That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: A’s Port of Oakland buildings, railroad and gondola

No word yet on the Oakland A’s Howard Terminal ball park but baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred is losing patience (artists rendition of Oakland A’s Howard Terminal ballpark image from Piedmont Exedra)

A’s- Port Of Oakland, Buildings, Railroad and Gondola.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Amaury Pi-González

Recently commissioner of Major League Baseball Rob Manfred said he is not optimistic about a new deal to keep the team in A’s in Oakland. He made the remarks to the Sports Business Journal and confirmed relocation is on the table for the A’s but not only to Las Vegas but as well to other locations in other cities.

Manfred said that Tampa Bay Rays and the Oakland A’s need new ballparks, but reiterated (as he has done in the past) that Oakland is the team right now that concerns him the most. Manfred said (quote) “Frankly, in some ways we’re not sure we see a path to success, in terms of getting something built in Oakland.”

The commissioner is following the situation in Oakland and could be worried about the points listed below, that seems to be on the table between both parties.

Below deals with some of these topics.

-Port of Oakland. How can the ballpark affect the Port of Oakland operations? Concerns that the port needs to expand to accommodate large cargo ships. That this would be more difficult with a baseball stadium at Howard Terminal. Port of Oakland workers have demonstrated in front of the A’s team owner John Fisher in San Francisco as they are against the proposal to build the new stadium at Howard Terminal. Workers say that will displace blue collar jobs.

-Buildings. The Athletics plan calls for Howard Terminal to build one (1) residential tower as high as 600 feet and another at 400 feet tall. These buildings would compete with designs such as the Ordway building, which is 400 feet tall and the tallest building in downtown Oakland. Ordway building is also known as #1 Kaiser Plaza.

-Railroad. The DRC (Oakland Design Review Committee) wants a safe way for the visitors to the park to avoid the railroad tracks altogether. The DRC is concerned with the safety of people to get to the park across the railroad crossings. AMTRAK trains travels right in front of Jack London Square. Note. Union Pacific controls the rails.

-Gondola. In 2019 the Oakland A’s proposed the idea of a gondola to take fans from BART to Howard Terminal. However, this idea was not in the plans and reviewed by the committee. The proposal was to move fans from downtown Oakland to a stadium at Howard Terminal. The fans would be “ferried” via an elevated gondola similar to what you might see at a ski resort to the stadium. Looks like the gondola is a No Go.

Above are some of the key points to be discussed by the Alameda Board of Supervisors this October 26. As of today the official agenda for the meeting still pending and has not been announced to the public.

It seems that Commissioner Rob Manfred, who has put a clock in baseball to ‘speed up’ the game, has also put the A’s on the clock when it comes to the new Howard Terminal ballpark.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Dodgers on the brink of elimination; Can Raiders new coach put Gruden in review mirrior?; plus more

The Atlanta Braves Eddie Rosario is mobbed after swinging for the game winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning in game 2 of the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sun Oct 17, 2021 at Turist Field in Cobb County GA (AP News photo)

On That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary:

#1 Amaury, how hard, how unbelievable is it that the Los Angeles Dodgers (0-2) are down in the first two games of the NLCS to the Atlanta Braves (2-0). In both loses the Dodgers have lost by a run and on walks off hits.

#2 Talk about Kyle Schwarber of the Boston Red Sox parked one in the Fenway Park bleachers for a grand slam homer in the bottom of the second inning off Houston Astros starter Jose Urquidy. The Red Sox have been somewhat the surprise team in the post season they win game 12-3 and now are in front of the Astros 2-1.

#3 Turning to football, Las Vegas Raiders interim head coach Rich Bisaccia got off to a good start with a convincing 34-24 win over the Denver Broncos last Sunday at Empower Stadium to improve the Raiders record to 4-2 it had to take off some of the pressure on the Raiders after the Jon Gruden debacle.

#4 Turning to Pac 12 football Washington State Cougars head coach Nick Rolovich was fired by the university for refusing to take a Covid-19 vaccination shot. Some of the Cougars assistant coaches also were let go as they too refused to get vaccinated. Washington State employees are required to take the Covid-19 shot failure resulted in their termination.

#5 In the NHL the San Jose Sharks got their first victory on opening night at SAP Center over the visiting Winnipeg Jets as the Sharks embark on this current five game road trip they will come back for to San Jose face Montreal on Thu 28 and Winnipeg on Sat 30th. Amaury I know you have the 30th circled a big day for the Sharks as they will broadcast their first Spanish televised game that night with play by play announcer Jesus Zarate and yourself with color analysis.

#1 Barbara taking a look at the Golden State Warriors roster for the 2021-22 season the total cost on just players was $334 million.

#2 Barbara in the final pre season game Stephen Curry showed off his handy work scoring 41 points looks like he’s picked up where he left off from last season.

#3 The Warriors have rolled to a perfect record in pre season play, was this by design that other teams didn’t want to show their strengths before the regular season starts or the Warriors are really that good.

#4 Andrew Wiggins sat because of a knee injury and head coach Steve Kerr that Wiggins is not quite where he wants to be that kept him out for a couple days worth of practice.

#5 The Los Angeles Lakers did not win one pre season game going 0-5 was this a matter of the Lakers not wanting show all their cards toward the regular season or is there something to worry about as they will host the Warriors at Staples Center on Tuesday night’s opener.

San Jose Barracuda podcast with Marko Ukalovic: Cuda go all out but just couldn’t score in opening day loss

The Bakersfield Condors Seth Griffith scored the game’s only goal in the second period on Sun Oct 17, 2021 at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield against the visiting San Jose Barracuda. Here is Griffith in a file photo taking a shot against the San Diego Gulls from a previous game (Bakersfield.com file photo)

On the Barracuda podcast with Marko:

#1 Season opener was rough for the SJ Barracuda who went all out but just couldn’t get any offense going and the Bakersfield Condors goalie Stuart Skinner was in front of the net and stopped all of the Barracuda’s 34 shots on net for naught in a 1-0 loss.

#2 Not the way the Barracuda wanted to open the season but Barracuda goaltender Alexi Melnichuk stopped 14 of 15 shots but unfortunately that one goal allowed accounted towards Melnichuk’s first loss of the season.

#3 For Melinchuk it was the third time in his career that he allowed only one goal and looked good on defense Sunday despite the loss.

#4 The Condors Seth Griffith scored the game’s only goal it was on a second period power play for Griffith he now has four points in two games for this season and is working quickly on offense.

#5 The Barracuda will face off against the Colorado Eagles next Fri Oct 22 at Loveland it will be the Barracuda’s second of three consecutive road games.

Condors shutout Barracuda 1-0 in season opener

The San Jose Barracuda cut it close at Mechanics Bank Arena the home of the Bakersfield Condors on Sun 10-17-21 in Bakersfield with a 1-0 win. (sjbarracuda.com photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Ownage is ownage for Stuart Skinner.

The Bakersfield Condors goalie continued his dominance over the San Jose Barracuda with 34 saves in a 1-0 shutout victory in the ‘Cuda’s season opener of the 2021-22 season on Sunday evening at the Mechanics Bank Arena.

Skinner was the difference as the ‘Cuda peppered him with shots throughout the entire game yet they left the building they haven’t been able to win at for two plus season.

The opening 20 minutes was scoreless as San Jose outshot Bakersfield 12-9 as they dictated the pace of play for the majority of the period..

The first period was highlighted by the fisticuffs of Zachary Gallant and Dino Kambeitz as both had a spirited fight at the 12:33 mark.

The second period featured the Barracuda dominating the first 12 minutes. They outshot the Condors 8-1 at one point but could not get a puck past Condors goalie Stuart Skinner, who kept his team in the game by stopping all 11 shots he faced in the period.

San Jose (0-1) went into the sinbin one too many times in the middle frame. They had three minor penalties in the period.

Third time was a charm for Bakersfield (2-0) on the power play as they broke the ice late in the period. Adam Cracknell sent a cross ice pass over to Seth Griffith in the right slot. Griffith fired a wrist shot through a screened ‘Cuda goalie Alexei Melnichuk for his first shot of the season at the 17:21 mark.

It was only the second shot in the period for the Condors but they made it count when they needed it to.

San Jose opened the third period on the power play but it only lasted 19 seconds when Sasha Chmelevski was called for tripping resulting in four-on-four play.

The power play was the ‘Cuda’s own worst enemy. They weren’t able to capitalize on the five chances they had in the game. It looks like it’s going to be a work in progress to in the early going as the players get familiar with each other.

Skinner deserves the credit as he was the Condors best penalty killer on the night. He completed the shutout despite San Jose having an extra attacker for the final 1:17 when they pulled Melnichuk in attempt to try to score the equalizer.

Melnichuk had a light night in terms of shots. He stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 0-for-5 on the power play. Bakersfield was 1-for-5.

San Jose was without last season’s leading goal scorer Joachim Blichfeld as he was out with a lower body injury.

UP NEXT: The Barracuda continue its three-game road trip as the take on the Colorado Eagles on Friday 10/22 at the 6:05pm at the Budweiser Events Center.

Raiders come out energized shut down Broncos 34-24; Bisaccia gets first win as Raiders head coach

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Rich Bisaccia greets Denver Broncos fans at Empower Field in Denver just before game time on Sun Oct 17, 2021 Bisaccia’s first game as head coach for the Raiders since Jon Gruden’s resignation.

Raiders come out energized shut down Broncos 34-24.

By Rich Perez

Las Vegas Raiders beat writer

The Las Vegas Raiders (4-2) came out truly inspired today and beat the Denver Broncos (3-3) 34-24 in a game that really was never close at all at Empower Field Stadium in Denver on Sunday. David Carr started the scoring with Henry Ruggs to make it seven nothing very quickly in the opening drive. Teddy Bridgewater came right back and scored for the Broncos to tie the game but… it was never close right after that, as the defense took over for the Raiders.

The Broncos attempted a fourth quarter come back if you can call it that down 31-10 at 11:16 Bridgewater threw for a 12 yard pass to receiver Courtland Sutter. Denver cut the lead to 31-17. At 7:57 Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson booted a 30 yard field goal to make it 34-17. The Broncos last score of the afternoon at the final 1:12 when quarterback Noah Fant caught a Bridgewater four yard pass for the Broncos ten point win.

The Las Vegas defensive line dominated today as Broncos QB Teddy Bridgewater struggled all day from pressure out on him all game long. Primarily from Max Crosby. The Raiders looked inspired to play well for the new coach and to show the world that they were focused once again on winning football games. Bridgewater threw 35-49 for 334 yards, three touchdowns and was picked off three times.

Carr threw 18-27, 341 yards, and two touchdowns. Josh Jacobs and Kenyan Drake both carried for a touchdown for the Raiders. The Raiders scored ten in the second quarter and 14 in the third quarter for the bulk of their offense. This being Raiders head coach Rich Bisaccia’s first game at the helm since the resignation of Jon Gruden said things flowed well on the way to his first Raiders victory as head coach “The best part for me was to get on the grass,” Bisaccia said. “The worst part for me was figuring out the headset. Once you get on the field and the game goes, a lot of our responsibilities were the same. There was really good dialogue” with his coordinators.”

Next week the Raiders take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Las Vegas in what should be an interesting game against the up-and-coming team lead by QB Jalen Hurts.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: Will 49ers shop Garoppolo or will they hang onto him as Lance isn’t ready?

San Francisco 49er quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo who did not play in the 49ers last game on Sun Oct 10, 2021 in Glendale against the Arizona Cardinals is seen on the field at State Farm Stadium before the game (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 The 49ers who are on a bye week this Sunday and have lost three in a row and three games out of first place in the NFC West and have two injured quarterbacks have a lot to recover from going into next week’s home game against the Indianapolis Colts.

#2 On quarterbacks injuries Jimmy Garoppolo left calf soreness and Trey Lance twisted left knee will they get enough recovery time to get a start for next week’s game against the Colts.

#3 Garoppolo who missed week 5 and ranks 18th in passing in the NFL is he going to be commodity of sorts as the 49ers are rumored to be interested in shopping him or will they hang onto him because Lance isn’t ready yet?

#4 Lance who carried during the last game against in Arizona and got injured running the ball and head coach Kyle Shanahan and said one of many times that Lance isn’t quite ready yet to step into the starting role. Lance was 15-29, 192 yards, carried for 92 yards and threw for one touchdown.

#5 The 49ers are 17th place in total defense and place 11th in rushing and it’s unlikely that they will not not move up the scale to Super Bowl caliber numbers over their next 12 games anytime soon as the 49ers injuries of DeForest Buckner and Raheem Mostert are just too hard to replace at this juncture.

Washington State edges Stanford 34-31; Cougars get fifth straight win against Cardinal

Washington State Edges Stanford 34-31

By Barbara Mason

Saturday afternoon the Stanford Cardinal (3-4) took on Washington State Cougars (4-3) at Washington State in Pullman. With two similar records to start the game WSU faces a team that has celebrated two upsets this season. The first against USC by the score of 42-28 and the second a stunning win over 9th ranked Oregon 31-24 in overtime. WSU has won it’s last four games against Stanford which included a 49-22 victory the last time they met. WSU continued their winning way with it’s fifth straight win 34-31 in a comeback on Saturday.

WSU has two of the best receivers in the Pac-12, Calvin Jackson Jr. and Travell Harris. These two players rank third and fourth in the conference. Stanford will have to keep both of these players under wraps. The Cardinal defense will have their hands full containing WSU quarterback Jayden de Laura who has been having a banner year.

Stanford came out strong in the first quarter. Quarterback Tanner McKee threw for a 45 yard touchdown to Benjamin Yoroek. Stanford would add a couple of field goals; a 45 yard and 32 yard strike to lead 13-0 at the end of the quarter.

WSU would come roaring back as Jayden de Laura threw three touchdowns in the second quarter. Travell Harris had the first touchdown, a 32 yard pass. De Laura would hit Calvin Jackson Jr. for 31 yards and the third for ten yards to De’Zhaun Stribling. WSU led by the score of 20-13. The Cardinal would block the PAT on the second touchdown. Stanford would kick a 31 yard field goal as the half came to an end. At the half the score was 20-16 in favor of WSU.

WSU had the ball to open the second half. The Stanford defense was able to hold and put the ball back into the hands of their offense. Penalties hurt Stanford on their first drive of the third quarter putting WSU back into the drivers seat. De Laura went right to work driving downfield culminating in a six play drive for 66 yards and their fourth touchdown of the game. The Cougars had extended their lead to 27-16. Stopping De Laura was proving a major challenge for the Stanford defense.

A pass interference called on WSU coupled with some nice play by McKee was huge for Stanford setting them up with a first and goal on the WSU one yard line as the third quarter came to an end.

Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee would rush for the touchdown. The two point conversion was successful and Stanford trailed by a field goal 27-24. McKee was not finished. On Stanford’s next drive he would complete an 8 yard pass to Austin Jones for a touchdown taking the lead 31-27 with 3:42 left in the game. The WSU offense had really cooled letting Stanford back into this game.

Jayden de Laura got back on track in the latter minutes of the fourth quarter and moved his team downfield. Max Borghi rushed for a two yard touchdown giving WSU the lead and the win 34-31. The small window that Stanford had closed completely when McKee fumbled and WSU recovered with 1:30 left on the clock.

It was almost a great finish for the Cardinal but they just could not hold the Cougars at the end.

Next up for Stanford will be the Washington Huskies on Saturday October 30 at Stanford Stadium. The time for kickoff is TBD.
