Earthquakes struggle again in second half against Dynamo in 3-2 loss

Photo: Michael Wyke/Contributor to chron.com: Houston Dynamo forward Romell Quioto is swarmed by fans after he jumped into the stands after scoring the winning goal against the San Jose Earthquakes during the second half of their MLS game at BBVA Compass Stadium Saturday, Sep. 29, 2018 in Houston, TX.

By Pearl Allison Lo

The San Jose Earthquakes’ inability to score in the second half again cost them as they fell to the Houston Dynamo 3-2 at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday.

The Quakes were up 2-0 after the first half,  but the Dynamo came back to earn the win in the 87th minute.

San Jose is now winless in their last five. Three of the results have been a one goal differential.

The Quakes opponent again put up a lot of shots against their net, as they were outshot 19-8.

Houston had just won their first ever US Open Cup on Wednesday.

San Jose started their scoring when they ended a scoreless streak that started after the 61st minute in their September 19th game.

Chris Wondolowski was the last member of the team to score and he did it again in the 37th minute. Tommy Thompson drew a penalty and Wondolowski converted to make him just two shy of the MLS all-time record with his 143rd goal.

The Earthquakes got help from the Dynamo eight minutes later when Alejandro Fuenmayor scored on his own net.

Wondolowski commented,”It was a great ball in by Jackson [Yueill], squared it across. I was there. Thought I would get a touch, but the defender came sliding in and got a touch as well.”

Two substitutions by either team filled in the gaps between each of Houston’s three goals in the second half.

Mauro Manotas scored in the 56th minute.

Quakes interim head coach Steve Ralston said, “Frustration is a good word…to find ourselves up 2-0 was nice. I told the guys, ‘Listen, this has happened too much this season. We need to finish this game out…we have to raise our level of play.’ And we didn’t. Once they scored the first goal, we were mentally weak and we felt like this happened oh-so-many times to us and I don’t think we have the courage to get out of it right now.”

Tomás Martínez evened the score in the 68th minute.

Ralston put in Florian Jungwirth in the 76th minute and Danny Hoesen in the 82nd minute, but it was to of no avail.

Second-half substitute Romell Quioto gave the Quakes more heartbreak when he scored.

Ralston’s message after the horn blew, “I sat with them and told them, ‘It’s not good enough. We know that. We have to be brave and we have to pick each other up and we have to do the little things better.’ We’ll see. We have three games. What do they want to make of it?”

Eagles beat Barracuda 4-2 to split preseason series

photo by sjbarracuda.com The San Jose Barracuda Zach Frye (87) anticipates the puck in the Barracuda’s game in Colorado against the Eagles to complete the two game preseason

By Marko Ukalovic

The San Jose Barracuda weren’t able to sweep their only series of the preseason as the Colorado Eagles beat San Jose 4-2 at Budweiser Events Center on Saturday evening.

Sergei Boikov drew first blood for the Eagles in the first period. He went to coast to coast as he skated up the right wing and fired a shot into the far corner of the goal past Cuda goalie Josef Korenar for his first goal of the pre-season at the 12:30 mark.

San Jose would take advantage of a short-handed opportunity two minutes before the 1st intermission. Jon Martin led a 2-on-1 short handed break when he sent a crossing pass over to Manny Wiederer, who finished off short-handed chance with a tap in into an empty net for his first goal of the pre-season at the 17:51 mark.

Boikov would help give Colorado back the lead early in the second period when he whipped over a pass to Ty Lewis, who snapped a shot over the far left pad of Korenar for his first goal of the pre-season at the 3:36 mark

Halfway through the second period, Austin Lotz replaced Korenar in between the pipes. Both teams weren’t able to capitalize on their power play opportunity as the Eagles went into the second intermission with a 2-1 lead.

In the third period, Colorado would put the game away with two goals. Andrew Aggozino scored on a rebound chance that beat Lotz to the right side at the 2:57 mark. The power play goal was the first of the pre-season for Aggozino. Michael Joly scored on a pretty one -timer that was a result of an 2-on-1 break at the 12:31 mark.

The Cuda would get a late goal when newly acquired Francis Perron scored to cut the lead in half at the 18:51 mark.

Pavel Francouz (1-0) earned the win by making 27 saves while Lotz took the loss in relief (0-1), allowing two goals on nine shots.

UP NEXT: San Jose opens up the 2018-19 regular season on Friday, October 5 as they host their SoCal rival, the Ontario Reign, at the SAP Center at 7:00 pm PT.

MLB The Show podcast with Matt Harrington: Will A’s use bullpenning for AL Wild Card Game?; Will the Giants shop MadBum?; Players prefer GMs in their 30s

On the MLB The Show podcast with Matt:

#1 The Oakland A’s who play in New York this Wednesday for the AL Wild Card game lost on Friday night to the Los Angeles Angels. How much of a concern will it be for Oakland since they’ve been bullpenning to use a starter from their rotation after bullpenning for the last few weeks?

#2 Will the San Francisco Giants shop pitcher Madison Bumgarner, and if so, will the Giants be looking for prospects?

#3 The new wave of general managers are in their 30s. 57 MLB scouts have been fired that were over the age of 52 as it’s been noted that the ball players don’t won’t to take orders from general managers who are in their 50s, but want to work with GMs who are in their 30s.

#4 The Baltimore Orioles have benched their first baseman Chris Davis for the rest of the season. Davis hitting .168–the lowest qualifier in MLB history.

#5 The Cubs got a win over the St. Louis Cardinals 8-4 and dimmed the Cards’ chances of having any chance at the NL Wild Card. The Cards are 7.5 games out in the NL Central and have lost four straight games.

Oakland Raiders podcast with Joe Hawkes Beamon: Raiders and Carr battle to get first season win–this time, at home against the Browns

On the Raiders podcast with Joe:

The Oakland Raiders are winless 0-3. They’re coming on to face the Cleveland Browns at the Coliseum. Can the Raiders win one at home this Sunday? For Browns head coach, Hue Jackson, it’s a return of glory of sorts to face his former team, the Raiders, and to coach against them in Oakland. The Raiders’ Jordy Nelson went for 173 yards and six catches great game last Sunday against a rugged Miami club.

For the Raiders, there’s a different receiving star each week Jared Cook with 180 yards vs. the Rams in Week 1, wide receiver Amari Cooper with 116 yards vs. Denver in Week 2. For the Raiders quarterback. Derek Carr with 345 yards, 27-39 with one touchdown. Can Carr lead this team to their first victory this Sunday?

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Lami: Beathard has the world on his shoulders, but he’s been here before

On the 49ers podcast with Joe:

The out inbounds was the ACL tear heard round the world for 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo last Sunday in Kansas City. C.J. Beathard was last year’s starter until Garoppolo came along. Can the 49ers really count Beathard against the Chargers this Sunday?

Beathard completed 53% of his throws last season with six interception and four touchdowns. What will be Beathard’s biggest responsibility taking over at starter? The 49ers are looking for win number two. What’s their best plan against the Chargers–the passing or the ground game?

San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca: What’s the top highlight of this season? Who will be returning next season from the bullpen?

On the Giants podcast with Michael:

Our very own Morris Phillips says the top of the Giants offense on Wednesday was basically provided by catcher Aramis Garcia. Garcia hit one into the left field bleachers against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night. It was not much, but Garcia contributed and manager Bruce Bochy said, “We were on hit away we’ve done that a few times.”

The Giants avoided sweep in the this series getting a win on Tuesday night 5-4 using seven pitchers. Of those pitchers Bochy was showcasing were Steven Okert, Reyes Montana, and Tony Watson for next season. The quest for a new general manager will begin this off season. This is the last Giants podcast for us and Michael tells us what his top highlight of 2018 is.
