OAKLAND — Last week, the Raiders suffered their worst loss in 2018 losing to the Seattle Seahawks 27-3 in London, England in front of 84,922 fans (mainly Seahawks fans) at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon that saw their record fall to 1-5 on the season.

Starting quarterback Derek Carr, who completed 23-of-31 passes for just 142 yards, but was harassed by Seattle all day as the Seahawks sacked Carr six times. Mind you, Oakland’s offensive line was decimated by injuries with guard Kelechi Osemeli (knee) missing the game and two rookies in Kolton Miller and Brandon Parker starting at both tackle positions.

Against Seattle, Oakland’s offense totaled just 185 yards and completed just 33 percent of their third down opportunities (4-of-12). Seattle jumped out to a 27-0 lead in the fourth quarter before undrafted rookie kicker Matt McCrane booted a 43-yard field goal to put Oakland on the board.

Carr lost both forced fumbles by Seattle’s defense, but didn’t throw an interception for the first time this season. Heading into Week 6, Carr threw an NFL-high eight interceptions on the year.

At the bye week, Carr has thrown for 1,783 yards and seven touchdowns while completing 71.7 percent of his passes, which ranks third among all starting quarterbacks.

He did apparently injure his left arm (non-throwing) in the latter stages of the fourth quarter, which will be monitored throughout the bye week.

Running back Marshawn Lynch has rushed for 376 yards on 90 carries with three scores, which leads the Silver and Black.

Tight end Jared Cook who has been Carr’s most trusted receiver this season, leads Oakland in catches (32) and receiving yards (400) to go along with two touchdowns scored. Wide receiver Jordy Nelson leads the team with three touchdown receptions.

Through the team’s first six games of the season, Oakland’s offense ranks 28th in points per game (18.3), 15th in yards per game (373.5), passing yards (281.0) and 24th in rushing yards per games (92.4). Oakland has scored over 20 points in just two games this season (lost 28-20 in Miami in Week 3 and won 45-42 in overtime against Cleveland at home in Week 4).

Seattle’s offense racked up 369 yards of total offense against the Raiders on Sunday. Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson threw for 222 yards on 17-of-23 passes with three touchdowns and one interception. Wilson led Seattle to two touchdowns on their first three drives of the game, and made it look easy in the process. Oakland’s defense looked confused by Wilson’s playmaking ability, which allowed Seattle to convert 9-of-13 third down attempts (69 percent).

Wide receiver Doug Baldwin led Seattle with six catches and 91 yards, while Wilson threw touchdown passes to Jaron Brown, David Moore and Tyler Lockett.

For the season, Oakland’s defense ranks 28th in points surrendered (29.3), yards (398.5), passing yards (266.7) and 28th in rushing yards (131.8).

Linebacker Tahir Whitehead leads Oakland with 43 total tackles (30 solo and 13 assisted), while fellow linebacker Bruce Irvin has three of the team’s seven sacks.

Oakland has four interceptions as a team, with four players each recording one.

Following the team’s bye week, Oakland will host Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts at the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum in Week 8. Game time has been set for 1:05 pm PT on CBS.

Jazz ruin Kings’ Opening Night with 123-117 road win at Golden 1 Center

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — NBA opening night is a special night for every team.  It’s a time when every team believes in themselves, despite what the rosters may indicate, possible predictions and off-season hype that they have a chance to create some magic. For the Sacramento Kings, it’s the opportunity for ultimate redemption, like, say, Wednesday night versus the Utah Jazz at Golden 1 Center. Also, a chance to pave a path back to the playoffs after 12 years of being bottom-feeders in the West. With a significant amount of young talent like De’Aaron Fox and Marvin Bagley, Sacramento is looking to progress into the future and it all starts tonight…or not.

The Kings looked like they were hoping to keep the hope alive. With less than eight minutes to go in the first quarter Sacramento held a 9-0 lead over Utah. Sacramento would hold a 10-plus lead for the majority of the quarter, thanks to early contributions from Buddy Hield. Utah rallied early and closed the gap behind seven points, thanks to Joe Ingles. The first quarter ended with a four-point advantage for Sacramento, 34-30.

The Jazz were in control during second and third quarters, while the Kings seemingly couldn’t catch a break with the referees and found themselves in foul trouble in the first three quarters. Rudy Gobert showcased his tremendous length and proved why he is one of the best big men in the NBA. Going into into the fourth quarter, Gobert had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Kings got contributions from many different places with five players with double-digits, but trailed by six at the start of the fourth quarter, 93-87.

The Kings never lost the fire they had going in the game, starting the fourth quarter with energy and refusing to let the Jazz walk away with an easy win. Willie Cauley-Stein went on to be Sacramento’s leading scorer with 23 points. Hield and Fox scored 21 and 19 points, respectively; but the Kings’ real standouts were Nemanja Bjelica and Yogi Ferrell, whose clutch effort plays kept the Kings competitive. Ferrell caused two jump balls through four quarters, the second coming at a crucial late stage in the game as the Kings were trying to close the gap in the fourth quarter.  Bjelica was one of the Kings’ most potent scorers, pouring in 18, including a fourth quarter three-pointer.

In the end, both teams scored 30 points apiece, and the Kings fell by the same third quarter deficit of six points. Even still, Sacramento played with great effort and well enough to be competitive, keeping up with a Utah team that’s considered to be one of the better teams in the West. The Kings can look back at this game for growth, and keep the hope for a better season.

Final: The Jazz defeated the Kings 123-117.

Up Next: The Kings travel to Smoothie King Center to take on the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, October 19 at 5:00 pm PT on NSCA and FSNO.

SAN JOSE–The San José Sharks will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Night for the second consecutive year when they host the New York Islanders at the SAP Center this Saturday, October 20 at 7:30 PM.

Los Tiburones got their start in 1991-1992 as they played at the Cow Palace in Daly City, Calif. In 1993 they moved to the SAP Center in San José, where they have been playing exciting hockey for their very loyal steady fan base in the South Bay. I remember covering them since their very first game at the Cow Palace in 1991 as they lost to the Vancouver Canucks, 5-2, later with Telemundo Channel 48, we filmed the new and current location in San José when the arena was under construction, interviewed the surrounding businesses, and all the excitement that has brought to San José, their fans and to the overall economy of the Bay Area’s largest city. Was there in their greatest achievement, when they made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2016 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Once the “pequeños” Tiburones, now they have “grown up.” They are 27 years old and they have joined the ranks of the following Bay Area professional teams that also broadcast in Spanish: Athletics, Giants, Raiders, 49ers and Earthquakes.

The Spanish Broadcast this Sunday will air on KIQI 1010AM/990AM Bay Area/San Francisco/Oakland/Sacramento, 98.5 HD-2 for South Bay and NBC California SAP (Secondary Audio Channel).

#1 London will be covering the Sacramento Kings opener at Golden 1 Center as the Kings host the Utah Jazz. London talks about all the excitement surrounding opening night.

#2 The San Francisco 49ers lost a crucial close game to the Green Bay Packers 33-30 in a game that went right down to the wire. Is this game viewed as an improvement game for San Francisco?

#3 It’s a series that has gone back and forth that saw the Red Sox win game one and the Astros in game two and now the Sox in game three. There’s no doubt the two best teams in the American League battling in the ALCS.

#4 With the Golden State Warriors losing four of their five preseason games, any indication that this Warriors team is getting older slowing down and show signs of fatigue or they just didn’t show all their cards in the preseason? Looks like they answered that question with a big win over the OKC Thunder on Tuesday night.

#5 The Oakland Raiders’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in London was one of the low points of this season. With the team at 1-5, is this team getting away from head coach Jon Gruden?

Warriors start season with win over OKC Thunder 108-100

photo from goldenstateofmind.com: Forward Paul George (13) the OKC Thunder pushes against the Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry (30) on opening night at Oracle Arena in Oakland on Tuesday night

By Jerry Feitelberg

OAKLAND — The Golden State Warriors, after unfurling their sixth NBA Championship banner and receiving their rings, started their quest for the third championship in a row and fourth in five seasons with a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder 108-100 at Oracle Arena on Tuesday night. It was not easy as both the Warriors and Thunder were not in mid-season form. Both teams play looked ragged at times, but the Warriors played defense down the stretch to win the game.

The Warriors did get off to a good start in the first quarter as they outscored the Thunder 31-23. Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and Klay Thompson looked sharp. Things changed a bit in the second period, but the Warriors outscored the Thunder by two to finish the first half with a 10-point lead, 57-47. Curry finished the half with 19 points, and he made five 3-point shots in six attempts. Durant had 15, and Thompson added 10. Draymond Green made just one bucket good for 2 points, but he showed his defensive prowess with nine rebounds and five assists in the first half. Dennis Schroder, a former Atlanta Hawk, led the Thunder with 12 points. Steve Adams had nine, and Paul George kicked in with six.

The Warriors, who owned the third quarter last season, struggled as the Thunder fought their way back into the game. OKC started the period with a 22-9 run and took the lead 67-66. From that point forward, the lead seesawed between the two teams. The Thunder won the period 32-26, but the Warriors still finished with a four-point lead 83-79. The Warriors could not pull away from the Thunder until late in the fourth quarter. The Warriors led by four 95-91 with a little of six minutes left in the game. OKC cut the deficit to two 99-97, but Curry made a layup and got fouled on the play. He made the free throw, and the lead was back to five, 102-97. With time running out, Kevon Looney made a two-point bucket that ignited the crowd. Durant scored to put Golden State up 106-99. However, Durant landed awkwardly on his right shoulder, and the Arena went silent. The big guy rose to his feet and shook off the injury, and the fans let out a huge collective sigh of relief. Durant scored the last bucket of the night, and the Warriors finished the night with their first victory of the season.

Game Notes and Stats: At times, as mentioned above, the play looked sloppy on both sides. The Warriors turned the ball over 20 times, and head coach Steve Kerr was not happy as he wants the team to handle the ball better and keep turnovers to under fifteen. Kerr knows his players are still getting in shape and looked tired, saying: “We didn’t look much like ourselves. It’s not surprising either. We need a couple more weeks.”

Kevin Durant who played well as he knocked down 27 points and had 8 rebounds and six assists said this about the team’s performance.

“I love who we are, game 1 of 82,” Durant said. “Just keep grinding.”

Steph Curry led the team with 32 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists. Curry  did not make a 3-pointer in the second half and ended the night with 5 for 9 in that department. Klay Thompson finished with 10. Draymond Green did not score in the second half, but he finished the night with an astounding 13 rebounds and 5 assists. Green admitted that he was tired, but he did not play much in the preseason as he was resting a sore knee. The Warriors big men, Kevon Looney and Damian Jones, played well. Looney scored 10 points and had 10 boards. Jones had a career-high 12 points, 3 rebounds and 2 boards.

Paul George caught fire in the second half and finished the night with 27 points for OKC. Steve Adams finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Dennis Schroder added 21 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. The Thunder’s leader and All-Star guard Russell Westbrook did not play as he was sidelined with a knee injury.

Up Next: The Warriors travel to Salt Lake City to play the Utah Jazz Friday night. Game time will be at 7:30 pm PT and will be shown on ESPN.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Brewers shut out Dodgers have a shot to win this series; A’s part ways with flagship station

photo from jsonline.com: Milwaukee Brewers’ Jeremy Jeffress (left) and catcher Erik Kratz celebrate after the Brewers shut down the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-0, in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series on Oct. 15, 2018, in Los Angeles.

On That’s Amaury’s Commentary:

#1 The Milwaukee Brewers look like a dominating club. They took game one of the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers then dropped game two, but came back and shutout the Dodgers 4-0 in game three and this is after they swept the Colorado Rockies during the NLDS.

#2 The Red Sox and the Astros are both tied in the ALCS. The Sox tied the series with a 7-5 win and play in Houston tonight.

#3 The Oakland A’s decided to part way wit their flagship station 95.7FM the Game. The A’s said the lack of “promotion and interest” by the station was the reason behind the move.

#4 The A’s are without a flagship station and this is going to be a big concern. Where can they go? They’re considering streaming their games.

#5 Should team president David Kaval and the A’s considered staying at The Game until they find another radio station? Right now, the A’s are nomads for radio.

Barracuda shoot down the Roadrunners in 3-2 shootout win

By Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Alex True was the only one to score in the shootout and that was enough for the San Jose Barracuda (4-0-0-1) as they came back to defeat the Tucson Roadrunners (3-0-0-1) 3-2 in a shootout victory at SAP Center on Monday evening. This is the best start to a season in the Barracuda’s history.

The first period didn’t feature much action as both teams combined for just 15 shots. San Jose had two descent chances to take the lead. Dylan Gambrell, just recalled back from the Sharks, had his short-handed back hand attempt stopped by Roadrunners goalie Hunter Miska (1-0-1) with eight minutes left in the first period. Manny Wiederer had his shot from the slot ring off the post with five minutes remaining in the opening frame.

Gambrell broke the deadlock late in the second period. Nick DeSimone won a battle along the right boards, fed a pass over to Francis Perron who then one-timed a quick pass over to Gambrell skating in from the point and he wired a shot into the left corner of the goal for his third goal of the season at the 14:43 mark.

“I think we were getting kinda too cute at the blue line,” said Gambrell. “We started chipping pucks in (getting them) below the goal line getting stuff to the net. (The goal) shifted the momentum of it.”

Dakota Mermis would get the equalizer for Tucson just under two minutes later when he was able to keep the puck inside the Cuda zone on the left side of the blue line. He then sent in what looked like an innocent looking shot on goal that sneaked past Cuda goalie Antoine Bibeau (2-0-1) for his first goal of the season at the 16:15 mark.

Former Cuda forward Adam Helewka, who was sent to the Arizona Coyotes in the June trade for defenseman Kyle Wood, would come back to haunt San Jose when he tipped in a pass by Laurent Dauphin just 51 seconds after Mermis’ goal. Helewka was able to skate in past the Cuda defense and was all alone to tip the puck past Bibeau for his fourth goal of the season at 17:06.

San Jose came back in the third period to tie the game up at 2-2, thanks to a delay of game penalty that sent them on a power play. They would need only nine seconds to convert as Perron rifled a wrist shot from the middle of the slot past Miska into the upper left corner of the goal for his fourth goal of the season at the 12:20 mark. Gambrell and Jeremy Roy received assists.

“It was a scrambling puck, a battle in front of the net,” said Perron. “(There was) a good screen in front of the goalie and I just picked my spot and it went in. It was a huge goal for us.”

Helewka had a breakaway attempt with under three minutes left in the overtime period, but Bibeau stood his ground and made the save on Helewka’s backhander.

San Jose had a glorious chance to end it in overtime. A slashing penalty on Kyle Capobianco with 1:47 left in overtime gave the Cuda a power play to finish out the game. Then Dauphin took a tripping penalty with 41 seconds left to give the Cuda a two-man advantage. However, San Jose was unable to capitalize.

“I think so,” said head coach Roy Sommer when asked if this was the most satisfying win on the season thus far. “When you’re down and you find a way to tie it up and then you win it in overtime, it makes it a little special.”

Both goalies put on a clinic in the shootout. Bibeau, who was perfect in the shootout, finished the game with 31 saves on 33 shots for the victory. Miska had 34 saves on 36 shots in suffering the defeat.

“I was hoping we would score in overtime,” said Bibeau. “I didn’t want a shootout after what happened last game. I was ready and I wanted to be aggressive tonight and dictate their play of their shootout attempt.”

GAME NOTES: San Jose went 1/5 on the power play. Tucson was 0/3.

Cuda defenseman Zach Frye was injured halfway through the second period when a puck hit him in the face. He did not return to the game.

Fisticuffs!
Tucson’s Trevor Cheek took exception to a clean hit by San Jose’s Jeffery Viel and the two had a spirited brawl at center ice with just under three minutes left in the third period.

The announced attendance was 2,095.

UP NEXT: The Cuda travel up to Stockton on Saturday, October 20 to begin a home and home series with the Heat at 6:00 pm PT at Stockton Arena.
