SAN FRANCISCO–Wednesday, another ruffled feather was added to the cap of this disastrous season for the 2026 San Francisco Giants, as with their 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins, the Giants will go the entire season without a four-game winning streak.
In their 144-year history that goes all the way back to 1883, when Chester A. Arthur was president, the Giants have never gone an entire season without a four-game winning streak. This season has been an unmitigated disaster for the Giants, and with four games left to play, they had to win all four of them to avoid suffering this kind of humiliation for the first time in franchise history.
Wednesday would be a matchup of lefties on this smoky day at Oracle Park. Cesar Perdomo would take the ball for the Giants, who looked to take the rubber match in this series. Connor Prielipp would make the start for Minnesota.
Perdomo got off to a nice start, as he threw a one, two, three top of the first inning, and a quick and scoreless second. However, with two outs in the top of the third, Luke Keaschall hit a solo home run to left field to give the Twins a 1-0 lead.
Prielipp retired the first seven he faced before escaping a jam in the bottom of the third. Prielipp found himself in another jam in the bottom of the fourth. He was an out away from getting out of this one as well, but Shay Whitcomb knocked in a pair with a base-hit to right to give the Giants the lead.
The Twins tied the game in the top of the fifth. Ben Ross tripled with one out, and Keaschall got him in with a sacrifice fly.
Perdomo and Keaschall would both be done after five and a third innings, and both were evenly matched for the most park. Both pitchers gave up two runs. Perdomo gave up five hits, and Keaschall gave up four.
Dylan Smith took the ball for the top of the seventh, and walked Emmanuel Rodriguez to start the inning. Pinch-hitter Kody Clemens came up, and got to second after Christian Koss’ throw to try and complete a double play sailed into the Twins’ dugout. Another pinch-hitter, Walker Jenkins, then singled the other way to right, which knocked in Clemens to give the Twins the lead.
An interesting play then happened. Keaschell appeared to have been hit on the hand with two strikes. However, after the Giants challenged the call, it turned out it was a foul tip into the glove of Andrew Knizner for the second out of the inning.
Twins Manager Derek Shelton thought Jenkins, who was going on the pitch, should still have been entitled to second base. The ball is still live on a foul tip caught by the catcher. However, Jenkins was held at first.
Jenkins would get to second on a walk to Brooks Lee. Josh Bell then lined a base-hit to single, which knocked in Jenkins, and make it 4-2.
Andrew Morris was on the mound for the bottom of the ninth, and he retired the first two men he faced. The Giants had one last chance to start a four-game winning streak. Drew Gilbert was down to his last strike, but he lined a base-hit to right. Ryan Jeffers then walked, and Whitcomb came to the plate. This crowd made all the noise they could, but Whitcomb struck out to end the game.
There it was. For the first time in the 144-year history of Giants baseball, they will go an entire season without a four-game winning streak. They will also go the entire season without a winning month.
Yoendrys Gomez got the win for Minnesota. Dylan Smith was the man who gave up the two runs for the seventh, so he got the loss. Andrew Morris picked up the save.
The Giants fall to 65-94 overall. The Giants will finish the season with the worst interleague record in all of baseball at 16-32. The funny thing is that the Twins will finish with the second-worst interleague record at 18-30.
The Giants will have the day off Thursday, and then the Dodgers will come in for three to close out the season. The Giants will have a chance to deprive the Dodgers of the top seed in the National League, so there’s that.
Prior to the game on Friday night, the Willie Mac Award will be presented. The Award is presented every year to the player, who in the eyes of his teammates, coaches, trainers and manager, best exemplifies the leadership of the late-great hall-of-famer, Willie McCovey.
Yunior Marte will make the start for the Giants on Friday night. The Dodgers have yet to announce their starter.
First pitch will be at 7:15 p.m.
