SACRAMENTO — The Sacramento Kings welcomed the Memphis Grizzlies to town on Sunday night for their first meeting of the season at Golden 1 Center. The Grizzlies had started their season opposite the Kings, as they won their first two games of the year prior to the matchup with the Kings to start the year 2-0. On the other hand, the Kings entered the game 0-2 after losing to the Clippers on the road and the Blazers at home to start the year. On Sunday, the game tipped off at 6 p.m. PDT.

The Grizzlies defeated the Kings 123-112 on Sunday to improve to 3-0 as the Kings fell to 0-3 on the season.

In the first quarter, neither team jumped out to any big advantages, but the Grizzlies did jump out to an early six-point lead in the first. Domantas Sabonis led the Kings back in the first as he scored 10 points and added eight rebounds to give the Kings a 28-25 lead as the quarter came to a close.

In the second quarter, the Kings’ defense collapsed, and the Grizzlies took full advantage of it. From down three heading into the quarter, the Grizzlies outscored the Kings 42-31 in the second to take a 67-59 lead into halftime.

Doug Christie spoke after the game on the issues the Kings have been having in one quarter of the game, this time the second quarter.

“I have to figure out a way to help them through their fight, the way that they’re battling, they’re putting themselves in it. In the preseason it was a second quarter that was tough. And then it was the third quarter of the last game. It’s just one quarter that’s kind of getting away from us. Tonight it was the second quarter plus 11. And that’s usually the difference in the game.”

On the positive side for the Kings, Zach LaVine kept the Kings in the game with 16 of his 20 points in the second quarter and carried the lion’s share of the offensive load.

Ty Jerome scored 10 points for the Grizzlies in the quarter to lead them to the halftime lead.

Coming out of halftime, the Kings managed to get the game back under control and stopped the bleeding that happened in the second quarter. It was Ty Jerome again for the Grizzlies on offense as he scored 11 more points to bring his game total to 21 at that point. On the other side, it was Zach LaVine who continued to put on a show as he scored another 11 points to bring his three-quarter total to 31 and keep the Kings within striking distance. All in, the Kings outscored the Grizzlies 31-29 in the third quarter as the Grizzlies took a 96-90 lead into the final 12 minutes of the game.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings battled but were ultimately unable to come away with the comeback as they fell to the Grizzlies 123-112. In the final quarter, the Grizzlies finished off the game by outscoring the Kings 27-22. The Kings’ defense had one too many breakdowns in the game, and the offense couldn’t pick up the pieces. The Grizzlies killed the Kings on the offensive glass as they came away with 18 offensive rebounds.

Doug Christie spoke after the game on the offensive rebounding issues the Grizzlies presented to the team.

“We got to block out. Don’t sit down there fighting. Precious is fighting. And I really want the guards to come back and clean up some of those. You got to win the battle. You can’t turn and look at it. You got to hit a guy.”

Zach LaVine spoke after the game on how he feels the team is fighting but coming up just short early in the season.

“The fight is there from everybody, we just need a little more.”

The Kings will now go on the road for a four-game, seven-day road trip. The first game of the trip is in San Antonio on Tuesday at 5 p.m. PDT.

Utah Mammoth game recap: Simashev Strikes Lightning 5-4 In Overtime

October 24, 2026

SALT LAKE CITY–Utah rookie defenseman Dmitri Simashev tied the game late in the second period with his first career NHL goal, then netted the overtime game-winner to complete the comeback against Tampa Bay for a 5-4 win.

The Utah Mammoth (8-4-0) returned to Delta Center on Saturday night following a 5-3 loss in Seattle on Thursday to face the Tampa Bay Lightning (7-3-1).

Per the Mammoth stat crew, Utah entered the night 15-for-39 (38.5%) on the power play through 11 games on the season, leading the NHL both in power play goals and power play percentage. They are also the only NHL team with 18 different goal scorers and eight different power play goal scorers.

At 5:10 of the first period, Lightning forward Jake Guentzel was credited with his 7th goal of the season, unassisted, to put Tampa Bay on the scoreboard. In reality, the entire goal was assisted by Utah defenseman Nate Schmidt who accidentally redirected a puck past netminder Karel Vejmelka.

Guentzel, who was the closest player to the miscue, was credited with the goal. Two minutes later, Mammoth forward Kailer Yamamoto took the puck from the top of the red circle in his defensive zone the full length of the ice and beat Dennis Hildeby with a wrist shot for his third of the year to even the score.

Halfway through the frame, Pontus Holmberg regained the Lightning lead 2-1 on a snap shot for his 3rd of the season, assisted by Erik Cernak and Ryan McDonagh. At 12:42, with Utah captain Clayton Keller in the penalty box for interference against Holmberg, Brayden Point picked up his 2nd of the year, assisted by Nikita Kucherov and Charle-Edouard D’Astous, to put Tampa Bay up 3-1.

Kucherov’s assist was the 1,138th point of his career, making him the career Lightning leader in points as his teammates jumped onto the ice to congratulate him. With a little over two minutes remaining in the period, and with Emil Lilleberg in the sin bin for interference against Barrett Hayton, Dylan Guenther closed the gap to 3-2 with his 5th goal of the season, assisted by some perfect passing by Mikhail Sergachev and Keller.

Tampa Bay reestablished their two-goal lead at 5:32 of the second period with Conor Geekie netting his 2nd goal of the season, assisted by Scott Sabourin.  At 12:33 Utah went on the power play when Kucherov was whistled for hooking against Yamamoto, and though the Mammoth did not score with the man-advantage, Anders Lee tipped in the puck six seconds after it expired to get Utah back to within one, assisted by MacKenzie Weegar and Vincent Trocheck.

With three minutes remaining in the period, rookie defenseman Dmitri Simashev picked a great time to score his first NHL goal, assesed by Andrew Peeke and Trocheck, to complete the comeback and go to the locker room tied at 4-4. Simashev became the 19th Mammoth goal scorer of the season on the play.

Following a scoreless third period, Tampa Bay and Utah went to overtime. Since losing to Nashville in a shootout on April 14, 2025, Utah has gone to overtime in 16 of their last 96 regular season games, winning 10-of-16 bonus hockey opportunities in the OT period.

Last season Utah became the only team in NHL history since the introduction of shootouts to go the entire season without participating in one. At 1:44 of the extra frame, Simashev passed the puck to Hayton from behind his own net as both players then charged up the ice.

With Hayton attacking Hildeby, he dished off the puck at the last moment to Simashev who was crashing the net and knocked it in for his 2nd goal of the night, his 2nd NHL goal overall, and his first career overtime game-winner for the 5-4 victory. Along with Hayton, Vejmelka broke onto the scoresheet picking up his first assist of the season.

In the winning locker room, Simashev couldn’t hold back his excitement. “I feel amazing,” the rookie defenseman said. “”So I scored in overtime in the KHL, and it was kind of the same thing. I scored my first goal the game before and then the second in overtime. But I mean, I didn’t expect to (play) in overtime to be honest. Thanks Butter (Daniil But) for trusting in me. I was just so happy when we scored the goal that that’s all my feelings right now.” Talking about the comeback mentality after Thursday’s loss in Seattle, Simachev said, “I think that starts from the locker room, from the energy you have before the game and between the periods. I think obviously the character in the third period and overtime. That’s the main thing. I played in the KHL and won the championship and I just want to say character is the most important thing.” So what was better? Scoring his first NHL goal, or scoring the overtime game-winner? “It’s hard to say. Both. I can’t pick one, so just going to say both of them.”

“One of those nights, something seemed to happen every shift,” said forward Anders Lee. “We needed all facets of our game, and I think especially in the third period, but regardless of what had happened before that, we stuck to our plan and got to our game, and we really got to it in the third. We put ourselves in a great position by clawing back before that. Just proud of the group that we settled in and, and didn’t get away from what we needed to do tonight. At the end of the day, when you do that over time, it gives you an opportunity to win a game.”

“What a game,” said Mammoth Head Coach André Tourigny in his opening statement. “There’s a lot to unpack here. I think the first thing for me is, we started really good, but then we got a little bit of bad luck. This morning, I was talking about helping our goalie. I’m not sure shooting in our own net was part of the plan, but it’s part of what I want to talk about. Veg had a tough stretch, and you start the game that way, and then they score three goals in the first period. He showed a lot of character bouncing back and coming up big like he did at the end of the game and making big saves in overtime and in the third. Really proud of him, really proud for him. I think we all know how much he cares and how much the team means to him, so to see him bounce back and come up big in key moments and help us to get the two points was huge. So is the team, because after they scored, you could see the stress and we were not as connected from that moment. We misexecuted a lot of plays and we were a little bit nervous. We were capable of regrouping and finding our game and played much much better in the second half of the game. Really proud of the guys for that. We talked about that being one of our goals this season of being able to find a B game, being able to close games, being able to find your game when you don’t necessarily play your best game. Being able to find a gear, find a shift in momentum and get your game back. The way we played in the third period, (I’m) extremely proud of the boys and the way we reacted, so a lot of positives there. And obviously, Barrett Hayton’s line was, wow, (they) were really good.”

Speaking further of Hayton’s line, Bear remarked, “Well, right from the beginning, first shift of the game, they.. I would like to find a sexy way to tell you, they just keep it simple and they win battles. Hockey is not that complicated if you don’t want to complicate it. They were our best line because they were our simpler line. You don’t see them make drop pass, east-west plays. You don’t see them make any blind plays. They protect the puck if they have to. They play north all the time, they get on the forecheck, get pucks behind the D, they put pucks at the net, move the puck at the open guy, (if the) guy’s not open they put the puck in a safe place. Other lines are trying too hard, trying to make plays that are low percentage, and then you end up having to check and backcheck and defend just because of your poor decision. I think that line, all our lines work for me in terms of work ethic and intensity. That line takes the best decision on the puck.”

Utah, now 8-4-0, closes out the two-game homestand on Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild (7-3-2) with whom they are currently tied for first place in the Central Division.  Following Tuesday’s game the Mammoth embark on a six-game swing through Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Vegas, finally returning home on November 12 to open up a five-game homestand against the St. Louis Blues.

San Jose Earthquakes match wrap:

By William Espy

The San Jose Earthquakes were back on the road this weekend as they visited FC Dallas and one of the MLS’s top scorers, Petar Musa, at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. The Quakes certainly got a taste of Musa’s handy work scoring two goals that pretty much put the Quakes out of business with a 3-0 shutout loss.

It was a relatively uneventful first half, with the only play of note being a foul on Dallas’s Herman Johansson that resulted in Reid Roberts getting a yellow card in the 29th minute. Although it was scoreless after 45 minutes, FC Dallas seemed to be dominating up to that point.

Their domination continued in the second half, but it still took a while for either team to get on the scoreboard. After San Jose’s goalkeeper Angus Gunn got a yellow card in the 64th minute, he made a few more saves before finally conceding a goal to Musa in the 83rd minute.

Things started spiraling from there for the Earthquakes. Paul Marie fouled Kaick Ferreira in the 87th minute resulting in a penalty attempt for Dallas. Musa stepped up to the spot and scored his second goal in five minutes. Santiago Moreno then scored Dallas’s third goal of the night in stoppage time to secure a 3-0 victory for the home team.

The Earthquakes’ loss ended a nine-game unbeaten streak, and although they’ve already clinched a playoff spot, adding more points on the board are going to be wildly important for their seeding.

The Quakes will return home on Wednesday, as they’ll host the Colorado Rapids at home for a midweek matchup.

The San Jose Sharks lost 6-4 to the Boston Bruins Saturday. Casey Mittelstadt, Marat Khusnutdinov, David Pastrnak, James Hagens, David Minten and Will Borgen scored for Boston. Jeremy Swayman made 23 saves for the win. Michael Misa, Kiefer Sherwood, Dmitry Orlov and Will Smith scored for San Jose. Alex Nedeljkovic made 29 saves in the loss.

The Sharks finished this road trip 3-2-1. After the game, Sharks goaltender Alex Nedljkovic talked about the long eastern trip:

“We had chances, we had some momentum and just let it kind of slip away, and didn’t finish. Yeah, it’s a tough one to swallow right now, definitely, pretty sour taste in your mouth, at least for me. We did a lot of good things. I think there’s still plenty of room for us to grow, a lot of room for us to grow in certain areas and get better at. So we’ll take the five hundred record. It’s a tough trip, a long trip, played in some tough buildings.”

Casey Mittelstadt scored the first goal of the game at 3:08 of the first period. He passed the puck forward from behind the net, then joined the scrum in front of the net to poke the puck home. Assists went to Elias Lindholm and James Hagens.

Michael Misa tied the game at 5:54 with a power play goal. Tyler Toffoli sent the puck to the net from high up the boards. It went through the blue paint and out the other side. Misa was waiting for it and knocked it home. Assists went to Toffoli and Jacob Trouba.

The shots were 12-11 Boston in the first period. The Bruins took two penalties and the Sharks took none.

Marat Khusnutdinov gave the Bruins their second lead of the night with a goal at 8:20 of the second period. The Bruins had the puck moving all around the Sharks zone before Morgan Geekie got it in front of the net. But the Sharks defense was on him, so Geekie handed it off to Khusnutdinov, who found a little space and backhanded it in. An assist also went to Fraser Minten.

Kiefer Sherwood tied it up again with a short handed goal at 13:34. Sherwood intercepted a pass in the neutral zone, carried the puck in and beat Swayman on the stick side.

The shots were 11-6 Boston in the second. The Sharks took three penalties and Boston took one, until Michael Kesselring responded to being boarded by Mark Kastelic and got a roughing penalty. They each got a minor for those, and then fighting majors to boot.

Dmitry Orlov gave the Sharks their only lead of the game with a power play goal at 4:03 of the third period. His slap shot came from the blue line, assisted by Ivar Stenberg and Mason Marchment.

David Pastrnak tied it back up again at 8:27. He caught a cross-ice pass from JJ Peterka and fired off a snap shot from above the faceoff dot.

James Hagens gave the Bruins a 4-3 lead at 9:07, wristing it through a crowd at the blue paint. An assist went to Lindholm.

David Minten scored a power play goal at the 12 minute mark. Minten knocked in a rebound from a Peterka shot. Assists went to Peterka and Mittelstadt.

Will Smith gave the Sharks life with a goal at 12:27. His shot came from just inside the faceoff circle. Assists went to Jacob Trouba and Macklin Celebrini.

Will Borgen put the game away with an empty netter at 19:32.

The third saw an early fight at 2:38 between Tanner Jeannot and Zack Ostapchuk. After that, the Bruins took three penalties and the Sharks took one. The shots were 12-9 Boston.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday at home against the Buffalo Sabres at 7:30 PM PT.
