San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca: How Covid issues will effect Giants-Padres series

San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler (left) and team general manager Scott Harris right gets word that a player on the club had tested positive for Covid-19 and Friday’s game was canceled. They would later learn Saturday’s game was a scratch too. (AP News photo)

On the Giants podcast with Michael:

#1 One thought that was brought up after the game was canceled on Friday was how in hindsight what catcher Buster Posey who took the season off was out of caution and was it a good idea to even have a season knowing the risks?

#2 An unnamed Giants player was tested positive and you can imagine anyone in the traveling party has to be concerned no doubt testing and self quarantine in the Giants San Diego hotel was in effect.

#3 Yesterday and today’s games were canceled and Sunday’s game is in doubt if canceled the Giants are scheduled to go to Seattle is that series in doubt?

#4 The Oakland A’s when they were in Houston had found that pitcher Daniel Mengden came up positive and games were canceled on that trip and the A’s were forced to scratch their trip to Seattle. For the Giants right now they’ll have to test and see if they get a clean bill of health before moving forward?

#5 Tell us your feelings about the time you got to spend over the years with recently re-assigned Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval who had been part of three World Series Championships and what did he mean to the Giants organization?

SAFEWAY OPEN: Burns takes over lead with second-round 65

(photo from pgatour.com) Sam Burns who has a two shot lead at the Safeway Open on Friday in Napa

By Jeremy Harness

Sam Burns shot a seven-under round of 65 and grabbed a two-shot lead at the Safeway Open Friday afternoon during the second round of play.

Burns, who finished last season 111th in the FedEx Cup race, was only one shot behind the lead after the first round, but he did not start out very well. After making par at his starting hole, the 10th, he suffered a damaging double bogey at the 11th.

That seemed to give him a jump start, as he birdied three holes in a row and then went on to birdie two of the next four holes. He kept that momentum going with four more birdies on his second nine.

“Yeah, I think it pissed me off a little bit, woke me up, I guess,” Burns said. “It was early, cold. It was kind of like it picked me up, like hey, let’s go. Just kind of stuck with it and the golf course opened up for me the rest of the day.”

He is two shots ahead of Harry Higgs, who made a huge charge on Friday. He had the shot of the day at his very last hole, when he holed out from 230 yards out at the par-5 ninth for a double eagle, otherwise known as an albatross.

Before that, he had a special, bogey-free round going, with six birdies on his first nine, including four birdies in a row at holes 15 through 18. His back none was rather quiet, other than a birdie at the par-4 third, before firing the big shot at No. 9.

He carded a 10-under round of 62, which was the low round of the day and launched him right into the thick of things at Silverado.

“What a wonderful way to end the day,” Higgs said. “(But) I was looking forward to a nap all day long, but now I might be too jacked up now to actually fall asleep.”

Russell Knox, who was the leader after the first round, shot a second-round 69 and is now three behind the lead, along with Cameron Percy and D.J Trahan.

“I hit the ball well today. I played fairly conservative into some holes,” Knox said. “I was kind of in between yardages, but I felt like I played well. I could have shot a lower score than I did. I didn’t really hole the putts today, but to finish birdie-birdie 3 under was very satisfying.”

NOTES: Five-time PGA Tour winner John Daly, who currently plays on the PGA Champions Tour, was diagnosed with bladder cancer.

The 54-year-old said he has undergone a procedure to remove the cancer as well as eight days of chemotherapy, and he was reportedly positive about the treatment despite an estimated 85 percent chance that it will eventually come back.

He is in the field at the Sanford International in Sioux Falls, S.D, and he is currently tied for 11th after a two-under round of 68 in the first round.

Oakland A’s game wrap: A’s grab eight runs in first three innings in 10-6 win vs. Rangers

(AP News photo) The Oakland A’s Matt Olson (28) comes home after hitting a grand slam in the first inning and is greeted by teammates Tommy La Stella, second from left rear, Ramon Laureano and Marcus Semien, right rear while Mark Canha (20) looks on

By Jeremiah Salmonson

The A’s are flying high. After taking four of five from the Astros in a five game set this week, the A’s headed out on the road for a weekend series against the Texas Rangers. The A’s, who up until Friday night had been 5-1 against the Rangers this season were looking to continue their great stretch of ball.

The A’s did just that. The A’s got out to an early advantage in the first inning. The first three innings the A’s walked followed by a Matt Olsen grand slam home run to take the 4-0 advantage. The A’s didn’t look back the rest of the way as they built a 9-1 lead going into the seventh inning.

The A’s bullpen, which has been stellar this season had a minor blip in the seventh. JB Wendelken gave up two runs after Mike Fiers started off the inning giving up a home run. Note I did say minor blip since the A’s bullpen finished out the game only giving up one more run to win 10-6.

Mike Fiers pitched pitched six plus innings with six hits and four runs all earned while striking five and walking two. He was countered by Luis Garcia who wasn’t able to get an out. He gave up three walks and a hit which was a grand slam and was pulled in the first inning.

Leading the way for the A’s on offense was Matt Olsen, Sean Murphy, and Robbie Grossman who combines for six hits and three home runs.

The A’s have now won 5-6 and appear right on track following the COVID lay-off after Daniel Mengden tested positive a few weeks ago.

The A’s will play the Rangers again in Arlington on Saturday for a double header starting at 2 PM PST. Starters in the front game Oakland starter Daulton Jeffries (0-0 ERA 0.00) and for the Rangers Nick Goody (0-0 ERA 6.23) in the night cap for the A’s Chris Bassitt (3-2 ERA 3.12) and for the Rangers Kolby Allard (0-5 ERA 7.22)

Sounders burst Quakes bubble with Sound beating 7-1

The Seattle Sounders had plenty reason to celebrate last night at Centurylink Field as they clobbered the San Jose Earthquakes in one of San Jose’s worst defeats in franchise history (mls.com photo)

By Pearl Lo

Who’d a thunk it? The San Jose Earthquakes going to the MLS is Back Tournament they started out so well and lost a tough game by tournaments end to get eliminated although they had made it to the quarterfinals. The Quakes showed they can compete but after the tournament and getting back to regular season travel and playing in San Jose things started to fall apart.

With the 7-1 loss on Thursday night to the Seattle Sounders it was the Quakes worse loss in their franchise history and it dropped them to last place in the Western Conference (2W-4L-3D) it also marked the most goals surrendered by any MLS team in history in nine matches for the regular season.

Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda faced the media after the humiliating loss saying, “In this restart of the regular season we’re really doing bad,”  Almeyda told the media at Centurylink Stadium post game “When we had reached a level to be competitive [in Orlando] it’s because defenders, midfielders and attackers played the same way. And today there was not a defender, midfielder or attacker who has played better than the others. The coach, and that’s me, and the team played really poorly and we have to get ourselves out of this.”

The Sounders were a very prepared team and the last time the Quakes faced them that was in the bubble in Orlando and the game finished in a 1-1 draw. But at Centurylink a whole different futbol game. The Sounders dominated from start to finish and that is something Quakes star Chris Wondolowski had a hard time with following the game saying the Quakes are being punished and rightfully so when things are not getting done, “I think we need to execute the game plan. That’s the biggest difference,” Wondolowski said. “When you play unselfish, some special things happen. When it doesn’t, it’s a fine line between the haves and have-nots, especially in this league. Right now we’re getting punished, and rightfully so, and it’s not good enough all across the board.”

The Quakes return home for their next match on Sun at 8:00 pm on Sep 13th at Avaya Stadium they host the LA Galaxy and will try to get into the regular season win column. The Quakes have one draw and three ties in the regular season.
