Seahawks take down 49ers 28-21 as SF anchor the cellar in the NFC West

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo watched from the sidelines during the second half after injuring his calf against the Seattle Seahawks at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara on Sun Oct 3, 2021 (AP News photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

SANTA CLARA, Calif—It was a tale of two halves and two quarterbacks.

The San Francisco 49ers contained Russel Wilson in the first half but the Seattle Seahawks quarterback shined in the second half to lead his team to a 28-21 victory on Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium.

Seattle is now 2-2 on the season and in third place in the NFC West. San Francisco’s (2-2) second loss in a row has them anchoring the cellar after starting the season 2-0.

San Francisco jumped out to a good start scoring on their first possession. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was six for six for 70 yards that ended with a 21 yard touchdown reception to backup tight end Ross Dwelley.

The 49ers defense looked like the championship caliber defense it possessed that went to the Super Bowl two years ago.

They made life hell for the Seahawks offense in the first 27 minutes. They forced five straight three and outs and sacked Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson three times to force punts. Dee Ford led the way with 1.5 sacks and Nick Bosa also registered a sack.

Seattle after five offensive drives had a total of minus seven yards of offense.

However the Seahawks defense kept them in the game as they limited the 49ers to just seven points in the first half.

Wilson gave the Seahawks a spark just before halftime when he led a six play, 80 yard drive that resulted in a 12 yard touchdown pass to DK Metcalf with 1:54 remaining in the first half.

“It totally felt like that,” said Seahawks head coach Pete Carrol regarding their first score as a momentum turner. “Because we had been playing well on defense. It’s like we kinda really need something to hang our hat on.”

Garoppolo suffered an apparent right calf injury during the first drive of the game. He played through the pain to finish the half. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan replaced him in the second half with rookie quarterback Trey Lance.

Garoppolo finished 14 of 23 for 165 yards with one touchdown, one interception and a rating of 79.1.

“I don’t know exactly what happened,” said Garoppolo. “Tweaked the calf. It hurt initially. I thought I’d keep trying, keep trying to go and just (it) just kept getting worse and worse, traveling down to the Achilles a little bit. Hoping for the best right now.”

Seattle carried that momentum over to the second half as they scored two touchdown in a span of 1:24 in the first five minutes of the third quarter.

Wilson rushed for a 16 yard touchdown where he turned the corner on the left side and made a diving effort for the pylon to extend Seattle’s lead to 14-7.

On the ensuing kickoff, Trenton Cannon fumbled the football and turned the ball over to the Seahawks inside the 20 yard line.

Two plays later Russell showed showed off some Houdini skills as he spun around to avoid being in the grasp of Bosa and looked to the right side and fired a ball into the endzone where Freddie Swain made a tough catch for the touchdown.

San Francisco didn’t go down quietly as they took advantage of a missed defensive assignment for Seattle.

Lance found Deebo Samuel all alone thanks to a blown coverage along the right sideline at the 50 yard line and Samuel raced the rest way of the way to pay dirt for a 75 yard touchdown reception that cut Seattle’s lead to 21-13.

“We had to make some moves on the fly, do some thing that he (Lance) was comfortable with. Thought we got better as we went,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan regarding Lance’s performance.

The extra point was taken by 49ers punter Mitch Wishnowsky, due to kicker Robbie Gould’s groin injury he suffered earlier in the game. Wishnowsky sent the kick wide left for the failed extra point attempt.

Seattle gave them selves an insurance score when they completed a 10 play, 81 yard drive capped off by a 14 yard rushing touchdown from Alex Collins with 12:07 remaining in the fourth quarter.

While Lance was able to extend plays with his quick feet, he also made some poor throws in the second half that resulted in stalled drives for San Francisco.

The 49ers cut the lead to a one-score game when Lance found Samuel in the end zone from eight yards out for Samuel’s second touchdown of the afternoon. Lance then rushed up the middle into the end zone for a successful two-point conversion with 1:20 left in the game.

Seattle was able to recover the onside kick and closed out the game leaving town snapping their two game losing streak.

Wilson finished with a respectable 16 of 23 for 149 yards, two touchdowns and a rating of 116.0.

Samuel was the lone bright spot for San Francisco as he finished with eight receptions for 156 yards and two TD’s. Lance ended going 9 of 18 for 157 yards and two touchdowns and a rating of 117.1.

GAME NOTES: The 49ers activated defensive lineman Maurice Hurst to the active roster before the game.

K’Wuan Williams, Elijah Mitchell, Josh Norman, Aaron Banks and Zach Kerr were inactive for San Francisco.

Dee Eskridge, Benson Mayowa, John Reid, Brandon Shell, Jamarco Jones and L.J. Collier were inactive for Seattle.

Seattle leads the all-time series 29-17.

Wilson has never lost three games in a row in his NFL career.

Tackle Trent Williams left the game in the 4th Q with an elbow injury and did not finish the game.

UP NEXT: San Francisco travels out to Arizona to take on the Cardinals on Sunday 10/10 at 1:25pm at State Farm Stadium.

White’s hat trick power Whitecaps to 3-0 shutout win over Earthquakes

by Marko Ukalovic

Brian White is definitely enjoying his change of scenery.

The Vancouver Whitecaps striker scored a hat trick to lead his team to a 3-0 shutout victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday evening at BC Place.

Since being traded from the New York Red Bulls back in June, White has scored nine goals in 20 matches since his arrival, with eight of those coming in his last nine games. He had zero goals with New York.

Vancouver are unbeaten in its last four matches (2-0-2) and have climbed up to eighth place in the Western Conference, one point behind Minnesota for the final playoff spot. San Jose have lost two matches in a row and are quietly slipping away from the playoff race with six games remaining in the season.

White scored his first goal after a nice touch pass over to Ryan Gauld inside the box. Gauld’s shot was saved by Quakes goalie JT Marcinkowski but the rebound was cleaned up by White in the 26th minute.

San Jose (8-11-9-33 points) only generated two shots on target in the first 45 minutes. Both shots by Cristian Espinoza in the 25th minute and Jackson Yueill in the 39th minute were easily handled by Whitecaps goalie Maxime Crépeau.

Vancouver (9-8-10-37 points) doubled their lead in the 59th minute off a set piece. Déiber Caicedo floated a free kick from near the right end line into the middle where an unmarked White headed the ball into the back of the net in the upper left corner for his second goal of the evening.

“We had to make movements to free up players in certain zones,” said Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda. “Those movements were slow. I thought the match was even in the first half. On three or four occasions, we were able to have the control we were looking for. We met a team that has been growing in important ways, with a secure system of play. We knew that if we conceded a goal, it would be hard to turn it around because they are secure on defense. In the second half, we took more risks. The set piece played a fundamental factor against us.”

White completed the hat trick in the 73rd minute once again off another set piece. This time Gauld serviced a corner kick into the middle of the box and once again the Quakes left White unmarked for a header just inside the right corner of the goal for his ninth goal of the season.

The closest San Jose came to getting on the board came late in the second half. Espinoza sent in a shot from 25 yards out but Crépeau made a jumping catch to preserve the shutout.

“We have to keep improving but we have less and less time. We’re talking about the last six games and a projection of our future in which there is some instability. Personally, I’d like to plan for what is coming up. We have to live day by day, we’d love to plan for the future, but the reality is different,” Almeyda said.

Crépeau finished the match stopping all five shots on target to earn his ninth victory of the season. Marcinkowski made three saves on six shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: Each team finished with four corner kicks.

San Jose is now 8-10-10 all-time vs. Vancouver, including a 2-9-3 record on the road.

San Jose had its eight-game unbeaten streak on the road, longest in club history, snapped with the loss.

UP NEXT: San Jose return to action on Saturday 10/16 when they travel out to Los Angeles to take on LAFC at 12:30pm at Banc of California Stadium.

A’s get clobbered in game two by Astros 10-4; Sunday last game of season for A’s

The Oakland A’s hitter Tony Kemp (5) has a look of surprise after the Houston Astros right fielder Kyle Tucker makes the catch on Kemp’s fly ball to end the top of the sixth inning at Minute Maid Field in Houston on Sat Oct 2, 2021 (AP News photo)

A’s Lose Game Two to Astros 10-4

By Barbara.Mason

With two games left in the season, the Oakland A’s took on the Houston Astros in Game Two of their final regular season series at Minute Maid Field in Houston.

As the A’s have done so often this year they took an early 2-0 lead. The Houston Astros fired back with three home runs off Paul Blackburn . Alvarez, Castro and Gurriel all hit long balls. After the Gurriel home run in the third inning Blackburn was relieved by James Kaprielian. Blackburn only went a couple innings before the change. The third home run gave Houston a 6-2 lead.

The A’s had scored a single run in the fifth inning. They still trailed 6-3 although the Astros had more in store for Oakland. They would score two runs in the sixth inning and in the seventh inning a fourth home run from Tucker allowing Gurriel to score.

The A’s had one run in the eighth inning. A single by Tony Kemp brought Matt Chapman home. It was a great game for Kemp who had 4 out of 5 hits. He was robed of a home run by Tucker which could have been a real difference maker. There were some unfortunate innings in this game for Oakland. The final was 10-4 in favor of Houston.

With this win Houston secured home field advantage in the playoffs and will host the Chicago White Sox for game 1 of the ALDS. Tomorrow in the last game of the season Oakland has the chance to win the series which would be a great way to end the season. While not what they were fighting for in the last several months it would be something positive they would take into the off-season.

In tomorrow’s game Cole Irvin will take the mound for Oakland and Jose Urquidy for Houston. First pitch is scheduled for 12:10.

Cal can’t get any offense going drop third straight to WSU 21-6

California quarterback Chase Garbers (7) starts the quarterback keeper against the Washington State Cougars during the first quarter at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley on Sat Oct 2, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Morris Phillips and Michael Duca

It’s tough to lose three straight but it’s tougher to lose on your own home field which the Cal Golden Bears (1-4) did at UC Berkeley Memorial Stadium to the Washington State Cougars (2-3) 21-6.

The Cougars quarterback Jayden De Laura threw for three touchdowns, was 25-41 for 219 yards and was intercepted twice but the defense held their ground and De Laura and the offense just got enough scoring for the win.

On one of the two passes from De Laura to wide out Calvin Jackson Jr who made a one handed catch in the end zone at the corner. This was De Laura’s first game back since suffering a leg injury two weeks ago against the USC Trojans.

The 25 completions out of 41 attempts for De Laura tied his career best in a game and it helped the Cougars pick up their first win at Cal since the 2013 season. “It felt fine to go out there,” de Laura said. “I knew I had to bring some energy and do my part. I just gave the receivers and the running backs the ball and let them make plays.”

Jackson Jr had his way with the Cal defense with six receptions for 53 yards Jackson’s teammate wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling had a pretty decent afternoon himself with four catches for 36 yards and one touchdown.

The Cal offense just sputtered and it was tough especially to lose at home and Bears quarterback Chase Garbers came up empty handed for the afternoon not being able to throw one touchdown, going 14-30 for 152 yards and an interception.

The Bears next opponent the Oregon Ducks (4-1) No.3 next Sat Oct 9 who were just knocked off by the Stanford Cardinal (3-2) 31-24 will be pumped and ready to go and it’s the last thing the Bears want is to walk into a hornets nest which they can expect at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.

Garbers says the Bears need to be prepared and they need to find out who they are, “These next two weeks we’re really going to find out who we are as a team, who we are as people. They had our number, they did a great job and they just outplayed us. That happens.”

McKee throws for three touchdowns as Stanford hands Oregon first loss 35-24

Stanford Cardinal quarterback Tanner McKee keeps the ball in the first half of action against the Oregon Ducks at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto on Sat Oct 2, 2021 (AP News photo)

Stanford Hands Oregon First Loss of the Year 35-24

By Barbara Mason

Saturday afternoon Stanford took on the 4-0 Oregon Ducks. Last week Stanford lost to UCLA 35-24 and the 2-2 Cards were looking to upset the powerhouse Ducks in this game.

Stanford started this game with a 25 yard field goal to take the early lead. They added to their lead in the same quarter with a Tanner McKee pass to Brycen Tremayne for 18 yards and the touchdown. They now led 10-0.

Oregon would come around in the second quarter with their first score; an Anthony Brown 3 yard scamper for the touchdown. Stanford would also score a touchdown in the quarter. An Isaiah Sanders rush for two yards gave the Cards a 17-7 lead going into halftime. Stanford would have to pull out all the stops to stop the number three ranked Ducks.

The Ducks would start the second half with the ball. It would be a three and out on the opening drive of the second half for Oregon and the Stanford defense was keeping pressure on the Duck offense. A turnaround could be sensed in the second possession by Oregon. They began to dominate at the line of scrimmage something they hadn’t shown in the first half. At 8:32 in the third quarter C J Verdell scored on a one yard run making this a 3 point game 17-14.

Oregon began pressuring and pushing Stanford in the third quarter and the Cards were having trouble containing the Ducks. As the third quarter began to wind down Oregon did have a first and goal but could not cross the line and had to settle for a 22 yard field goal to tie up the game. Stanford did a great job keeping Oregon out of the end zone.

Oregon did however take the lead in the fourth quarter. Anthony Brown ran for 5 yards and a touchdown. The Ducks had taken the lead for the first time in this game 24-17.

Stanford’s get up and go got up and went in the second half. It’s hard to believe that Stanford had five false starts in the second half of this game. The Card offense and defense had a real let-down that really had started mid-way in the second quarter. This was when the Ducks really got going.

The Cards had a great drive going in the final two minutes. They had a first and goal with 12 seconds left on the clock. The loss of receiver Brycen Tremayne loomed large in this final drive. On fourth and goal a penalty gave Stanford another shot as the clock ran out. The Cards would tie up this game at 24 and this game went into overtime. The tying touchdown was a McKee pass to Elijah Higgins for two yards.

Oregon won the toss and elected to kick. Stanford scored on their first possession in overtime. McKee would connect with John Humphreys for 14 yards to take the 31-24 lead. The Ducks were not able to score and Stanford had the upset handing the Ducks their first loss of the year.

It was a shocker for the Ducks who had the game well in hand in the fourth quarter. Stanford’s record would improve to 3-2. They will take on Arizona State next Friday in Arizona

Gausman pitches into 8th, Garcia gives up winning run in 10th Pads edge Giants 3-2. SF magic number 1

San Francisco Giants starter Kevin Gausman acknowledges the crowd after being lifted in the top of the eighth inning against the San Diego Padres at Oracle Park in San Francisco (AP News photo)

San Diego. 3 – 11 – 0

San Francisco. 2 – 5 – 0.

10 innings

By Lewis Rubman

Saturday October 2, 2021

SAN FRANCISCO–With 106 wins under their belt and having clinched a postseason berth with their win over the San Diego (79-82) Padres on Thursday night, you’d think that the Giants’ (106-55) two remaining games against the Pads would be meaningless but it took ten innings to get a result tied up 2-2 the Padres scored a run in the top of the tenth to put the Giants chances to clinch the NL West on hold one more day in a 3-2 loss.

You would, however, be laboring under a misapprehension. The results of this weekend’s contests at Dodger Stadium and Oracle Park are of cardinal importance.

A Dodger sweep of the NL Central champion Brewers and a Giant failure to sweep the friars would set up a 163rd regular season game to determine which of the two teams would receive a bye and which would have to face the red hot St. Louis Cardinals in a wild card game that would send the loser home until spring training. And that’s not all. The winner of the LA-SF duel after either 162 or 163 games, would go on to have the home field advantage in any postseason series.

That’s important for any team, and the Giants, for all of the wins they have under their belt, will need every break they can get, not least because Brandon Belt’s having broken his left thumb on September 27 will keep him on the injured list until at least October 7, if San Francisco should get that deep into the postseason.

The Dodger game won’t start until 6:10 this evening, so when the dust had settled at Oracle Park after this afternoon’s nail biting loss to the Padres, nothing had been settled except that the Dodgers would last to fight another evening.

San Francisco took the lead in the bottom of the second, when, to chants of “MVP, MVP” Brandon Crawford looped a shift be damned lead off double to right off Padres starter Joe Musgrove and came home on Kris Bryant’s clean single to center.

San Francisco’s starter, Kevin Gausman, avoided any serious trouble until Fernando Tatís, Jr., fisted a double down the line to right with one down in the top of the fourth. The Padres left him stranded after Gausman retired Manny Machado and Jake Cronenworth on ground outs, preserving the home team´s slim lead.

The Giants threatened again in the fifth, putting their first two men on base via an infield single (Ruf) and a hit batter (Crawford). But Musgrove worked his way out of that jam with a liner to Machado at third (Bryant), another to Marisnick in left center, and nubber to the catcher (Duggar).

Musgrove was lifted for pinch hitter, Adam Frazier, with one out in the sixth. It turned out to be a smart move because Frazier singled to left. Trent Grisham forced him out of a sharp grounder, Ruf to Crawford, and then advanced to third on Tatís´s Texas League single to right center.

Machado’s sharp single to left drove in Tatís before Cronenworth grounded into a force, short to second to end the frame, but not before the damage had been done and the score was tied at one all.

Musgrove had turned in an admirable five innings of work, allowing just one run. on three hits and, although he hit Crawford with a pitch, no walks. He struck out four Giants, and threw a total of 70 pitches, only 18 of which were balls.

It took one pitch from Ross Detwiler, Musgrove’s replacement, for Austin Slater, batting for Wade, to untie the knot. He drove an 89 mph four seamer over the left center field fence for his 12th home run of the year.

It was the team’ s 18th quadradrangular pinch hit of the year, breaking the record in that category it had shared with the 2016 Cardinals. Detwiler set the next three Giants down in order and gave way to Pierce Johnson, who pitched a perfect seventh frame.

The 40,767 fans in attendance, or at least most of them, cheered Gausman as he walked off the mound before throwing a pitch in the top of the eighth, replaced by Zach Littell. San Francisco’s starting pitcher had gone seven full innings and allowed but one run, earned, on six hits and a walk. He threw 84 pitches, 63 for strikes, and struck out five Padres.

Tommy Phan, hitting for Johnson, led off with a 3-2 single to center and immediately was replaced by pinch runner Javy Guerra, who motored to third on Grishman’s double down the line to right, putting the tying and winning runs in scoring position. Tatís whiffed on a 97 mph four seamer for the first out.

Machado worked the count to 3-2 and then lifted a sacrifice fly to left for the Pads’ second out but also their second run. That ended Littell’s stint. José Alvarez took over and got Cronenworth out on a grounder to Crawford, once more eliciting chants of ¨MVP, MVP.¨

Daniel Hudson opened the eighth for San Diego. After disposing of Wilmer Flores, hitting for Alvarez he surrendered a single to left to Tommy LaStella but recovered to strike out Alex Dickerson, pinch hitting for Slater.

Like LaStella and Dickerson, Ruf worked the count full, but he swung and missed for the third strike, and we went into the ninth tied at two and with Camilo Doval on the hill for San Francisco.

Profar greeted him with a single to right. Ha-Seong Kim laced a sharp line drive to left center on which Ruf, who had just moved to left field, made a nice running catch. But Marisnick singled to left, putting the potential go ahead run in scoring position at second. Eric Hosmer then batted for Hudson. With the count at 1-1, he fouled off a 100 mph fast ball before swinging at and missing an 89 mph slider.

Now Tim Hill was on the mound for San Diego. Crawford sent Grisham to the 391 foot marker in straight away center field to corral his fly for the first out. Evan Longorria, who had replaced Bryant at the hot corner, flew out to right, and Yastrzemski grounded out to second.

The zombie runner in the top of the tenth was Caratini, since the last out of the ninth had been made by the pitcher’s spot. Kevin Castro was on the mound, facing the top of San Diego’s batting order. Grisham moved Caratini to within 90 feet of pay dirt with a grounder to second. Tatís struck out swinging, and Castro gave Machado a free pass, a decision that would please ironic students of Cuban history.

Then Castro returned to the dugout, replaced by Jarlín García. Cronenworth sent a hard liner past a diving Flores at first base, driving in Caratini and sending Machado to third, where he was stranded when Profar fouled out to Longoria.

Ex-Giant reliever Mark Melançon came in to try closing out the win for San Diego. He struck out Duggar. Buster Posey, who had been given a rest for this day game after a night, pinch hit for Casali and grounded weakly to the mound, sending the placed runner, Yastrzemski, to third. It was up to Wilmer Flores. He flew out to center, and it was time for the Giants to wait out the results of the Dodger-Brewer game down south.

Tim Hill was the winning pitcher. His record stands at 6-6, 3.62. Kelvin Castro, 1-1, 0.00, took the loss. The save went to Melançon, his 39th.

Sunday’s game is slated to start at 12:05. Logan Webb (10-3, 2.93) is San Francisco’s probable starting pitcher. The Padres haven’t decided who will go for them.
