#1 At 84 years old former Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox passed away on Saturday. Cox won more than 2500 games as manager and went into the Hall of Fame in 2014. Cox was ejected over hs career as manager 158 times MLB record for a manager. Cox led the Braves to 14 straight divison titles from 1991 to 2005. He led the Braves to a World Series title in 1995. Cox as a player played two seasons for the New York Yankees and hit just .255.

#2 Former Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks owner Ted Turner who passed away at age 87 this past week died at age 87 last Wednesday at his home in Tallahassee Florida as announced by a family spokesperson for Turner Enterprises. Turner was battling dementia and showed signs of having Parkinsons disease. Turner bought the Braves in 1976 and purchased the Hawks in 1977. In 1977 he created 24 all news cable station CNN. He sold the Braves and Hawks to Time Warner for $7.3 billion in stock in 1996. On May 11, 1977 Turner managed the Braves for just one game after previous manager Dave Bristol was fired. Then MLB Commissioner Bowie Kuhn ordered Turner to stop managing as owners are prohibited from managing. Turner was famouly married to actress Jane Fonda for ten years from 1991-2001.

#3 Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper left Saturday’s game against the Colorado Rockies due to a mirgrane headache. Harper had played in all of the Phillies 40 games so far this season was replaced by after fielding a ground out hit by the Rockies Mickey Moniak for an unassisted out. Harper was hitting .282 with nine home runs and 23 RBIs.

#4 Former San Francisco Giants catcher and current Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt is ready to help former Giants catcher Patrick Bailey get his swing back after Bailey was dealt to Cleveland on Saturday. Bailey was struggling at the plate hitting just .146, with one home run, five RBIs and 12 hits. Cleveland genreal manager Chris Antonetti said that the Guardians had an interest in Bailey for some time and the opportunity came up this week. Vogt whose worked with players and brought their game up is confident he can do the same with Bailey.

#5 The Sacramento A’s are starting to get some notice as they’ve been consistenly winning. The A’s have won six of their last ten games and were on a three game winning streak through Saturday night. The A’s were leading the second place Seattle Mariners in the AL West by 2 games and they were getting key hits from their line up of Nick Kurtz, Shea Langeliers, Brent Rooker and Carlos Cortes to name a few.

#1 Former San Francisco Giants catcher Patrick Bailey was traded to the Cleveland Guardians for the 29th overall draft pick in the MLB draft Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson. Tugboat is a 250 pound left hander. Is it going take a little time for the Giants to promotes Tugboat or do you see them calling up Tugboat sooner than later.

#2 Was the primary reason for trading Bailey that he was hitting .146 and was his offense hurting the club?

#3 Critics of the trade say he is a great defensive catcher and his tools of ignorance skills helped espeically working with the pitchers.

#4 The Giants are now currently carrying three catchers Logan Porter, Jesus Rodriguez, and Eric Haase. How soon will they be ready to getting used to working with with the Giants starting pitchers and bullpen?

#5 Taking a look at Sunday’s starting pitchers for the Pirates RHP Buba Chandler (1-4 ERA 4.76) for the Giants RHP Tyler Mahle (1-4 ERA 5.00) with a 1:05pm PDT first pitch.

#1 Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal got some relief after he had to leave Friday’s game against the Miami Marlins. Skubal took an exam and did not suffer any structural damage after feeling tightness in his left side. Skubal was cleared to pitch in his next start on Monday.

#2 The wait is over the Milwaukee Brewers became the first big league club to clinch for the post season. When the New York Mets lost on Friday to the Texas Rangers 3-2 that got a post season spot in the bag for the Brewers. Deservedly the Brewers have the best record in the majors so they get the first invitation to the playoffs.

#3 Anthony Rizzo the former Chicago Cubs first baseman who played with that Cubs team that won the World Series a decade ago and making it the first Cubs team to win a World Series after 108 years announced his retirement at age 36. Rizzo had suffered a broken arm last season and had been contemplating retirement. Rizzo after speaking to his parents and wife says he will hang it up this season.

#4 Big moment for New York Yankee great Aaron Judge who hit his 362nd career home run against the Boston Red Sox on Friday night to over take former Yankee outfielder Joe DiMaggio and move into fourth place on the all time Yankees home run list for home runs as the Yankees win 4-1.

#5 The San Francisco Giants Patrick Bailey’s walk off grand slam home run won it 5-1 Friday night and placed them into third place in the NL Wild Card race with a win over one of the top contenders for the NL Division Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers would be the Giants opponents in a Wild Card if the season were ending today.

#1 Texas Rangers Two time All Star starter RHP Nathan Eovaldi became a free agent on Monday. Eovaldi declined a vested $20 million player option with the Rangers for next season. Eovaldi will get a $2 million buyout. In 2023 Eovaldi pitched in the deciding game that landed the Rangers the World Series Championship. Eovaldi was 5-0 with a 2.85 ERA in the 2023 post season.

# 2 New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole was prepared to leave after asking for a $36 million extension that would raise his contract from $140 million to $180 million. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and Cole sat down and hashed things out. It was agreed upon that both sides wanted to stay in New York so it was agreed that there would be no extension raise and Cole would finish out his current contract as a Yankee.

#3 Amaury, 13 players are getting qualifying offers which includes the Yankees Juan Soto as free agency began on Monday. Soto hit .288, 166 hits, 41 homers, and 109 RBIs. No doubt Soto will be well sought after if he ever hits the market but like Cole he might want to stay in New York too.

#4 Two San Francisco Giants were awarded the Golden Glove Awards third baseman Matt Chapman and catcher Patrick Bailey both had a superb season at their respective positions.

#5 The former Oakland Athletics released brand new guidelines and saying they will be referred to as the Athletics or A’s not the Sacramento A’s where they will be playing for the next three years at Sutter Health Park. The A’s are foregoing any mention of Sacramento and do not want fans to be confused with any city name because they have already vacated Oakland and eventually will vacate Sacramento in 2028.

#1 Talk is the Gunnar Henderson is one of the big reasons why the Baltimore Orioles are a half game ahead just ahead of second place New York Yankees. Henderson hitting .279, 25 runs, 24 RBIs and ten home runs.

#2 Charlie, New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge was ejected for verbalizing his displeasure on being called out on a strike call by home plate umpire Ryan Blakney which Aaron disapproved of saying the pitch was outside and got tossed out for the first time in his career. What was surprising about it it was the first ejection for Judge in 869 games. Judge said he’s said worse things when he struck out so he was surprised when he got the heave ho.

#3 For the first time since March Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole threw off the mound as Cole shoots to get back on the hill. Cole had been suffering from a elbow injury. Cole came in hours before the Detroit Tigers and Yankees match at Yankee Stadium on Saturday at 10:40 AM. Cole said ” It was exciting, this was a good day for me. I was fired up.”

#4 The Giants lost four of their last five games they faced the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. The Phillies scored five runs in the first inning and four runs in the second and beat up on Giants pitching for a 14-3 laugher. Plus Giants catcher Patrick Bailey is on the 7 day IL after taking a ball off the mask on Friday. Giants back up catcher Tom Murphy has taken Bailey’s place.

#5 The Oakland A’s have been rolling they won their seventh straight game they crushed the Florida Marlins 20-4 on Saturday. The A’s have been getting clutch hitting and have been getting great relief pitching to close out games from closer Mason Miller.

Bailey With A 3-Run Walk Off Gives San Francisco Giants A 3-0 Win Against The Pittsburgh Pirates

Fresh from a rare home off day in the middle of a homestand, the  San Francisco Giants have reached the final series of their longest homestand of the year as they welcome in the Pittsburgh Pirates for three games beginning Friday night.

For San Francisco pitcher Kyle Harrison took the hill for his sixth start of the season pitched a gem shutting out the Pirates in a 3-0 win in front of a crowd of 37,110 at Oracle Park. Improved from his shortest outing of the season (4.0ip) vs. Arizona last Saturday.

Harrison facing the Pirates for the first time in his career…not one player on the Pirates has logged a plate appearance against Harrison in the regular season. Quinn Priester (0-1, 8.31) started for Pittsburgh pitching six innings no runs, three hits and seven strikeouts.

Harrison went six innings, five innings, seven strikeouts and no runs. Preister also went six innings, three innings, one walk, six strikeouts, and no runs as well. 

For the duration of the game, it was a scoreless game with at various times both teams scaring the pitchers, but to no avail. 

Pittsburgh had the bases loaded in both the seventh and ninth innings, but could not score. Brian Reynolds hit into a double play against Giants closer Camilo Doval (2-0) with the bases full and one out in the ninth. 

In the ninth Michael Conforto walked and Matt Chapman singled to begin the inning off reliever David Bednar (1-2). Bailey then knocked a 3-run homer to right field. 3-0 Giants win!!! “One thing this year I tried to build was just my confidence at the plate,” Bailey said. “I felt like I proved to myself last year that I could do it at this level, even with the struggles at the end. So that was my biggest thing this year was just going up confident every time no matter what.” Time of game was 2:23.

Next game for this series is Saturday night at 6:05pm PDT April 27th. Jordan Hicks (2-0, 1.61 ERA) was set to pitch for the Giants in the second game of the series against Martín Pérez (1-1, 3.45 ERA).

#3 The Giants in this Arizona Series saw Logan Webb retire 19 hitters in a row in a 5-0 shutout on Thursday. The Diamondbacks clobbered the Giants 17-1 on Friday night behind the first time pitching appearance of the Diamondbacks Jordan Montgomery. On Saturday the Giants Patrick Bailey went 4-4 with a home run and Jung Hoo Lee extended his 11 game hit streak.

SAN FRANCISCO–The San Francisco Giants bounced back with a 7-3 win this afternoon in a quick turnaround after last night’s 17-1 defeat at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks. San Francisco is in the midst of its longest homestand of the season with this 10-game stint…after the Diamondbacks depart Oracle Park following Sunday’s game, the Giants will host the New York Mets for a three game series Monday-Wednesday and the Pittsburgh Pirates for three Friday-Sunday. 

Jung Hoo Lee entered Saturday’s game with a ten game hitting streak still intact following his day off Friday. Lee picked up two hits to extend his hit streak to 11 hits. Lee is slashing .349/.378/.395 with two doubles, an RBI, two walks, two steals and eight runs in that stretch (since April 7). On the mound Saturday was duel between Kyle Harrison for the Giants who went four innings giving up six hits and three runs and Zac Gallen for Arizona who went five innings, nine hits and five runs.

Game recap: Christian Walker got the D-Backs on the board first with an RBI single, 1-0. The Giants took a lead the same inning thanks to a Jung Hoo Lee home run and a Wilmer Flores sac fly that scored Lamonte Wade Jr., 2-1 SF.  Patrick Bailey on his bobblehead day, doubled to center, and scored Wade Jr. 3-1 SF. The Diamondbacks tied it up after Blaze Alexander and Kevin Newman got RBIs, 3-3. 

Bailey had a 4-4 day, but the big moment on his day, hit a two run homer, 5-3 SF. He also had a ground rule double. Lee got an RBI double to add to his streak to 11 games and Michael Conforto hit a single that gave the Giants a 7-3 lead and after Doval came in to close, the game was over and the Giants now hold the series lead. 7-3 SF wins.

Final game in the series is Sunday April 21st and on the mound for the Giants is Jordan Hicks (2-0, 1.57). For the Diamondbacks on the mound is Merrill Kelly (2-0, 2.19) 1:05pm PDT.

#1 The San Diego Padres Jake Cronenworth hit a two run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the San Francisco Giants at Petco Park 6-4 on opening day on Thursday.

#2 Michael the loss spoils Giants manager Bob Melvin’s return to San Diego and the Padres had to come back from behind to overtake Melvin and the Giants.

#3 The Giants Jung Hoo Lee hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh in Lee’s first big league hit. Melvin is expecting big things out of Lee this season.

#4 Giants starter Logan Webb pitched six innings, gave up two earned runs and five hits and struck out five batters. Webb wanted to give a little more but battled in this one today.

#5 Giants try it again for game two of the series at Petco Park. San Francisco starting pitcher Kyle Harrison a left hander going up against the Padres right hander Joe Musgrove. Michael talk about this match up and can the Giants even the series on Friday night?

Giants shutout by Dodgers 7-0

The San Francisco Giants played their third game with the rival Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night. The Giants were shutout by the Dodgers 7-0 at Dodger Stadium. San Francisco fell to 77-78, while Los Angeles improved to 95-59.

The Giants’ starting lineup featured Austin Slater, Thairo Estrada, J.D. Davis, Wilmer Flores, Mitch Haniger, Marco Luciano, Luis Matos, Tyler Fitzgerald, Patrick Bailey, and John Brebbia. Brebbia (3-2, 3.53 ERA) took the loss after pitching just 1 1/3 innings and giving up one hit, one earned run, one walk, one strikeout, and one home run.

After a scoreless first inning, Los Angeles got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. J.D. Martinez homered on a fly ball to center field for a 1-0 lead.

The Dodgers tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third inning. J.D. Martinez doubled on a line drive to Luis Matos. Mookie Betts and Max Muncy scored to make it a 3-0 game.

The Dodgers added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freddie Freeman doubled on a line drive to Luis Matos. Austin Barnes scored to extend the Dodgers’ lead to 4-0 as Mookie Betts went to third base. Max Muncy then singled on a fly ball to Tyler Fitzgerald. Betts scored to expand the Dodgers’ lead to 5-0 as Freeman went to third base.

The Dodgers got two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Mookie Betts doubled on a line drive to Mike Yastrzemski. David Peralta and Austin Barnes scored to widen the Dodgers’ lead to 7-0.

The Giants recalled Heliot Ramos from Triple-A Sacramento after placing Scott Alexander on the 15-day injured list with a left hamstring strain — retroactive to September 22.

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, we remember on this day in 1956, Ozzie Virgil Sr. made his MLB debut as the league’s first player from the Dominican Republic. Virgil Sr. played in the MLB from 1956 to 1969 as a utilityman. Three of Virgil Sr.’s stints were with the New York/San Francisco Giants (1956-57, 1966, and 1969).
