That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Ray Fosse had a hard work ethic; he worked until he had to be carried out of the booth

Former Oakland A’s catcher and broadcaster Ray Fosse takes a seat at the Oakland Coliseum played in the big leagues from 1967 to 1979 and broadcasted the A’s from 1986 to 2021 before passing away Wed Oct 13, 2021 (TSN file photo)

On That’s Amaury’s podcast:

There is very little doubt about the player, broadcaster and great human being that Ray Fosse 74 was he grinded it out as a player and he did the same as a broadcaster up until his very last game that he called. Fosse who passed away on Wednesday was the A’s catcher who called and caught many historic games in his baseball career which included the A’s World Champion teams in 1973 and 1974.

Fosse’s baseball career spans from 1967-1972 with Cleveland, 1973-1975 Oakland, Cleveland 1976-1977, Seattle (1977) and finished his career in Milwaukee (1979). Fosse is most famously remembered for catching and dropping the ball in the 1970 All Star game when Cincinnati Reds and National Leaguer Pete Rose collided with Fosse at home to score the winning run. Fosse is in the top 100 players in the history of Cleveland Guardians history.

Fosse worked as an Oakland A’s broadcaster in both radio and TV from 1986 to 2021. Fosse on his last day of broadcasting at the A’s had to leave by medical assistance that’s how gritty he was he worked even when he was sick and no one knew he had cancer for 16 years. His radio broadcast colleague Ken Korach said “We never knew how bad it was and he was still working, it was incredible that he was working right up until this summer”

On the Raiders podcast with Tony R:

#2 For the players what’s your read on their reaction and how they approach Sunday’s game in Denver with interim head coach Rich Bisaccia as you said on Tuesday most likely they’ll still hold onto the Gruden playbook.

#3 This all went down pretty quick do you see sudden adjustments being made and what will be the make up the team mentally without Gruden around.

#4 Coach Bisaccia is someone these players and the organization will be looking up to for leadership and someone to pull them through what the Raiders call a sad and disappointing end to the Gruden era.

#5 The Denver Broncos (3-2) took a tough loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers (2-3) 27-19 last Sunday at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. Broncos quarterback Teddy Bridgewater threw for 24-38, 288 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. How do you see the Raiders matching up against the Broncos in this one at Mile High in Denver.

Where could A’s move to if Howard Terminal fails?

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred spoke on Tuesday regarding the future of the Oakland A’s and Tampa Bay Rays who are in need of brand new stadiums and where they could move to if they don’t get them in Oakland or Tampa Bay (ABC 7 News file photo)

By Charlie O

Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred was in New York on Tuesday and was speaking and attending the CAA World Congress of Sports. He was asked about the stadium plans for Oakland and Tampa Bay that was provided via video by the Sports Business Journal.

Manfred admitted that the stadiums plans are at the critical point saying the Oakland Coliseum is in such poor condition, “particularly in the case of Oakland” Manfred said “we’ve had to open up the opportunity to explore other locations, just because it’s dragged on so long”

What are some of those locations? Manfred and Oakland A’s team president David Kaval have only explored Las Vegas and Kaval himself has made several trips to the Vegas South Nevada greater area looking at places just outside of Vegas like Henderson and mostly Summerlin home of the A’s triple A team the Aviators.

The list goes on of cities who want a MLB team either the Tampa Bay Rays who just were eliminated in the ALDS playoffs and the Oakland A’s who had a competitive season chasing the first place Houston Astros but failed to make post season.

Amongst those cities: New Orleans, Montreal, Indianapolis, Portland, Orlando, Nashville or Las Vegas. The list actually has more cities but these are the top places mentioned but Vegas being the most serious amongst those. What works against Vegas is that the community is “stadiumed out” having new stadiums for the Vegas Golden Knights, Las Vegas Aces, and the Las Vegas Raiders not to mention UNLV basketball. Also Las Vegas is the 39th ranked TV market in the country and Oakland is in the sixth largest TV market.

The city of Las Vegas will grow from a non big league market to a four team pro market with their top college basketball team UNLV. Nothing officially decided yet but word is to no ones surprise Vegas is the front runner for getting the A’s.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff said that nothing has changed and that it’s been frustrating getting the Howard Terminal agreement to get signed and agreed upon, “The commissioner remains very frustrated and impatient as am I about the progress toward locking down the Howard Terminal project.”

Schaff said that the next big move is when the Alameda County Board of Supervisors meet on Oct 26th to vote on using tax district dollars that would pay for the project and would help construct the surrounding infrastructure. Schaff said that the commissioner wants a total commitment for the developing and financing of affordable housing and public parks to make this a complete success and going forward with making the new A’s park a success.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Jon Gruden Selective Outrage

ESPN’s Stephen A Smith who said Los Angeles Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani should not be the face of baseball because he can’t speak English and needs an interpreter but later apologized for the remarks (photo file GQ)

Jon Gruden: Selective Outrage

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Amaury Pi-González

Jon Gruden resigned as coach of the Las Vegas Raiders just hours after the New York Times detailed emails in which he had made homophobic and misogynistic remarks, after an earlier report of racist statements. “I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone” was part of his statement announcing his resignation. Aside from the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal reported that Gruden used a racist term to describe DeMaurice Smith the NFL Union in Chief in 2011 to Washington Football team executive Bruce Allen.

The coach was in the fourth year of this 10-year contract for $100 million that he signed with the Oakland Raiders in 2018. After two of the most prestigious newspapers in the country broke the news, Jon Gruden had little choice but to resign and in doing so, he made the right decision.

We seem to have Selective Outrage in this country when it comes to reveal what somebody said or did say years ago. This July ESPN Sportscaster Stephen A. Smith said on social media that baseball player Shohei Ohtani’s use of an English interpreter “contributes to harming the game to some degree” and added- “The fact that you got a foreign player that doesn’t speak English, believe it or not, I think contributes to harming the game to some degree, when that’s your box office appeal,” Smith said during the July 10 episode of First Take. Othani has become the face of baseball and Mr.Smith believed that he should not.

He apologized but never resigned from his job. Considering the violence against Asians at the time of his remarks about Othani (a Japanese born citizen) that could easily be considered racism. It is only common sense. But let’s face it, if you experienced discrimination and or racism, you know it, and do not need a Diversity and Inclusion Degree to “know it”. Trust me on this one.

But it happens today in all walks of life, not only in the world of sports. We live in a Woke culture that selects whom they pick on and who they “let go” or “look the other way”, because we all know that media sources have their own bias.

That is very dangerous and in many ways hypocritical by most standards. In 2019 Virginia Governor Ralph Northam admitted (after various media outlets revealed) he was in a racist yearbook showing one person dressed in blackface and another in the typical KKK’s white hood and robes.

A photograph appears in the 1984 yearbook for Eastern Virginia Medical School. Many believe he was the man in black face. Although the Governor apologized, Northam did not say whether he was wearing the KKK outfit or blackface. To this day, he still the Governor of the State of Virginia.

We can make an argument that a Governor of a State is a much more important position and should have a higher moral standard because he represents the millions of people that live in his State and he/she gets paid by the taxpayers, regardless of political party affiliation. An athlete or a coach or a man that gets paid to make sports commentary, has not such responsibility.

The above are three separate incidents, where actions got the participant in trouble. However, only one lost their job, while the other two have been able to continue with their careers. What is wrong with this picture? There seems to be a double standard in life. We all need to remember, treat people like you want to be treated.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: With Garoppolo and Lance hurt bye week couldn’t have come at a better time

It was just that kind of a game for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance who ducked, dodged, and squirmed his way in a very physical game against the Arizona Cardinals Sun Oct 10, 2021 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. The 49ers have a bye this Sun Oct 17, 2021 (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 Dave one thing you can say about San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance’s first full game the Arizona Cardinals didn’t waste anytime initiating him with a series of hits in many of his 16 runs, was sacked twice, and hit five times while he was trying to throw in the pocket last Sunday.

#2 Lance has a twisted left knee and will rest during this week’s bye week which couldn’t have come at a better time.

#3 Come by Oct 24 is there is a possibility for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to return he has that sore calf and it could be possible that both quarterbacks could be feeling better.

Warriors beat LA for a second time 111-99

Not even the Los Angeles Lakers King James, LeBron James could stop the Golden State Warriors here he attempts to add to the score with a leaping shot over a crowd of defenders at Staples Center in Los Angeles (AP News photo)

Warriors Beat L.A. For A Second Time

By Barbara Mason

With the regular season right around the corner, the Warriors took on the Lakers for a second time, the first one at Chase Center, a winning effort on Friday, and tonight at Staples.

LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis and Carmelo Anthony all saw action in the first half while Steph Curry and Draymond Greene did not.

The Warriors trailed after the first quarter by the score of 32-24. They made up a lot of ground in the second quarter and trailed by a couple at halftime 55-53. Damion Lee had 12 points in the half and Gary Payton II had 8 off he bench. The Warriors were really challenged by the Laker starters and were more than able to handle it.

The Lakers jumped out to a healthy led in the third quarter but the Warriors were able to hold them off and outscored Los Angeles in the quarter 32-29. After three quarters the Warriors led by a single point 85-84.

The fourth quarter saw both teams play their benches. The Lakers Chaundee Brown had 10 points off the bench and the Warriors Otto Porter Jr. had 16 off the bench. The Warriors outscored the Lakers in the fourth quarter 26-15. The final was 111-99 in favor of the Warriors.

Golden State will take on the Portland Trail Blazers to finish up the pre-season this Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Dodgers stave off elimination with big victory 7-2; LA forces game 5 at Oracle Thursday

Bottom of the fourth inning the Los Angeles Dodgers cracks a bottom of the fourth inning home run against the San Francisco Giants on Tue Oct 12, 2021 at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles (AP News photo)

By Jeremy Kahn

If you thought that the reigning World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers would go away quietly into the off-season, you were wrong.

Anthony DeSclafani lasted just 1.1 innings, and Mookie Betts hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Dodgers forced a decisive Game Five in the National League Division with a 7-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium.

Gabe Kapler saw enough from his starter just 28 pitches and the Dodgers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against the Giants, who were trying to close out the series and move on to the National League Championship Series against the Atlanta Braves, who closed out the Milwaukee Brewers after Freddie Freeman hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, helping the Braves to a 5-4 victory at Truist Park in Atlanta.

DeSclafani gave up a run-scoring double that scored Corey Seager in the bottom of the first inning, and then Chris Taylor just missed a home run in the bottom of the second inning, as his sacrifice fly was caught by LaMonte Wade, Jr., that scored Gavin Lux, who just missed tying up the game in the bottom of the ninth inning on a fly ball that was caught by Steven Duggar on the warning track that gave the Giants a 1-0 victory and a 2-1 lead over the Dodgers in the NLDS.

In that 1.2 innings of work, DeSclafani allowed two runs on five hits, did not allow a walk and struck out two in his post season debut for the Giants.

Walker Buehler, who lost Game 1 to the Giants on Friday night at Oracle Park went just 4.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits, walked two and struck out four and did not fare in the decision.

Betts hit a two-run home run off of Jarlin Garcia, just after Buehler reached on a fielding error by Garcia.

The Giants scored their lone run in the top of the fifth inning, when Darin Ruf grounded out to Trea Turner that allowed Game Four hero Evan Longoria to score easily from third base.

With a chance to tie up the game, Brandon Crawford, who came up with one of the biggest defensive play of the win on Monday night grounded out to Justin Turner to end the inning and the threat for the Giants.

Joe Kelly, who came on to replace Buehler in the top of the fifth inning, picked up the win for the Dodgers, as he went 0.2 innings, allowing one hit and the rest zeros before turning the game over to Brusdar Graterol, Anthony Vesia, Blake Treinen and then Phil Bickford and the Dodgers forced the decisive Game Five on Thursday night at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

Betts drove in his second run of the night in the bottom of the fifth inning, as he hit a sacrifice fly off of Tyler Rogers that scored Cody Bellinger from third base with the bases loaded.

It was in that fifth inning, that the Dodgers basically put the game away, as Lux walked, then went to third on a Bellinger hit-and-run single thru the middle of the infield. Chris Taylor, who sent the Dodgers into the Division Series against the Giants after he hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning off of Anthony Reyes to give the Dodgers a dramatic 3-1 victory on Wednesday night hit into a force play that saw Leone throw to Longoria, who threw to Buster Posey, who tagged out Lux for the first out for the first out of the inning.

After Steven Souza walked to load the bases, Betts hit a sacrifice fly to Kris Bryant in left field to score Bellinger. Rogers then got Seager to fly out to Mike Yastrzemski to end the inning.

The Giants cut the lead down to 5-2 in the top of the eighth inning, when Crawford led off the inning with a double to the base of the right field wall off of Treinen. Posey then sent to his longtime teammate to third, when he grounded out to Trea Turner, and then Bryant grounded out to Justin Turner to score Crawford and down to his last position player, Kapler called on Curt Casali, who struck out to end the inning.

Will Smith put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth inning, when he hit a two-run home run off of Jake McGee with one out in the inning. Seager led off the inning with a single, then after a fly out by Trea Turner for the first out of the inning, Smith launched the two-run home run into the bleachers.

NOTES: When the Giants took Game Three by the final score of 1-0 on Monday night, it was the 15th time in postseason history that a game ended with a score of 1-0, with the lone run being scored on a solo home run. Greg Bird of the New York Yankees was last player to accomplish the feat in the 2017 American League Division Series against the Cleveland Indians.

This was the second time in Giants that this occurred, and the first time since October 12, 1923, when Casey Stengel hit a solo home run to give the Giants a 1-0 win over the New York Yankees in the World Series.

With the shutout on Monday night, it was the 27th shutout in Giants postseason history, the second most in MLB history, trailing the Yankees, who have 32 shutouts in postseason history. Of those 27 shutouts, Posey has caught 14 of the 27 shutouts, the most by a catcher in MLB postseason history.

UP NEXT: Logan Webb will take the mound on Thursday night for the Giants, as they look for their first appearance in the National League Championship Series since 2014, while the Dodgers will send Julio Urias to the mound, as they look for their second consecutive appearance in the NLCS and their fifth appearance in six years.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Red Sox wait for Astros or White Sox; Braves on the brink; Giants coming off some miracle pitching need one more

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora (left) is Amaury’s pick for the 2021 Manager of the Year Award here he has a laugh with bench coach Tim Hyers (right) during game 3 of the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays Sat Oct 9, 2021 at Fenway Park in Boston (AP News photo)

On That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary:

#1 The Boston Red Sox who have had their share of walk off wins now wait for their next opponent after getting a ninth inning walk off in their game four victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. The Red Sox will face either the Houston Astros or the Chicago White Sox.

#2 The Houston Astros who have a 2-1 ALDS series lead over the Chicago White Sox tonight at Guarantee Rate Field in Chicago need one more to advance to the ALCS and face the Boston Red Sox. But not before battling with Tony LaRussa’s White Sox. Chicago knows they have their backs to the wall against a very well prepared Dusty Baker’s Houston Astros.

#3 The Atlanta Braves have had just nothing short of great pitching in their last two games against the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS. The Braves got two back to back shutouts by scores of 3-0 to take a 2-1 lead in the series after the Brewers took game 1. The Brewers will be starting Eric Lauer a left hander against the Braves Charlie Morton in game five today at Trusit Park in Cobb County.

#4 The San Francisco Giants got their wins on shutouts against the Los Angeles Dodgers mighty line up. The Dodgers are without Max Muncy and Clayton Kershaw during this NLDS did that handicap them? The Dodgers got an offensive outburst in game 2 with a 9-2 win against Giants starter Kevin Gausman. The Giants got shutouts out of pitchers Logan Webb and Alex Webb in games 1 and 2 but really depend on starter Anthony DeScafani who matches up against the Dodgers Tony Gonsolin in game four tonight at Dodgers Stadium.
