#1 A’s almost pulled off another win at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, but the Yankees were on a mission. After getting swept in the Yankees last meeting with the A’s and dropping the first game of the series the Bronx Bombers were not allowing it to happen in game two of the series as they pulled off a 4-3 11th inning win to tie the series.

#2 DJ LeMahieu hit the game-winning blast and walked off with the game-winning hit. LeMahieu is one of many key players who have been heroic in some of the Yankees wins this season.

#3 The A’s came into New York and after sweeping the Yankees in three in Oakland, and you have to know after losing the first game to open this series, the Yankees were saying no more.

#4 The Yanks’ Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez each homered and Judge made a catch to rob the A’s Matt Chapman of a home run in the top of the 10th.

#5 Oakland A’s pitcher Sean Manaea (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will get a start his first appearance since last season. He’ll be matched up against New York Yankees starter J.A. Happ (11-8, 5.57 ERA) for the finale of the series at Yankee Stadium.

Earthquakes Saturday game recap: Wondolowski gets 157th league-leading goal as Quakes shutout Orlando City 3-0

SAN JOSE — The 2019 MLS season is rapidly approaching the business end and the San Jose Earthquakes are trying to solidify their playoff position. With seven games left, San Jose sat squarely in third place. after coming of a three-game losing streak, they won their second consecutive game convincingly against Orlando City 3-0.

San Jose started the match shot of a cannon. In the third minute of the match Magnus Eriksson wove through the box and delivered the first goal of the match. It was the beginning to a fruitful first half. Chris Wondolowski added to his legend, scoring in the 20th and 32nd minutes, increasing his MLS All-Time goals scored record to 157. The Quakes we dominant in the first half. Controlling 63% of possession with 13 shots on goal.

The second half of the match slowed down considerably. A frustrated Orlando City began playing a high press and the game became more physical, causing multiple altercations. Whereas there were no bookings in the first half, there were four yellow cards in the second. Despite the constant pressure Orlando was able to produce the San Jose defense was able to hold up. The Quakes defense has been suspect at times this season but they Quakes rectified that by getting the clean sheet.

The Earthquakes have been galvanized by their head coach Matias Almeyda. Almeyda is serving a three-game league suspension after a heated argument with the referees after no-call on a clear handball in the box during a game in in Los Angeles a week ago.

When asked about the suspension Wondolowski stated, “Love his passion, I love that he was sticking up for us. It was clear handball in LA, we don’t normally get those calls.” The Orlando City game was the second without Almeyda, who will be back in action on September 14th.

For now, the Quakes must stay focused on the final six games of the season. With the win over Orlando they moved into second place in the Western Conference. They will head east for a three-game road trip.

Florian Jungwirth, defender emphasized the importance of road games after the win, said, “Now it’s important to show the same performance on the road that we do at home.”

If San Jose can manage that, they will be hosting a playoff game come October.

#1 Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs who passed away at age 27 the autopsy showed that Skaggs took “alcohol, fentanyl and oxycodone intoxication with terminal aspiration of gastric contents” according to a statement released by the Angels. Skaggs choked on his own vomit when the Angels were in Arlington in preparation to play the Texas Rangers, but on the day Skaggs passed away, the game was canceled due to his death.

#2 The Angels released a statement saying that the team will not rest until it gets a full investigation as to who supplied Skaggs with the painkillers and alcohol. The Skaggs family along with the Angels said that the team has hired Texas attorney Rusty Hardin to help with the investigation.

#3 The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed Max Muncy on the 10-day IL due to a wrist fracture. Muncy hopes not to miss more than 10 days and has 33 home runs and 87 RBIs this season. Muncy took a pitch on the wrist as he prepared to swing the pitch was expected to break away but jammed him.

#4 San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey hit in the five-hole for the first time this season on Thursday night. Giants manager Bruce Bochy made the move stating that Posey hitting .246 with six home runs and 35 RBIs was a “change of scenery move.” Posey went 1-4 on Thursday night against San Diego and hit fifth again on Friday night.

#5 Hurricane Dorian was upgraded to a category four and is headed for Miami. The Miami Marlins reportedly will leave three panels of the roof of their park open to avoid giving lift to the roof. The hatches are baton down, but the question remains what condition the park will be in after the storm and what impact will Dorian have on the community in order for the Marlins to continue play. The Fish are scheduled to host the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

Yanks get four big flies–LeMahieu, Judge, and Sanchez (2), edge A’s 4-3 in 11

NEW YORK — The Oakland Athletics lost to the New York Yankees for the first time this season on Saturday afternoon, 4-3 in 11 innings, after DJ LeMahieu hit a home run on Lou Trivino’s first pitch in the 11th inning.

Trevino allowed no runs in two innings before throwing a fastball that LeMahieu hit right field out of the ballpark, his second walk-off hit of the season.

A’s manager Bob Melvin said he has seen signs of Trivino and pitcher Blake Treinen, who allowed no runs in the ninth inning, “pitching better recently” and “hopefully it’s a trend.”

The Yankees gained momentum in the first inning when Gary Sanchez hit a home run on a fly ball to left field for a 1-0 lead.

Oakland responded in the fourth inning when Matt Olson hit a homer on a fly ball to right center field, and Matt Chapman scored, putting the A’s up 2-1. But in the fifth inning, Sanchez hit another home run on a fly ball to right center field to tie the game at 2-2.

The A’s took a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning when Chapman doubled on a line drive to left field, allowing Robbie Grossman to score. New York evened the score at 3-3 in the eight inning when Aaron Judge hit a home run off Joakim Soriaon on a fly ball to right field, and the game went into extra innings. All of New York’s runs were solo home runs.

“That was kind of the theme of the game today—solo shots,” A’s starting pitcher Homer Bailey said.

Oakland left 15 players on base and was 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. A’s manager Bob Melvin did not think (too bad).

“You leave 15 on, it comes back to bite you at some time,” Melvin said. “But you know what, we came back and the lead and were one pitch away from going into the ninth inning with it and Chappie’s ball, unless you have a 10-foot outfielder in right field, it probably goes out.”

Melvin concluded “it’s a game of inches today,” and, “sometimes they don’t come through, most times here recently, they do.”

A’s batter Mark Canha said the bullpen gave them opportunities and “we just couldn’t do it.”

“We just have to have some better at-bats tomorrow because I felt like we were just bon the cusp of breaking it open a few times,” Canha said. “We just needed that one hit and it didn’t work out unfortunately.”

The A’s beat the Yankees 3-0 in Oakland and won Friday night at Yankee Stadium. The A’s (78-57) and Yankees (89-48) play the last game of the series, tied at 1-1, Sunday with first pitch at 1:05 p.m. ET.

#1 San Francisco second baseman Mauricio Dubon is the player the Giants just might be looking for at second. On Thursday night at Oracle Park, he made a great defensive stop at second for a put out in the second inning.

#2 Dubon also got his first big league hit with shot down the right field line, which he got the retrieved ball for a souvenir.

#3 Dubon had also studied a lot of film on the key stone combination of Giant shortstop Brandon Crawford and former Giants second baseman Joe Panik. Dubon showed his handy work on a 1-4-3 double play. Dubon is showing that he brought some skills up from the minors.

#4 After having such a great rookie year last season, Giants pitcher Derek Rodriguez struggled. Rodriguez gave up two home runs to the Pads on Thursday night and manager Bruce Bochy might rethink having Rodriguez in the rotation and Derek might find his way back in the bullpen.

#5 This will be the last September for call-ups. Next season, the roster will be kept down to 26. What will that feel like and was it a mistake to take away the 40-man call-up roster in September next season?

#1 It was preseason, but there were no giveaways in this contest at Centurylink Field in Seattle on Thursday Night Football as the Seattle Seahawks edged the Oakland Raiders 17-15. Players on both sides were working and fighting for jobs that later will see a roster trimmed down in half.

#2 For Raiders backup quarterback Nathan Peterman, he worked his way to the backup job throwing 20-27 for 158 yards. Peterman did have an impressive preseason.

#3 Third stringer Mike Glennon went 9-13 and 78 yards. Head coach Jon Gruden said after the Raiders third preseason game in Winnipeg, he will be going with three quarterback Derek Carr, Peterman and Glennon.

#4 Carr stayed back in Oakland with the rest of the Raiders starters and got rest before the Raiders open the season on Monday Night Football on September 9th at the Oakland Coliseum.

#1 It’s only preseason but on Thursday Night Football, both teams were clawing and scratching to get a win in a game that the San Diego Chargers had a three-point lead 27-24 on the San Francisco 49ers. How impressed were you with the work the 49ers put out?

#2 The 49ers used Wilton Speight, C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens at quarterback. Was head coach Kyle Shanahan just trying to get confirmation on whose going to be the backup and evaluate who really looks good in the final preseason game?

#3 Wilton Speight threw for 51 yards going 6-13. Does he have a shot to make the team in some capacity?

#4 CJ Beathard went 6-9 for 58 yards and one touchdown and Nick Mullens went 1-3 for 13 yards. The numbers don’t say much, but it’s most likely these two will wind up being starter Jimmy Garoppolo’s backups.

#5 Talk about running back Jerrick McKinnon’s ACL tear — that will be his third setback during his recovery. The 49ers signed him for $30 million.

49ers fall to Chargers 27-24, but bubble guys show flashes

SANTA CLARA – The 49ers lost their final preseason game of the year, 27-24 to the Los Angeles Chargers, but really, the night was about guys trying to make the team getting one last chance to put some good tape out there.

One of those guys is running back Jeff Wilson Jr., and on Thursday, he ran like he wanted that roster spot. He was the focal point of the team’s second drive, and to cap it off, he made an almost Walter Payton-esque cutback across the field to his right and got a kinda-sorta block from quarterback C.J Beathard on his way to a 41-yard touchdown that gave the 49ers a 7-6 lead near the end of the first quarter.

One quarter later, he also made a nice catch of a pass from Beathard that was at around his knees and was also behind him and converted it into a first down.

After an opening-drive field goal for the Chargers, D.J Reed Jr. took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 56 yards into Charger territory. Reed, who is a backup corner, is thought of as a guy who can play multiple corner positions – outside as well as in the slot – and with his special-teams playmaking ability, that should bolster his chances of making the 53-man roster that will suit up in Tampa for Week 1 of the regular season.

Dre Greenlaw is another guy who flashed on Thursday, and looks like he has solidified his spot on the team as a linebacker. After Damontre Moore whiffed on a sack attempt early in the second quarter, Greenlaw tracked Chargers quarterback Cardale Jones down and stood him up for a five-yard loss, to go along with a very nice open-field tackle on the first drive of the game.

Otherwise, the 49ers’ defense looked listless in the first half, regularly giving up chunk plays down the field before the Chargers were able to punch it in from point-blank range, eventually taking a 20-7 lead late in the second quarter.

The one things that has kept Kendrick Bourne from securing a spot on the roster has been his case of the drops, and that showed up the first time he was thrown to on Thursday, as he ran a nice crossing pattern but let the pass clank off his hands, taking away a first down.

However, he cashed in on the next opportunity he got, with a minute left in the first half. As Beathard eluded the Charger rush, he overthrew his intended target. But like a good backstop, Bourne was there to make a sliding catch in the end zone, the 21-yard touchdown cutting LA’s lead to 20-14.

NOTES: Prior to Thursday’s game, the 49ers released linebacker Malcolm Smith, who had spent most of his tenure with the team on the sidelines with assorted injuries, most notably a torn pectoral muscle that kept him out for the entire 2017 season.

The team also waived offensive linemen Willie Beavers and Dillon Day. The 49ers turned around and signed corner Chris Campbell, running back Brandon Wilds and receiver Nick Williams, who had a pair of catches in the third quarter.

UP NEXT: The 49ers take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1:25 p.m. Game will be broadcast on FOX.
