NHL Stanley Cup Finals podcast Ryan Hannagan: Canes tie series 2-2 with 5-3 win; Game 5 headed back to Carolina

Carolina Hurricane center Jordan Staal (right) celebrates his first period goal against the Vegas Golden Knights in game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals at T Mobile Center in Las Vegas on Tue Jun 9, 2026 (AP News photo)

NHL Finals podcast Ryan Hannagan:

#1 The Carolina Hurricanes Jordan Staal scored his second goal of game four at 6:32 that helped put away the Vegas Golden Knights in the third period at the T Mobile Center in Las Vegas tying the series up at 2-2.

#2 Next up is Game 5 in Carolina and that could very well give the Hurricane two games on home ice. If the Canes were to win it would be their first Cup in 20 years. If the Knights were to win it would be their second in four years.

#3 Of the four games this was the first game that was not decided by one goal. In the four games the two goal lead was erased.

#4 This is a series that has had incredible momentum with the Canes winning in Vegas going into game five at home this series could very well fall into their favor.

#5 Lots of goals in this series the 33 goals in the first four games of the series is third for the most goals in a NHL Finals.

Leon Draisaitl (29) celebrates the game winning goal for the Edmonton Oilers in the first overtime of game 4 of the NHL Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers in Sunrise FL (AP News photo)

On the NHL Stanley Cup Finals podcast Len Shapiro:

#1 In the first 20 minutes the Edmonton Oilers were behind the Florida Panthers by three goals in the next 20 minutes the Oilers made up for lost time and tied up the game 3-3. Talk about the shots.

#2 The Oilers would take the lead but gave up the tying goal to the Panthers in the last few seconds of regulation that forced overtime with the score at 4-4. You saw four consecutive goals.

#3 Leon Drasaitl once again was the hero of the contest in game 4 scoring the game winning goal in overtime 5-4 on Thursday night. It was Draisaitl’s fourth overtime goal a NHL record.

#4 Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said that games like this were exhausting, “Two good teams playing as hard as they are, playing the right way. Obviously with what’s on the line, it’s stressful. There’s a lot on the line, but it is fun and I think our guys are having fun, enjoying this moment.”

#5 Game 5 will be back in Edmonton at Rogers Arena Saturday night at 5:00pm PDT. The Oilers will have home ice and could go up 3-2 on the other hand the Panthers could go up 3-2. It’s an evenly matched final.

#1 Charlie, this has been the year of the rookie in the WNBA and the league has never seen such coverage of their players starting with the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese who both have everyone even those who don’t follow the league that closely talking.

#2 The NHL Stanley Cup Finals could see it’s first team since the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs come back down 0-3 and win it with four straight win if the Edmonton Oilers can pull it off on Monday night in Florida in game 7 against the Florida Panthers. The task would not only be historic but it’s a tall order if the Oilers can pull it off on Panthers ice.

#3 Charlie, the FBI raid on Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao is just an added sad chapter to what is happening to Oakland as a city. Thao’s last interaction with the relocating Oakland A’s who leave after this season for Sacramento was when she and the Oakland Coliseum Joint Authority wanted $92 million for the A’s to play their remaining three years before they move to Las Vegas and Thao and the Coliseum ran the A’s away with the high rent ticket. When it rains it pours for the A’s and City of Oakland situation.

#4 Their known as the lovable losers the Chicago Cubs who had some success are back on hard times dead last in the National League East eight games back, four games below .500, the Cubs have lost six of their last ten games and open a four game series in San Francisco on Monday night. How has the Cubs demise surprised you?

#5 Three time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer will make his 2024 debut for the Texas Rangers today against the Kansas City Royals. Scherzer hasn’t pitched in a game since game 3 of last year’s World Series. In the off season he had to have lower back surgery, in rehab he had thumb soreness which doctors determined it was nerve issues that extended into his right triceps.

#1 The Montreal Canadiens to start off game 2 of the Finals hung with the Tampa Bay Lightning in a 0-0 first period to start the game off.

#2 The Lightning’s Blake Coleman scored an amazing diving goal with one arm as the time ran off the clock it goes to show you how potent this team is.

#3 The Lightning’s goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 42 shots which marks a career high and allowed only one goal. With Vasilevskiy playing like this it will be almost impossible to beat him to get one past him.

#4 What was so ironic about the contest the Canadiens outshot the Lightning 43-23 and actually dominated some of the play against the Lightning but it was finding the back of the net that costed the Habs now down 2-0 going back to Montreal.

#5 Game 3 on Friday night in Montreal the Lightning have the hot hand and momentum they have a loaded line up on offense with players like Anthony Cirelli, Barclay Goodrow, Ondrej Palat, and Nikita Kucherov. Do the Canadiens even have a chance on home ice against the Lighting?

#3 Matt talks about St. Louis goaltender Jordan Binnington. While he had a rough Game 3 in which the Bruins beat up on the Blues 7-2, Binnington had two great back-to-back games in Games 4 and 5.

#4 The Bruins are just one game down 3-2 in the series. Do the Bruins feel they’ve got their backs to the wall in an elimination game in St. Louis in Game 6 on Sunday night?
