Warriors Beat Phoenix By Double Digits 118-96

By Barbara Mason

The Golden State Warriors looked like a different team in tonights game against the Phoenix Suns. Gary Payton II and Juan Toscano-Anderson came off the bench and put this game away in an incredible showing by the entire team 118-96.

Friday night the Golden State Warriors (19-3) took on the Phoenix Suns (19-4) after having lost a close one in Phoenix Tuesday. That night the Warriors had their season lows in practically every category you could imagine.

Stephen Curry had a very frustrating game Tuesday night. We all know that Curry is an absolute student of the game and he has spent a lot of time these past few days watching game film from that Tuesday game. We also know that it is rare for Curry to have back to back disappointing games.

A lot of credit has to go to the Suns for a beautifully executed game that night but even when Golden State had open shots they were just not falling. The Warrior turnovers were horrific tuesday night with 22 and the Suns jumped all over those miscues.

In tonight’s game the Warriors have to protect the ball and stuff the three point shooting by the Suns. As expected the first quarter was a close one although the Warriors turned up the heat as the clock wound down leading 28-21. This was a great start for Golden State.

The Warriors kept up the pressure in the second quarter but was letting Deandre Ayton get loose which as we have all seen is a recipe for disaster. In the quarter Mikal Bridges had to leave the floor for the locker room with an apparent hand issue.

The Suns had already lost Devin Booker for this game and so this was of great concern to Phoenix. The three’s were falling for the Warriors and the tempo of this game was far different from last Tuesdays game. Curry was four of seven from downtown and the Warriors were shooting 51% but they were missing some great looks and fouling far too much.

The Suns were only shooting 37 % but they were in this game thanks to the 20 free throws that the Warriors threw their way. The 12 point lead that the Warriors had in the quarter was whittled to three points 51-48 at the half.

The Warriors extended their lead in the third quarter leading 8t0-68. This game was a far cry from last Tuesdays game. The turnovers were still there although not as plentiful and not sloppy. Curry already had 23 points and Wiggins was having a great game with 16 points. The Warriors had to hang on one more quarter to break the Suns winning streak.

Golden State kept the pressure on in the final quarter. The Warriors continued to put up double digit leads but the Suns had had the answer through three quarters fighting back to within striking distance. Every single Warrior was fighting for this game. It was raining three’s and the defense was extraordinary for Golden State.

When you see Chris Paul angry and rattled you know you’ve got a good thing going. The Warriors had pushed the lead to twenty and Golden State was going to end this incredible winning streak. The final was 118-96.

What an amazing bounce back game for Golden State. Eight players on the roster had shot at least one three and five of them had double digits for the game. In the last game the Suns held Curry to 25% on threes and in this game he was 6 of 11.

Everything that went wrong tuesday night went right tonight. Curry finished with 23, Wiggins with 19 and Poole had 14 points. Off the bench Juan Toscano-Anderson had a great game with 17 points and Gary Payton II had 19 points.

The Warriors will be back on the court tomorrow to take on the (7-13) San Antonio Spurs. Tipoff is 5:30 PM.

Rangers Shesterkin and Georgiev combine for 1-0 shutout against Sharks

New York Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin (31) gets a stick save on a shot by San Jose Sharks’ Mick Bonino (13) in the second period at Madison Square Garden in New York Fri Dec 3, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jessica Kwong

NEW YORK, N.Y.—The Sharks had their three-game road trip winning streak snapped at Madison Square Garden on Friday night after failing to get their offense going and losing 1-0 to the New York Rangers.

Rangers center Ryan Strome scored on a power play past Sharks goalie Adin Hill at 6:03 in the first period to give New York a 1-0 lead.

San Jose was unable to get past Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin in the first 48 minutes before he was injured and got off the ice with 14:52 to go in the third period. Shesterkin made 19 saves and his relief, Alexandar Georgiev, made nine saves.

Halfway through the third period, the Sharks had a power play on a penalty from New York’s K’Andre Miller. But Georgiev stopped Logan Couture from capitalizing on their best opportunity to score.

“I had a few good looks to score. Yeah, finish was lacking around the end. But I thought we moved the puck alright, could’ve been better though,” Couture said.

On the power play, the Sharks’ leading scorer TImo Meier said, “We didn’t do enough to get that goal to get inside on the net.”

Hill stopped 15 of 16 shots in the first two periods and finished with 26 saves.

“We gave ourselves a chance to win,” said Sharks coach Bob Boughner. “Like I said, we couldn’t find any offense and defensively we gave up a few chances at the end.”

San Jose was pursuing their first-ever sweep of teams in the New York area, after beating the New Jersey Devils 5-2 on Tuesday and the New York Islanders 2-1 in overtime on Thursday. Their road trip started with a 2-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Sharks (13-10-1) have lost for the second time in seven games and finish their road trip facing the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday at Nationwide Arena. The puck drops at 3 p.m.

“There’s still one game left and we either go 4-1 or 3-2 so it’s a good swing game for us,” Couture said. “I think tomorrow is an important day to get some rest. It feels like we’ve played a lot of games lately and I think a lot of guys are tired right now so we’ll get some rest tomorrow and regroup.”

Is it the coaching change, is it new plays, is it interim coach Alvin Gentry what’s been the difference?

#3 Jeremiah, talk about the offense of De’Aaron Fox who scored 24 points and Terrence Davis who came in second with 23 points on Wednesday night.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: Hill suspended one game for helmet flying punch of Simpson

Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Trysten Hill in yellow circle throws punch knocking Raider lineman John Simpson’s helmet off in a post game confrontation at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Sun Nov 28, 2021 (Larry Brown Sports photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 Rich, after losing three straight games do the Las Vegas Raiders (6-5) look as if they righted the ship somewhat with their close but 36-33 win over the Dallas Cowboys (7-4) last Thursday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington?

#2 Rich, Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Trysten Hill was been suspended for the next Cowboys game for throwing a punch a Raider lineman John Simpson but had his suspension reduced to just one game after appealing to the NFL. Hill sought out Simpson after the game going in the opposite direction of the Cowboys locker room and toward the Raiders tunnel side and confronted Simpson throwing a open hand punch in Simpson’s face mask. The NFL said this was deliberate behavior and the force of the punch knocked Simpson’s helmet off.

#3 It was reported that Hill had trouble coming out of college and he had problems with the Cowboys and no one is really surprised by this and the NFL needed to set a heavy handed deterrent when they originally suspended Hill for one game.

#4 The fight between Hill and Simpson broke protocols it’s an unwritten rule amongst players, coaches and personnel that they were there to shake hands and show good sportsmanship at the conclusion of each game and not to seek each one another out and cause a fracas.

#5 The Raiders host the Washington Football Team (5-6) on Sunday Dec 5th for a home game at Allegiant Stadium. Washington is coming off three straight wins after losing three straight games. In their last game Washington just got by the Seattle Seahawks 17-15. Seeing how Washington has improved lately how do you see this match up Sunday between Washington and Las Vegas.

Cal Bears football podcast with Daniel Dullum: Cal hopes for victory against USC to close out 2021 regular season

Cal Bears head coach Justin Wilcox (center) as seen in this Sat Oct 30, 2021 file photo against the Oregon State Beavers has prepared his team to face the USC Trojans for this Sat Dec 4, 2021 at Cal Memorial Stadium in Berkeley in the final game of the regular season (AP News file photo)

On the Cal Bears football podcast with Daniel:

#1 Daniel, things have been going well for the Cal Bears (4-7) they have won three of their last five games and have recovered nicely since they had that run with Covid with a little over half the team was on the Covid list and they took that tough loss to the Arizona Wildcats (1-11) back on 10-3.

#2 The Bears had a bye week and then met the Stanford Cardinal (3-9) and crushed them in their own Stadium on Sat Nov 20th 41-11 in the Big Game.

#3 Then there was the Bears last game last Sat Nov 27 at UCLA (8-4) where Cal got crushed 42-14, Bears quarterback Chase Garbers struggled to get throws in the end zone and the Cal offense were victims of three and outs.

#4 The Bears defense spent a lot of time on the field against the Bruins and that defense had a hard time trying to stop the Bruins from moving down field.

#5 So the Bears try and go back to the drawing board as they host the USC Trojans (4-7) in a make up game that was postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak on the Cal football team. The Trojans lost their last game in a narrow contest against BYU 35-31 at USC. Daniel how do you see the Bears and Trojans matching up this Saturday at Cal.

Bears In The Paint: Cal takes its case inside in 73-61 win over Oregon State

By Morris Phillips

BERKELEY, CA–Cal didn’t win the statistical battle in the painted area on Thursday night, but they showed up, and that really was the key to their eye-catching 73-61 victory over Oregon State in their Pac-12 opener.

Clinging to a one-point halftime lead, Cal open the second half with ten of the first 11 points, all scored in the paint, to take control of a close game. They would go on to lead by as many as 16 and win by 12, with Jordan Shepherd (25 points, eight rebounds) and Andre Kelly (20 points, 12 rebounds) leading the way.

“We were really ready to play,” coach Mark Fox said. “At the end of the night we won the game.”

The Bears being picked to finish last in conference, but finding a way to win their first Pac-12 outing is no doubt a story, but the Beavers dropping a seventh straight game may be more noteworthy. Oregon State was beat decisively on the glass, and couldn’t stop Cal’s top scorers while losing by double-digits for the third time in their seven-game skid.

The Bears outrebounded Oregon State 42-24, attempted 19 free throws, making 16 and scored 28 points in the paint. The Beavers tallied 40 points in the paint, but did little else well. Leading scorer Warith Alatishe had 21 points, eight rebounds, but his three fouls committed were painful. The first two of Alatishe’s fouls came late in the shot clock, and the third put Cal in the bonus too early in the second half, dooming a potential comeback by the visitors.

“We stayed composed,” Shepherd said, when asked about OSU’s late, modest run that brought them within 60-53 with 4:10 remaining.

Andre Kelly scored in double figures for the sixth time this season, and he’s shooting 67.5 percent from the floor. Kelly has double-digit rebounds in four of the eight games. In the second half Thursday, Kelly was six for seven as Cal shot 54 percent from the floor.

Oregon State missed 14 of its first 17 shots after halftime, and Cal closed it out by making nine of their 10 free throw attempts down the stretch. The Utes were limited to ten free throw attempts, making six.

Cal improved to 4-4 on the season, and they travel Salt Lake City on Sunday to face Utah Utes, beaten 93-73 by USC in their conference opener on Wednesday. The Utes have dropped two straight after a 5-0 start to their season. The Trojans saw four of their five starters score in double figures in the rout.

Sharks Karlsson scores OT goal to edge Isles 2-1: SJ’s third straight win

New York Islanders defensemen Andy Greene (4) and Noah Dobson (8) lay on the ice and block the shot by San Jose Sharks left wing Rudolfs Balcers (92) anyway they could as Sharks center Tomas Hertl (48) and left wing Alexander Barabanov (94) watch for where the puck went at the UBS Building in Elmont NY on Thu Dec 2, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jessica Kwong

ELMONT, N.Y.—It took just 39 seconds in overtime for Erik Karlsson to score and give the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 overtime win over the New York Islanders at the new UBS Arena. The Islanders suffered their ninth straight loss, while the Sharks celebrated their third straight victory on the road trip.

The Islanders got their fan base going when Mathew Barzal scored at 1:04 in the first period to take a 1-0 lead over the Sharks. But Nick Bonino answered back at 9:10 in the first period, assisted by Timo Meier and Jonathan Dahlen.

Both teams went scoreless in the second and third periods.

Karlsson gave the Sharks the win in overtime, assisted by Meier and Logan Couture. Karlsson earned his fifth goal of the season and improved to 3-0-0.

“Meier made a great play on the overtime winner,” San Jose Sharks head coach Bob Boughner said. “Our big guys that are putting the points up are guys we have to rely on every night and they delivered.”

Asked if he called for the puck in the 2-on-1 rush in overtime, Karlsson said he was screaming at Dean Morton because he did not call a penalty.

“I knew there was a chance Timo would find me,” Karlsson said. “He’s got some good vision going for himself right now. He made the perfect pass and I just had to tap it in.”

Sharks goalie Adin Hill in his first start since November 20 when the Sharks lost 4-0 to the Washington Capitals made 23 saves.

“We got it done,” Karlsson said. “It was a big win for us. Going into the game against the Rangers tomorrow is going to be an even tougher game.”

San Jose had a scary moment when forward Jonah Gadjovich took a shot to his leg by Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson. Gadjovich was down for a few minutes before he was helped off the rink and left 3:11 into the first period.

The Islanders are winless in the five games they’ve hosted so far at UBS Arena, their new $1.1 billion home adjacent to Belmont Park. They have lost eight straight games and called off some games, no thanks to several players contracting the coronavirus.

San Jose (13-9-1) continues their road trip facing the New York Rangers on Friday at Madison Square Garden. The puck drops at 4 p.m.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: WTA Suspends all Tournaments in China

Peng Shuai Chinese tennis superstar is seen here at the women’s singles match against Samantha Stosur of Australia on the second day at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London, on July 3, 2018. WTA Suspends all Tournaments in China

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

The Women’s Tennis Association is suspending all tournaments in China, including Hong Kong. The announcement was made by WTA Chairman and CEO Steve Simon. This decision comes after Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai alleged she was sexually assaulted by Zhang Gaoli, former Vice Premier of China.

This suspension of activities also includes Hong Kong, aside from China. After Peng made the announcement on social media the Chinese government deleted her post on the site Weibo and also her account. For weeks there has been concern for the safety of the Chinese tennis star.

Mr. Steve Simon said: “Unfortunately, the leadership in China has not addressed this very serious issue in any credible way. While we now know where Peng is, I have serious doubts that she is free, safe and not subject to censorship, coercion and intimidation,” Simon said in the statement. “The WTA has been clear on what is needed here, and we repeat our call for a full and transparent investigation – without censorship – into Peng Shuai’s sexual assault accusation.”

It is not clear how many tournament this suspension will affect but Simon said he is “greatly concerned” of the risks all players will face if they were to play in China.

The 2022 Winter Olympics are scheduled for Beijing, China on February 2. There is world pressure on companies to speak on defense of Peng Shuai and, at worst; the United States could boycott the Olympics.

According to the UN, Communist China continues to show disregard for human rights in many issues, including forced labor camps for minorities. It is believed that China as it was estimated that Chinese authorities may have detained up to 1.5 million people mostly groups of ethnic Muslims and Christians in internment camps.

The WTA (World Tennis Association) has shown a lot of balls in defense of this Chinese tennis star. So far no other sports league in the US has supported the WTA, who is picking principals over materialism, as they stand to lose a lot of money by this move.
