Sharks Fall to Blue Jackets 6-4, Give up Lead Twice

The San Jose Sharks fell 6-4 to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday. Columbus got goals from Sean Kuraly, Cole Sillinger, Jack Roslovic, Alexandre Texier and two from Adam Boqvist. Elvis Merzlikins made 30 saves for the win. Sharks goals came from Nick Bonino, Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns and Tomas Hertl. Adin Hill made 24 saves in the loss.

After the game, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner said: “I think that it was a tale of two games. I thought I liked our start even though we got out of period one 1-1. The second period, you know, we did some good things but we didn’t manage our game properly.” He went on in some detail:

“Mario fanned on the one, but then we’re all over them and we let them come back on the two-on-one goal. Roslovic got behind us, you know, break away. You know, just, dumb plays, and they come back to haunt you. Again, you score four goals on the road and you feel like you should come away with at least a point.”

Adam Boqvist scored the first goal for Columbus at 16:16 of the first period. Justin Danforth had the puck knocked off of his stick but it went across the ice to Boqvist in the opposite face-off circle. Hill got across to face the shot but it slipped by him. Danforth got the assist.

Nick Bonino tied it up for the Sharks with three seconds left in the period. Matt Nieto pushed the puck out from behind the net and Bonino jumped on it at the crease. Matt Nieto and Andrew Cogliano got the assists.

Erik Karlsson gave the Sharks a lead 21 seconds into the second period. Alexander Barabanov carried the puck out of the defensive zone and into the o-zone. He found Karlsson with a pass just as Karlsson crossed the blue line. Karlsson took the shot right away and beat Merzlikins. Barabanov got the assist.

Sean Kuraly tied it back up less than 30 seconds later, off a two-on one with Andrew Peeke against Brent Burns. Assists went to Peeke and Alexander Texler.

Brent Burns grabbed the lead back for San Jose at 8:44, with a blast from the blue line that flew by three Blue Jackets, hit Merzlikins in the sleeve and went into the net. Assists went to Matt Nieto and Timo Meier.

Cole Sillinger tied it back up at 17:48, off another two-on-one, this time with Mario Ferraro back. Sillinger took the shot from the hash marks and beat Hill on the blocker side.

Jack Roslovic gave the Blue Jackets the lead again 1:57 into the third period. Roslovic beat three Sharks defenders to the net for a back-hand shot around Hill’s outstretched glove. Assists went to Max Domi and Andrew Peeke.

Adam Boqvist scored his second of the night at 5:34, giving the Blue Jackets a two goal lead. Gabriel Carlsson caught a pass from Jakub Voracek on the boards. As he skated to the net, he made a back-hand pass across to Boqvist who was just arriving above the blue paint. Assists went to Carlsson and Voracek.

Tomas Hertl cut the Columbus lead back down to one at 10:11 of the period. Timo Meier dug a puck out of the corner ad Jonathan Dahlen pushed it up to Hertl in the face-off circle. Assists went to Dahlen and Meier.

Gustav Nyqvist scored scored a sixth goal for Columbus at 16:42. The Sharks challenged it as an offside play and it was disallowed.

Alexandre Texier scored into the empty net at 18:53 to make it officially 6-4. Assists went to Gustav Nyqvist and Eric Robinson.

The Sharks just barely won the face-off battle, winning 51% of the draws. They won 71% of the second period draws but were beaten in the first and the third. The Sharks outshot the Blue Jackets in the first, 19-9, but were out-shot in the third 12-5, for a total shot count of 34-30 San Jose. The Sharks had no power plays, and the Blue Jackets had just one. The Sharks penalty kill gave up no shots.

The Sharks return home now, to face the Calgary Flames in San Jose on Tuesday at 7:30 PM PT.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Tony Oliva and Minnie Minoso in Hall of Fame

Tony Oliva and Minnie Miñoso in the Hall of Fame

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

This past Sunday, December 5, the Hall of Fame Early Baseball Era Committee (Pre 1950) and Golden Day Era Committee (1950-1969) got together to vote on 10 players’ Hall of Fame list. One of those ten was Tony Oliva, who fell short by one vote last time in 2014 to put his name in Cooperstown, New York. The other one was Orestes “Minnie” Minoso. Others inducted were Gil Hodges, Buck O’Neil, Jim Kaat, and Bud Fowler.

The committee that cast the votes consisted of members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, executives, and veteran media members. One of those that were selected was my good friend colleague and legendary Spanish Voice for the LA Dodgers, Hall of Famer Mr. Jaime Jarrin. The ceremony will take place next July in Cooperstown, New York. Great job by this committee, as all these players, deserve to be in Cooperstown.

–Pedro Oliva López Fernández, better known as Tony Oliva was a right fielder who hit left and threw right. Played from 1964 to 1976, born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, he ended his stellar 12-year career with .304 average, 220 Homers, 747 runs batted in, and 86 stolen bases.

In 1964 won the American League Rookie of the Year and was one of the most dominant players during his first season, Oliva led the league in average with .323 average doubles with 43 and runs scored 109, and was ‘número uno’ in the majors in hits with 217 as well as total bases (374) producing 32 home runs and 94 RBI. Became the first player in baseball history to win two consecutive league batting titles at the start of his career.

Oliva almost didn’t make it. In 1961 the Minnesota Twins took a look at Tony during Spring Training but was released before Opening Day. He then considered returning to Cuba, but on April 17 that year, the US launched the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, which failed (after the Brigada 2506 of Cuban patriots was double-crossed by the CIA) and soon after the US and Cuba broke diplomatic relations and he could not go back to Cuba because of travel restrictions.

As fate has it, it was a blessing in disguise. He stayed in the US and traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina to train with the Twins Class A affiliate and later after a recommendation from some coaches; he was introduced to the General Manager Phil Howser, who helped him to get another chance at the Big Show.

—History as a Rookie: Tony Oliva ended with 217 hits in 1964. In the history of MLB only Ichiro Suzuki in 2001 (242) Lloyd Wanner 1947 (223) and Jimmy Williams in 1899 (220) have had more hits than Oliva. In 1964 finished fourth in the vote for MVP of the American League, only Orioles Brooks Robinson and Yankees Mickey Mantle finished ahead of Oliva.

—Other notable numbers: Tony Oliva led the American League on hits 5 seasons and won 3 batting titles. Between 1964 and 1971 only Pete Rose, Lou Brock, Billy Williams, and Roberto Clemente had more hits.

—1965 won one of his three batting titles as he hit for a healthy .321 the only player to win batting titles in his first two seasons and finished second to teammate and fellow-Cuban great shortstop Zoilo “Zorro” Versalles in the MVP voting.

—1966 Gold Glove: The Cuban right fielder had a cannon of an arm throughout his career and this year won the top award for fielding.

–Eight surgeries: Suffered ligament damage early in his career than for his last five years underwent eight knee operations. It was not until the mid-1970s that Arthroscopic surgery came about, by then Tony was not the same player and that robbed him of a few more years of his career. Although his knees were not that good he was such a good hitter that he was also a Designated Hitter for the Twins in 1973 when the new DH rule began.

Tony Oliva’s number 6 was retired by the Minnesota Twins in 1971 and was inducted to the Twins Hall of Fame in 2000 with Rod Carew, Kirby Pucket and owner Calvin Griffith. Now, Tony Oliva joins his very good buddies in Minnesota, Rod Carew, Harmon Killebrew and Kirby Puckett in Cooperstown. In 1987 when the All Star Game took place at the Oakland Coliseum, I invited Tony to my baseball radio show; he took so many calls from fans that I had to ask for special 15 additional minutes from the next show that was going to air. It was granted and the lines were still lit-up when he had to leave.

Now going to Cooperstown. Oliva is also enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Cooperstown New York, Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame, Hispanic Heritage Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

A jovial man with a great attitude who is 83 years young has made it to the top, but in 1961 he though his career might not even get started in baseball. Tony Oliva never played in the Cuban Winter League which was nationalized that same 1961 by Cuba’s communist dictatorship.

That league was regarded as the best Winter League in the world, with talent from Cuba and Major League Baseball, with such players as Orestes (Minnie) Miñoso, Brooks Robinson, Cookie Rojas, Camilo Pascual, Bob Shaw, Jackie Brandt, Bill Werle, Pedro Ramos, Jim Bunning, Bob Allison, Chico Fernández, Zoilo Versalles, Mike Fornieles, Mike Cuellar and many others.

The late Bill Werle, born in the Bay Area used to tell me when he was a scout for the Orioles “Cubsa had the best Winter League, and most of us wanted to go there, because the caliber of baseball was great and the pay was also very good”. Werle pitcher in the major leagues and in 1956 won the Cuban Winter League title with the Tigres de Marianao.

Orestes (Minnie) Miñoso. Played for 20 years in the major leagues and in 1949 as a rookie with the Cleveland Indians became the first Hispanic player of black skin in las Grandes Ligas. Prior to his debut with Cleveland, he played from 1946 to 1949 with the New York Cubans, who played since the 1930’s in the Negro Leagues.

First time I remember seeing Miñoso was in the mid-1950’s, when my father took me to one of the Winter League Games in Havana, Minnie was playing left-field for the Tigres del Marianao team and he was as popular as anybody in Cuba. Decades later I saw him play in the Major Leagues with the Chicago White Sox, team which he played the most during that 20-year career.

There is only one guy in history than when you say “Minnie” everybody in baseball knows who you are talking about. He played for five decades from 1949 until 1980. There is only one Minnie indeed. I first met him when he was playing with the White Sox and interviewed him in various occasions.

He was as enthusiastic as anybody that was glad to be wearing a major league uniform. In 1980, during his last season and his last trip as a player to Oakland, he told me he did not like the solid black uniforms as he was wearing with shorts, he told me, “I do not like these uniforms because my knees are ugly”.

During a broadcast I was doing with the LA Angels Spanish radio in Chicago in the 2005 season, he sat with me most of the game doing commentary, and he truly enjoyed it, as he told me on the air: “I feel I am in Cuba sitting with you doing this game here”.

There was a time after the 1964 season that Minnie left the major leagues to play and manage in Mexico until 1973, then he made another couple of comebacks until he totally retired in 1980. Although towards the end of his career he was mostly used as a promotional tool for the White Sox, nevertheless inspiring many players like José Abreu, also born in Cuba who told me Minnie was his inspiration since he was a little boy in Cuba.

Minnie died March 1, 2015 in Chicago of a tear in the pulmonary artery, he was 90 years old. The White Sox had retired his famous #9 in 1983 and erected a statue outside U.S. Cellular Field in 2004. Chicago mourned the Cuban-born player like he was ‘one of their own’ One of the tallest buildings in downtown Chicago had a huge number nine illuminated over half of the building as well as numerous memorials depicting his life and exploits in the game he so much loved. He told me he was “ready to play” when he came to Oakland in 1980, when he was 55 years young, he did not play in Oakland but he did played in two games that season and did not get a hit in two turns at-bat. His career was done.

Minnie ended his 20 year MLB career with a solid .299 batting average.195 home runs, 1.093 RBI. 216 stolen bases led the American League in triples and stolen bases three times apiece and ended with a total of 2,110 hits. Currently listed #10 in history in ‘hit by pitches’ 195 times got hit at the plated, and for years he led the American League in ‘hit by pitches’.

Now going to Cooperstown, Orestes Saturnino “Minnie” Miñoso is also enshrined in the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame (In Exile) in Miami, 1983, the Mexican Professional Hall of Fame in 1996 and The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame in 2000.

Tony Oliva and Minnie Miñoso are the third and fourth Cuban-born players now in Cooperstown. The others are, Martin Dihigo and Tony Pérez.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: Shanahan-inserting Lance would disrupt play calling; Look for Garoppolo to complete games

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (5) is not expected to see much game action as starter Jimmy Garoppolo has been starting and completing most of the recent games. Garoppolo will start this Sunday against Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field in Seattle (AP file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 Joe, the San Francisco 49ers (6-5) above .500 having won three straight games and are looking like their back on track what would you say the Niners best chances are to have a shot at post season.

#2 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan says that it’s unlikely that he will insert back up quarterback Trey Lance into the line up anytime soon because it disrupts the play calling. So his obvious choice right now is to start and finish games with Jimmy Garoppolo.

#3 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel said that 49ers back up quarterback Trey Lance being the practice squad quarterback simulating the opponents’ quarterback gives Lance an opportunity to develop many facets of the game and gives him some developmental experience.

#4 Taking a look at the 49ers injury update: Wide receiver Jauan Jennings (groin), running back Trey Sermon (ankle), linebackers Fred Warner (hamstring) and Marcell Harris (concussion) did not practice and running back JaMycal Hasty (ankle), defensive tackle Maurice Hurst (calf) had limited practice time. Joe talk about how some of these players will be missed and how some might be limited today in Seattle.

#5 The 49ers take on the Seattle Seahawks (3-8) at Lumen Field today at 1:25pm. Seattle has lost three straight games most recently last Sunday to the Washington Football Team (5-6) 17-15. The Seahawks starting quarterback Russell Wilson has been struggling getting protection, getting time to throw and just executing in the red zone. How do you see the 49ers matching up against Wilson and the Seahawks today?

California wrapped up its 2021 football season on a winning note Sarturday night at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, as the Golden Bears upended Southern California 24-14, completing the Pac-12 slate for both schools.

The Bears’ offense wasn’t overwhelming, but good enough. Christopher Brooks led the Cal ballcarriers with 41 yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns. Chase Garbers completed 18 of 21 passes for 183 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions and was sacked three times for 15 yards. Trevon Clark caught five passes for 65 yards, and Kekoa Crawford caught four passes for 22 yards.

Vavae Malepeai was the Trojans’ top rusher with 107 yards on 18 attempts. Quarterback Jaxson Darr completed 17 of 26 passes for 189 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions and was sacked once. Michael Jackson III caught six passes for 73 yards, Kyle Ford snared five passes for 71 yards and a touchdown, and Tahj Washington caught five passes for 57 tards.

Cal (5-7) opened the scoring late in the first quarter, when Dario Longhetto booted a 27-yard field goal. The Trojans (4-8) took a 7-3 lead at 9:46 of the second quarter on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Darr to Ford.

The Golden Bears surged ahead to stay at 10-7 on Brooks’ 1-yard scoring run at 4:54 of the second quarter. Just 48 seconds later, Cal extended it’s lead with a stroke of luck. After Darwin Barlow gained two yards and fumbled on a 3rd-and-2 from the Bears’ 47, teammate Trey Paster picked up the loose ball and ran 55 yards for a Cal touchdown, giving the Bears a 17-7 halftime lead.

Cal extended its lead to 24-7 at 6:30 of the fourth quarter when Brooks scored his second touchdown of the night, a 2-yard run.

USC cut its deficit to 24-14 on a 30-yard Miller Moss touchdowbn pass to K.D. Nixon with 1:53 remaining in the game.

Dart was knocked out in the third quarter due to an apparent concussion. The loss ended the term of interim coach Donte Williams, who took over after Clay Helton was fired earlier this season. Lincoln Riley was recently hired to get the one-time power back on track.

Davis 29 pts leads Kings past Clippers 104-99; Kings take two from Clips in home at home series

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings (10-14) were back in action on Saturday night in Sacramento. The LA Clippers (12-12) were in town to face the Kings at 7 PM PST. The Kings last played on Wednesday when they took on the same LA Clippers at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Kings beat the Clippers on Wednesday in a well-played game. Would the Kings be able to replicate that performance on Saturday night? Yes! The Kings took down the Clippers 104-99 in Sacramento.

Neither team took a commanding advantage over the other in the first quarter. The Kings scored 29 points, led by a substantial 10 minutes from De’Aaron Fox, who scored 10. The Kings defense had moments of strength in the first quarter, but the Clippers were hitting their three-point shots. The Clippers also scored 29 points thanks to Reggie Jackson and Paul George, who both scored eight.

In the second quarter, the Clippers kept pace with the Kings for most of the quarter. However, the Kings went on a run towards the end of the half. Tyrese Haliburton was hitting threes from around the floor, and the Kings outscored the Clippers 21-16 in the second quarter to take the lead going into halftime at 50-45.

The Kings were led by Tyrese Haliburton in the first half, who scored 15 points. Reggie Jackson led the way for the Clippers with nine points. Could the Kings finish off the Clippers in the second half?

In the third quarter, the Kings and Clippers went back and forth. The Kings went on a run to open the quarter, and the Clippers countered with a run of their own later in the third. However, the Kings managed to hit a few shots in the final seconds to outscore the Clippers 26-25 in the third.

That performance would give the Kings the 76-70 lead heading into the last 12 minutes of the game. Terence Davis was why the Kings were in the lead, shooting 4-5 from three-point range and scoring 13 points in the third quarter. The Kings would look to close out the game and attempt to beat the Clippers for the second time in two games.

In the fourth quarter, both teams made their bids for the victory. In the last minutes, the Kings would expand the lead; then, the Clippers would pull closer again. However, the Kings ultimately showed a lot of toughness and held onto the lead to beat the Clippers 104-99.

The Kings were outscored by the Clippers 29-28 in the game’s final quarter. For the Kings, Terence Davis led the way again. Davis, who has a renewed confidence in his shot, scored 28 points on 9-16 shooting. Tyrese Haliburton added 18 for the Kings in victory.

The Clippers were led by Marcus Morris Sr., who scored 21 points in defeat. It was an excellent win for the Kings, who have a manageable schedule going forward to inch closer to a .500 record. The Kings currently sit at 10-14 on the season.

Up Next: The Kings stay home to take on the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday at 7 PM PST.

Blichfeld’s third period heroics lead Barracuda to 6-4 win over Canucks

San Jose Barracuda chalk up their first win of this brief two game series against the Abbotsford Canucks at Abbotsford Centre on Sat Dec 4, 2021 (photo by San Jose Barracuda)

by Marko Ukalovic

ABBOTSFORD, B.C.—Joachim Blichfeld is catching fire at the right time.

The Danish forward scored two goals, including the game winner, in the third period to propel the San Jose Barracuda to a come from behind 6-4 victory over the Abbotsford Canucks on Saturday evening at Abbotsford Centre.

Cole Moberg sent a shot off the boards and Blichfeld collected the puck and performed a spinning wrist shot that beat Canucks goalie Michael DiPierto up high for his seventh goal of the season with exactly four minutes left in the third period which proved to be the game winner.

Blichfeld has six goals in his last six games, including back-to-back games with multi goals.

San Jose snapped its season long four-game losing streak. Abbotsford had its two-game winning streak end.

San Jose (6-8-1-0) received a shot in the arm with forward Scott Reedy back in its lineup as the Sharks sent him back down to the Barracuda after playing two games in the NHL.

The ‘Cuda drew first blood 30 seconds into the game on an odd-man rush. Nick Merkley led a two-on-one with Jayden Halbgewachs. Merkley made a cross ice pass over to Halbgewachs who buried a wrist shot on the short side past DiPierto for his sixth goal of the season. Captain Jaycob Megna received the secondary assist.

That was just the sixth time San Jose has scored the first goal of the game this season.

Abbotsford (6-7-2-1) answered back on the power play. A shot from the point by Phil Di Guiseppe bounced around the crease with traffic in front of ‘Cuda goalie Alexei Melnichuk. Will Lockwood cleaned up the rebound for his fourth goal of the season at the 2:59 mark.

Reedy helped San Jose regain the lead on the power play. Nick Merkley sent in a shot from the left wing on net. After a mad scramble in front of the crease, Reedy, who was down on the ice, poked the puck underneath DiPierto for his team leading ninth goal of the season.

Reedy extended his goals and points streak to five-games.

The Barracuda went up 3-1 lead just past the halfway mark of the opening frame. Ryan Merkley danced around inside the Canucks zone before finding Jacke McGrew along the right wing. McGrew skated in and wired a wrist shot to the far side for his third goal of the season at the 10:44 mark.

Once again, the Canucks answered back on the power play. Cameron Schilling found Di Guiseppe along the left slot and the Canucks defenseman blasted a slap shot past Melnichuk for his fourth goal of the season at the 12:22 mark.

It was the first time this season San Jose held a lead after the first period.

Abbotsford even the score with their third power play goal early in the second period. Sheldon Rempal sent a pass behind his back from down low near the crease over to Nic Petan. The Canucks center made a move inside before firing a wrist shot top shelf past Melnichuk for his fourth goal of the season at the 1:54 mark.

The Barracuda came into the game with the worst penalty kill in the AHL. It is the seventh game this season they have given up multiple power play goals in a game.

San Jose thought they had their third lead of the game. Montana Onyebuchi sent a slap shot from the right point that hit off the post. Blichfeld’s second attempt had him banked the puck off the back off into the back of the net. After video review it was determined no goal.

Abbotsford took advantage of the break as they scored their third unanswered goal. Jack Rathbone received a cross ice pass at the left point, he skated in and sent a seeing-eyed wrist shot through the five-hole of Melnichuk for his first goal of the season at the 5:56 mark.

That ended the night for Melnichuk as ‘Cuda head coach Roy Sommer replaced Melnichuk with Zachary Sawchenko. Melnichuk gave up four goals on just 15 shots in 25:56 of action.

San Jose evened the score with an even strength goal halfway through the third period. Sasha Chmelevski centered a backhand pass from behind the net over to Blichfeld whose one-timer to the far post beat DiPierto for his first goal of the game and sixth goal of the season at the 10:48 mark.

Evan Weinger scored an empty netter to seal the game with 30 seconds left in the game. His third goal of the season snapped a five-game goal less draught.

Sawchenko stopped all 10 shots he faced in relief to earn the victory. DiPierto made 26 saves on 31 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-4 on the power play. Abbotsford was 3-for-4.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Blichfeld 2) Lockwood 3) Di Guiseppe.

Reedy, despite his time up for the parent club, leads the AHL with five power play goal and is first in the league in shooting percentage.

San Jose had its fourth come from behind victory of the season.

The Canucks are now (5-2-1-1) on home ice.

Onyebuchi and Vincent Arseneau had long, spirited fight in the first period.

The Canucks had its first annual Teddy Bear Toss night.

UP NEXT: Both teams conclude their two-game series on Sunday 12/5 at 4:00pm at Abbotsford Centre.

Warriors upset by San Antonio 112-107; Golden State chalks up fourth loss

San Antonio Spurs center Jakob Poeltl (25) and guard Lonnie Walker IV have plenty to be happy about after handing the Golden State Warriors their fourth loss of the season at the conclusion of the game Sat Dec 4, 2021 (AP News photo)

Warriors Upset By San Antonio 112-107

By Barbara Mason

A slow start for Golden State coupled with poor shooting spelled disaster for the Warriors. Lack of energy was not surprising after last night’s game. San Antonio came in with upset on their mind and their first half shooting 55 % was a huge factor in their 112-107 win.

Last night the Golden State Warriors dug deep to hand the Phoenix Suns their first loss in a very long time. That win by the Warriors took unbelievable energy. Tonight Golden State (19-4) was back on court taking on the San Antonio Spurs (8-13).

After last night’s game how would we see the Warriors handle San Antonio? Would they come out flat or would they take apart the Spurs?

In the first half we saw the later, a very flat Golden State. To make things even worse for the Warriors, the Spurs came out with a perfectly executed game plan and actually led by as much as 22 points in the first half. Stephen Curry couldn’t get anything going being completely covered by San Antonio, so any open looks were not coming Curry’s way. At the half the Warriors had made up a lot of ground trailing 67-58.

San Antonio continued to grind in the third quarter and extended their lead back into the double digits. With under five minutes left in the quarter the Warriors needed to make a move or suffer their fourth loss of the season.

Curry was 1 of 15 and watching this team tonight we all wondered where the team we saw last night had gone. The Warriors turnovers were starting to mount up and really killed any momentum that Golden State was able to create.

In the first three quarters the San Antonio Spurs were the better team in this game. They were better offensively and defensively. As the third quarter came to an end the Warriors began to heat up and Curry began to get loose and hit those three’s. They trailed by the score of 99-88 but a momentum shift in this game favored the Warriors.

The momentum that had favored the Warriors in the third quarter followed them into the fourth quarter. The 22 points that the Spurs had once enjoyed in this game had been cut to seven points. Golden State began forcing turnovers and cutting the Spurs lead. The energy that San Antonio had started the first three quarters with had fizzled but the Warriors were not taking full advantage.

The final four minutes of this game was a wild affair. The Spurs shooting had gone cold and the Warriors were hitting, taking their first lead of the game 106-103 with two minutes left in the game. With 1:05 left in the game the Warriors trailed by a single point. San Antonio extended their lead to 110-106 with 33.6 seconds left in the game eventually winning 112-107.

It was a sluggish start for the Warriors in the first half and dominant play for Golden State in the second half. It was just too little too late. They had fallen behind by such a huge margin in this game and just plain ran out of clock. The Spurs really capitalized on the Warriors mistakes and hit shots at the very end that were crucial.

A lot of credit has to go to the San Antonio Spurs who had five players in double digits and played three quarters of brilliant basketball. That was all it took for the Spurs.

The positives in this game for Golden State was the competitive play in the second half. They really gave themselves a chance to win. Curry finished with 25 points and Jordan Poole had 15 points. Head Coach Steve Kerr felt that the team was a step slow in this game and really drained.
