San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca: What’s the top highlight of this season? Who will be returning next season from the bullpen?

On the Giants podcast with Michael:

Our very own Morris Phillips says the top of the Giants offense on Wednesday was basically provided by catcher Aramis Garcia. Garcia hit one into the left field bleachers against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night. It was not much, but Garcia contributed and manager Bruce Bochy said, “We were on hit away we’ve done that a few times.”

The Giants avoided sweep in the this series getting a win on Tuesday night 5-4 using seven pitchers. Of those pitchers Bochy was showcasing were Steven Okert, Reyes Montana, and Tony Watson for next season. The quest for a new general manager will begin this off season. This is the last Giants podcast for us and Michael tells us what his top highlight of 2018 is.

The Oakland A’s are wrapping up the regular season soon enough. This weekend, the A’s are in Anaheim for three games. Joey talks about his top A’s highlight for this season. Also, a look at the starters for the rest of the regular season and postseason: Mike Fiers, Trevor Cahill, Daniel Mengden, Edwin Jackson, Chris Bassitt.

For relief, the A’s have Jeurys Famila, Yusmerio Petit, Fernando Rodney, Lou Trivino, Ryan Butcher, and Shawn Kelly. The A’s have introduced the “bullpenning” concept–will they use it in the postseason? Also, Khris Davis has had a smashing year with .249, 47 home runs, and 121 RBIs.

Giants can knock Dodgers out of the playoffs

By Jeremy Harness

We’ve seen this a few times before in the long history of these two teams.

There was 1982, when Joe Morgan’s homer knocked the Dodgers out of the playoffs on the final day of the regular season. However, the Giants also suffered heartbreak at the hands of the Dodgers in 1993, as the Dodgers blasted them 15-1 on the final day to keep them out of the postseason.

Compelling, potentially season-altering moments like these are exactly why the Giants and Dodgers engage in a three-game series to end the regular season year in and year out.

The Giants have been out of the playoff picture for quite some time, but the Dodgers are right in the middle of it. In fact, the three-game weekend series – the final three games of the regular season for both teams – is a make-or-break one for LA in every sense of the word.

The Dodgers are currently sit one game behind the Colorado Rockies for the National League West.

However, they are only one game ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals for the NL’s final playoff spot. In other words, the defending National League champs are hanging on by a thread.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals end the season with a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs, a team that has already clinched the top spot in the National League and will most likely look to rest its key players in order to get ready for the league’s Division Series next week.

To start the three-games series at AT&T Park, the Dodgers will send Hyun-jin Ryu (6-3, 2.00 ERA) to the mound against Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner (6-6, 3.20 ERA).

Ryu enters this matchup in fine form, as he did not give up a single run in each of his last two outings, giving up a total of eight hits over 13 innings in wins over the Rockies and San Diego Padres. Bumgarner has not been too bad himself, as he shut out the Rockies on Sept. 15 but gave up three runs over six innings in a no-decision against the Cardinals last Saturday.

Dereck Rodriguez (6-4, 2.50 ERA) will take the ball for the Giants on Saturday against Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw (9-5, 2.53 ERA). Rodriguez has lost each of his last two decisions, while Kershaw has won each of his last five.

To end the season, there will be a pair of rookies who take the mound, and this could very well decide the Dodgers’ season. Walker Buehler (7-5, 2.76 ERA) will go for the Dodgers against Giants lefty Andrew Suarez (7-12, 4.22 ERA).

Sharks Preseason 2018: Comeback Flames Out

By Mary Walsh

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks lost a second preseason game to the Calgary Flames at SAP Center on Thursday night. Despite scoring the first goal of the game and making a fervent push late in the game, the Sharks could not catch up after they gave Calgary a 4-1 lead. The 4-3 loss featured two goals from Sharks prospect Antti Suomela, who could very well show up on the opening night roster. Timo Meier also scored for the Sharks, while the Flames got goals from Mark Giordano, Elias Lindholm, Travis Hamonic and James Neal.

The Sharks got the first power play at 2:36 when Sam Bennett went to the box for slashing Melker Karlsson. The first power play unit was comprised of Erik Karlsson, Joe Thornton, Logan Couture, Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns. The Calgary defenders pushed them out of the zone and the Sharks changed their lines to Evander Kane, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Kevin Labanc, and Tomas Hertl, with Burns staying on for most of the power play. The Sharks came away from the man advantage without a shot.

About five minutes in, Suomela and Meier had a good chance after a takeaway in the offensive zone, but Mike Smith was up to the task and stopped shots from both. Calgary answered with a nice chance of their own, but after a scramble in the crease, Martin Jones shut them down.

A flurry in front of the Calgary net started as Joonas Donskoi pushed the puck to the net and Suomelo pushed it under Smith’s pads for the game’s first goal. Assists went to Kevin Labanc and Erik Karlsson. Time of the goal was 10:24.

A Thornton pass was intercepted by Mikael Backlund, who sent it to Mark Giordano, who tied the game with his fourth goal of the preseason at 11:30.

Calgary took the lead after Justin Braun was helped to the ice at the Sharks’ blue line, which allowed Elias Lindholm and Johnny Gaudreau into the Sharks zone, where Lindholm scored at 17:00.

At the end of the first, the score was 2-1 Calgary and the shots were 12-8 Calgary.

The Sharks started the second with a penalty at 1:14, a hooking penalty to Joe Thornton. It was Calgary’s first power play of the game. The Sharks’ penalty killers pushed Calgary out three times in less than a minute. The power play could not get any traction, but after the penalty expired, Calgary applied an excess of pressure and scored a third goal at 3:31. The goal was Travis Hamonic’s (his first of the preseason) with assists to Mikael Backlund and Derek Ryan.

The Sharks had a third power play at 9:19 when Matthew Tkachuk went to the box for cross-checking. That power play went nowhere, but a nice chance for Timo Meier after the penalty expired resulted in a fourth power play for San Jose at 11:21. The Sharks did not very much on that power play and almost as soon as it expired, James Neal went the other way and gave Calgary at 4-1 lead. That was his first goal of the preseason.

With Kane, Donskoi and Joakim Ryan around the net, Suomela deflected a Burns shot into the net at 18:00 of the second.

With the score 4-2 Calgary and the shots 19-18 Calgary, the second period came to a close.

To start the third period, Labanc was in for Meier with Couture and Hertl. Suomela was out on a line with Donskoi and Kane, while Meier turned up with Thornton and Pavelski.

Erik Karlsson took his first penalty as a Sharks at 5:12 of the third, called for interference on Gaudreau. The Sharks killed that off, keeping their penalty kill perfect.

That penalty kill had more practice at 8:49 when Labanc went to the box. The penalty killing unit did not look as one would expect, at least not after the first shift. Couture, Hertl, Burns and Braun were out as one unit. They were followed by Kane and Meier, who started in the neutral zone and went due north to score shorthanded. Meier got the goal, with assists to Kane and Braun.

At 14:02, Kane took issue with a hit he sustained at the Sharks’ blue line and put some people in the box. Calgary’s Sam Bennett got five for fighting, while Labanc sat in Kane’s place for a two-minute roughing penalty, and Kane himself was excused.

Despite pulling the goalie in the last minute, the Sharks could not find that fourth goal to tie the game and finished with the 4-3 loss to Calgary.

The Sharks’ next preseason game will be Sunday in Las Vegas against the Golden Knights in a 5:00 pm PT puck drop.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh: Are the Sharks ready for opening night when the puck drops Wednesday night?

On the Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 The San Jose Sharks have been playing some competitive hockey in preseason. Although they lost in Calgary 7-5 on Saturday.

#2 The Sharks helped keep the Flames in check for two periods, but faltered in the third period. It’s just preseason, but will Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer have to worry about the Sharks late in the game?

#3 Let’s talk about Kevin LaBanc. LaBanc was playing some precise hockey for San Jose last season and was able to find the back end of the net in exhibition play thus far.

#4 What do you see in the Sharks in improvements from last season and also would you consider Erik Karlsson a huge piece of the Sharks’ puzzle?

#5 Preseason concludes Sunday going into the Sharks season, which starts Wednesday with Anaheim. How ready does team look going into opening night?

San Jose sports podcast with Ana Kieu: New Earthquakes coach, same old results; San Jose State has yet to defeat Hawaii in Nick Rolovich era

On the San Jose sports podcast with Ana:

1. The San Jose Earthquakes fired head coach Mikael Stahre and assistant Alex de Crook last week. Assistant coach Steve Ralston has been serving as interim head coach since then, but was unable to win in his first match, as the Quakes lost 4-3 to Atlanta United at Avaya Stadium last Wednesday.

2. On a positive note, San Jose made Destinee Coronado, a young ovarian cancer patient, their honorary captain for the night versus Atlanta last Wednesday.

3. The Quakes were in L.A. to take on LAFC in MLS’ newest rivalry last Saturday. LAFC shutout San Jose 2-0. What went wrong?

4. The Quakes remain on the road. They’ll take on the Houston Dynamo this Saturday. Houston is an on-and-off team, so what should San Jose do in order to defeat them?

5. In Mountain West football, San Jose State has yet to defeat Hawaii in the Nick Rolovich era. The Spartans’ last win against Hawaii came in 2015 by a final score of 42-23.

6. The Spartan coaching staff was on the road last weekend to find new Spartans throughout California. Currently, there are 95 Spartans from California. How important is it to have hometown guys on this team?

NFL Thursday Night Week 3: Fantasy Football Written Prescription success

DiehardFIN

By Dr. Vasu Vaddiparty

Week 4 of the NFL Season is the quarter-point of the 2018 season. How are we all doing in our leagues? 3-0 and living large, 2-1 and feeling pretty good, 1-2 and feeling okay that nothing like a 2-week win streak would help out a rough start, or are you 0-3 and reaching for the Malox right now?

Week 4 starts out with Bye weeks and the first two contestants are the Carolina Panthers and the Washington Redskins. Fantasy Football Doctors will give you our thoughts on the podcast but for right now we break into Thursday Night’s extravaganza–Minnesota Vikings visiting the Los Angeles Rams.

Minnesota was a major player coming into the season with Kirk Cousins as the big Free Agent prize at QB and that stifling defense vs. the hottest team on the planet in the Rams. Here is the breakdown for tonight as it relates to Thursday night.

Vikings
The Vikings have gotten off to an okay start. Everyone still feeling each other out on offense, the defense has played pretty well and then last Sunday happened. Vikes at home no less get thumped by the Buffalo Bills. TO’s, bad defense, bad tackling, everything that could go wrong went wrong right from the start. Did they overlook Buffalo in preparation for the huge matchup with the Rams? More importantly are there fantasy options still available for the Vikings this Thursday?

QB
Kirk Cousins was the big free-agent prize for Minnesota for 3 years. He’s had a pretty good career with the Redskins but has gotten off to a shaky start in some respects for his new team. A mediocre home opening win vs. SF, a roughing the passer penalty that shouldn’t have been enabled them to tie GB in Week 2 and the drubbing vs. Buffalo last Sunday. The Rams defense has been extremely tough this year. The only bad stretch they had was opening night in Oakland where they actually trailed going into the 4th quarter. Cousins is still a really good passer, very accurate and has the ability with the players around him to be effective. This Rams defense is tough and might be tough on him Thursday. If you have a better option than Cousins, I would go the other way, even if that means going with a lesser QB who is playing a very bad defense (ie. Mariotta). IF you go with Kirk then be assured if they are behind they will be passing the ball a ton and that is where he excels in the 4th quarters of games.

RB
There are few options here to choose from but are they even good enough options to use. The major one is Dalvin Cook. It seems he will be healthy enough to play after coming back from injury. He would be a good RB2 if you need one. Other options for Minnesota are Matt Boone and Latavius Murray. These are not stellar options as neither one has established himself in a way that would have fantasy owners salivating. Murray gained 1000 yards last year but worked out because Cook got hurt in preseason and had to sit out the whole year. Vikings RB are not a good option unless you can flex someone like Cook but certainly no #1’s here.

WR / TE
Minnesota has 3 solid receivers and with Cousins at QB. They are all viable targets and should be highly considered. Definitely look at Diggs and Theilen as WR 1 or 2 on your rosters and possibly a starter. If they fall behind these guys will be valuable as WR in the later stages throwing the ball. A red zone master the last few years even with other QB’s has been TE Kyle Rudolph. He is a very good receiver and more importantly a great receiver in and around the goal line. He is a high consideration for anyone in FFL who doesn’t have Ertz, Kelce or Gronk.

Rams
QB
The highly anticipated matchup and what a lot seem to believe is the first real test for the Rams and QB Jared Goff comes tonight. Goff has had a bevy of weapons to go to and has come up pretty big in those situations. He will probably have a couple of scores and some yards but if they are ahead or have a comfortable lead they might run the ball more so it’s kind of an iffy situation with Goff. But he would be one I would seriously consider starting. He would be a good solid QB1 or QB2 on anyone’s roster.

RB
The Rams RB’s are a collection of great RB but on everyone’s wish lists and thoughts Todd Gurley is the premier back everyone on the field would love to have and FFL owners number 1 pick on their collective wish lists as well. Not a lot of analysis needed here. START, START, START Gurley. Oh and he catches the ball too very well. He will have his usual 100 and 60 receiving even against a tough Vikings defense.

WR / TE
Rams WR are very underrated pieces to this machine that is rolling on all cylinders. The collection of WR are very good, but individually they may lack a little based on how much the ball is spread out. Robert Woods is the leader of the pack, the go-to guy, could be high on people’s list. A speed guy who can catch the long ones and go the distance. Brandin Cooks was brought in from the Patriots. He is also a speed guy whose hands were questionable in the past but has improved a great deal in the ability to make the catch. He can score as well too. Cooper Kupp is the guy to get the ball in the middle of the field. Typical WR3 that is in the slot a lot and looked upon to move the chains. Tyler Higbee is the TE. He is more the blocking type but he will catch his 3-4 and maybe get a score. But wouldn’t use him as TE2 even because of others available.

Special Teams/Defense
Both team’s defenses have played pretty well but the Rams are outstanding defensively. They have turned the opponents over been diligent in coverage. Only part of defense that might hurt is Talib is out for sure and Peters the other CB is questionable. Might be susceptible to the passing game tonight. But they do have a pass rush and can cause fumbling problems which the Vikings had a lot of fun vs. Buffalo. The Vikings play a great scheme defensively and their main meal money is the TO and have scored some TD’s off fumbles but mostly interceptions. Rams don’t turn the ball over very much so this might be a little shakier than taking the Rams’ defense. The Rams special teams are very good and are certainly a good play as Defense/Special Teams position. I would take them again as I have the last 3 weeks.

Overall Matchup
The Rams are -7 in the pointspread with an over/under of 49. Seems pretty high with two great defenses. The Rams defense might be a little greater. The Rams have scored 30+ points in all 3 games but have given up a few points in 2 of 3 sandwiching a week 2 shutout of Arizona. All that being said, I find myself leaning towards the Rams

LA Rams 34

Minnesota 13

A’s to conclude regular season against the Angels at Angel Stadium

By: Ana Kieu

The Oakland A’s will wrap up its regular season against the Los Angeles Angels with a three-game series at Angel Stadium. The A’s hope to finish the season on a positive note, while the Angels are just playing for pride right now.

Game 1 will feature A’s right-handed pitcher Mike Fiers (12-7, 3.31 ERA) against the Angels’ right-handed pitcher Jaime Barria (10-9, 3.54 ERA).

As of Thursday, neither team has announced their starters for Games 2 or 3.

The A’s Twitter appeared to be laid-back coming into Friday night’s road game in Anaheim, Calif.

A’s reliever Liam Hendricks, a Perth, Australia native, chooses to remember the millions of pets in need of homes everyday. Hendricks has been showing his support for pet adoption and you can show your support as well. You can get started by tweeting #RememberMeThursday and checking out RememberMeThursday.org for more information on the joy of pet adoption.

Also, there’s still time for you to put in your bid for this week’s Stomper in the Town statues at athletics.com/auctions if you haven’t already done so. There are four types of statues: Stuck on the A’s — McNally’s Irish Pub, Stompedelic — Plank, Hip Hop Stomp — 4496 Broadway and Oakland A’stec Stomper — Everett and Jones.

In my opinion, the A’s deserve to be called the CinderellA’s. But, of course, they’re an American League West team, so they’re not going to get as much love like American League East teams like, say, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

The A’s were a rebuilding team and weren’t supposed to be good even though they had a high-caliber starting rotation. Of course, the A’s suffered a plethora of injuries, but their DH–Khris Davis–has made his American League MVP case. Whether or not Davis earns the AL MVP title, Davis had himself a heck of a season with 47 home runs as of Thursday. Davis has already joined Mark McGwire and Jimmie Foxx as the only players with three total 40-home run seasons in the A’s 118-year history on September 1st.

San Jose State men’s basketball shakes up staff with two new additions

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Ryan Cooper has been hired as San Jose State men’s basketball assistant coach and Trent Miyagishima as director of men’s basketball operations. Head coach Jean Prioleau made the announcement Thursday.

“I’m really excited about finalizing my staff,” Prioleau said. “Coach Cooper has done a lot of good work for us. He was kept over from the last staff. From the time I came in last year, he was on top of everything from an administrative point of view. He had everything lined up in terms of travel and study hall and things like that, and just had a good feel and good pulse of the team. I leaned on him a lot last year and now he is taking a step up. I think he is going to do a great job for us. He is connected in Northern California and was a high school coach in the Bay Area, so he has those connections and we are looking forward to continuing to work together. It’s his time now.”

Cooper joined the Spartans’ staff as the Prioleau’s third assistant coach along with Will Kimble and Julius Hodge. A San Jose, Calif. native, Cooper previously served as the Director of Basketball Operations at SJSU for the last two seasons. Prior to his stint with the Spartans, he served as head men’s basketball coach at three Bay Area high schools: Del Mar High (2008-2012), Oak Grove High (2013-2014) and Valley Christian High (2014-2016).

A 2008 Notre Dame de Namur University graduate, Cooper was also a standout college player who finished his playing career fourth on NDNU’s career scoring list, second in career assists and a member of the 1,000 point club–all while earning All-Pacific West Conference honors in three of his four seasons.

“I want to thank Coach Prioleau for the opportunity to be an assistant on his staff,” Cooper said. “I really enjoyed working with him in year one as the director of basketball operations. I love San Jose State and really enjoy our staff chemistry. I’m looking forward to a great season.”

Miyagishima, who has been involved with the Spartans’ program since 2015, will take over for Cooper as the director of basketball operations.

“When I think of Trent, I think of a young man that really deserves the opportunity,” Prioleau said. “He went to San Jose State and graduated from here, and he was actually volunteering for us all last year. He has shown that he really wants to be a part of this and has shown that he wants to be a head coach, and now I’m giving him the opportunity to step in to the Director of Basketball Operations position and I think he’s going to do a great job for us. He will be able to lean on Coach Cooper a little bit, because Cooper held that position for a couple years, and he will also be able to lean on me and the other coaches. This is going to be a big jump for Trent, but at the end of the day he just loves San José State and I think he will do a great job for us.”

A 2017 San Jose State graduate, Miyagishima previously served as the team’s video coordinator in 2017 and was the head manager in 2015 and 2016. The 24-year old product of Woodland Hills, Calif., will now oversee all of the men’s basketball day-to-day operations in his new role.

“I am blessed an honored to continue to be a part of this Spartan Program,” Miyagishima said. “As an alumnus, it means a little more to represent the Spartans. I just want to thank Coach Prioleau for giving me the opportunity to be the next director of basketball operations. I’m ready to get things rolling and excited to be a part of the upcoming season.”

Oakland Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: Will Carr need to adjust anything on offense in preparation for Sunday’s game?

On the Raiders podcast with Tony:

#1 The Raiders must like the first half of football games because they always take the lead and lose them in the second half.

#2 Things were so bad for the Raiders in their 28-20 loss in Miami that Dolphins wide receiver Albert Wilson threw a 52-yard touchdown and also caught a 74-yard touchdown to come back from being down 17-7.

#3 The Miami Dolphins’ Xavien Howard played some good defense stopping quarterback Derek Carr’s throws. Howard also stuck the Raiders from scoring a goal line touchdown in the second quarter.

#4 Carr had a 27-39 day for 345 yards and got picked off twice. What does Carr needs to improve for this Sunday after the Raiders have now gone to 0-3?

#5 The Raiders’ Jordy Nelson was the Raiders’ top receiver with six passes for 173 yards and a touchdown.
