Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: Are Raiders still shook over loses of Ruggs and Arnette?; Las Vegas goes to Dallas with three game loss streak Thursday night

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Rich Bisaccia yells instruction to the his players during Sun Nov 21, 2021 game against the visiting Cincinnati Bengals at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria:

After the Las Vegas Raiders (5-5) winning two straight games going to back on Oct 17th and 24th vs. the Denver Broncos (5-5) and Philadelphia Eagles (5-6). Then there was the bye week of Oct 31st when Henry Ruggs III was arrested for DUI by death and Damon Arnette who posted a video of himself with a automatic weapon with a scope saying he was going kill a someone.

After the loss of those two players the Raiders are currently in a three game losing streak with loses to the New York Giants (3-7), Kansas City Chiefs (7-4) and the Cincinnati Bengals (6-4). You had to wonder if the team fundamentally is off track or still shell shocked from the loses of Ruggs and Arnette.

The Raiders host the Dallas Cowboys (7-3) Thursday night for a Thanksgiving contest. The Cowboys are going well they have won seven of their last nine games and lost their most recent game against the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday 19-9. The Cowboys scores were just three field goals and Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was off throwing 28-43 for 216 yards, no touchdowns and two picks. Tony tells us how he sees this match up on Turkey night.

Florida Sunshine Unkind: Hot-shooting Gators race past Cal, 80-60

By Morris Phillips

The Cal Bears desperately needed to make it to halftime within striking distance with an opportunity to regroup. But the hot shooting Florida Gators wouldn’t let it happen.

No. 23 Florida closed the first half on an extended 33-12 run that saw them turn a two-point deficit into a 19-point halftime lead. The Gators cruised from there, winning 80-60 at the Fort Myers Tip-Off at Suncoast Credit Union Arena.

“Credit the guys, not the adjustments,” Florida coach Mike White said. “I thought our energy level picked up.”

“We just got overwhelmed the last eight minutes of the first half,” coach Mark Fox said. “They’re an excellent team, but we’re certainly very disappointed in how we played.”

The Bears needed a credible shooting performance and some measure of a grasp on their opponent’s explosive offense, but they got neither. The Gators made 54 percent of their threes and 14 of 15 free throw attempts before halftime. Offensively, the Bears struggled with Florida’s quickness that made passing lanes disappear soon after they opened.

Jordan Shepherd, Cal’s leading scorer was limited to 15 points in 28 minutes on the floor, and Andre Kelly, coming off a 29-point, 15-rebound effort against San Diego, was limited to four shot attempts, and finished with nine.

“We didn’t get the ball entered as cleanly as we would like to,” Fox admitted.

The Bears committed 18 turnovers, and shot 41 percent in the first half when the game was decided. If shooting threes was the Bears’ method to stay close it never materialized. They attempted just four, and made one before the half.

Colin Castleton, the UF spindly big man, led the Gators with 16 points, eight rebounds. Tyree Appleby had 15, with a perfect performance from the line (7 for 7). Myreon Jones added 13, and Phlandrous Fleming Jr. had 11 off the bench.

“He created those shots,” White said of Castleton. “Outside of him, being prolific on the block, I do think we shared and moved it pretty well.”

The Bears got eight points from Lars Thiemann, and seven from Jalen Celestine, with both players coming off the Cal bench.

These two schools with big-time graduate journalism programs aren’t big on visiting the other’s campus. It’s never happened. This meeting was the third in the series, and all three have taken place in neutral buildings around the holidays. Cal won both previous meetings at the 1986 Rainbow Shootout in Honolulu, and the 1988 Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage.

Cal concludes its Florida swing with a meeting with Seton Hall on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. The No. 21 Pirates lost the tournament opener, 79-76 to unranked Ohio State.

Gentry loses first game at the helm Kings bow to Sixers 102-94; Sac loses 8th out of last 9

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings (6-12) were back in action on Monday night. The Kings, fresh off the dismissal of head coach Luke Walton were set to take on the Philadelphia 76ers (10-8). In case you missed the news, the Kings fired head coach Luke Walton on Sunday. After careful consideration, Kings GM Monte Mcnair decided to fire the coach of the Kings after two-plus seasons at the helm. Walton had a turbulent tenure in Sacramento.

Former Kings GM Vlade Divac hired Walton to replace Dave Joerger in a surprise move two seasons ago. With current GM Monte McNair in place, you had to feel it almost inevitable that the Kings would make a head coaching change. Especially with the Kings struggling.

Alvin Gentry replaced Luke Walton as interim head coach. The transition should be simple for Gentry as he was already on the Kings bench as an assistant and is a veteran head coach in the NBA. On Monday night, the Kings succumbed to the 76ers 102-94 at home.

Monday Night Recap: The Kings welcomed the Philadelphia 76ers into Golden One Center on Monday at 7 PM PST.In the first half, the Kings and 76ers went back and forth. Neither team delivered a dominant performance in the first half of play.

The Kings shot 43.6% from the field in the first half as they tallied a 33.3% from deep. The 76ers shot 45.5% from the field and managed 37.5% from behind the arc. The 7ers shot slightly better than the Kings, but it wasn’t enough to pull away much from the Kings.

The Kings were outscored by the 76ers 55-52 in the first half as they played their first game in recent memory without Luke Walton. The Kings would have some work to do in the second half if they wanted to take down the 76ers.

Buddy Hield led the way for the Kings in the first half, who scored 16 points, 14 of which came in the first quarter. Tyrese Maxey scored 12 points in the first half to help put the 76ers in the lead going into the half.

In the second half, there was hope the Kings could come out with the victory. However, a win wasn’t in the cards for the Kings after the final buzzer sounded. Nevertheless, the Kings did put up a fight. The Kings hung tough until the last minutes of the game when the 76ers began to pull away.

The Kings outscored the 76ers in the third quarter 30-22 as the Kings mounted a rally. However, the Kings faltered down the stretch in the fourth quarter. The 76ers outscored the anemic Kings offense in the final quarter 25-12 to take home the victory 102-94.

It wasn’t a pretty ending for the Kings as they couldn’t make shots in the fourth quarter to save their lives. Another glaring weakness for the Kings late with the mismatch of Richaun Holmes and Andre Drummond.

Drummond amassed 23 rebounds in the game compared to Holmes, who had eight. Leading the way for the Kings in defeat was De’Aaron Fox, who scored 23 points on 7-15 shooting. Tyrese Maxey led the 76ers in scoring with 24 points on 8-22 shooting.

On Monday night, the Kings had a new head coach but the same old issues on the court. Only time will tell if the coaching change will improve the Kings in the long term. The Kings fell to 6-12 on the season.

Up Next: The Kings stay home to take on the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday at 7 PM PST in Sacramento.

Sharks Beat Hurricanes 2-1 in OT; Barabanov gets gamer in late stanza

San Jose Sharks left wing Alexander Barabanov (94) puts in the game winner against Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Antti Raanta (32) and and right wing Sebastian Aho (20) during overtime at SAP Center in San Jose on Mon Nov 22, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Mary Walsh

SAN JOSE– The San Jose Sharks defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 in overtime Monday. Kevin Labanc and Alexander Barabanov scored for San Jose and James Reimer made 22 saves for the win. Tony DeAngelo scored for Carolina and Antti Raanta made 25 saves in the loss.

The game looked like it might be the third this season in which the Sharks did not get a single power play. At the end of the second period, defenseman Erik Karlsson spoke to officials. That did not seem to make a difference, though the Sharks did finally get a call at the end of the third period.

On the lack of calls, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner said:

“We haven’t got a lot of power plays lately but we certainly deserved a few more tonight than zero. So, it’s frustrating, and I try to tell the players to let me do the talking to the refs and you guys just concentrate on the game.”

After the game, Sharks forward Kevin Labanc said: “It was a pretty tight game for the full 60. You know, they weren’t really giving us much we were creating chances and those are the games that you gotta find a way.”

Labanc was did not play Saturday, as he was serving a one-game suspension for a slew foot in last Thursday’s game. Monday, however, he was all business. Asked to talk about his performance and that of his team, he said: “We did our job tonight and it’s a good two points.”

In a scoreless and penalty-free first period, Carolina out-shot the Sharks 8-7, but the Sharks won 69% of the face-offs. Alexander Barabanov took a hard hit midway through the period but he did return for the second.

Tony DeAngelo scored for Carolina at 1:16 of the second period. His shot flew down the slot through some traffic and past Reimer on the stick side. Assists went to Teuvo Teravainen and Seth Jarvis.

The Hurricanes out-shot the Sharks again in the second 10-8, and the face-offs were even at 50%. The Hurricanes had one power play and the Sharks penalty kill allowed two shots.

Kevin Labanc tied the game at 3:54 of the third. Jasper Weatherby corralled the puck as it came out of a board battle and pushed it up to Labanc. Labanc carried it a little deeper before taking the shot and beating Raanta on the far side.

The Sharks out-shot the Hurricanes 8-5 in the third, and won 57% of the face-offs. The Sharks penalty kill allowed no shots to the Carolina power play in the third. Their own power play did not begin until 19:38 and bled into overtime.

Alexander Barabanov scored for San Jose 1:42 into overtime, just after the Sharks power play ended. Tomas Hertl took two quick shots at the net from in close, before sneaking the puck under the goaltender, across the crease to Barabanov. Barabanov had a clear shot and he took it. Assists went to Hertl and Mario Ferraro.

The Sharks had three shorts in the extra frame, and won both of the face-offs. The Hurricanes managed one short-handed shot in overtime.

Scott Reedy made his NHL debut in the absence of Jonathan Dahlen, who was injured in Saturday’s game. Reedy had two blocked shots in 10:56 time on ice.

The Sharks next play on Wednesday, against the Ottawa Senators at 7:30 PM PT.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris Phillips: Kelly the big difference in Cal’s win last Thursday; Bears face undefeated Gators in Florida tonight

The one to watch the Florida Gators forward Colin Castleton who led the Gators in scoring against Milwaukee Panthers on Thu Nov 18, 2021. The Cal Bears will need to step up the defense against Castleton and forward Tyree Appleby for tonight’s game vs. the Florida Gators in Meyers Fl (AP file photo)

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris there was no doubt that the Cal Bears (3-2) Andre Kelly was nothing short of impressive with his 29 points in taking to the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (1-4) 75-68 last Thu Nov 18 at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley.

#2 Morris, how important was it for Cal’s defense to shut down Southern Utah’s John Knight III over the final 3:41 of regulation play who lead both teams in scoring with 31 points.

#3 One of the other keys to the win was how the Cal defense held Knight scoreless in overtime for the first 9:32 keeping a guy like that out of range certainly lends to improving your chances of winning.

#4 Talk about matching Cal 6’7″ freshman Sam Alajiki to defend Knight it must have worked while Alajiki was on Knight Cal got a 8-0 run to cut the lead down to two during the second half.

#5 Next up for Cal is the mighty Florida Gators (4-0) this will be a contrast from the Thunderbirds that the Bears just finished playing. The Gators have some scorers like Colin Castleton and Tyree Appleby. The Bears will have to come at the Gators will some top ranked offense tonight.
