#1 San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is a scratch for today’s game in Green Bay as he is suffering a shoulder injury on throwing side. Purdy will miss his first game in three seasons as starting quarterback for the 49ers and didn’t miss a start when he was a quarterback in college.

#2 Las Vegas Raiders pass rusher Maxx Crosby who did not get a sack for the third straight week. To make matters worse Crosby was fined by the league for unsportsmanship like conduct and unnecessary roughness. Maxx was charged with kneeing, striking, and kicking Miami Dolphin players,.

#3 New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones requested a trade after being the starting quarterback after nine seasons. Jones is in a four year $160 million contract and has not performed at the level the Giants would expect: In ten games for the Giants Jones has completed 63% of his passes for 2970 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.

#4 Charlie turning to baseball news, former San Francisco Giants bench coach Aylssa Nakken has left the Giants to become an assistant for player development for the Cleveland Guardians. Nakken was the first female coach in Major League Baseball history on Arp 12, 2022. Former Giants manager Gabe Kapler brought her on board as a coach and she was a huge inspiration for girls and women softball and baseball players alike. Nakken will join former Giant coaches Craig Albernaz and Kai Correa. Albernaz is associate manager and Correa is a field coordinator. Former Giants catcher Stephen Vogt who is the Cleveland Guardians was mainly responsible for bringing Nakken on board.

#5 The MLB Baseball Writers Association of America have voted Shohei Ohtani the National League MVP and Aaron Judge the American League MVP. Ohtani win the MVP Award for the third straight time. Judge led MLB hitters with 58 home runs, 144 RBIs, 133 walks, and hit .322. Both Ohtani and Judge were in the 2024 World Series.

#1 Former San Francisco Giant outfielder Derrick Hill has found a new home with the Miami Marlins. Hill joined the Marlins on Saturday. Hill was placed on waivers by the Giants on Friday. Hill didn’t stay in San Francisco very long he joined the Giants on July 23rd going 3 for 12 until his release on Friday. Hill played for the Texas Rangers and Giants in 21 games. Hill batted .255, with three home runs and seven RBIs.

#2 Giants starter Blake Snell three Major League Baseball’s third no hitter of this season Friday night at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. The closest the Cincinnati Reds got to a hit was in the ninth inning when the Red Elly Del La Cruz hit a ball to right center in the gap that was chased down by right fielder Mike Yastrzemski that helped preserve the no hitter. Snell had a difficult start of the season does the no hitter pretty much mean he’s back on track.

#3 The St Louis Cardinals who were looking for a shot in the arm got one when they acquired outfielder Tommy Pham from the Chicago White Sox. In Pham’s first at bat since joining the Cards he got a standing ovation in his first at bat since returning to the team that first signed him in 2006. Pham said the ovation gave him goose bumps and that he’ll remember it the rest of his life. The Cards have won four of their last ten games are in second place in the NL Central and are five and half games out of first place.

#4 Charlie, your right about the New York Yankees Aaron Judge clubbed a 477 foot home run in the first inning of Friday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium. Judge collected his 41st home run of the season off Jays pitcher Jose Berrios. On Saturday in the second inning when Judge came up to the plate Jay’s manager John Schneider didn’t take any chances and walked Judge with the bases empty in his first at bat of the game. Yankees rained boos down on the Jays for walking

#5 According JMP Securities analyst Mitch Germain said that the Oakland A’s financing their share of the construction costs for the Las Vegas ballpark is in a holding pattern. Germain said the A’s have hit a roadblock. This has been going on for sometime that A’s owner John Fisher needs to come up with his share of the construction costs. Bally’s who just bought out Standard General’s share at $4.6 billion is going forward with their plans for a Casino and Hotel ballpark or no ballpark. But one thing for sure the A’s obligation for financing the park is in a holding pattern.

#1 Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora and the Red Sox are in negotiations for a contract extension that would give him an extra three years at $21.75 million. The Sox as of Tuesday are 54-46 and are one game back of the Kansas City Royals for the final wild card spot.

#2 Michael you cover the Milwaukee Brewers pretty closely and the Brewers have place Christian Yelich on the ten day IL due back inflammation. Yelich is schedule to see a specialist Thursday to figure out what to do next. Yelich’s back had been bothering him in recent weeks. You saw him at the All Star game but after the break is now on the IL.

#3 It’s been said that the New York Yankees Juan Soto and Aaron Judge are the best one two punch since Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. That said the Yankees have struggled and are 10-21 since the start of the season when the Yanks were 50-22.

#4 Turning to the NCAA you probably aren’t surprised that after realignment some schools would not be all too please. In the ACC, Commissioner Jim Phillips said he would fight lawsuits filed by Clemson and Florida State University. The lawsuits are over the schools withdrawal penalty and grant of rights and gets uglier as the NCAA has filed a countersuit. Phillips said the NCAA is fighting for the protection of league and it’s members and that both Clemson and FSU both signed off for the grant of rights.

#5 Tuesday the Cal Bears and Stanford Cardinal made their ACC Media Day appearances. Stanford football head coach Troy Taylor said that the Cardinal need to adapt quickly or they will not be relevant this upcoming season. Taylor as well as the ACC schools are trying to make the adjustment to the realignment and division switches that Taylor said was at first shocking to see such a traditional conference like the Pac 10 just suddenly go away.

#1 Philadelphia Phillies LHP Christopher Sanchez (7-4, ERA 2.96) will be replacing Atlanta Braves pitcher Chris Sale on the National League All Star roster. Sale is scheduled to pitch today and won’t pitch in the All Star Game in Arlington on Tuesday. With the addition of Sanchez that gives the Phillies eight all stars five of them pitchers a All Star record for most pitchers from one club.

#2 Not even Babe Ruth did it New York Yankees Aaron Judge belted his 34th home run the most home runs by a Yankees player before the All Star Break. Roger Maris who held the record for the most home runs in a season until being eclipsed by the St Louis Cardinals Mark McGwire hit 33 home run before the All Star break in 1961. So big achievement for Judge.

#3 The Detroit Tigers Gio Urshela hit a two run home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to help the Tigers make a comeback on the Los Angeles Dodgers at Comerica Park. The Tigers were down 9-4 in the ninth and tied it up 9-9 to force extra innings. With Urshela’s home run the Tigers came away with a 11-9 win.

#4 It was reported that the Pittsburgh Pirates Paul Skenes is disrupting the sportsbook with his success. One sportsbook had stopped betting on the possible National League Rookie of the Year. Skenes has been on a roll. Skenes was a 200-1 odds on long shot to win the Cy Young Award. Skenes is now in third place at a shot at winning the Cy Young behind the Phillies Zack Wheeler and the Braves Chris Sale. Skenes has also been named to the NL All Star team.

#5 Oakland A’s Spanish broadcaster Amaury Pi Gonzalez wrote that the A’s last home game ever in Oakland before moving to Sacramento next season could very well be a sell out. Amaury said that final home game on Thu Sep 26th at the Oakland Coliseum could see a capacity of 42,000 the fans last chance to say goodbye to the A’s as an Oakland team.

#6 Before we let you go we have to ask you about the announced retirement of A’s broadcaster Vince Cotroneo who has called A’s games since 2006 and will not work A’s games next season as the club plays it’s 2025 season in Sacramento.

#1 Charlie, who would expect the New York Yankees who had a season best 49-21 through June 12 now at a MLB worst at 6-15. The Yankees blew a three lead when the Boston Red Sox Masataka Yoshida hit a two run homer and Ceddanne Rafaela homered in the 10th inning to give the Sox a 5-3 win on Friday night.

#2 Charlie, you might recall when former Negro Leagues star Buck O’Neil said there were three times he heard that certain thwack off the bat and you knew from that sound that hitter was something special. The list Babe Ruth, Josh Gibson, and Bo Jackson. He might have added the Yankees Aaron Judge to list if he was here today.

#3 The New York Mets activated closer Edwin Diaz. Diaz was suspended after serving a ten day suspension for foreign substance abuse on his hands. Diaz at the time said it was sweat and rosin the umpires ruled it was a foreign substance and he thrown out of the game and later suspended.

#4 The Pittsburgh Pirates tied a franchise record hitting seven home runs defeating the New York Mets 14-2 on Friday night. The Pirates Bryan Reynolds and Rowdy Tellez became the first teammates to hit multiple home runs including a grand slam,. All of the Bucs runs came from the home run.

#5 Last week Nevada District Court Judge Kristin Luis ruled that the Oakland A’s are a private business and cannot get involved any lawsuit to stop Schools over Stadiums from their petition drive to stop Nevada State public money to pay for the Tropicana Park on the Las Vegas Strip. This would give Schools over Stadiums the green light to pursue getting the needed signatures from four districts in Nevada including Las Vegas for a ballot initiative to stop the use of public funds for the ballpark.

#1 The Detroit Pistons ownership made the decision to fire first year coach Monty Williams. After signing Williams to a seven year $78 million deal. The Pistons and Williams last season lost 28 games in a row an NBA record and finished with the worst record in the NBA at 14-68. The firing was ordered by ownership Tom Gores and Pistons vice chairman Trajan Langdon.

#2 Gates at Oracle Park in San Francisco opened at 12 noon PT on Thursday where the game between the St Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants was shown on the scoreboard at Rickwood Field in Birmingham that started at 4:05pm PT honoring the Negro Leagues and pay tribute to Willie Mays who passed away on Tuesday night.

#3 Jessica, X-Rays show negative as the New York Yankees Aaron Judge was hit by a 94.1 MPH fast ball on his left hand by Baltimore Orioles starter Albert Suarez on Tuesday night where the Yankees won it 4-2. Judge left the next inning X-Rays and a CT scan showed Judge was negative for fractures and returned to action on Thursday night.

#4 NHL Finals could have a change of pace. First the Florida Panthers took a 3-0 series lead then the Edmonton Oilers won game 4 defeating the Panthers 8-1 and in game 5 the Oilers won it 5-3 as the Panthers now ahead by one game 3-2. The Oilers can tie up the series Friday in Edmonton in game six.

#5 The Los Angeles Sparks forward Cameron Brink tore her ACL and will miss the rest of the WNBA season. Brink got the injury in the left knee against the Connecticut Sun. The Sparks announced the injury on Wednesday to the press. Brink was the No.2 selection in the 2024 draft. Brink had to stop because of the pain and was carried to the locker room.

It’s only Business -Why Aaron Judge decided to stay a Yankee

In 2022 Aaron Judge ended the season with the Yankees and broke the American League record for home runs in a season, a record of 61 in 1961 by Yankee Roger Maris. A record that lasted for 63 years. A couple of months after the season ended the Yankees signed Judge to a nine-year, $360 million deal breaking the record for the largest free agent deal in Major League Baseball at that time.

Next, Shohei Ohtani, after 6 years with the LA Angels, signed an incredible 10-year deal as a free agent worth $700 million with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and that by far is the largest ever. But back to Aaron Judge.

The Giants were reported to have offered Judge the same amount as he signed with his original team the New York Yankees for $360 million, around the same time that Judge was still searching for a new contract. But why did Aaron Judge signed with the Yankees and not the Giants?

This was a “pipe dream” for Giants to have signed a young man that followed the Giants as a kid, traveling with his parents from Linden to San Francisco (95 miles) to watch the Giants and his favorite player (not Barry Bonds) but shortstop Rich Aurilia, as he recently said.

Bay Area sportscaster Matt Steinmetz recently said that Judge not coming to the Giants was because he doesn’t want to have the pressure that Barry Bonds endured in San Francisco and that Judge was “gutless”.

Never in this world a player would feel more pressure playing in San Francisco than in Yankee Stadium. West Coast pressure is not remotely close to New York. In cities like New York, Boston, Philadelphia a player who hit three home runs in one game but strikes out on his last at bat, will get booed.

That, mis amigos, you do not see in San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, Anaheim or San Diego. My take on why the slugger from Linden (15 miles from Stockton) Aaron Judge signed with his original team the Yankees and not the Giants is very simple.

With all respect to the Giants, Aaron Judge plays for the #1 MLB franchise, the most historic, (27 World Series titles) the highest exposure level for an athlete is in New York, like Sinatra’s “New York New York” which has become the theme song for that city, “If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere”.

So Judge (probably his family and advisors) and in his wisdom figured that New York is where he made his fame, most recently with the new American League home run record, the potential for endorsements is greater in New York than in San Francisco, and probably believes that with the Yankees he also has more opportunities of postseason play. I do not believe it was a difficult decision for Aaron Judge.

It is understandable for Giants fans to be upset at Judge, when he went with the Yankees instead of the Giants. After I left the US Army I lived in New York City for a few years, prior to moving to California and I know the Yankee fans are not surprised he stayed in New York.

California is laid back, New York is cut throat, edge-of-your-seat stuff, super passion and pressure all the time. A totally different lifestyle. It is also understandable why the Giants made a serious attempt to sign the slugger, this is the type of player they still need in San Francisco, a real superstar, something they lack since the days of Barry Bonds and most recently Buster Posey.

The Giants need that type of star and presence in their lineup there is no doubt about it. Giants improved the team this off season,signing very good players, like Matt Chapman, Jorge Soler and Blake Snell, but there is no hitter like Aaron Judge.

It is the type of player that baseball fans will pay just to see take a swing Aaron Judge sells tickets, and what team doesn’t like to sell tickets? Of course Shohei Ohtani is the face of baseball today, but Judge is the “swing to see in baseball”. At the end, the truth remains, Aaron Judge still a Giant, he is 6’7 !

#1 Talk is the Gunnar Henderson is one of the big reasons why the Baltimore Orioles are a half game ahead just ahead of second place New York Yankees. Henderson hitting .279, 25 runs, 24 RBIs and ten home runs.

#2 Charlie, New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge was ejected for verbalizing his displeasure on being called out on a strike call by home plate umpire Ryan Blakney which Aaron disapproved of saying the pitch was outside and got tossed out for the first time in his career. What was surprising about it it was the first ejection for Judge in 869 games. Judge said he’s said worse things when he struck out so he was surprised when he got the heave ho.

#3 For the first time since March Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole threw off the mound as Cole shoots to get back on the hill. Cole had been suffering from a elbow injury. Cole came in hours before the Detroit Tigers and Yankees match at Yankee Stadium on Saturday at 10:40 AM. Cole said ” It was exciting, this was a good day for me. I was fired up.”

#4 The Giants lost four of their last five games they faced the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. The Phillies scored five runs in the first inning and four runs in the second and beat up on Giants pitching for a 14-3 laugher. Plus Giants catcher Patrick Bailey is on the 7 day IL after taking a ball off the mask on Friday. Giants back up catcher Tom Murphy has taken Bailey’s place.

#5 The Oakland A’s have been rolling they won their seventh straight game they crushed the Florida Marlins 20-4 on Saturday. The A’s have been getting clutch hitting and have been getting great relief pitching to close out games from closer Mason Miller.

#1 Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon who has played only not more than 58 in his last four seasons of his current seven year $245 million contract has a left hamstring tear and the recovery is expected to be a long one. Rendon is frustrated by the injury saying he’s doing everything to stay out there but says nothing is working.

#2 The Baltimore Orioles top prospect Jackson Holliday has been optioned to the Orioles minor triple A affiliate Nashville after managing just two singles, two walks in 36 at bats spread over ten games. Holliday struck out 18 times and was hitting .059 with just one RBI.

#3 The Orioles were just stunned when they were beat in the opening game of their three game series on Friday night by the Oakland A’s 3-2. The A’s had beat the New York Yankees Thursday. That showed shades of maybe Oakland might be up for challenging some of the tougher teams in the American League. Then on Saturday the Orioles got some clutch hitting and pitching shutting down Oakland 5-0.

#4 Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani who was greeted by a thunderous rain of boos at Rogers Centre in Toronto and did what he could only do hitting his seventh home run against the Toronto Blue Jays. Ohtani said he was not surprised and that he got booed in the dugout too. Dave Roberts Dodgers manager said that was funny too. Ohtani knew he was booed after deciding to sign with the Dodgers rather than the Blue Jays in the off season.

#5 Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge why the slump? Judge is hitting .186 with four home runs and the topper was the loss to the A’s on Thursday and Judge earned the golden sombrero with his fourth strike out. Judge said that he’s had worse starts than this one and that you just have to keep on working.

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Jerry, things just didn’t go right for the Oakland A’s at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night. Yankee slugger Aaron Judge hit a home run right after the A’s pitcher starter Joe Boyle was called for a balk.

#2 The Yankees further added to their total with home runs from Anthony Rizzo and Juan Soto. It was like Boyle was pitching to a complete All Star line up and couldn’t put anyone away.

#3 Boyle had been called for a quick pitch after after it looked like Judge had took strike three. Boyle was hit for the balk and Judge got another chance to take a swing which he did on the next pitch it was a home run.

#4 More bad news for the A’s their second baseman Zack Gelof had to be removed from the starting line up due to abdominal soreness . Gelof had an MRI which show a strained oblique and most likely Gelof is headed to the IL.

#5 Starting pitchers for Thursday’s A’s and Yankees battle in the fourth and final game of this series. For Oakland, Alex Wood (0-2 ERA 7.89) going for New York Nestor Cortez (1-1 ERA 3.41) first pitch 4:05pm PDT.
