San Jose Barracuda Thursday post game wrap: Condors line up to find back of the net blank Cuda in pre season opener 6-0

sjbarracuda.com photo: San Jose Barracuda goaltender Antoine Bibeau (34) was kept busy all night facing a barrage of shots in a 6-0 loss in Bakersfield in Thursday night’s first pre season game

by Marko Ukalovic

The opening game of the pre-season wasn’t a pretty sight for the San Jose Barracuda as they were blanked by the Bakersfield Condors 6-0 at Rabobank Arena. San Jose couldn’t complain about not getting their chances. They received 4 power plays in the first period only to come up with what the Condor left on the rock. Overall they failed on 5 power play opportunities during the game.

Newly acquired goaltender Eddie Pasquale (1-0) stopped all 17 shots he faced in route to the shut out. Pasquale led the Grand Rapids Griffins to the Calder Cup Championship last season. The Condors are hoping to get that kind of quality goaltending out of Pasquale this season.

The Condors got on the board at 13:51 of the first period when Braden Christoffer back handed in a rebound while being left alone after Barracuda goalie Antoine Bibeau initially stopped Ben Betker’s shot from the left point. Bakersfield added to its lead at 14:38 as Keegan Lowe beat a screened Bibeau through the five-hole along the right half-wall, and then the Condors completed the three-goal first when Josh Currie ripped a shot from close range over the blocker of San Jose’s netminder after receiving a below the goal-line feed from Zach O’Brien. San Jose was outshot in the first 20 minutes 14-to-11.

The carnage continued for Bakersfield in the second period, adding two more goals to go up 5-0. First, Dana Tyrell tipped an Evan Polei shot at 4:26 and then Lane Bauer ended Bibeau’s night and gave Bakersfield a 5-0 lead at 6:06. Down 5-0, San Jose looked to push back physically as Bryan Moore dropped the gloves with 6-foot-5 defenseman Ryan Mantha at 6:47, and then San Jose’s Josh Thrower threw punches with Istvan Sofron at 13:43. Bibeau lasted just 33 minutes and 43 seconds after allowing five goals on 22 shots.

In the third, goalie Stephon Williams worked the final six minutes and 17 seconds of the frame. Williams was forced to make a handful of stellar saves, but Condors’ Kyle Platzer made it 6-0 with a backhand-to-forehand move on a breakaway down the right wing at 11:07. Williams allowed one goal on 14 shots.

NEXT UP: The Barracuda take on the Stockton Heat on Saturday, Sept. 30 at SAP Center at 1:30 p.m for their second and final pre-season game.

San Francisco Giants report: 100-loss mark is still reachable for Giants

Photo credit: San Francisco Giants (@SFGiants)

By Jeremy Harness

SAN FRANCISCO–The Giants can make some history this weekend, but it’s surely not the kind they were looking for.

See, they currently sport a 62-97 record, which is at press time the worst record in the entire major leagues, and they have a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at AT&T Park this weekend to close out the series.

If you do the math, the Giants have a chance to lose 100 games in a season for the first time in quite some time. The Giants have lost 100 games or more only once in franchise history, as the 1985 team went 62-100.

It was the year that Jim Davenport was fired in midseason and replaced by Roger Craig and finished sixth in the National League West, back when there were only two divisions in each league.

If history is any indicator, things could quickly be looking up for the Giants. With Craig no longer the interim manager, the Giants quickly righted the ship the next season, finishing 83-79 and a third-place finish in the division before winning the NL West in 1987.

In the meantime, however, it is not looking good at all, and the Giants do not want it to be historically bad when Sunday comes to a close.

What is also coming to a close along with the season on Sunday as Matt Cain’s career. The veteran righty has said that he will retire at year’s end, forgoing free agency as this is the final year of his contract. He will take the ball Saturday afternoon opposite Padres right-hander Jhoulys Chacin (13-10, 3.98 ERA).

Chacin has won his previous two decisions, including an outing last Saturday that saw him shut out the Rockies over six innings and give up only one hit in the process, walking three and striking out six.

Cain, meanwhile, will just hope to end his career on a high note before his home fans. He has suffered through a 3-11 campaign with a 5.66 ERA. On May 15, he beat the Dodgers by surrendering only a run on five hits, walking three and striking out five to improve his record to 3-1.

He has not gotten a victory since. And he may need to pull out some of the old magic to keep his team from going to a historic low.

Ducks get 3-0 revenge

~ By Pearl Allison Lo

~ ANAHEIM– San Jose found themselves on the losing end this time as the Ducks shutout the Sharks Thursday before a 15,439 preseason crowd.

It was the San Jose’s first preseason loss.

Both teams started the preseason when the Sharks shutout Anaheim 5-0. In this game, San Jose had 11 different players and the Ducks had 10.

The game-winner emerged in the third. Chris Wagner scored a wraparound goal at 5:28, aided by Dennis Rasmussen and Korbinian Holzer through Martin Jones’ five hole.

The first period saw two Sharks’ power plays and a 5-1 shot advantage until Francois Beauchemin had Anaheim’s second shot with 8:46 left. By the end of the period though, it was a one shot differential with San Jose leading 6-5.

More confrontation, shots and the first power play marked the second. Shots went the same direction as the first. The period started with the Sharks’ third power play. San Jose’s Joel Ward and the Ducks’ Andrew Cogliano had a scuffle in the second, short of a fight. Jacob Middleton gave the Sharks their first penalty when he cross-checked Corey Perry. Perry’s teammate Kale Kossila came in to defend.

Anaheim started the third period with new goalie Reto Berra. This time the period started with a Ducks’ power play. It became a two-man advantage when Tomas Hertl was called for hooking midway. San Jose killed the power plays but a minute after the last was when Wagner scored. He said, “We picked up a little energy after that goal. We started playing more in their end. We got better as the game went on.”

Anaheim doubled their lead at 16:17. With Jones positioned short side, Antoine Vermette got it into the open net far side. 40 seconds later, Kosila made it 3-0 when he directed the puck into the empty net.

The Ducks’ Head Coach Randy Carlyle felt, “we won the game ugly…scored some dirty goals.”

Timo Meier from the Sharks commented, “We played some good hockey at the end, but we let up a goal and then another one and then it broke down a little bit.” Head Coach Peter DeBoer thought, “Our defensive game was good. I thought Jones was solid. Again, you have to score to win in this league. We looked like we could have played for another hour and a half and not scored a goal.”

Game notes:  Anaheim outshot San Jose 14-9 in the third to win that battle overall 26-24. In Ward’s first action since surgery, he was on the ice for 14:01, had three shots, three attempts blocked and one missed shot. DeBoer said, “I thought as the game went on he go better. We know what he can do. We’ll be working him in.” The Sharks continue preseason with their second game against the Arizona Coyotes Saturday at 7pm.

A’s behind a strong performance by Sean Manaea, down Texas Rangers for the seventh time in a row 4-1

Arlington, Texas- The Oakland A’s started the final four games of the season with a win over the Texas Rangers Thursday night as the beat the Rangers for the seventh time in a row by a score of 4-1.

The A’s Sean Manaea made his last start of the year and wanted to finish the season with a strong effort. Manaea had an up and down year. He spent time on the DL. He pitched well and at times didn’t pitch well. His record entering Thursday’s game was 11-10. He went six and 2/3rds innings and allowed just three hits. The only run allowed was unearned. Sean finished with a record of 12-10, and manager Bob Melvin had this to say about his young lefty:”He was efficient early in the game, early-count contact, pitched out of a couple jams,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “That’s finishing on a strong note for a guy that was really grinding toward the end. Had a couple bouts this season with adversity and pitched through it, and he will be better for it come next year.”

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning. The Rangers’ Miguel Gonzalez, who lost 1-0 to the A’s last week in Oakland was pitching well until the A’s third baseman Matt Chapman homered leading off the inning. It was Chapman’s fourteen of the season. The Rangers, however, tied the contest in the bottom of the fifth. Shortstop Marcus Semien made an error that allowed Willie Calhoun to reach second. It snapped the  A’seight-game errorless streak. Drew Robinson singled to drive in Calhoun with the run.

The A’s plated two in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. With two out Jed Lowrie singled and that was followed by a Khris Davis double to put men on at second and third. Ryon Healy singled to drive in Lowrie and Davis. The A’s added a run in the ninth. Khris Davis singled, Healy reached on an infield single and Chapman drove in his second run of the game with a single. Oakland wins 4-1.

Game Notes- The A’s are now 16-5 in their last twenty-one games and are 35-35 in their last 70 games.

The A’s relievers did well against the Rangers Thursday night. Liam Hendriks got the final out of the seventh, Chris Hatcher pitched a scoreless eighth and Blake Treinen did the same in the ninth to preserve the win for Manaea and pick up his 15th save of the year.

A’s catcher Bruce Maxwell took a knee during the performance of the National Anthem. There were some boos as expected. Maxwell will continue to kneel until the end of the season.

Righty Raul Alcantara will start for Oakland Friday night and will be opposed by left Martin Perez.

The A’s announced that Bob Melvin has signed an extension to his contract that will take him through the 2019 season.

Sports Headlines with Tony Renteria: Trump tells Fox News that owners need to do something about players taking a knee

sports illustrated cover/twitter screen shots: Cover from Sports Illustrated and tweets sent out by Curry

On the Sports Headlines with Tony:

1 The cover of Sports Illustrated has the Oakland A’s Bruce Maxwell, the Baltimore Ravens owner, Warriors coach Steve Kerr, the Cavs LeBron, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and the Warriors Stephen Curry locking arms but there was one person missing from the photo. It was Curry who was asked at practice what he thought of former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick missing from the front cover and he replied “terrible.” Sports Illustrated said the reason why Kaepernick is out of the cover photo collage was because he is no longer in the sports arena.

2 The question now is with all the teams and sports getting in on taking a knee during the national anthem will this open the door for Kaepernick to be welcomed back into the NFL?

3 Trump told Fox News that the NFL has to do something about the players taking a knee and that the NFL is afraid of the players. Doing something would create a huge problem if management orders the players to stop taking a knee. That’s not going to happen the players have lots of leverage and with freedom of speech any order like that won’t even get started.

4 Trump claimed in the interview that he talked to a couple of football owners saying something has to be done to stop these players from taking a knee. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft said that he’s behind his team and he’s not the only owner to state so.

5 Playboy founder Hugh Hefner is remembered not only for a magazine for it’s playmates, celebrated articles of politics, music, pop culture, interviews, insightful reviews of entertainment but also it covered a lot on the NFL and wanted to reach out to it’s mostly male audience in it’s prime time era of the 1960s, 70s, an 90s.

SF 49ERS PREVIEW: Offense picking up steam, but will depleted defense follow?

AP File Photo: Arizona Cardinals’ Mike Iupati (76) gets ready to put a block on Josh Mauro, left, during an NFL football training camp Saturday, July 29, 2017, in Glendale, Ariz. (AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin)

SANTA CLARA–There is certainly progress being made. Now it has to show up in the win-loss column.

The 49ers showed tons of heart and determination last Thursday night in a 41-39 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, and although the loss dropped them to 0-3, there were quite a few positives to draw from.

First of all, the offense finally showed some life, particularly embattled quarterback Brian Hoyer, who admittedly had a subpar performance at Seattle the week before and desperately needed a bounce-back effort.

He got that, and had it not been for a highly-questionable pass interference call that stalled a late drive, the 49ers may have very well come away with a sensational comeback win.

The 49ers will need every bit of that offensive resurgence against an Arizona Cardinals team that is seething from a home loss to the Dallas Cowboys in front of a national Monday night audience.

The game will be played Sunday afternoon at University of Phoenix Stadium, and the Cardinals will see this as an opportunity to redeem themselves in front of their home crowd, while the 49ers simply need to get a win any way they can at this point.

The 49ers will need to have a better showing on defense if they are to get their first win of the year, and they will continue to be shorthanded. Linebacker Reuben Foster is progressing, but he is still out of action at this point. He did not practice on Wednesday, and he is not expected to play Sunday.

The same goes for safety Eric Reid, who suffered a knee injury in the first half at Seattle and has not returned to the lineup since. As was the case with Foster, he did not practice on Wednesday and is expected to miss at least a few more weeks.

They will see a number of former teammates on Sunday. Guard Mike Iupati, for instance, is expected to be in the lineup, but a triceps injury caused him to have only a limited participation in practice Wednesday.

Meanwhile, former 49ers guard Alex Boone suffered a pectoral injury and did not practice at all on Wednesday. Furthermore, a report that was released on Wednesday indicated that he is expected to miss up to four weeks because of it.

Earthquakes fall to Fire 4-1

SAN JOSE — Chris Wondolowski broke the scoreless deadlock late in the match, but the Chicago Fire finished with a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium.

The Fire opened the scoring early in the first half as Djordje Mihailovic kicked the ball in for his first career MLS goal at the 14th minute.

Luis Solignac used the power of his head to put the ball into the net and the Fire took a 2-0 lead at the 39th minute.

The Fire built up two goals and carried a 2-0 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The Fire continued to burn in the second half. Nemanja Nikolic scored at the 48th minute to give his team a 3-0 lead.

The Quakes put themselves in the same dark hole like they did in Washington D.C. last Saturday. Nikolic notched his 20th goal of the season at the 65th minute.

The Quakes were on the verge of being handed a second consecutive shutout loss until Wondolowski hit his 12th goal of the season at the 87th minute. Despite the incredible goal, the Fire continued to hold onto a 4-1 lead until the very end of the match.

Notes
Only one Western Conference side has fewer home losses than the Earthquakes’ one (SKC – 0). The Quakes are also in the midst of a seven-game unbeaten run at home.

Wednesday night marked the first showdown between the Quakes and Fire at Avaya Stadium since the venue’s first-ever regular season match in 2015.

The Quakes have gone 3-0-1 in their last four games following a loss.

The Quakes close out the season with three of their last four games at Avaya Stadium. They’re 8-0-2 in their last 10 home matches, including MLS and U.S. Open Cup contests.
