Niezgoda’s two goals power Timbers to a 3-0 shutout win over Earthquakes

The San Jose Earthquakes took another tough defeat at Providence Park going undefeated in 13 visits there against the Portland Timbers and Sun Oct 11, 2020 was no different in another loss to the Timbers (photo from the Portland Timbers)

by Marko Ukalovic

PORTLAND, Ore.- Jaroslaw Niezgoda scored two goals in a six-minute span in the second half as the Portland Timbers dominated the San Jose Earthquakes in a 3-0 shutout victory during a rainy Sunday evening at Providence Park.

Portland has won five matches in a row to tie the Seattle Sounders for atop of the Western Conference with 30 points. The loss snapped San Jose’s three match winning streak. However the Quakes did not lose any ground in the standings as they stayed at the seventh spot with 20 points, one ahead of both Colorado and Houston, with six matches left to play.

The Earthquakes are winless in 13 trips to Providence Park (0-10-3) dating back to 2011.

Oswaldo Alanís made his return to the starting lineup at centerback for Quakes head coach Matias Almedya, after missing the past five games with a lower body injury. It was his first action since September 16th.

San Jose (5-7-5) held their own in the first 45 minutes getting quality scoring chances only to be thwarted away by Timbers goalkeeper Steve Clark when they put shots on goal.

Two of the Quakes best chances to get on the scoreboard in the first half came at the beginning and at the end. Chris Wondoloski’s header from a Cristian Espinoza cross in the sixth minute and Jackson Yueill’s point blank shot in the second minute of stoppage time were stoned away by Clark.

Portland (9-4-3) seized momentum and control of the match a minute into the second half. Diego Chará came streaking with the ball down the right sideline when his cross was headed in by Niezgoda into the upper right corner of the net for his first of two goals on the evening. His fourth goal of the season came at the 46th minute.

The Timbers continued to pressure the Quakes inside their zone led by Diego Valeri. The Argentinean midfielder hurried Tanner Beason into a turnover after a diving save by Quakes goalkeeper J.T. Marcinkowski. Beason’s clearing attempt went right to the foot of Niezgoda who fired the ball into an empty net for his fifth goal of the season. It was the first career multi-goal game for the 25 year-old striker from Poland.

San Jose had a golden opportunity to cut Portland’s lead in half in the 67th minute when Carlos Fierro was all alone after receiving the ball of the left side. Fierro was one-on-one with Clark when he punted the ball high and far over the net resulting in a goal kick for Portland.

The Quakes appeared to have scored in the 71st minute after a corner kick led to Beason kicking the ball in the net right on the goal line. However, VAR review determined he was offsides and the goal was erased off the board.

The MLS is Back Tournament champions sealed the game in the 86th minute when once again Chará creating the opportunity with a chip cross over two Quakes defenders that was headed in by Felipe Mora, normally a starter for head coach Giovanni Savarese, came in as a sub in the 61st minute, for his seventh goal the season. It was Chará’s second assist of the evening.

San Jose was left frustrated on what could have been had they been able to cash in on the earlier opportunities they had in the match.

This was also the first match where Almeyda only used one substitute during the match with Shea Salinas coming in for Tommy Thompson in the 65th minute.

Clark finished with seven saves for his fourth shutout of the season. Marcinkowski made five saves in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose had seven corner kicks. Portland had three.

Florian Jungwirth was suspended for the match for yellow card accumulation.

San Jose were also without Vako, Guram Kashia and Marco Lopez as they were out playing internationally.

Each team were issued two yellow cards.

UP NEXT: The Earthquakes conclude their two-game road trip when the travel to Los Angeles to take on the Galaxy on Wednesday 10/14 at 7:30pm at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Poor Offensive Effort Hand Forty Niners A 43-17 Loss

No one from the San Francisco 49ers defense really got in the way of Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick who threw for three touchdowns at Levis Stadium in Santa Clara on Sun Oct 11, 2020 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

Sunday afternoon the San Francisco 49ers (2-2) took on the Miami Dolphins (1-3) at Levi Stadium. The team welcomed back quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo who had missed the past two games due to a sprained ankle. He is coming off a full week of practice and the hope is that this will get the team back on the winning track after dropping one to the Philadelphia Eagles 25-20.

Despite being underdogs the Dolphins put up two touchdowns in the first quarter. Ryan Fitzpatrick connected with Adam Shaheen for three yards and the touchdown for the early lead 7-0. At 4:14 in the first quarter Myles Gaskin had a one yard rush to extend Miami’s lead 14-0 with San Francisco yet to get anything going.

San Francisco would finally get on the board with a seven yard rush by Kyle Juszcyzk. The Forty Niners had the opportunity to get back into this game. That opportunity vanished when the Dolphins answered with three unanswered scores, the first a DeVante Parker 22 yard pass from Fitzpatrick followed by two field goals.

The first was a 26 yard field goal and the second one a long 50 yard attempt that was good for a 27-7 lead. Jimmy Garoppolo threw his first interception of the season in the second quarter that led to a Miami score. With 14 seconds left in the half Garoppolo threw his second interception of the game. The long anticipated return of Garoppolo showed a struggling quarterback who didn’t look at all ready to return to action. The halftime score was 30-7 in favor of the Miami Dolphins. Garoppolo finished the half seven of 17 for 77 yards and two interceptions.

The opening drive of the third quarter showed a fired up San Francisco defense but the question remained; could the San Francisco offense take advantage. As expected Beathard took over at quarterback in San Francisco’s first possession of the third quarter. Thanks in part to two Miami penalties and a 12 yard pass completion followed by a 19 yard pass for the touchdown, San Francisco was finally getting something going defensively and offensively although that came to an abrupt end in the second half.

Trailing by the score of 30-14 the worst was yet to come for the Forty Niners. Fitzpatrick would throw a 32 yard touchdown to Preston Williams and the Miami quarterback was having a banner day. San Francisco’s Robbie Gould would kick a 37 yard field goal and going into the fourth quarter San Francisco trailed by the score of 37-17.

San Francisco had a lackluster fourth quarter and Miami would kick a 31 yard and a 49 yard field goal. There was not much that Miami was unable to do. They won this game by the score of 43-17 in an unexpected turn outplaying San Francisco on offense and defense. Despite having some of their key players returning to the field it did absolutely nothing for the team. The Forty Niners have a lot of questions moving forward, the most pressing at the position of quarterback.

By Shawm McCullough

After last week’s loss to Buffalo, Raiders quarterback Derek Car said, “I’m sick of losing”.

That seemed to have sparked his teammates as the Raiders went into Arrowhead Stadium and knocked off the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, 40-32.

“I’m really proud of our guys,” said head coach Jon Gruden. “We beat a really good football team.  We had a lot of guys step up.”

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr snapped a personal 6 game losing streak, being 0-6 in his career against Kansas City before the game.

“I have taken a lot of sad walks up that ramp, but not today,” said Carr. “I am going to enjoy this one.”

Carr threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns, one each to Henry Ruggs, Nelson Agholor and Darren Waller.

“He has been through a lot here as a Raider,” said Gruden of Carr. “This was certainly a big win for him.”

Ruggs returned from missing two games with a hamstring injury, catching two balls for 118 yards including a 72 yard touchdown.

“It just shows that we are not here to lay down, we are here to compete,” said Ruggs.

The Raiders last beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in a 26-16 win on October 28, 2012.  Carson Palmer was the Raiders quarterback in that game.

“What better opportunity to see what this team is made of?,” said Carr. “This team is legit.”

With the win, the Raiders improved to 3-2 on the season heading into their bye week.

Game Notes:

  • The Raiders outgained the Chiefs in total yards, 490-413.
  • Raiders’ running back Josh Jacobs rushed 23 times for 77 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Eleven different Raiders players caught at least one ball from QB Derek Carr.
  • The Chiefs loss ended a 13 game winning streak.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: The A’s got to Second Base What’s next?

Oakland A’s manager Bob Melvin (left) and Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker (right) meet with the umpires at home plate prior to game 1 of the ALDS Mon Oct 5, 2020 at Dodger Stadium Los Angeles (AP News photo)

The A’s got to Second Base. What’s next?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

This is how I rate a Postseason. First base is the Wild Card, Second base is the Division, Third Base is the Championship and Home is the World Series. So, at the end the A’s were stranded at second base as they brought the AL Western Division Title, their first since 2013.

When Tony LaRussa was the manager, he did a brief pre-game segment “El Show de Tony LaRussa” trans: “The Tony LaRussa Show”. Tony will talk about many things, in Spanish (one of the official languages of baseball) but he always said that winning the division was the most important during a season, the caveat was, that he considered winning the Division one stepping stone to the World Series, but not getting far after that was more like a mission failure.

1990 was the last time the Oakland Athletics played in a World Series. As a matter of common knowledge, we know that a generation averages about 25 years—from the birth of a parent to the birth of a child— It has been 31 years since the last time the A’s played in late October.

A lot of questions for the A’s this winter. Will they keep their lead off-hitter and shortstop Marcus Semien, who is now a free agent as well as closer Liam Hendricks, who finished second in the league in games saves with 14 and a 1.78 earned run average? Other free agents, in addition to Semien, and Hendricks, are Joakim Soria, Mike Fiers, Yusmeiro Petit, Robbie Grossman and T.J. McFarland.

That is half of the bullpen there. We do not know how many will be staying, after all it is a business and their agents have to negotiate deals with the Athletics ownership regarding these players, who by the way were all very important in the team success this season.

The A’s usually do not sign players to long deals. Khris Davis deal extension on April 2019 called for a two-year (2020-2021) for $33.5 million. During this 2020 season (granted it was 60 games) he hit two home runs and drove in ten runs during the regular season, a disappointment for what is expected of him.

During the recent Playoff he hit three home runs and drove four runs, in seven games. From 2016 to 2018 he hit a total of 156 home runs and drove 408 runs. One of the last four year deals was when the team acquired Cuban outfielder Yoenis Céspedes in 2012 for four years and $36 million, a bargain for a man of his talent.

Since then Céspedes has played with the Red Sox, the Tigers and Mets. The A’s should have kept Céspedes; he was one of the most popular players in Oakland in recent history. Also a case could be made that they should have kept Josh Donaldson. Donaldson was an excellent player while with the A’s from 2010-2014. When they did not keep him here, he left for Toronto and the next season (2015) he was the American League MVP with a .297 average 42 home runs and 123 RBI.

Nobody knows that keeping players of such caliber could have helped the A’s to their fifth World Series title, we will never know, but keeping your stars is always good for the morale of the team, the attendance and the overall value of the team.

It also doesn’t mean that the teams with the biggest payrolls are guaranteed success. The NY Yankees with one of the top payrolls in baseball was just eliminated by the Tampa Bay Rays, who every year seems to be in the bottom of the league in total payroll.

Yet, the Rays could be the AL Champions if they can beat the Houston Astros. For teams like the Yankees and the Dodgers, success is not defined by winning a wild-card spot of winning a division; it is the whole enchilada, the World Series.

Simple capitalism, if you invest big money, you expect big dividends. On the other hand, if you make a lot of money with little investment, that is even better. Fans are fans, and they also expect to see good teams, because the pay money to watch their team, so everybody has an interest in winning. Winning, is the American way.

The World Series should always be the goal for every team that is competing in the major leagues, but different teams have different philosophies. During this unusual 2020 season, having 16 teams go into the postseason, was a positive move by MLB and the Players Union. It created something positive during a very tough year.

FOX Network was rooting for a Yankees vs. Dodgers World Series, a coast-to-coast affair, a potential ratings bonanza, two huge media markets, loaded with superstars, a producers dream about two rich glory franchises, the Yanks with 27 Titles and the Dodgers with six.

It would have been a very sexy type of conclusion to this crazy truncated season, but it is not going to happen. It could be the Tampa Bay Rays vs. Atlanta Braves, because such is baseball, still the most unpredictable of all sports. A lot of people in LA want to see the Astros again and that might happen (they have their reasons) although they still have a formidable potent experienced lineup filled with hitting stars, the Rays still have much more pitching and that is always worth the price of gold at this time of the year.

As for the Athletics? Wait for next season.

One more thing: If you need a laugh, because the A’s or your team didn’t make it this far this season? I recommend you watch the movie Major League (1989). The new owner of the Cleveland Indians put together a purposely horrible team so they’ll lose and she can move the team. But when the plot is uncovered, they start winning just to spite her. She wants to move the team to Miami for a warmer climate and a new stadium. Mind you, when that movie was made, there was not a Major League team in Miami, since then the Marlins were born in 1993.

Stay well and stay tuned.

MLB The Show Post Season podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: Rays and Yankees fought this one out right to the end; Dodgers say Astros crying victim

The Tampa Bay Rays celebrate their win in game 5 of the ALDS over the New York Yankees on Fri Oct 9th at Petco Park in San Diego to advance to the ALCS against the Houston Astros (photo from yahoo.sports.com)

On the MLB The Show podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Jeremiah the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays were tied up in the series on Friday night at two games a piece and both teams fought for the last rites to get into the AL Championship at all costs necessary with the Rays just beating the Yankees out to get to the AL Championship winning 2-1 on Friday night.

#2 The Yankees Aaron Judge hit another home run against the Rays on Friday night he was very key for the Yanks throughout the playoffs for Judge that doesn’t matter very much to him.

#3 The Yankees also honored former Yankee pitching great Whitey Ford who pitched for the Yankees in the 50s and early 60s and had a career record of 236-106 with an ERA of 2.75 passed away at 91 on Friday night. Ford also had his number retired by the Yankees.

#4 The Los Angeles Dodgers say the Houston Astros are playing the victim in light of being accused of being cheaters and that fans, media and others teams are picking on them. Is this all part of the bad blood between the two teams or the Dodgers are right the Astros are playing victim.

#5 The Dodgers have won the NLDS and are headed to the Championship game against the Atlanta Braves and are the favorites to get to the World Series if they do match up against the Houston Astros how ugly could this series be or will they just battle by playing this one out?
