Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: Now Raiders need to push harder to get a playoff spot

Las Vegas Raiders place kicker Daniel Carlson (2) gets congratulations from teammates by Jermaine Eluemunor (72), AJ Cole (6) after booting a game winning 29 yard field goal against the Dallas Cowboys Thu Nov 25, 2021 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria:

#1 Tony, after losing three straight games it had to be a lot of weight off the Las Vegas Raiders (6-5) shoulders to get that Thanksgiving Day win against the Dallas Cowboys (7-4) 36-33.

#2 Tony, how much over the span of the three game losing streak did situations and departures of Henry Ruggs and Damon Arnette play into focusing on games for the team?

#3 On Thanksgiving Day going to Dallas after three straight loses critics didn’t give the Raiders much chances of winning but win they did they hung with them on on both sides of the ball for the whole game right down to kicker Daniel Carlson’s game winning field goal to win that game.

#4 For Raiders quarterback Derek Carr an afternoon of just staying in the pocket and getting rid of the ball and making his throws count going 24-39 for 373 yards, and one touchdown he really help guide that offense last Thursday.

#5 The Washington Football Team (5-6) had previously lost three straight games and then turned things around and have won three in a row they won their last game against the Seattle Seahawks (3-8) close as it may 17-15 does Washington pose a threat coming into Allegiant this Sunday against the Raiders how do you see this upcoming match up?

Kings Beat Clippers Despite Depleted Roster 124-115

Kings Beat Clippers Despite Depleted Roster 124-115

By Barbara Mason

Injury decimated the Sacramento King’s roster as they struggled mid-way through the first quarter in their game against the Los Angeles Clippers (11-11) but took the lead 29-21 and extended that lead at the half 62-52.

The Kings (9-14) are currently in eleventh place in the Western Conference. They have dropped their last two games losing to the Lakers 117-92 and prior to that losing to the Memphis Grizzlies 128-101. The Kings come up with a key win snapping a two game skid 124-115 at Staples Center in Los Angeles against the Clippers.

The Kings have experienced meltdowns in the second half of their last two games. In their last game against the Lakers they had a double digit lead mid-way through the third quarter and just couldn’t sustain it losing by 25 points.

Richaun Holmes and Alvin Gentry apologized to the fans for the miserable play. No excuses were made in the postgame presser. Holmes expressed how he felt hearing fans cheer for the Lakers. “You don’t want to hear nobody get chants on your own home floor,” he said. He wants to work hard to get better because as he said, the fans deserve better.

This season has been chaotic for Sacramento. Individually these players have a lot of talent but they are not playing as a cohesive unit and until they do wins will be few and far between.

Wednesday night they took on the Clippers at Staples Center. The Clippers are currently are in sixth place in the Western Conference. The Kings have a 8-14 record in the same conference. There are a number of badly needed players that were questionable for tonight’s game.

Harkless (knee), Marvin Bagley (illness), Harrison Barnes (foot) and Robert Woodard II (ankle) all determined out to start this game. Things just seem to be getting more and more discouraging for the Kings right now.

The Kings had the lead after the first quarter and really turned it on with three minutes left in the second quarter leading by 20 points. While they could not sustain that lead they were leading at the half 62-52. The Hornets had trimmed the Kings lead from 20 to 10 and in the second half Sacramento struggled in their past few games.

The Kings had a great start in the third quarter extending their lead to 75-57. Sacramento continued to play hard and by the end of the third quarter every single starter had shot in the double digits. The Kings now led 99-76 having won the first three quarters of this game.

With four minutes left in the fourth quarter the Kings held onto a significant lead 119-104. With a 1:30 left in the game the Clippers were making a final bid to win this game making up some ground and trailing 119-111.

The Kings fought through four quarters winning 124-115. De’Aaron Fox finished with 24 points with Terence Davis right behind him with 23 points. The Kings had proven that they could finish and in this game they were missing some of their key personnel.

The Kings will be taking on the Los Angeles Clippers again on Saturday December 4th in Sacramento. Tipoff is at 7:00 PM.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Major League Baseball officially in lockout; First work stoppage since 1994

Major League Baseball Officially in Lockout

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

At 12:00 AM (midnight) Thursday, December 2, 2021, owners lockout players after both sides failed to come to a contract of a new CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement). For the first time since 1994-1995 there is a Lockout in the game.

The best news is that this is happening early, with two-and-a half months before all 30 teams report to their respective training camps in Arizona and Florida. The 2022 season is scheduled to begin on March 31.

Without a new CBA, which is the negotiated accord that governs 99.9 % of the working relationships between MLB and MLBPA (players association), there is no baseball, there are no games, and transactions between teams are now frozen. During a lockout, free agency and trades of major league players are not allowed.

To make this clear: A strike is when the labor side (players and their union) puts a halt to operations, while a lockout is when management (owners) initiates the stoppage. In other words; a strike is when the players refuse to work while a lockout is when the owners refuse to permit the players to play. In this case, it is a lockout.

During the past three weeks, teams have spent close to $2 billion dollars in player signings. Max Scherzer, Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Robbie Gray, Byron Buxton, Kevin Gausman, and Javy Baez are among some of the players that have gotten new contracts with new teams between $100 million to $325.

By looking at these signings we would think the business of baseball is doing great. Owners do not pay these contracts, because they are “nice guys”, as blunt as it sounds, owners do not go into the baseball business to be nice, but to make money.

Because many of them want to win and want to hire the best talent available they make these investments. The MLB revenues have increased from less than $5 billion in 2005 to more than $10 billion, during the last pre-pandemic season.

I cannot believe this lockout could go into the 2022 season, but if that happens nobody should be shocked. There is too much at stake here for the game. Aside from this two protagonists (owners and players), there are many others that work in the game of baseball around the 30 major league cities in the country.

They all want stability in their lives, anxiety is considered a disorder and it is not pretty. Teams also like to plan for sponsors, ticket sales, promotions, many peoples livelihood depends on the business of baseball and the majority are not players or owners.

There are many things that both sides are and will have to negotiate for the next CBA contract (usually a contract of this sort last for 5 years). Below are just a few of those:

-Pitch clock (yes, to ‘speed-up’ the game) -Creation of a “salary floor” -Salary arbitration for players after two years, not the three currently. A quicker path to free agency. -Universal Designated Hitter -Revenue sharing (in 2021 a modified, Loan-based revenue sharing was adopted) And many other issues that will not take a week or two to come to an agreement, or maybe it will? We can only go from the previous record of these type of negotiations and it is not a pretty sight.

“Baseball is like a poker game. Nobody wants to quit when he’s losing; nobody wants you to quit when you’re ahead.” -Jackie Robinson.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel will be out of action for two weeks with a groin pull injury here he sits after the injury against the Minnesota Vikings on Sun Nov 28, 2021 at Levi Stadium (photo from ninerswire.usatoday.com)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 David, the San Francisco 49ers (6-5) have a good run going with a three game winning streak coming off a win last Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings (5-6) 34-26 at Levi Stadium but will the injuries of wide receiver Deebo Samuel and linebacker Fred Warner have an impact for this weekend’s game against the Seattle Seahawks (3-8) in Seattle?

#2 Dave talk about the job the 49ers defense did to hold back the Vikings allowing the Vikings to score only one touchdown in each of the first and second quarters and shut them out in the fourth quarter.

#3 49ers are in Seattle this Sunday against the struggling Seahawks who have lost three in a row. Their last loss coming Sun Dec 5 vs. the Washington Football Team 17-15. These days it’s been frustrating for Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson against Washington he threw 20-31, 247 yards, and two touchdowns. Dave, how do you see this match up this Sunday at Lumen Field?

San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh: It seems like Timo Time all the time lately

The San Jose Sharks Noah Gregor gets congratulations from teammates after scoring at 4:26 in the first period against the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center in Newark on Tue Nov 30, 2021 (AP News photo)

On the Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 The San Jose Sharks (12-9-1) Timo Meier continues to find the back end of the net. Meier on Sunday did all the scoring for the Sharks against the Chicago Blackhawks in their 2-0 win and on Tuesday night Meier lit the lamp twice with two goals of his own against the New Jersey Devils (9-7-4) in a three goal 5-2 win.

#2 The Sharks had a big rally in the second period scoring three goals that pretty broke it wide open for them against New Jersey.

#3 In goal goaltender James Reimer stopped 29 shots and allowed two goals and the Sharks have been getting plenty of defense from Reimer during this current road trip.

#4 Noah Gregor, Jacob Middleton and Erik Karlsson all three have been opening the doors up on offense for San Jose as well and scored a goal each on Tuesday night.

#5 There is a possibility that Thursday night’s game against the New York Islanders (5-10-2) could be postponed due to eight players that have Covid. The Islanders will make the announcement sometime today.

No King? No Kings Either: Promising start devolves into a 117-92 loss against the Lakers without LeBron

By Morris Phillips

SACRAMENTO–Alvin Gentry’s not settling for this.

The Kings’ hard earned double-digit, first half lead over the Lakers evaporated into a 25-point loss and the team’s interim coach was embarrassed.

Gentry’s been around: he was an assistant for the world champion Warriors, he’s led successful, playoff teams in New Orleans and Phoenix, and what he saw Tuesday hurt his eyes.

“They don’t deserve what they got tonight,” Gentry conceded. “As the coach of this team I want to apologize to every Kings’ fan out there.”

Worse than an embarrassed coach, the Kings had their two most recent outings as examples not to follow (loss at Memphis) or keep that blueprint (3OT win at the Lakers) and they couldn’t choose, mixing in each for one half of Tuesday’s roller-coaster.

In the first half, the Kings fought through screens defensively, controlled the glass, then backed it with 56 percent shooting and all the smart ball possession decisions they could muster. The result: a 59-50 lead at the half in which they led by as much as 13. Conversely, the Lakers looked slow, disinterested and leaderless without LeBron James, who was placed on COVID protocols earlier in the day.

But it turned out, the visitors, led by Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis and wild card Malik Monk were surreptitiously waiting for the Kings to fall flat, and they did just that in a third quarter that was so lopsided it could decide 90 percent of all NBA games.

That was the prelude to a 67-33 wipe out, a second half that enlivened every Lakers fan who walked into Golden 1 Center and left the Kings and their crowd spent.

“A team goes on a run, you punch back and if there is no punch back, you’ll get run out the gym like we did,” Richaun Holmes said.

Holmes was actually the only Sacramento player to lift his fists in the third. The undersized center who returned after missing the three, previous games made all three of his field goal attempts while his teammates were 1 for 15. The Lakers shot 58 percent and with the Kings flailing, they needed just seven minutes to pull even at 72. But their run was just beginning: with the Kings in the midst of a stretch where they missed 17 of 18 shots, the Lakers ended the third on a 15-2 run to lead 87-74.

“We weren’t giving the necessary effort to transition defense and with our pick-and-roll coverages,” Lakers coach Frank Vogel said. “Sometimes you have to let them hear about it.”

Davis had 10 of his team-best 25 in the third, and Russell Westbrook 11 of his 23. Monk came up with the 41-foot, buzzer beater to end the first half, then got nine more in the third, finishing with 22 points.

Holmes led all scorers with 27, missing just one of his attempts from the floor. Chimezie Metu was just as integral with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the absence of the injured, front court trio of Harrison Barnes, Marvin Bagley and Moe Harkless. But all four Sacramento guards had nights to forget.

De’Aaron Fox had 17 points, but his five assists and seven turnovers were telling. Buddy Hield missed six of his seven shots and finished with five points. Rookie Davion Mitchell was a demon defensively in the first 24 minutes, but he missed 11 of his 14 shots and turned it over three times. Tyrese Haliburton missed eight of his 10 shots and finished with six points.

Rookie Louis King, a significant name from the Kings’ summer league push, got his most significant NBA minutes to date by doing a bang up defensive job on Carmelo Anthony. But King too was fallible; he shot 1 for 6 and committed four fouls in 14 minutes on the floor.

The Kings get little time to regroup, they’ll travel to Los Angeles on Wednesday to face the Clippers.

Timo gets two goal game in Sharks 5-2 victory over Devils; Gregor opens game with first period goal

San Jose Sharks Timo Meier (center facing) is well received by teammates and Logan Couture (39) after scoring a second period goal against the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Arena in Newark NJ on Tue Nov 30, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jessica Kwong

NEWARK, NJ—The San Jose Sharks’ Timo Meier lead the way with two goals in a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Tuesday night to remain undefeated in their five-game road trip.

Noah Gregor, Jacob Middleton and Erik Karlsson each scored for San Jose, and James Reimer made 32 saves.

“It was a good game for us,’’ Sharks coach Bob Boughner said. “I thought that we got some contributions throughout the lineup, which was nice tonight, and some big goals, timely goals.”

Gregor scored the first goal at 4:26 in the first period, with Radim Simek and Marc-Edouard Vlasic assisting.

“Great goal and I know he got an assist, but I loved his details tonight,” Boughner said of Gregor. “An example at the end of the game when there were three or four minutes to go and he had to win a board battle, he was strong. He was strong on the ice and I thought he kept things simple. That’s a good line. I like that line.”

At 4:14, Middleton made his second goal of the season and extended the Sharks’ lead to 2-0.

“Especially after the start of the game we had in Chicago, we were looking to come out all cylinders firing,” Middleton said. “I think we did that in the first and we had an even better second.”

The Sharks established their dominance in the second period. Meier had a power play halfway through and Karlsson scored shortly after to boost the Sharks to 4-0.

In the third period, the Devils denied the Sharks a shutout, with Tomas Tatar scoring at 9:12 and Jesper Bratt scoring at 12:49 to cut San Jose’s lead to 4-2.

Meier made his second goal with three minutes left in the game to seal the Sharks’ victory.

The Sharks (12-9-1) have now won seven of 12 away games.

They next face the New York Islanders on Thursday at the new UBS Arena – but whether the game will be held remains up in the air as the Islanders suffered a Covid-19 outbreak and have postponed their last two games.

A decision on whether the game will go forward will be made by Wednesday morning, Sharks PR said after Tuesday night’s game.

Suns Top Warriors In A Thriller 104-96; Phoenix forces 23 turnovers

Suns Top the Warriors In A Thriller 104-96

By Barbara Mason

In the absence of Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, Chris Paul and Jae Crowder picked up the slack to power the Suns to a brilliant win over the Golden State Warriors 104-96.

Tuesday night fans got to enjoy the two best shooting teams in the NBA today in a battle of the Titans; the Golden State Warriors (18-3) and the Phoenix Suns (18-3) in Phoenix.

The Suns got a quick start in the the first quarter of this game leading by a slim margin for most of the quarter. The Suns were hurting the Warriors inside but it was the three point shooting by Golden State that pushed them into the lead 35-31 after one quarter.

It was so impressive in the previous game against the Clippers when Steph Curry shot 13 points in the fourth quarter but it was equally exciting in this game with Jordan Poole shooting 16 points in the first quarter.

The quick start that the Warriors were looking for kept this game close and it would be a dog fight to the end. In the second quarter the pace really picked up and after leading by nine points the Warriors offense began to cool off. With less than one minutes left in the half the game was tied at 53. At the half the Suns had regained the lead 56-54.

The first half was a very frustrating one for Stephen Curry. The Suns had contained him relentlessly and you could see the annoyance etched all over his face. It was a disappointing game so far for Curry who was two of eight from downtown and only had eight points.

Jordan Poole finished the half with 18 points which really got the team going. Off the bench another great performance came from Otto Porter Jr bombing three’s, (he was four of six from Downtown) and scoring 12 points.

The bad news for the Suns was a hamstring strain suffered by the hot Devon Booker who would miss the second half. How much time he was going to miss was still to be determined by the severity of the injury.

The one thing that really stood out for the Warriors were the number of offensive rebounds they had. They just needed to get their rhythm back and avoid getting stagnant like they did in the final minutes of the first half. The turnovers as well had to be cleaned up.

The flow for the Suns was great compared to a stagnant and indecisive Warriors team. It was not the Warrior offense that we are used to seeing although it was good enough to remain within striking distance after three quarters trailing 80-78. Throughout the game the Suns were keeping the Warriors uncomfortable and off balance.

With under four minutes left the Warriors were in trouble trailing 99-92. The Warriors were shooting 42 percent and Curry still could not get going. The Warriors had 23 turnovers which drained the life out them. The Suns were executing a brilliant game plan. This was the first time this season that the Warriors were kept under a hundred points in a game.

The Suns did a tremendous job slowing the Warriors and forcing 23 turnovers. They contained Curry who finished with 13 point unable to get on track at all in this game. This was a heavy weight fight between two giants. While there were a number of things that hurt the Warriors the primary culprit was the turnovers. It’s very hard to win when you are constantly turning the ball over especially against a team like the Suns.

Friday night the Warriors will have another chance to level the score when they will again play the Suns and try to break this amazing winning streak that Phoenix has going. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 at Chase Center.
