Headline Sports podcast with London Marq: Trump says Rapinoe’s protest is inappropriate; War of words starting to brew between Trump and Rapinoe over protests; plus more

On the Headline Sports podcast with London:

#1 The war of tweets and words has initially begun at the US World Women’s soccer matches between President Trump and US Women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe. Rapinoe originally took a knee during national anthems during the 2016 games. Now she stands without putting her hand over her heart unlike the rest of the teammates. Rapinoe said she will not visit the White House if the US team wins the championship. Trump says by her not doing it, Rapinoe is inappropriate and said she should win first before she talks.

#2 Rapinoe said that the reason she is protesting is because of unjustified treatment by police and law enforcement officials towards minorities and people of color. Rapinoe told American Soccer Now, “Being a gay American, I know what it means to look at the flag and not have it protect all of your liberties.” With the World Cup going on, this will most likely not be the last of the stand off between Trump and Rapinoe.

#3 We asked London about the World Cup putting up signs on the scoreboard indicating that there will game delays for replay reviews. This lends to fans following the games and thinking that their team has the game in hand, but they’ll wait until a replay review has been called for.

#4 After going five straight games without a loss the San Jose Earthquakes lost to LAFC who took it to the Quakes with a 3-1 win in Los Angeles last week on Thursday. For LA, Adama Diomande scored twice, which led LAFC to the two-goal win.

#5 The Quakes continue their road trip tonight against Houston at Avaya Stadium in San Jose as they face the Dynamo. The Dynamo are in fifth place in the MLS West at 7-3-4. The Dynamo are 2-1-3 in their last six games and have lost their last two games to Minnesota and Portland.

Earthquakes unable to move on in U.S. Open Cup

By Pearl Allison Lo

LOS ANGELES– The Southern California team advanced in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 as the Los Angeles Football Club defended its turf 3-1 Thursday.

LAFC was 7-0-1 at home before this game and will move on to face the Portland Timbers (who shut out the Los Angeles Galaxy 4-0) in the Quarterfinals match July 10.

San Jose is now 0-4-0 all-time versus LAFC. However, for facing the number one team in MLS, the Quakes held their own, especially in the first half score wise, and scored their first goal at Banc of California Stadium.

LAFC’s Diego Rossi had a goal and an assist. Keeper Pablo Sisniega made eight saves and San Jose’s Andrew Tarbell six.

“The keeper made a couple great saves, and changed the game in that sense…they finished their chances and have that killer instinct,” remarked Quakes’ Captain Chris Wondolowski.

LAFC controlled the first third possession-wise, bur Vako picked up right where he left off in U.S. Open Cup Play, after scoring his second goal in the 91st minute versus Sacramento Republic Tuesday the previous week. Jackson Yueill found an opening for the ball to send it upfield to Cristian Espinoza, who passed to his left to Vako who was then able to score in front of his defender near Sisniega in the 7th minute. It was another statistical contribution in the tournament for Espinoza, who scored in the 38th minute last game.

In the 20th minute, Wondo had a header that went off Sisniega’s fingertips and into the net, but Wondo was offsides.

Rossi had a one-on-one battle near goal in which he and the home crowd thought he got fouled.

Rossi finally broke through the defense with a diagonal kick to tie the game up in the 35th minute. Lee Nguyen got the assist.

Latif Blessing narrowly missed in the 40th minute after it went off Tarbell’s fingers.

Vako and Rossi both led the first half with three shots apiece. San Jose had four shots on target compared to one for LAFC.

Rossi delivered the ball and Adama Diomande gave LAFC its first lead in the 60th minute when he sped to get around Tarbell, resulting in the goal.

Espinoza almost single-handedly took back the goal in the 63rd minute after a long pass, but was stifled by Sisniega.

Espinoza’s fifth shot attempt in the 76th minute left two Quakes sprawled in the grass.

Captain Carlos Vela then made his mark in front of an already hyped crowd. He maneuvered his way to the front of the net as Tarbell went the opposite direction in the 85th minute to make it 3-1. Tristan Blackmon was credited with the helper.

“We weren’t clinical enough,” noted Wondolowski, but also in reply to the 5-0 drubbing from their opponents on March 30, “we’re not scared of anyone anymore.”

Up Next: Vako led with six shots, followed by Espinoza’s five and Vela and Rossi with four apiece. San Jose will now travel back home for the regular season to play host for two games, starting with the Houston Dynamo Wednesday at 7:30 pm.

Earthquakes run away with 4-3 win over Sacramento Republic FC in fourth round of US Open Cup

By: Ana Kieu

The San Jose Earthquakes took on Sacramento Republic FC in the fourth round of the US Open Cup at Avaya Stadium on Tuesday night.

San Jose reportedly will treat the US Open Cup as a major trophy.

Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski told SJEarthquakes.com: “To be honest, it could be a preseason game … against anyone, we want to go out and win it … That’s our mentality right now. We want to win the Open Cup. We know it’s five games to win it. We feel that this tournament tests your depth and, even today, it shows where our depth is right now. We are one of the deepest teams I’ve been on.”

Well, it didn’t take long for the first goal of the match. Sam Werner opened the scoring in the second minute to give Sacramento a 1-0 lead.

It didn’t take long for San Jose to tie the match as Magnus Eriksson scored the game-tying goal in the 10th minute.

But San Jose’s lead turned out to be short-lived as Villyan Bijev scored the go-ahead goal to help Sacramento to a 2-1 lead in the 14th minute.

The scary moment happened in the 30th minute when Charalampos Chantzopoulos went down for a brief moment. Fortunately, Chantzopoulos was able to get up on his own and Sacramento got themselves a corner.

There was no fear in San Jose, who bounced back to tie the game once again. Cristian Espinoza leveled it from the spot for a 2-1 lead in the 38th minute. Espinoza capitalized on a penalty kick awarded to the Quakes.

The first half was quite eventful and the two teams went to halftime 2-2.

San Jose made their first substitution of the match in the 55th minute. Vako replaced Florian Jungwirth.

San Jose nearly got a goal in the 62nd minute, but Tommy Thompson’s rocket was unable to get into the net. Sacramento goalkeeper Josh Cohen made a noteworthy save to prevent a potential goal.

San Jose made their second substitution of the match in the 69th minute. Cade Cowell replaced Siam Haji.

Quakes fans breathed a sigh of relief when Stefano Bonomo’s kick went just wide of the net in the 71st minute. Still, Sacramento apparently bragged about their goalkeeper, which was a mind-boggler as San Jose grabbed a 3-2 lead in the 78th minute. Chris Wondolowski’s deflected shot hit the back of the net and Vako capitalized for the better.

San Jose made their third substitution of the match in the 81st minute. Jimmy Ockford replaced Eric Calvillo.

Vako earned his brace in stoppage time. Vako made it 4-2 San Jose in the 91st minute. However, Sacramento made it a one-goal game as Drew Skundrich scored in the 93rd minute, but they were unable to tie the game to force overtime.

The Quakes won 4-3. With the win, San Jose made it to the Round of 16.

Earthquakes and FC Dallas settle for 2-2 draw on Pride Day

By: London Marq

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes returned to Avaya Stadium after two road matches. After a rocky start, he Quakes have officially turned their season around and found a sense of consistency. Sitting in the middle of the Western Conference table entering play on Saturday afternoon, they would host FC Dallas on Pride Day presented by Wells Fargo.

The beginning of the match was not easy on the eyes for San Jose after a huge mistake from their goalie Daniel Vega. Vega should have received a routine pass from Florian Jungwirth. Instead he let the ball pass through his legs and over the goal line into the net. The own goal was assessed to Vega in the 27th minute.

After a demoralizing first half, Chris Wondolowski came back onto the pitch with a vengeance, scoring almost immediately after play resumed, bring the score even, 1-1. Magnus Eriksson would follow Wondo’s example, scoring just eight minutes later. Eriksson was particularly effective in this match, as he also assisted Wondolwski’s goal. Eriksson’s goal gave the San Jose the lead for the first time, despite scoring all three goals of the match.

Despite Vega’s early blunder, San Jose looked to be the better team and on their way to three points. That all changed when Francis Atuahene subbed in for FC Dallas in the 64th minute. Playing on his birthday, he scored a goal 48 seconds after stepping on the pitch. Tying the game at 2-2, and the score would hold for the remainder of the match.

San Jose will feel that this match slipped away and all eyes will be on Vega, who has made mistakes earlier in the season as well. This was a golden opportunity for San Jose as Dallas was missing key players who are out with International Duty.  A bright spot for Dallas is that they we able to pick up a point despite being short-handed. Conversely, the silver lining for San Jose is that they know that if they can limit their mistakes, they can play well enough to get three points against playoff level opponents.

Final: San Jose vs. Dallas, 2-2 draw.

Up Next: San Jose play the Sacramento Republic in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 11th at 7:30 pm.

Earthquakes and DC United play to 1-1 draw

By: Ana Kieu

#WondoWatched was in full effect, but the San Jose Earthquakes and DC United played to a 1-1 draw at Audi Field on Saturday. Chris Wondolowski scored his 151st goal, but DC benefited more so, as they were back atop the MLS’ Eastern Conference as a result of the lowly draw.

The match was off to a good start as a Chris Wondolowski and Shea Salinas link-up play that just missed wide in the 13th minute grabbed the attention of the few Quakes fans in attendance. Danny Hoesen and Vako also tested DC United goalkeeper Bill Hamid in the 18th and 29th minutes, respectively.

The Quakes got on the board first, thanks to Wondo’s goal in the 37th minute. Wondo definitely proved the haters wrong as he didn’t necessarily need to be benched for what seemed like quite a while.

The Quakes led 1-0 at the end of the first half.

The Quakes were ready to rumble to start the second half. Quakes goalkeeper Daniel Vega impressed the masses with back-to-back saves in the 55th minute.

Check out one of Vega’s incredible saves below.

The Quakes’ first substitution occurred in the 72nd minute. Paul Marie went in for Mario Lopez.

The Quakes’ second substitution occurred in the 87th minute. Siad Haji went in for Shea Salinas. Haji added a little bit of pizzazz at the 95th minute, but unfortunately, the Somalian midfielder’s goal was ruled offside.

The Quakes settled for a 1-1 draw against DC United. With that said, San Jose snagged four points on the road trip, which was great to put it mildly.

The Quakes return home to Avaya Stadium to host FC Dallas on Saturday, June 8 at 12:30 pm.
