LOS ANGELES—Cristian Arango has been carrying LAFC on his shoulders since Carlos Vela went down to injury as they fight for their playoff lives.

Arango had a brace and an assist in his team’s 3-1 over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday afternoon at Banc of California Stadium.

LAFC are unbeaten in its last two matches (1-0-1) and sit in eight place in the Western Conference with 37 points, one point behind Minnesota FC, who have 38 points and currently the final playoff berth. San Jose have lost three games in a row and and their fading playoff hopes suffered another blow with five games remaining in the season. They are in 10 tenth place with 33 points.

Vela has missed the Black & Gold’s last eight games with a hamstring injury. He missed three games at the beginning of the season with a different injury as well.

LAFC (10-12-7) drew first blood early in the match. In the third minute, a turnover by San Jose led to Arango sending a back pass into the middle of the box where Danny Musovski crashed in and buried a shot through two Quakes defenders and Quakes goalie JT Marcinkowski for his fourth goal of the season.

San Jose (8-12-9) had a chance in the 24th minute to even the score. Jeremy Ebobisse, who made his first appearance since suffering a head injury on September 4th, received the ball inside the box but his chip attempt into an empty net was swept away by Kim Moon-Hwan before the ball was able to cross the goal line.

Arango set up his first goal when he was able to get Jackson Yueill to concede a penalty inside the box in the 26th minute. Yueill made contact with Arango but the Colombian striker sold the penalty when he immediately went down in a heap on the pitch. Referee Alan Kelly ruled Yueill did enough to earn the penalty.

Two minutes later, Arango, better known as “Chicho” came up slowly, hesitated and then shot the ball to the left side, as Marcinkowki guessed to the right, to convert the penalty kick for his team leading seventh goal of the season.

San Jose had two scoring chances during stoppage time at the end of the first half but Ebobisse’s shot went high over the net and Benji Kinkanovic had his shot attempt blocked by an LAFC defender.

“I believe in the first half we were pretty inaccurate when we had the ball,” said Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda. “They put their chances away and we did not.”

Almeyda made all of his substitutions early in the second half as he looked to maintain the momentum his team seized late in the first half. He inserted Cade Cowell, Chris Wondolowski and Andy Rio in the 55th minute to keep the offensive pressure inside LAFC’s defensive zone.

In the 61st minute the moves paid off as San Jose cut the lead in half off a set piece. Chofis serviced a corner kick near the right post where Rios headed the ball past LAFC goalie Jamal Blackman over to Carlo Fierro, who came in as a sub to start the second half, and he knocked the ball off his chest into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

San Jose had three quality scoring chances in the final 15 minutes to even the match, but Blackman came away with highway robber each time. Cowell first chance in the 75th minute was a blazing shot from just outside the box that Blackman needed both hands to knock the ball away. Jack Skahan’s attempt in the 83rd minute was stoned away by Blackman.

Cowell’s second chance in the 83rd minute from outside the box was thwarted by a diving save thanks to the quick reflexes of Blackman that ended with frustration for San Jose.

“The first 20-30 minutes was tough I think,” said midfielder Shea Salinas. “But our team settled in and ended up playing well the second half. It just wasn’t enough.”

LAFC put the game away in the 88th minute when Brian Rodriguez won a challenge along the midfield sideline along with Yueill. Rodriguez created a two-on-one odd man rush and serviced a ball from left to right over to Arango who one-timed the ball into the far left corner for his second goal of the match and eighth of the season.

Blackman finished the match with five saves to earn the victory. Marcinkowski made two saves on four shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: Each team finished the match with three corner kicks.

Los Angeles FC won their first five meetings with the Earthquakes in MLS, outscoring them, 20-4. San Jose had won all four meetings since, the first team to beat LAFC four straight times in MLS play, regular season or playoffs.

After not allowing more than one goal in 11 straight matches (9 total goals conceded) from mid-July to mid-September, San Jose has conceded at least three goals in five of its last six games (16 total goals conceded). The only team the Earthquakes held under three goals in that time was LAFC (2-0 win on September 25).

Los Angeles FC has held opponents to just 9.9 shots per match, second fewest in MLS (NYCFC – 9.3), though opponents have scored with a league-high 14.9 percent of those shots. San Jose had a total of 15 shots in the match.

Eric Remedi has received 12 yellow cards this season, tied with Leandro González Pirez for most in MLS. Remedi has also been fouled 97 times, 14 more than any other player in the league in 2021.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: A disputed check swing and why rule should be changed

A moment that will be discussed for years to come the Wilmer Flores check swing ruled a strike by first base umpire Gabe Morales in the bottom of the ninth during the NLDS game 5 on Thu Oct 14, 2021 at Oracle Park in San Francisco for the last out against the Los Angeles Dodgers (AP News photo)

A Disputed Check Swing and Why Rule should be Changed

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Thousands of people at Oracle Park in San Francisco and millions across the country witnessed a terrible call by first base umpire Gabe Morales, (after a request asking for help, from the home plate umpire) decided a Wilmer Flores “swing” for the third strike, thus ending Game 5 which Dodgers won 5-4 over the Giants. Dodgers advanced to the NLCS and Giants went home for the winter.

During the past several years baseball has been changing many things, mostly trying to speed up the game. Here is one rule that they should change. What we all witness happens more often than you think, probably thousands of times during games in the regular season, but what made it much more blatant was it was the last out of a very important game with a huge television audience. TBS telecast of this game delivered the biggest audience this postseason so far.

Baseball uses six (6) umpires during the postseason, the regular four (4) on the infield, plus two (2) are added, one on left field and one in right field. We know this is done for the sake of accuracy because these are much more important games than the 162-regular season affairs. This rule (see MLB rules below) should be revised and possibly changed. The rule in question is very nebulous.

For the record: Wilmer Flores, prior to the questioned at-bat and during his career, never got a hit from Max Scherzer in 17 turns at the plate with 8 strikeouts. The probability that Flores was going to get a hit against this pitcher was very low, but just like baseball is not played on paper but on the field, baseball is also not played in probability but in actual time on the field. The Giants, including their manager Gabe Kapler showed a lot of class, considering what happened during what was out number 27 and the last one of that crucial game for both teams.

As of today I have never met a robot and had a conversation with one or somebody that walked on water and never made a mistake, I believe umpire Gabe Morales also was very candid after the game when he said the following (quote) “Check swings are one of the hardest calls we have. I don’t have the benefit of multiple camera angles when I’m watching it live. When it happened live, I thought he went, so that’s why I called it a swing.” (end of quote) Check swings are interpreted many ways by different umpires, not reliable when it comes to consistency. It is like the argument “what came first the chicken or the egg”?

Major League Baseball has a lot on their agenda this winter, especially negotiating a new CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) describing the rules of employment and financial structure of the game. The most recent was finalized on November 30, 2016 and last until December 1, 2021. This is a big deal for both sides, owners, and players, and will take a very good effort from both sides.

I am sure MLB still will have time on how to correct the controversial “check swing” rule, a very confusing rule that makes umpires more vulnerable and open for mistakes based on interpretation. This is the link to the Official Baseball rules. http://mlb.mlb.com/documents/0/8/0/268272080/2018_Official_Baseball_Rules.pdf

A late rally by California Bears fell short on Friday night against Oregon, as the No. 9-ranked Ducks held on for a 24-17 Pac-12 football victory at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.

Oregon improved to 5-1 overall.

Ducks quarterback Anthony Brown scored the go-ahead touchdown on an 11-yard run with 5:42 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Ducks’ defense then held Cal on downs inside their 5-yard line as time ran out.

Brown completed 20 of 28 passes for 244 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. He also ran 13 times for 44 yards. Oregon’s Travis Dye gained 145 yards on 19 carries, and caught seven passes for 73 yards.

Golden Bears quarterback Chase Garbers threw for 248 yards, two touchdowns, completing 25 of 45 passes without a pick. Christopher Brooks was Cal’s top ground gainer with 69 yards on 14 carries. Kekoa Crawford caught six passes, Nikko Remigo caught four and Jeremiah Hunter had 78 receiving yards on three catches.

Cal (1-5) drove 67 yards on its final drive in regulation, moving to the Ducks 7-yard line with less than a minute to play following an Oregon pass interference penalty. After Garbers was sacked, followed by an incomplete pass, the Bears called time out
On 4th-and-8 from the Oregon 7, Garbers completed a 5-yard pass to Kekoa Crawford, putting Cal at the Ducks 3.

With Cal looking at 3rd-and-goal, Oregon called time out with 14 seconds left. After Garbers gained one yard, Cal called time out with 10 seconds to play.  Out of the time out, Garbers threw an incompletion on 4th-and-2.

Cal took a 17-10 lead at 14:29 of the fourth quarter on Garbers’ 4-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Reinwald. The Ducks responded nearly two minutes later when Brown connected with Jaylon Redd on a 20-yard scoring pass, tying the game at 17-17.

An 11-yard touchdown run by Travis Dye gave the Ducks their second lead of the night at 10-7 with 5:55 remaining in the first half. Dario Longhetto’s 45-yard field goal at 8:45 of the third quarter tied the contest at 10-10.

Oregon scored first early in the first quarter when Camden Lewis booted a 49-yard field goal. The Bears took their first lead at 5:57 of the first period on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Garbers to Jake Tonges, putting Cal up 7-3.

Next week, the Bears return home to host Colorado. Game time is 12:30 p.m.

Warriors Finish Pre-Season Unbeaten 119-97

By Barbara Mason

Friday night the Golden State Warriors (5-0) took on the winless Portland Trail Blazers (0-4) in Portland. The Warriors were going for a perfect pre-season coming into this game. They have won with and without Golden State’s Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. They have had a great pre-season the Warriors defeating the Trailblazers 119-97 on Friday night to complete the pre season schedule.

The Trailblazers host the Sacramento Kings for their opener on Wed Oct 20th. The Kings also had a perfect pre season. The Blazers Damian Lillard did not play in this game citing rest as the reason and should be ready for the opener . After all it is the pre-season and you want your starters to be ready and rested when the regular season gets underway next week.

Despite a shaky defense, the Trail Blazers took a 27-17 lead as the first quarter came to an end. The Warriors had only shot 29% in the quarter.

We saw something that we rarely see from Golden State and that was two missed free throws from Curry in the second quarter. We also saw a tenacious Portland defense which was not at all expected.

As the quarter wore on the Portland defense begin to wear down under the constant Golden State offensive pressure. Curry had a great first half with 21 points, a Curry flurry if you will with four four three pointers. At the half Golden State had taken a 55-51 lead. Portland’s CJ McCollum finished the half with 18 points.

The Warriors completely turned the tables on the Trail Blazers in the third quarter. They went on a crazy run and led 98-77. Curry had 41 points in three quarters and would sit out the fourth quarter.

The Golden State bench sealed the blow-out in the fourth quarter 21-20. The Warrior bench finished off Portland with an incredible performance. Nemanja Bjelica, Damian Lee and Moses Moody all had great play off the bench. The Warriors had done something that they had never done and that was go undefeated in the pre-season.

Golden State opens up the regular season next Tuesday when the 2021- 2022 season gets underway. Golden State will be taking on the Los Angeles Lakers. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: Olson to get more expanded role as offensive coach; more play calling this Sunday in Denver

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 Rich with former head coach Jon Gruden gone next man up on offense is offensive coordinator Greg Olson who is looking at an expanded role in running the Raiders offense.

#2 Olson 58, will be doing the play calling and he’ll be getting the plays to quarterback Derek Carr. Gruden has been the play caller for the offense since 2018.

#3 Olson spoke to the media Thursday afternoon saying not a lot will be changed with the offense. Olson said there might be a different flow but don’t expect any major changes from the playbook with Carr’s play calling.

#4 How much of an advantage does it have to be for Olson to have been working with Carr since Carr’s rookie season under center?

#5 How much of advantage will it be for Carr to throw against the Denver Broncos defense who has been struggling. The Broncos got beat rather handedly by the Pittsburgh Steelers in their last game Sunday 27-19 in Pittsburgh.

#2 On the other hand their opponent for last night the Los Angeles Lakers (0-6) took their sixth straight pre season loss not winning a single game in the pre season. Was this a matter of trying to find themselves or they just simply have no chemistry?

#3 Amongst the Lakers the veterans just seemed to not have enough throughout this pre season, LeBron, Anthony Davis, Carmelo Anthony, and Russell Westbrook with all that talent it’s got to be surprising the Lakers couldn’t get one win.

#4 The Kings on the other hand are getting some offense help from some of their players De’Aaron Fox, Terence Davis, Harrison Barnes, and Richaun Holmes talk about their contribution and what to look forward to going into the regular season.

#1 Daniel, in the last two games the Cal Bears (1-4) have convincingly been defeated Sep 25 in Seattle by the Washington Huskies (2-3) 31-24 and Oct 2 by the Washington State Cougars (3-3) 21-6. How much would you allude the loses to a break down in the Cal defense.

#2 In the last game against the Cougars quarterback Jayden de Laura threw for 25-41, 219 yards, three touchdowns, and was intercepted twice.

#3 The Cougars scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and Cal could only answer with six points in the first quarter for all their scoring for the night.

Bellinger wins it for Dodgers ends season for Giants 2-1

By Jeremy Kahn

SAN FRANCISCO-Of the series between the two best teams in Major League Baseball in 2021 came down the final at-bat and it was the Los Angeles Dodgers standing in the end.

Cody Bellinger hit a seeing eye single in the top of the ninth inning that scored Justin Turner from second base, helping the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants in Game Five of the National League Division Series before a crowd of 42,275 at Oracle Park.

I actually did think he had a fastball and I thought the slider was and Bellinger was not able to get underneath it until that one swing, said Giants manager Gabe Kapler.

The Bellinger single gave the Dodgers the lead for good and Game Three starter Max Scherzer came on to close it out for the Dodgers, who move on to their second NLCS appearance and their fifth appearance in the last six years.

Scherzer did run into some trouble in the bottom of the ninth inning, as after he got Brandon Crawford to fly out to Chris Taylor in right field, Turner committed a fielding error at third base that allowed Kris Bryant reach first base that brought LaMonte Wade, Jr., who became the late inning hero for the Giants during the season; however, Wade, Jr., was unable to be the hero, when he struck out for the second out of the inning and then Scherzer got Wilmer Flores on a check swing to end the game, the series and the season for the Giants.

It looked like he did not go. I mean that was my take on it, said Kapler.

Turner reached with one out in the inning after he was hit on the shoulder on a pitch thrown by losing pitcher Camilo Doval, who then gave up a single to Gavin Lux and then Bellinger singled to right field to score Turner with the series winning run for the defending World Champion Dodgers, who will face the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS beginning on Saturday night at Truist Park in Atlanta. This will be the second year in a row that the Dodgers and the Braves will face each other in the NLCS, last season, the Dodgers came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the NLCS in seven games.

The Dodgers finally got to Logan Webb in the top of the sixth inning, Corey Seager hit a flare down the left field line for a double, that scored Mookie Betts from second base to break up the scoreless tie.

Betts was the star of the game for the Dodgers, as he went four-for-four at the plate, including a double in the top of the sixth inning that came right before Seager dropped the double down the left field line that gave the Dodgers the lead for a short period of time.

The four hits by Betts were a postseason career high.

He is one of the best players in baseball for a reason. He is a pretty incredible player and pretty incredible guy, honestly, said Logan Webb.

Darin Ruf tied up the game with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the sixth inning, as he launched a solo home run over the center field wall. It was the first career post season home run for Ruf.

Julio Urias, who pitched a masterpiece on Saturday in the 9-2 win by the Dodgers gave up the home run to Ruf. Urias, who went five innings on Saturday night, as he allowed one run on three hits, walking one, striking out five and threw 72 pitches looked unhittable until Ruf unloaded on the 3-2 pitch that tied up the game.

In all, Urias went four innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking no one and striking out five on four days rest.

Webb, who struck out 10 in the Game One victory for the Giants, came back to throw seven innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking one and striking out seven in his second career postseason career start.

I felt good. Everything was moving the way I wanted to, and yeah it was good. Buster caught a great game, said Webb.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who originally stated that he was going to start Urias instead started Corey Knebel, who pitched the first inning, where he allowed just a double to Buster Posey and nothing else before turning the ball over to the bullpen.

Brusdar Graterol then came up on to replace Knebel, as he also went one inning, allowing two hits and was able to strand two runners on base, when he struck out Webb to end the threat and the inning.

Tyler Rogers came on to replace Webb in the top of the eighth inning, and he got into a jam after he led off the inning by getting Taylor to fly out to Bryant in center field, but then A.J. Pollock came off the bench to pinch hit for Blake Treinen and reached on an infield single that went off the glove of Wilmer Flores.

Betts then came up with his fourth hit of the game to put runners on first and second with one out, but then Rogers struck out Seager for the second out of the inning and that was end of the night for Rogers, who was replaced by Camilo Doval, who on one pitch got Trea Turner to fly out to Austin Slater in right field to get out of the inning and the jam.

NOTES: This was the 27th postseason appearance for the Giants and the 13th since they moved to California in 1958, and it was the first time that the Giants and Dodgers ever faced off versus each other in the postseason.

Kapler is the fifth consecutive Giants manager to lead his team to the postseason, joining Roger Craig (1987, 1989), Dusty Baker (1997, 2000 and 2002), Felipe Alou (2003), Bruce Bochy (2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016) and Kapler (2021).

UP NEXT: The season is over for the Giants, who will meet up again in Spring Training in February of 2022 at Scottsdale Stadium in Scottsdale, Arizona.

On the other hand, the Dodgers will head to Atlanta, where they will face the Braves beginning on Saturday night in the NLCS.

This is the 15th trip to the NLCS for the Dodgers, breaking the tie with the St. Louis Cardinals for the most trips to the NLCS since divisional play began in 1969.

The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Thursday night playing in their last preseason game of 2021. The Kings were undefeated coming into the game having beat the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers, and Portland Trailblazers. Coming into town on Thursday was the Los Angeles Lakers. LeBron James was set to play in the final tuneup before the season. Tip off was set for 7 PM PST. However before we dive into the action let’s bring you up to speed on the last game.

Flashback Monday: On Monday the Kings continued their undefeated preseason by beating the Portland Trailblazers by the final of 107-93. The Kings were led in the game by impressive play from Davion Mitchell who scored 20 points.

Thursday night recap: Tip off was set in Sacramento at 7 PM PST against the Lakers.

In the first quarter, the Kings dominated the Lakers. The Kings out up an offensive outbursts of 35 points against an older Lakers defense. The Lakers, managed to put up only 23 points against the Kings as the Kings improved defense took center stage. Harrison Barnes led the Kings with eight first quarter points.

In the second quarter, the Kings didn’t fare as well. The Lakers managed to outscore the Kings 42-36 in the second quarter. The Kings offense remained in high gear, but the defense slipped as the Lakers put up a massive number. The game would go into halftime with the Kings leading 71-66. LeBron James led the Lakers in the first half with 19 points as Harrison Barnes led the Kings by scoring 15. The Kings would hope to contain the Lakers in the second half to remain undefeated in preseason.

In the third quarter, both teams cooled down. The Lakers outscored the Kings by one point scoring 22 points. The Kings only managed 21 points as the offense slowed. The Kings would maintain a lead going into the fourth quarter 92-87. The question was if they could hold the lead against the Lakers.

In the fourth quarter, both teams traded buckets. The Kings were once again outscored but only 25-24 as the Kings would hold on and go undefeated in the preseason. The Kings played a promising final game however the defense faltered late. The Kings will look to tighten that up in practice before the start of the season. The Kings were led in victory by De’Aaron Fox who scored 21 points. The Lakers were led by none other than LeBron James who scored 30 points.

Up Next: The Kings will begin the regular season on Wednesday, October 20th against the Portland Trailblazers in Portland at 7 PM PST.

National Fallout League: NFL Calls for Widespread Investigation

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Bomani Jones radio talk show host had NFLPA Chief DeMaurice Smith on his show and discussed the Gruden emails at length. (CNN file photo)

Just days after Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden resigned, the NFL is now opening up a big investigation. DeMaurice Smith Chief of the NFLPA (players association) wonders whether racial bias is included in messages and he is curious about what else is in the many emails that were gathered as part of the league’s investigation into the Washington Football Team. During an appearance on ESPN this Wednesday “The Right Time with Bomani Jones” podcast he wonders whether there is evidence that hiring decisions were made depending a candidate’s skin color.

Rich Bisaccia, Raiders special teams coordinator was named the interim coach for the team and when asked on Wednesday about the situation that caused Jon Gruden to resign as coach: “The Raiders have always stood for diversity, inclusion, social justice. It’s important to live those ideals and carry them into the future. We cannot change the past, but we can do more to maybe make tomorrow better.”

But now, ‘the cat is out of the bag’ and all all-of-a-sudden the NFL is opening an investigation to dig deeper into this issue.
