The winless San Jose State Spartans are coming off a tough loss to the Army Black Knights. Their next opponent, the San Diego State Aztecs, likely won’t make it any easier for them unless if they run out of gas. The last time these teams played each other, San Diego State blewout San Jose State 52-7 inside CEFCU Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

Here’s what you need to know about Saturday’s conference game between these teams.

Road trip
For the first time since the September 22 game at Oregon, San Jose State has a road game. San Jose State recently completed their first three-game homestand in 11 seasons. Recently, San Jose State hosted Hawaii on September 29, Colorado State on October 6, and Army West Point (52-3) on October 13. In 2007, San Jose State hosted UC Davis, Idaho and Hawaii on consecutive weeks.

Road victory, maybe?
San Jose State’s last win on the road was a 16-14 victory over Fresno State to wrap up the 2016 season. Since then, San Jose State has been 0-8 on the road.

Feast or famine
In its last two games, San Jose State outscored its two opponents, Colorado State and Army, 30-24, in the third quarter. Against Colorado State, San Jose State overcame a 28-0 halftime deficit to take a 30-28 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Against Army West Point, a 14-3 halftime deficit mushroomed into San Jose State trailing 38-3 after three quarters.

Interception streak ends
San Jose State’s six-game streak intercepting a pass, which began with the 2017 regular season finale against Wyoming ended following the Army West Point loss. Army was 2-of-5 passing for 54 yards and a touchdown. San Jose State has nine interceptions in the first six games this season and are tied tenth nationally in pass interceptions.

Three offensive lines so far
After six games, San Jose State has used three different starting offensive line combinations. Although Jackson Snyder, Troy Kowalski and Jake Colman have started in every game this season, none of the three have started every game at the same position.

Snyder opened the season at right tackle and has been the starting left tackle since the Washington State. Kowalski moved from left tackle to left guard and Colman moved from left guard to right guard in the same game.

Trevor Robbins had started each of the first five games at center. Kyle Hoppe replaced Robbins in the starting lineup against Army West Point. Deano Motes now has five starts at right tackle. Jesse Chamberlain started the opener at right guard.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Oakland Athletics in 1978–a Unique Radio Story

By: Amaury Pi-González

As I was doing weekend games for the Oakland Athletics’ Spanish radio on KBRG 105.3FM, San Francisco in 1978, something happened that year that was truly unique. A’s owner Charlie O Finley was trying to move the team to Denver and he had no commercial radio station in English to carry the games.

To my left in the A’s press box–I believe at that time was Box 19, sat two young UC Berkeley students broadcasting the games for KALX, one of whom was Larry Baer, who approached Finley during mid season about doing play-by-play and Charlie sold them the broadcast rights for $1.

Because the Spanish station was a commercial FM station, we had a greater signal than the UC Berkeley station, which was just a handful of watts enough to be heard at the UC Campus, and not even in the Coliseum’s parking lot. I was asked after each half-inning to repeat the score of the game, but in English. And I did.

Those were the days were radio was truly still king in the broadcast business, way before social media came about. To refresh our memories, ESPN was born in 1979, CNN in 1980 and those were trailblazers in our business. One was a 24-hour all sports, the other one 24-hour all news, but both were national. It’s a totally different world today in 2018. People talk about streaming games live on Facebook, YouTube is getting into the action, everybody has a cell phone and everything that happens is transmitted instantly. During Game 4 of the ALCS, a fan in right field “interfered” with what looked like a home run by the Astros’ José Altuve, which was declared an out by veteran umpire Joe West. The name of the fan, the video of the controversial play was transmitted immediately to the whole world. Hundreds of millions of people knew what happened at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Back in the day (referring to the 1970’s), if you covered a game, you could not report on that game while the game was taking place (unless you/station) owned the broadcast rights. Some postseasons that I covered, as a reporter, not as a play-by-play person, I had to sign a form that specified my outfit would not report during the game. Only before and after the game(s) did I had legal permission to report.

What is coming in broadcasting the next 20 years, I will leave that for your great imagination. And everybody has an imagination. Unless you are Rodney Dangerfield, who once said: “When I was a kid I was so poor….I could not afford an imaginary friend!”

Couture Hat Trick, Revamped Power Play Key to 5-1 Sharks Win over Sabres

By Jerry Feitelberg

SAN JOSE–The San Jose Sharks power play clicked in a big way Thursday night, pushing team teal to a 5-1 win over the visiting Buffalo Sabres. Logan Couture scored his third career hat trick, Joe Pavelski picked up a power play strike and Joonas Donskoi also lit the lamp a man up to give the home team a win in the debut of their new Stealth jerseys. Jake McCabe lit the lamp for Buffalo, the only shot out of 25 to beat Sharks netminder Martin Jones.

With early season power play woes leading to a bottom-five power play for the Sharks entering play Thursday, changes were made to the first power play unit. It’s safe to assume assistant coach Steve Spott, power play coach for San Jose, found the right mix.

Kyle Okposo drew a double-minor for high sticking just 1:45 into the game, giving the Sharks their first man advantage. With time expiring on the first minor, Joonas Donskoi potted his second goal of the season 3:35 into the game. Logan Couture fired back rapid fire, beating Buffalo keeper Carton Hutton for his second goal of the campaign just 27 seconds later for a 2-0 Sharks edge and two power play goals on two opportunities.

San Jose didn’t score in the second and Buffalo’s McCabe scooped up a rebound for his first goal of the year 1:35 into the period to cut the Sharks lead to 2-1. The Sharks dominated the third though, with Logan Couture scoring the lone even strength Sharks goal of the game 4:54 into the third for his second of the game.

Joe Pavelski scored San Jose’s third power play goal of the night over a whopping seven opportunities, moving San Jose to 19th in the league with a 17.8 percent success rate. Couture capped the hat trick off with an empty-net goal with 1:47 left in regulation.

Buffalo went 0-for-5 on the power play to cap a great special teams night for the Sharks. Evander Kane and Brent Burns each had a pair of assists. The Sharks welcome another team from the Empire State to the Shark Tank Saturday night. The Islanders come to town after shellacking the Los Angeles Kings Thursday night.

Cardinal hold off ASU’s late rally for 20-13 win

A late Arizona State Sun Devils’ rally fell short on Thursday, as the Stanford Cardinal held on for a 20-13 Pac-12 football victory at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

Sun Devils quarterback Manny Wilkins drove the ASU offense into the red zone in the last two minutes and 20 seconds of the fourth quarter. But with no time outs available, ASU could not stop the clock. All of ASU’s losses this season have been by a touchdown.

After the Cardinal (5-2 overall, 3-1 Pac-12) built a 20-6 lead with a big third quarter, ASU (3-4, 1-3) bounced back with seven minutes to play in the fourth quarter when Wilkins capped a 64-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, cutting the Stanford lead to 20-13.

Stanford snapped a 6-6 deadlock with 7:55 left in the third quarter when quarterback K.J. Costello connected with JJ Arcega-Whiteside for a 28-yard score. Five minutes later, Cameron Scarlett’s one-yard plunge put the Cardinal up 20-6.

Costello completed 22 of 29 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. Scarlett ran nine times for 54 yards and a touchdown. Bryce Love ran 11 times for 21 yards.

Arcega-Whiteside and Trenton Irwin each snared seven passes for the Cardinal. Arcega-Whiteside gained 91 reception yards and a touchdown; Irwin gained 79 reception yards. Jet Toner booted field goals of 21 and 31 yards in the first half.

Wilkins threw for 353 yards and a TD while completing 26 of 43 passes. Wilkins also led ASU in rushing with 41 yards on 11 carries. Eno Benjamin gained 38 yards on 11 attempts for the Devils.

Arizona State’s top pass catcher was K’Neal Harry with eight receptions for 91 yards.

The Cardinal return home on Saturday, October 27 for a 3:00 p.m. Pac-12 game against Washington State (5-1).

Fantasy Football Week 7 Thursday Night Written Rx Prescription

maxresdefault

By Doctor Vasu Vaddiparty

Week 7 of the NFL features two teams who don’t have or haven’t established an identity of what kind of team each will be. The Denver Broncos will travel to the desert to take on the Arizona Cardinals. Denver has gotten off to a 2-4 start with wins over the Raiders and the Seahawks. A tough loss last week against the Rams showed that they can play. They have a tough defense but has not played well as well as a pretty good running game. Von Miller leads the defense but has given up 154 points over the first 6 games. Some of their losses have been blowouts to the Jets where they gave up 34 points and 27 to the Ravens and Seahawks. Then they have had good games defensively holding the potent Rams to 23 and losing a tough Monday night battle with the division-leading Chiefs. They will face a rookie QB with two starts and is 1-1. Denver needs to rely on the running game and shutting down the run so they are forced to put the rookie in tough situations to convert first downs and TD’s.

The Cardinals have a 1-5 record in which their only win was against division rival San Francisco. One reason they won is because the 49ers turned the ball over five times and only won by 8 points. They are 0-5 in the other games that have produced little to nothing offensively even with one of the best RB and a WR who is found the fountain of youth. The Cardinals have scored 76 points in six games and that will not get it done. Defensively after a few mix-ups has responded well since 81 points in the last 4 games compared to 58 in the first two games. They have had tough losses as well including a GW-FG loss to Seattle and another 2-point loss to the Bears. Last weekend they were in the game until they ran out of gas in the 4th quarter against a stacked Minnesota team.

Which offenses will show up will be the question tonight but both defenses have out-performed their respective offenses.

The Thursday preview of Fantasy Football ramifications will be broken down below between the Broncos and Cardinals from Glendale to get you a good jump on your week.

Broncos

QB

Case Keenum was one of the FA names that came up for QB when the Vikings decided not to re-sign him in spite leading them to the NFC Championship Game losing to the eventual champion Eagles. Keenum has thrown for 1687 yards but leads the NFL in INT’s with 8. If he is forced to throw the ball in long situations it bodes very badly for the Broncos’ fortunes. Arizona’s defense is 14th in the league in passing yards but 31st in rushing yards allowed. Keenum needs to manage the game and establish the run and establish play-action when needed. How does this affect Fantasy Football looking for a good QB play? Keenum is a QB 2 or 3 this week. Denver will rely on its running game to be successful.

RB

Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman have combined for 618 yards and 3 TD’s with Lindsay leading the way with 346 yards. He is a good candidate for a starting RB vs. a 31st ranked run team of the Cardinals. The Broncos will be establishing the run and my bet is Lindsay will be the one to get the majority of carries. If you are looking for a guy with TD capability then Freeman would be your best bet.

WR / TE

The Broncos are led by Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas at WR. Both are No. 2 candidates for WR and are probably not good plays this week with the Broncos looking to establish the run. If there are no other candidates to play on your team then Sanders would be the best available pick as he has 40 catches and two TD’s. Jeff Heuermann is a serviceable TE but probably a No. 3 choice at TE.

Cardinals

QB

Josh Rosen was the 1st round pick for Arizona last spring and has started the last two games taking over for the ineffective and often-injured Sam Bradford. Rosen has mixed results going 1-1 with a win against the 49ers and a loss against the Vikings. Rosen has two TD’s and two INT’s. He has thrown for 626 yards in the two games. Rosen will look to throw the ball against the 14th ranked pass defense. With weapons offensively and hopefully the O-Line will protect Rosen to allow him to exploit the defense. Throwing the ball should be mixed in with the run as Denver has struggled against the run. Rosen has to be accurate and use the running game to his advantage. He is a good No. 2 option or realistically QB 1.5.

RB

David Johnson is a RB1 and an obvious choice to start. Denver’s defense against the run is ranked 32nd otherwise known as last in NFL. Johnson has come off injury in 2017 but had over 2000 yards from scrimmage in 2016. He is healthy and running the ball very well. His speed and power is a big asset to Josh Rosen learning the ropes at QB for a team that is 1-5. David Johnson is a must play for Fantasy this week. Arizona’s offense is 32nd in Rush yards but David Johnson is a fantasy starter.

WR/TE

Larry Fitzgerald has regained his form from years gone by. He has 22 catches for 215 yards but has yet to find the end zone. Fitz has a complimentary piece this year in rookie Christian Kirk. Kirk has had a successful rookie year with 25 catches and long TD catch against the 49ers. Both are good picks but probably No. 2 WR’s. Arizona’s offense is 31st in passing. TE is not an option for Fantasy as Jermaine Gresham and Ricky Seals-Jones  are pass catching and blocking TE’s who don’t contribute to the passing game as Rosen has really developed a rapport with Kirk more so than Fitzgerald. Seals-Jones is not a good matchup facing the Broncos.

Special Teams/Defense

Defenses have kind of switched from the beginning of the year to where they both have switched good to bad and bad to good. Arizona has improved the defense the last few weeks but still has a 1-5 record while Denver started 2-0 and now is 2-4 3 games behind KC. Neither defense is worth picking up in fantasy week. But neither offense has performed up to standard either. Stay away from defenses on Thursday night football.

Overall Matchup

Denver comes into the game as small -1 favorite with the total being at 42.5. The totals have been especially high for the league this season but this might be accurate being in that both teams offenses have not performed as expected. Denver has lost four in a row while Arizona is 1-1 since starting 0-4. Both teams passing games are adequate at best but both teams can run the ball. Denver’s defense has played terribly in losses to KC and the Jets but played better at home against the Rams. Still it’s not very good. The Cardinals look to have some synchronicity over the last two weeks since Rosen has taken over at QB. He has help with future HOF’er  Larry Fitzgerald, Christian Kirk at receivers plus the all-purpose, when healthy 1500 yds+ David Johnson in the backfield.

Not exactly the matchup that Fox or the NFL Network wanted, but every team has to play on a Thursday.

Arizona 17

Denver 16

49ers prep for Rams as injuries grow

By Jeremy Harness

SANTA CLARA–While the injury report keeps growing for the ailing San Francisco 49ers, there is a slither of hope on the horizon versus the undefeated Los Angeles Rams at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Receiver Marquise Goodwin is one guy who can take the top off of any defense, and he certainly did that Monday night in Green Bay, going for two scores in a final-seconds loss to the Packers.

The 49ers will need everything that he’s got if they are to have a chance against the Rams, who are coming off a narrow win in Seattle to stretch their record to 6-0.

It is possible that the 49ers could get fellow receiver Dante Pettis back this week, as he did practice in a limited fashion on Wednesday while recovering from the knee injury he suffered against the Chargers.

Another guy the team will desperately need is someone like Matt Breida, who scored a touchdown against the Packers despite suffering from shoulder and ankle injuries, the latter he suffered the week before against Arizona and made him questionable against Green Bay.

Breida appears that he will be able to play Sunday as well, as he was limited in practice on Wednesday.

On the defensive side of the ball, however, the 49ers are hurting, particularly in the secondary. Richard Sherman has made his way back on the field after a calf injury kept him out of a couple of games earlier in the year, but some of his teammates in the defensive backfield do not look like they will play.

Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who has been a prime target of opposing quarterbacks all season, suffered a concussion Monday night and did not practice on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Jimmie Ward and K’Waun Williams are dealing with hamstring and shoulder ailments, respectively, and those injuries kept them out of practice entirely.

For the Rams, the significant player on the injury report is Cooper Kupp, who did not practice Wednesday with a knee injury and is not expected to play Sunday. Meanwhile, defensive lineman Michael Brockers did not practice Wednesday with a knee injury, and he is questionable against the 49ers.
