Cal overwhelmed by UCLA, 37-7, as bowl aspirations take a hit

By Morris Phillips

BERKELEY, Calif. — The Cal Bears needed their best performance against the UCLA Bruins at California Memorial Stadium on Saturday night. Instead, they came up with one of their worst.

The Bruins picked up their first win of the season–after an 0-5 start–throttling the Bears from start to finish, 37-7. Bruins running back Joshua Kelly ran for 157 yards and three touchdowns while Cal’s Brandon McIlwain continued his streak of crippling turnovers.

The Bears fell to 3-3 on the season and 0-3 in the Pac-12. With six games remaining, the Bears appear unlikely to achieve bowl eligibility with Washington, Stanford, USC and Washington State still remaining on their schedule.

UCLA head coach Chip Kelly picked up his first collegiate win since 2012 when he left Oregon to coach in the NFL. Ironically, Kelley had won just two of the previous 22 games he had coached after going 2-14 in his one and only year with the 49ers.

And the always stoic Kelly’s response to getting back into the win column?

“Any win is good. 1-0 on Saturday night, that’s what we’re rooting for,” Kelly said in an interview with Pac-12 Network’s Jill Savage.

Cal was beaten in the trenches on both sides of the ball as UCLA took a decidely physical approach on offense, running the ball on 55 of their 70 offensive snaps. That approach took the pressure off freshman quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who had started all five games for UCLA but completed just half of his pass attempts and only three touchdowns in his first four starts. Against Cal’s confounding roster of defensive alignments, the Bruins stayed physical and impervious to the Bears’ maneuverings.

“Guys are coming up trying to make a play and we didn’t make them,” coach Justin Wilcox said. “We have to finish better. It’s not a lack of want to but it goes back to accountability and performance. No phase of our team played well enough to win tonight.”

Cal linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk had 22 tackles in the ballgame, the most by a Cal defender since Jerrott Willard recorded 22 in October 1993, but the feat was merely indicative of how the Cal defense couldn’t get off the field, and how poor their defensive line play was against Kelly and the sizeable UCLA offensive line.

Kelly ran for 106 yards in the first half alone as UCLA took a 13-0 lead that could have been worse had a couple of Bruins’ drives not stalled out deep in Cal territory. When Cal sliced the lead to 13-7 midway through the third, the Bears self-destructed with a targeting penalty and unsportsmanlike behavior penalty that allowed UCLA to answer back.

In the fourth quarter, McIlwain’s run of turnovers continued as he was stripped while scrambling which resulted in a 38-yard scoop and score for Kesian Lucier-South.

Cal’s next opponent will be Oregon State. That game has been scheduled for Saturday, October 20 at 1:00 pm PT on PACN.

Bye week aids Stanford’s recovery after rough loss to Utah

The Stanford Cardinal suffered a rough 40-21 loss to the Utah Utes at Stanford Stadium last Saturday night. Obviously, the Cardinal was shook up following the home loss to Utah, who got an early lead and never looked back, despite the fact Stanford showed an ample amount of life in the third quarter.

The Cardinal will travel to Sun Devil Stadium to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils next Thursday at 6:00 pm PT on ESPN. As you can see, this will be a nationally televised game, so there’s a chance Stanford will unleash their anger on ASU, but then again it’s college football and we’ll never know what’s going to happen. All I can reassure you about is the fact that this likely will be a better game than the San Jose State Spartans facing a conference or non-conference team.

Anyhow, Stanford’s focused on their upcoming game. But, in the meantime, Stanford has been checking out their former standouts who currently play in the NFL.

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz continued his historic pace by having a day in the Eagles’ 23-21 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Ertz caught his first touchdown of the season and led the Eagles in targets (11), receptions (10) and receiving yards (110) on 97% of offensive snaps with Carson Wentz targeting him on 35% of pass attempts. Since 2001, there have been three instances where a tight end has caught 10 or more passes three times in a game during a full season–Ertz has accomplished the feat in the last four weeks. Ertz, who’s on pace for 131 catches and nearly 1,400 yards, is one of four players in the league with at least 10 targets in every game so far. Ertz has joined the likes of Adam Thielen, Odell Beckham Jr. and DeAndre Hopkins.

Atlanta Falcons tight end Austin Hooper had a career-high nine receptions in the Falcons’ 41-17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hooper also led the Falcons in targets (12) and receiving yards (77) on 76% of offensive snaps. Hooper’s 21 receptions rank second on the Falcons and ninth in the NFL among tight ends.

Green Bay Packers inside linebacker Blake Martinez finished with a career-high two sacks in the Packers’ 31-23 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Martinez finished with four solo tackles, four run stops and a 78.8 defensive grade from Pro Football Focus. According to PFF, Martinez ranks third in total defensive rating (86.8) and fifth in run stops (18) among qualified linebackers.

Houston Texans safety Justin Reid made his first career interception in the Texans’ 19-16 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. Reid finished with two quarterback hurries and six tackles on 90% of defensive snaps, helping limit the Cowboys to 292 total yards in the overtime win. Reid has been one of the top rookie defensive backs in the NFL after five weeks.

Falcons safety Jordan Richards tied a career high with a team-high seven tackles on 77% of defensive snaps in Atlanta’s 41-17 loss at Pittsburgh. According to Pro Football Focus, Richards finished with three run stops while allowing two catches for 19 yards on four targets.

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman continued his stellar season with another shutout performance in San Francisco’s 28-18 loss to Arizona. Sherman didn’t allow a catch on two targets while appearing on every defensive snap. Sherman missed Week 4 with a calf injury sustained in Week 3. On 146 coverage snaps in 2018, Sherman leads qualifying cornerbacks in fewest catches allowed (1) and passer rating allowed (39.6).

And, of course, Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey is currently leading the NFL in average yards from scrimmage/game, just a sliver ahead of Alvin Kamara and Todd Gurley.

Barracuda cool the Heat 6-4

The San Jose Barracuda were back at it. This time, the opponent was the Stockton Heat at Stockton Arena on Saturday night.

San Jose was ready to beat Stockton, but there were other aspects of the rivalry game for fans to notice, like, say, Filip Sanberg’s season debut and Evan Weinger’s professional debut.

The Cuda opened the scoring with two goals late in the first period. Jake Middleton scored his first goal on the season. Middleton’s goal was assisted by Jayden Halbgewachs. Cuda captain John McCarthy also scored his first goal on the season. McCarthy’s goal was assisted by Weinger.

The Cuda led the Heat 2-0 after 20 minutes of play. Shots were 7-5 in favor of San Jose.

The Cuda took a 3-0 lead at the 11:21 mark of the second period. Weinger scored his first pro goal–an unassisted goal–for a two-point night at the time.

The Cuda had a huge penalty kill following the Heat’s 5-for-3. Vincent Praplan was called for cross-checking and Middleton went to the box for hooking. Unfortunately, Stockton spoiled San Jose’s hopes of a shutout. Curtis Lazar helped his team get on the board to cut the lead to 3-1 just 2:14 later. Lazar’s goal was assisted by Tyler Graovac and Kerby Rychel.

The Cuda held onto a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. Shots remained in favor of San Jose, 15-11.

Cuda goalie Josef Korenar continued to make the necessary saves to keep his team in the game, including the one in the video below.

The Cuda made it a 4-1 game just 2:21 into the third period. Manuel Wiederer scored his first goal on the season. Wiederer’s goal was assisted by Lukas Radil.

Soon enough, Stockton got on San Jose’s nerves with three goals in the period. Kerby Rychel scored his second and third goals on the season at the 8:03 and 11:57 marks, respectively. Rychel’s goals were assisted by Mike McMurtry and Ryan Lomberg then Lomberg. The Cuda managed to reduce the deficit to 5-3 at the 14:12 mark of the period. Francis Perron scored his third goal on the season. Perron’s goal was assisted by Halbgewachs and Jeremy Roy. Rychel later notched his fourth goal on the season with 4:40 left in the period.

But San Jose looked confident and McCarthy sealed the win by putting the puck into the net for a short-handed, empty-net goal with 57 seconds left in regulation. McCarthy’s second goal on the season helped the Cuda to a 6-4 win over the Heat.

Korenar picked up a win, finishing with 20 saves on 24 shots and four goals allowed. Tyler Parsons absorbed the loss after making 18 saves on 24 shots and six goals allowed.

Earthquakes hold their own vs. Cruz Azul in 0-0 draw in friendly

By Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE, Calif. — In what must have felt like a home game for the visiting Cruz Azul, the Mexican Liga MX team, came into Avaya Stadium with the majority of the fans rooting for them and left with a 0-0 draw over the San Jose Earthquakes in an international friendly at Avaya Stadium on Saturday evening.

In front of a sold-out crowd, Cruz Azul–the current leader atop the standings in the Liga MX–dominated the first half of play as they had two scoring chances hit off the left post in the first 26 minutes of the match. Martin Cauteruccio had the best opportunity for Cruz Azul. San Jose had a tough time stopping Edgar Mendez from creating multiple chances in their defensive zone. Cruz Azul would have six corner kick opportunities in the first half (finishing with nine to the Quakes’ zero) but weren’t able to cash in on any of them.

The Quakes’ only good opportunity to score came in the 41st minute when Eric Calvillo received a pass from Chris Wehan and dribbled inside the d-box from the left point when fired a shot that Cruz Azul goalie Jose De Jesus Corona was able to make a diving save.

“I know I could’ve hit it harder,” said Calvillo. “It’s unfortunate I couldn’t get the goal I’ve dreaming about (my whole life). But I know it’s not going to be my last opportunity and I’m read for more.”

In the second half, Quakes head coach Steve Ralston flipped the lineup over and it seemed to change the momentum of the game as substitutes Danny Hoesen and Tommy Thompson generated chances for the Quakes.

“It’s been a difficult week right? A lot of stuff happening,” said Ralston. “For those guys to come out and play the way they did, I’m really pleased.”

Cruz Azul head coach Pedro Caixinha also flipped over most of his lineup in the second half bringing in the team’s leading scorer Elias Hernandez and former Quake Rafael Baca. Neither put a dent into the box score.

Cruz Azul had two late scoring chances in the final minutes, but both shot attempts sailed wide.

GAME NOTES: The Quakes’ Florian Jungwirth was issued a yellow card in the 67th minute for arguing with the referee.

Cruz Azul’s Antonio Sanchez also received a yellow card at the 76th minute for tripping San Jose’s Dominic Oduro.

Cruz Azul’s Pablo Aguilar received a yellow card in the 76th minute for a hard tackle on Jungwirth.

The Quakes’ overall record in international friendlies is 11-10-10, dating back to 1996. They have an 8-2-6 record in the past 14 friendly matches. However, against the Liga MX teams, they are 1-7-4 in international friendlies.

This was the first match since the Quakes hired Matias Almeyda as their new head coach for the 2019 season. Ralston, will remain in his role as interim head coach for the Quakes’ final two regular season matches.

UP NEXT: The Quakes will host their final regular season game on Sunday, October 21 against the Colorado Rapids at 2:00 pm PT at Avaya Stadium.

Three takeaways from San Jose State’s blowout loss to Army

By: Ana Kieu

A San Jose State Spartans football game versus the Army Black Knights? Yeah! There’s a first time for everything.

The Spartans played in a large stadium that’s also the home of the San Francisco 49ers. SJSU, however, got run over by Army 52-3. Bryce Crawford scored an early field goal, but that was all the home team got. The Black Knights basically took over from there.

Here are three takeaways from SJSU’s blowout loss to Army.

Inability to close out a game
Once again, SJSU was unable to close out a game. As I’ve mentioned in the introduction, the first quarter belonged to SJSU. But, of course, a 3-0 lead wasn’t a comfortable one. Army scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to snatch a 14-3 lead at halftime.

The Spartans never re-energized and brought the fire to the Blue and Gold crowd unless if you’ll count the U.S. Army Officer Ceremony as well as the Spartan Cheer Squad and Spartan Marching Band.

Spartans head coach Brent Brennan said, “It’s really impressive to see where they were and where they came from. Early in the game, I thought our defense was playing great. We were moving the ball on the offense, but there were a couple of costly penalties that hurt our ability to stay on the field and keep their offense off the field, which was really disappointing. The hard part about that scheme was the consistent monotony of it and the infuriating intricacy of how different it was. In the third quarter–after our second or third or fourth turnover–I felt like the dam broke a little with our defense but they played pretty well until then.”

Repeat fumbles
The Spartans suffered from four fumbles, which was disappointing to say the least. Just moments after quarterback Michael Carrillo checked in to the position, a fumble occurred. Carrillo was then sacked from his blindside. Aaron went to the field in hopes of fixing things up for SJSU, but no, Aaron lost the ball at the end of a run.

Okay, the subtraction of these four fumbles wouldn’t have made a significant difference, but SJSU would’ve put up points on the board that they could’ve earned.

Vanishing defense
The Spartans were unable to stop Black Knights quarterback Kelvin Hopkins, Jr., who had the best game of his career thus far. Hopkins, Jr. scored four touchdowns. Hopkins, Jr. also ran for 99 yards along with a season-high three touchdowns and threw for a fourth. It was the first time an Army quarterback has scored three rushing touchdowns in one game since A.J. Schurr had four against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on November 23, 2013.

As a result, Hopkins, Jr. exposed the Spartans’ defense as the Black Knights cruised to a blowout win.

“He made some good runs and yards after contact,” Black Knights head coach Jeff Monken told Fox Sports. “He’s been a much more effective runner than maybe we even anticipated. His physical maturity has helped him, too. He’s a lot stronger than he was a year ago.”

The Spartans took a tough loss from the Black Knights, but there’s nothing they can do about the final score other than to move forward. SJSU will travel to Southern California to take on SDSU next Saturday at 7:30 pm PT on CBSS.

San Jose State gets run over by Army 52-3

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — If you’re a San Jose State football fan, chances are you’ve heard the term “revenue games.” SJSU, a FBS and Mountain West school, has relied on such games to fund its athletic departments. Saturday’s non-conference matchup was another example as the Spartans took on the Black Knights at Levi’s Stadium in a nationally televised game on ESPNU.

Sure, SJSU fans and media members were fired up for this game. After all, it was held in Levi’s Stadium–one of the best, high-end stadiums in the country–and the food has never skimped on flavor! But the Spartans were unable to achieve their goal of defeating the Black Knights.

The Spartans decided to start Montel Aaron as their starting quarterback.

The Spartans got on the board first as Bryce Crawford kicked in a 49-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 4:14 left in the opening quarter. SJSU led Army 3-0 at the end of the quarter.

The Black Knights immediately responded with a 41-yard passing touchdown from Jordan Asberry. Jordan Abercrombie kicked in the extra point for a 7-3 lead just seven seconds into the second quarter. The Black Knights struck with a late touchdown–a 1-yard rushing touchdown from Kelvin Hopkins, Jr.–and another extra point kick from Abercrombie with 12 seconds left in the quarter. Army carried a 14-3 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The Black Knights got off to a good start to open the second half. Hopkins, Jr. notched his second touchdown of the game–a 24-yard rushing touchdown–and Abercrombie kicked in the extra point for a 21-3 lead with 9:06 left in the third quarter.

Turnovers, however, affected the Spartans like in previous games. SJSU’s first turnover of the game led to an Army scoring drive. At the time, the Black Knights were unable to add a touchdown, but they settled for a 33-yard field goal from Abercrombie, who added to the scoreboard 24-3 with 7:39 left in the quarter.

But the Black Knights weren’t done yet. Darnell Woolfolk bowled into the end zone for a one-yard rushing touchdown and Abercrombie kicked in the extra point to expand Army’s lead 31-3 with 6:18 left in the quarter.

Hopkins, Jr. scored what appeared to be his third rushing touchdown of the game–a four-yard rushing touchdown–but the play underwent a review. After further review, the ruling on the touchdown stood and Abercrombie kicked in the extra point to enlarge the lead 38-3 with 1:44 left in the quarter.

Following the Army touchdown, Aaron returned to the field and replaced Michael Carrillo. Aaron completed a pass to Thai Cottrell for seven yards to the SJSU 39 for a Spartan first down and then completed another pass to Tre Walker for nine yards to the SJSU 32. The Black Knights led 38-3 at the end of the quarter.

The Spartans committed another turnover that led to a Black Knights touchdown–a 52-yard fumble touchdown from James Nachtigal–and a PAT kick from Abercrombie, who made it 45-3 just 28 seconds into the fourth quarter.

The Spartans opened the scoring, but the Black Knights took the lead and never looked back. Army defeated SJSU 52-3 and it wasn’t even close.

“I thought the personal foul at the end of the game was embarrassing and awful and wrong,” head coach Brent Brennan said. “I’ve already addressed it with the team as there’s no place for that.”

“This was a total gut punch for our program, Brennan added. “I thought we were making great progress and I was actually encouraged about our practices and what it shows is that we’re not ready to make the next move.”

Aside from Brennan, the Spartan players had other thoughts on this game.

“We’re ready to move on,” defensive lineman Bryson Bridges said. “We played to the best of our abilities.”

When asked about pursuing the next level, cornerback Dakari Monroe responded, “Yes. Definitely. Since I came here, I’ve always wanted to play at the next level. I definitely want to pursue that.”

Last but not least, running back Tyler Nevens closed out the postgame press conference. Nevens reflected on his injury, asserting the media members, “I’m feeling good. I’m feeling more comfortable. My injury took me a lot of time to heal and get back to being the football player that I am. I showed them what I got.”

Notes
The Spartans’ possible starters were JaQuan Blackwell, Jackson Snyder, Troy Kowalski, Trevor Robbins, Jake Colman, Deano Motes, Josh Oliver, Josh Love, Tyler Nevens, Thai Cottrell and Tre Hartley on offense and Bryson Bridges, Boogie Roberts, Sailosi Latu, Jesse Osuna, Kyle Harmon, Ethan Aguayo, Jamal Scott, Dakar Monroe, John Touissaint, Tre Webb and Jonathan Lenard, Jr. on defense.

Up Next
The Spartans will travel to Qualcomm Stadium to take on the San Diego State Aztecs next Saturday at 7:30 pm PT on CBSS.

Kings lose the final preseason game of the year to Portland, 118-115, but not ugly this time

Por vs Sac

By Charlie O. Mallonee

After being blown out 132-93 by the Utah Jazz on Thursday night, the Sacramento Kings needed to bounce back in the second game of a back-to-back in Portland on Friday to prove that they are not a “walk-over team” in the 2018-19 season. The Kings did not win on Friday night, but they did not embarrass themselves either. Sacramento fought to the end but came up short losing to the Trail Blazers 118-115.

Sacramento did not go into the game with positive news. Point guard De’Aaron Fox and head coach Dave Joerger were both pregame scratches because of the stomach flu. That is not the way you want to start a game you need to win–no head coach and down one superstar.

The Kings fell behind 32-20 at the end of the first quarter, and it looked like it might be another ugly loss for Sacramento on the road. The Kings bounced back in the second quarter and outscored the Trail Blazers 35-25.

The Kings kept the game close and had a chance to win the contest right up to the end. With one-tenth of a second remaining, Frank Mason put up a 3-point shot that missed. Had that shot been good–the Kings would have won the game.

Por vs Sac2

Kings Performances

  • Buddy Hield was the Kings co-high scorer in the game with 19 points. Hield went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. He also had four assists.
  • Yogi Ferrell also scored 19 points in the game. Ferrell shot 7-for-15 from the field. He also added five assists.
  • Marvin Bagley III–MBIII5 scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. He shot 7-for-11 from the field.
  • Willie Cauley-Stein and Frank Mason each scored 14 points in the game.
  • Nemanja Bjelica put up 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.

What the Trail Blazers did

  • CJ McCollum led the Trail Blazers scoring attack with 21 points. He also had nine rebounds and six assists.
  • Meyers Leonard added 17 points and nine rebounds.
  • Nik Stauskas (remember him?) recorded 15 points. He hit 4-of-7 from 3-point land.
  • Zach Collins scored 15 points in 31 minutes on the floor. He shot 7-of-12 from the floor.

Por Leonard

Team stats

  • SAC shot 42.2-percent from the floor (38-for-90).
  • The Kings hit 10-of-24 (41.7-percent) from 3-point land.
  • Sacramento went 29-for-33 (87.9-percent) from the free throw line.

Lakers down the Warriors 119-105 to finish the preseason

By Jerry Feitelberg

SAN JOSE — The Los Angeles Lakers, who were without LeBron James, Brandon Ingram, and Kentavius Caldwell-Pope, rallied in the second half to down the Golden State Warriors 119-105 at SAP Center on Friday night.

The Warriors did not play Kevin Durant or Andre Iguodala. Steph Curry played the first period for Golden State and was done for the night. Klay Thompson did not play in the second half. Draymond Green, who had not played since September 29th, saw 14 minutes of action and scored just one point.

Curry played most of the first quarter and tallied 16 points, including four three-point shots. He looked as if he was in mid-season form. Thompson finished the night with 21, and he looked ready to go. The Warriors won the first half by 13 (67-54). Damian Jones had a good first half as he knocked down 15 and appears to be the starting center for the Warriors until DeMarcus Cousins is ready to play.

The second half belonged to the Lakers. Kyle Kuzma was on fire as he and Svi Mykhailuk led the Lakers to a comeback win as they outscored the Warriors 61-38. The Warriors used Draymond Green in the third quarter and Shaun Livingston in the fourth quarter. The rest of the players were trying to show the Warriors’ coaching staff that they belonged in the NBA. The Warriors will have to make decisions soon on which players will start the season in Oakland and who will be assigned to the G-League.

Game Notes: The Warriors still have not agreed to a contract with Patrick McCaw. McCaw would be starting his third season with the Warriors, and he could help this year’s edition. There are question marks regarding Damian Jones, Jordan Bell, Jacob Evans, Jonas Jerebko, and Marcus Derrickson.

The Big Four consisting of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, and Draymond Green are set. Andre Iguodala, Shaun Livingston, Kevon Looney, and Quinn Cook will make up the second unit.

Up Next: The Warriors open the season at Oracle Arena on Tuesday night at 7:30 pm PDT versus the Oklahoma City Thunder. Moreover, the Warriors’ championship banner will be unfurled, and the players will receive their championship rings.
