was redirected by Isaac Howard for his 24th goal of the season at the 8:48 mark. Howard has scored in back-to-back games against San Jose.

The Cuda regained the lead late in the middle frame with an even strength goal. Bystedt began a counterattack from behind his own goal line. Bystedt ran a bit of interference inside the Condors zone to open a lane for Quentin Musty whose shot went off the shoulder of Ungar and floated into the back of the net for his 21st goal of the season at the 14:51 mark.

Bakersfield answered back late in the period. Viljami Marjala finished off a give and go with Howard as he tipped in Howard’s shot past Carrier for his 17th goal of the season at the 18:00 mark.

San Jose responded on the net shift. Jimmy Huntington won a battle in the neutral zone and was able to get the puck over to Kyle Crnkovic at the blueline. Crnkovic skated into the middle before ripping a wrist shot past Ungar for the Cuda’s third lead of the game and his first career AHL goal 30 seconds later.

Bakersfield made Patrick Giles pay for an undisciplined slashing penalty late in the third period. Leppanen scored his 11th goal of the season on the power play at the 17:30 mark to even the game at 3-3.

Carrier (15-12-3-1) finished the evening stopping 32 of the 35 shots he faces to earn his 15th win of the season. Ungar (9-2-2-1) made 31 saves on 35 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-4 on the power play. Bakersfield was also 1-for-4.

San Jose won all four games at home against Bakersfield this season.

Barracuda fall 5-2 to Condors, extend losing streak to 6

The San Jose Barracuda dropped their sixth straight game as the slump continues losing to the Bakersfield Condors 5-2 at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield on Friday night.

Bakersfield opened up the scoring, 1:46 into the first period, Sam Poulin scoring his 20th goal of the season. They extended that lead when Isaac Howard scored his seventh goal of the season.

Sam Poulin extended Bakersfield’s lead to 3-0 scoring his second of the game, and 21st goal of the season. San Jose avoided the shutout when Brendan Hoffman scored his fifth goal of the season. Patrick Giles recorded the primary assist while Jarod Crespo recorded the secondary assist.

Cutting the lead to one, and making it 3-2, Filip Bystedt scored his 22 goal of the season. Jake Boltmann recording the primary assist and Quentin Musty recording the secondary assist. Scoring their second powerplay goal of the night, Bakersfield made it 4-2 when Roby Järventie scored his 22 of the night. To secure the win, Roby Järventie scored an empty netter to make it 5-2.

After the first period, Bakersfield outshot San Jose nine to eight. After the second period, San Jose outshot Bakersfield 12-11. Lastly, after the third period, Bakersfield outshot San Jose 11-10.

Special teams played an early role in Friday night’s game. San Jose went 0/5 on the powerplay. Bakersfield went 2/4 on the powerplay.

Friday night, Laurent Brossoit got the start for San Jose. Making 17 saves on 20 shots, Brossoit recorded Friday night’s loss. For Bakersfield, Matt Tomkins made 28 saves on 30 shots, and recorded Friday night’s win.

Firebirds bury Barracuda in 4-1 victory

SAN JOSE — The Coachella Valley Firebirds scored two goals in the third period to turn a close game into a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Barracuda on Tuesday evening at Tech CU Arena.

San Jose has lost five games in a row and nine out of its last 10. Coachella Valley snapped its three-game losing streak. The Barracuda can finish no higher than the fourth seed in the Pacific Division.

Coachella Valley (40-24-6-0-86 points) drew first blood early in the first period. Jacob Melanson centered the puck to the middle of the crease from behind the goal line. Logan Morrison tapped home the puck into the back of the net for his team-leading 28th goal of the season at the 5:21 mark. Morrison has scored four goals in seven games against San Jose this season.

The Firebirds doubled its lead 51 seconds later. After a faceoff win, John Hayden skated the down the left wing and beat Cuda goalie Laurent Brossoit with a backhander to the short side for his 13th goal of the season. Mitchell Stephens recorded the only assist on Hayden’s second goal in his last 30 games.

San Jose (39-27-2-2-82 points) only generated six shots in the opening frame despite having the period’s only power play opportunity. Firebirds goalie Logan Terness had a quiet opening 20 minutes.

The second period featured a much better offensive effort by San Jose despite a scoreless period. The Cuda outshot the Firebirds 14-9, including a flurry of shots and scoring chances in the final minute of the middle frame, only to have Terness come up with big saves to keep a goose egg on the scoreboard for San Jose heading into the second intermission.

San Jose cut the deficit in half early in the third period with a 5-on-3 power play goal. Kasper Halttunen sent a puck into the crease that was blocked out in front. Filip Bystedt made a quick backhand pass out to Quentin Musty who buried a one-timer past Terness for his 20th goal of the season at the 3:10 mark.

Coachella Valley regained its two-goal lead at the 12:33 mark. Cooper Marody gathered the puck from the end boards and skated back up top before unloading a wrist shot that beat Brossoit through a sea of traffic in front of the crease for his 11th goal of the season.

The Firebirds put the game away just over two minutes later when a shot by Lleyton Roed sneaked underneath the pads of Brossoit and Marody tucked home the rebound for his second goal of the game and 12th of the season at the 14:48 mark.

Terness (1-0-1) finished the game stopping 30 of the 31 shots to earn his first victory in the AHL. Brossoit (15-10-1) made 27 saves on 31 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-3 on the power play. Coachella Valley went 0-for-2.

SAN JOSE–San Jose opened up the scoring with Kasper Halttunen scoring his 15th goal of the season to make it an early 1-0 San Jose lead. Henderson tied the game at 1-1 when Jackson Hallum scored his tenth goal of the season. Two minutes later, Henderson took their first 2-1 lead of the game when Braedon Bowman scored his 12th goal of the season.

Henderson’s Trevor Connelly extended their lead to 3-1 when he scored his 13th goal of the season. Henderson secured their win when Matyas Sapovaliv scored an empty net goal to make it 4-1.

After the first period, San Jose outshot Henderson ten to seven. After the second period, San Jose outshot Henderson 8-6. After the third period, Henderson outshot San Jose 15-9.

Powerplay goals played a role in Saturday night’s game. Saturday night, San Jose went 1/4 while Henderson went 1/3.

After getting pulled Friday night, Laurent Brossoit made the start for San Jose. Making 24 saves on 27 shots, Brossoit recorded Saturday night’s loss. For Henderson, Carl Lindbom made the start. Making 25 saves on 26 shots, Lindbom recorded Saturday night’s win.

The Henderson Silver Knights picked up a three goal win over the San Jose Barracuda 9-6 at Lee’s Family Forum Friday night. Henderson got out to an early start, scoring twice in a three minute span. Raphael Lavoie opened up the scoring, scoring his 26th goal of the season to make it 1-0.

Three minutes later, Matyas Sapovaliv scored his 16th goal of the season to extend their lead to 2-0. San Jose cut the lead in half on their first powerplay opportunity. Kasper Halttunen, scoring his sixth powerplay goal of the season, made it a 2-1 game. Quentin Musty and Oliver Wahlstrom recording the assists.

Restoring their 2 goal lead, Henderson’s Mitch McLain scored his 21st goal of the season to make it 3-1, just 34 seconds into the second period. San Jose cut into the lead again, this time Luca Cagnoni scored his eighth goal of the season. Egor Afanasyev and Patrick Giles recording the assists. Scoring his second of the night, Raphael Lavoie to make it 4-2. A minute later, San Jose’s Filip Bystedt scored his 21st goal of the season to make it 4-3. Luca Cagnoni and Braden Hache recording the assists.

Three minutes later, San Jose tied the game at 4-4 when Colin White scored his 20th goal of the season. Luca Cagnoni and Oliver Wahlstrom recording the assists. To regain their 5-4 lead, Trevor Connelly scored his 12th goal of the season. Extending that lead and getting the hat trick, Raphael Lavoie scored his third of the game to make it 6-4 with 20 seconds left in the second.

Making it 7-4 a minute and a half into the third, Kai Uchaz scored his 17th goal of the season. Cutting into the lead agaim, Colin White scored his second of the game to make it 7-5. Making it a one goal game, Lucas Vanroboys scored his fourth of the season. Brendan Hoffman and Nolan Allan recording the assists. To regain the lead, Matyas Sapovaliv scored an empty netter. To secure the win, Jakub Brabenec scored another empty netter.

After the first period, Henderson outshot San Jose ten to nine. After the second period, San Jose outshot Henderson 15-12. After the third period, San Jose outshot Henderson 11-10.

Former Silver Knights goalie Laurent Brossoit got the start for San Jose. Making 16 saves on 22 shots before being pulled from Friday night’s game, Brossoit recorded Friday night’s, loss. Gabriel Carriere who came into the game in the third period, made seven saves on eight shots. For Henderson, Cameron Whitehead got the start. Making 28 saves on 34 shots, Whitehead recorded tonight’s win.

The Barracuda will be back in action Saturday night, against this same Henderson team, closing out a four game season series against the Silver Knights.

Barracuda extend losing streak to 2, fall 5-2 to San Diego Gulls

SAN JOSE-The San Jose Barracuda couldn’t maintain taking a 5-2 loss to the San Diego Gulls at Tech CU on Tuesday afternoon in the South Bay. San Diego opened up the scoring, netting their first goal just two minutes into the game. Matthew Phillips scored his 14th goal of the season, Roger McQueen registering the lone assist.

San Jose tied it at 1-1 when Oliver Wahlstrom scored his 24th goal of the season. Colin White registering the primary assist and Filip Bystedt registering the secondary assist. San Jose took their first lead of the game when Patrick Giles scored his tenth goal of the season. Nolan Allan registered the primary assist and Donovan Houle registering the secondary assist.

San Diego tied the game at 2-2 when Sasha Pastujov scored his 20th goal of the season. Sam Colagenlo registering the primary assist and Nikolas Brouillard registered the secondary assist. San Diego then took the 3-2 lead when Nathan Gaucher scored his 13th goal of the season. Nikolas Brouillard registered the primary assist while Nico Myatovic registered the secondary assist.

San Diego extended their lead to 4-2 when Sam Colangelo scored his sixth powerplay goal of the season. Tristan Luneau registered the primary assist and Sasha Pastujov registered the secondary assist. San Diego sealed the win when Nathan Gaucher scored his second of the game to make it 5-2.

After the first period, San Jose outshot San Diego 11-8. After the second period, both teams had equally ten shots on goal. After the third period, San Jose outshot San Diego 16-8.

Coming into Tuesday’s game, San Jose was second on the powerplay and third on the penalty kill. For Tuesday, San Jose went 1/4 on the powerplay. For San Diego, they came in seventh on the powerplay and first on the penalty kill. For Tuesday, San Diego went 1/3 on the powerplay.

Laurent Brossoit was Tuesday’s starting goalie for San Jose. Making 21 saves on 35 shots, Brossoit recorded Tuesday’s loss. For San Diego, Calle Clang was Tuesday’s starting goalie. Making 35 saves on 37 shots, Clang recorded Tuesday’s win.
