San Francisco 49ers report: 49ers Release CB Brock Following Domestic Violence Arrest

sanfrancisco49ers.com file photo: San Francisco 49ers cornerback Tramaine Brock who was recently released by the 49ers for domestic violence charges

By: Joe Lami

SANTA CLARA, Calif.–On Saturday, the San Francisco 49ers released cornerback Tramaine Brock from their roster. The drop comes a day after Brock was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence. The report had stated that there were visible marks on the victim.

Brock is the first such case of an arrest under the new regime of GM John Lynch, which might suggest the 49ers will be going after a zero tolerance policy, especially when it comes to something as heinous as domestic violence. It was foreshadowed in the introductory presser of Lynch and head coach Kyle Shannahan that a zero tolerance policy would be held for off the field issues.

It looks like Lynch is a man of his word as he tries to renavigate the organization to being respectable once again.

Brock had been one of the longest tenured 49ers on the roster, dating back to 2010. Last season, Brock had 49 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception. On his career, he’s picked the ball off 11 times and has two touchdowns.

Brock was heading into a contract year, as his four-year deal was coming to an end.

The release, of course, will weaken an already poor secondary but shows that there is no room on the team for any criminals and that the 49ers will once again attempt to “win with class”.

Graveman flirts with a “no-no” as A’s beat the Rangers 6-1 in Texas

Pitchers are supposed to need two to three starts before really being ready for the long regular season that is Major League Baseball. Someone forgot to tell that to A’s starter Kendall Graveman.

Graveman won his second game of the young season on Saturday night as the Athletics beat the Texas Rangers in Arlington 6-1. Graveman carried a no-hitter through 6.2-innings. The A’s righty lost his no-hit bid when Mike Napoli hit a sinker over the center field wall for a two-out home run. Graveman finished the inning after giving up a single to Rougned Odor – he induced Jonathon Lucroy to line out for the third out.

Graveman went 7.0-innings giving up one run (earned) on two hits. He struck out five and walked one. Graveman threw 85 pitches (58 strikes).

The Oakland bullpen did its job to perfection on Saturday night as well. Santiago Casilla came in and worked a perfect eighth inning that included one strike out. Ryan Madson took the mound in the ninth in a non-save situation and put nothing but zeros in book except for two strikeouts.

With Sonny Gray still on the sidelines, having Graveman (2-0, 2.08) perform this well in the number one spot in the rotation had to be encouraging to the Athletics coaching staff.

The A’s scored all of their runs in the final four innings of the game. They scored one in the sixth, one in the seventh, three in the eight and an one insurance run in the top of the ninth inning.

Yonder Alonso was the man of the hour for the A’s on Saturday night. He went 2-for-4 at the plate, scored two runs and drove in two runs. He moved up to third base on Mike Napoli’s throwing error in the seventh inning and scored on Rajai Davis’ sacrifice fly. Alonso scored his second run when he hit first home run of the season in the bottom of eighth inning with Jed Lowrie on base.

Jed Lowrie continues to be on fire at the plate for the A’s. He went 3-for-4 including a double on Saturday with one RBI and one run scored. Lowrie’s batting average now stands at an impressive .381.

Rajai Davis had what may have been a breakout game for him by going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Oakland scored their six runs on 10 hits. They left seven runners on base. The A’s were 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Yu Darvish (0-1, 3.65) started his second game of the season and took the loss. Darvish worked 6.0-innings and gave up one run (earned) on four hits. He struck five A’s batters and walked three. Darvish threw 91 pitches (61 strikes).

The Rangers used a total of five pitchers in the game.

Texas left two men on base and went 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position. When you only have two base runners, your RISP numbers look really sad.

The rubber game of the series will be played on Sunday

Texas Manaea
Sean Manaea will take the hill for the A’s on Sunday in Texas

The A’s and Rangers will get underway at 12:05 p.m. on Sunday. Oakland’s LHP Sean Manaea (0-0, 6.00) will go up against the Rangers’ LHP Martin Perez (0-1, 4.50).

Manaea worked 6.0-innings on Tuesday night versus the Angels giving up four runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out four. Manaea wound up with a no-decision in that game that A’s eventually lost.

The Warriors blow out the New Orleans Pelicans, Kevin Durant returns

by Jerry Feitelberg

Oakland- The Golden State Warriors welcomed superstar Kevin Durant back into the lineup Saturday night against the New Orleans Pelicans. Steph Curry did not play, as he had a bone contusion suffered in the game against Phoenix last Wednesday in Phoenix. Shaun Livingston started in Steph’s spot, and the Warriors rolled over the undermanned Pelicans 123-101. The Pelicans’ DeMarcus Cousins was out with a sore Achilles tendon and is done for the season. The Pelicans other offensive star, Anthony Davis, was given the night off by head coach Alvin Gentry.

Durant, who hadn’t played since February 28th, made his presence felt as he scored the first bucket of the game. The Dubs, however, were a bit sluggish in the first quarter. The Pelicans, playing without their two best players, gave the Dubs a tussle and led 14-13 with 3:37 left in the period. Steve Kerr inserted Andre Iguodala and JaVale McGee into the game, and they energized the Dubs into a 10-3 run to finish the quarter with a 23-17 lead. Andre channeled Steph as he hit a three-point shot at the buzzer.

The Pelicans trailed by twelve early in the second quarter but went on a 13-0 run to lead 34-31. The Dubs regained the lead behind the play of KD, Ian Clark, Shaun Livington, Draymond Green and finished the period on a 12-4 run to lead 54-46 at the half. Klay Thompson led the Dubs with 10, KD had 6, Draymond 8, and Andre Iguodala 8. Alexis Ajinca paced the Pelicans with 13, and Quinn Cook tallied 11 coming off the bench.

The Dubs blew the game wide open in the third quarter. They outscored the Pelicans 39-22, and they looked like the Warriors. They moved the ball and found the open man. Durant, who looked a bit rusty earlier in the game, found his rhythm and looked like the KD of old. He finished the night with a double-double. He did not, however, make a 3-pointer. Klay Thompson, just as Andre had done in the first period, hit a three-pointer to end the third period. The Warriors led 93-68 and were on their way to their 14th straight victory.

The Warrior offense didn’t slow done in the fourth quarter either.  Iguodala scored the first 3 buckets of the period. Ian Clark, Kevin Durant, Shaun Livingston, and JaVale McGee all played well.  The Warriors win 123-101.

Game Notes and Stats- The one sour note in the game is that reserve forward Matt Barnes suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter. Barnes hobbled down to the locker room, and X-Rays were negative. There was no information available about his condition at this time.

The Warriors had 7 players in double figures. Klay led the team with 20 points, KD had a double-double as he tallied 16 points, 6 assists, and 10 rebounds. Draymond had 13, Shaun,14, Andre 15, McGee 16, and Ian Clark 17. The Dubs shot 51% from the floor and made 10 3-point shots. The Pelicans Quinn Cook scored 22, Jordan Crawford, also off the bench, knocked 21, Alexis Ajinca 17, and Jrue Holiday had a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.

The Warriors outrebounded New Orleans 53-34. The Dubs had 36 assists and recorded 2 steals and 3 blocks.

The Warriors improve to 66-14 while the Pelicans fall to 33-47.

Before the game, Kevin Durant was asked how he felt about returning to action after missing 20 games. Durant said this “I felt normal. I’ve been waiting for that feeling for a couple of weeks now.” It took a while, but he did look like his old self in the second half. Welcome back, KD.

The Warriors resume play Monday night against the Utah Jazz. Steph Curry will be in the lineup. The Warriors will likely face the Portland Trailblazers in the first round of the playoffs. The Blazers magic number is one. Any combination of Blazer wins, or Denver losses will put the Blazers in the 8th seed. The Blazers own the tiebreaker.

San Jose Finishes 2016-17 Season On A Winning Note in 3-1 win over the Flames

San Jose Finishes 2016-17 Season On A Winning Note

By Barbara Mason

SAN JOSE–Well we’ve made through another regular season, riding the highs and lows that those 82 games brought. It was a thrill a minute at times and downright disheartening at others but the bottom line is that the San Jose Sharks are heading into another post-season. Less than a month ago the Sharks could do no wrong leading their Pacific division by as many as 9 points and showing no signs of slowing down. Were the signs there? Was there something that was missed because when it all seemed to be going so beautifully, the team came to a crashing roadblock with less than stellar defense, an offensive letdown and a power play that went down the drain along with the power kill. The shoe-in Sharks dropped into 3rd place in the division bidding adieu to home ice advantage. They have been having a terrible time with Anaheim, Edmonton and the Flames of late; not a good thing.

Saturday night’s game against the Flames could prove to be a real ho hum affair. A win or loss will not affect the final pairings–it’s just nice to win and there could be some momentum to build off of. More than likely Coach DeBoer will sit some of his players avoiding any possible injury heading into he playoffs and the Flames will likely do exactly the same.

The one Superstar that did take the ice was probable defensive player of the year Brent Burns. The near capacity crowd were the happy recipients of a Brent Burns bobble head along with more prizes than you could shake a stick on this fan appreciation night. Despite missing the likes of Thornton, Couture, Pavelski, Ward, Braun, Hertl and Jones, fans had a great time at this final regular game of the 2016-17 season. The lucky winners of the player jerseys will no doubt never forget meeting and greeting the players after the game as they were presented with their prizes.

There would be no goals in the first period and San Jose was able to kill three penalties having a nice defensive game. Shots on goal were few and far between; San Jose with 5 and the Flames with 6. Shark goalie Aaron Dell had some great saves.

At 4:38 in the second period the Sharks would light up the night with a goal off the stick of Chris Tierney for a 1-0 lead and his 11th goal of the season. He was assisted by Jannik Hansen. At 9:15 San Jose would go on the power play, their first of the game. Although they were unable to cash in on the power play, San Jose would take a 2-0 lead when Mikkel Boedker scored his 10th goal of the season at 18:07. He was assisted by Barclay Goodrow and Chris Tierney. The Sharks came very close to taking that 2-0 lead into the locker room at the break. With 6 seconds left on the clock the Flames would score to pull within one goal. Curtis Lazar scored his first goal of the season. Shots on goal had picked up; San Jose with 17 and Calgary with 15. Again both goalies were having a nice game with some incredible saves.

The third period opened with some tremendous saves by San Jose goalie Aaron Dell. The Sharks are indeed fortunate to have two goalies of such a high caliber. The score would remain 2-1 until mid-way through the period at 11:25 when Daniel O’Regan would celebrate his first NHL goal, a power play goal. The final was 3-1.

The Sharks will now have to wait for the outcome of the Anaheim/Los Angeles to be played Sunday to learn who they will play first round in the post season. San Jose finishes the 2016-17 season with a better record than they did last year. It looks to be another exciting post-season as San Jose awaits their first round opponent next week.

San Francisco Giants Saturday game wrap: Padres take another one from Giants 2-1; Pads rookie pitcher Chacin hands S.F. fourth straight loss

This rut that the San Francisco Giants are currently in is not getting better, as they were held in check by a journeyman pitcher and a hot rookie.

Rookie Manuel Margot doubled twice off of Madison Bumgarner just one day after hitting two home runs and the San Diego Padres defeated the Giants 2-1 at Petco Park.

This was the fourth straight loss for the Giants, as veteran pitcher Jhoulys Chacin and two relievers allowed just five hits to the Giants on Saturday afternoon.

Chacin, who was on the losing end of a 14-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Opening Day in Los Angeles rebounded to pick-up his first win of the season, as he struck out five and walked just one.

The right-hander gave up a double to Brandon Belt in the first inning, then did not allow another hit to the Giants until Joe Panik singled that went off the glove of Wil Myers in the top of the fifth inning and his last hit by Eduardo Nunez that went off the glove of Hunter Renfroe in the top of the seventh inning was ruled a double. That double by Nunez ended Chacin’s night, and Padres manager Andy Green turned the game over to his bullpen and Brad Hand.

Ryan Buchter closed the game for the second straight day, despite giving up a two-out single to Buster Posey and a RBI single to Brandon Crawford to get the Giants within one run; however, he was able to get Nunez to fly out to end the game.

It was a tough loss for Bumgarner, who pitched a complete game giving up just two runs on six hits, walking two and striking out five.

Despite the loss, it was the 15th complete game of Bumgarner’s career and the sixth time that he was on the losing end. During the 2016 season, Bumgarner completed four completed four games and was on the losing end of two of those games.

Allen Cordoba picked up his first major league hit in the bottom of the second inning, as he singled and then scored on a Margot double.

San Jose Earthquakes Saturday game wrap: Wondo’s 90th minute goal saves the day for Quakes in 1-1 draw with Seattle

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Earthquakes settled for a 1-1 draw with the Seattle Sounders FC at Avaya Stadium Saturday.

Following a 2-1 loss to NYCFC at Yankee Stadium, the Earthquakes returned to San Jose to host the Sounders in a Saturday night game. Thus, home-field advantage was a positive thing. Also, in honor of Hall of Fame night, 5,000 fans received a free Joe Cannon t-shirt.

The Earthquakes had a couple of chances in the first half. Their first chance came at the 14th minute when Nick Lima set up Anibal Godoy, whose scoring attempt was cleared by Stefan Frei. Two minutes later, Simon Dawkins got a shot off at the edge of six-yard box, but his attempt trickled just past the far post.

“As far as the performance,” Lima recalled. “It was hard. The second half, we weren’t on top of our game, but it was a game where you’d expect toughness from both teams…There were a few moments, like when we went down and gave up a goal. It hurts and it’s hard to deal with, but we fought back and got a goal in return…I almost thought we had a chance to win it, but you know, it’s gotta be a full 90 minutes. It was their game, but we gotta move on and focus on Friday’s game.”

Godoy received a yellow card at the 33rd minute. He also made a promising kick from the left field, but was called offside at the 38th minute.

Krazy George rallied up the crowd at the 41st minute. The Earthquakes had another chance when Marco Urena kicked the ball into the net, but it was denied by Frei.

The match was scoreless after the first half. San Jose held a halftime ceremony to induct Cannon to the Hall of Fame. Cannon’s former teammates also took the time out to congratulate him on his induction.

Once again, the Earthquakes had some chances in the second half. Urena’s kick at the 51st minute had potential, but it was just a bit too high.

The Earthquakes made their first substitution of the match at the 66th minute. Cordell Cato made his first appearance of the season, replacing Dawkins.

Godoy executed a kick from outside of the box at the 71st minute, but it went just wide of the net.

The Earthquakes made another substitution at the 80th minute. Shea Salinas replaced Jahmir Hyka. Then, Fatai Alashe received a yellow card at the 83rd minute.

“There’s a lot of emotion that goes through your head,” Alashe said.

Sounders FC broke the scoreless deadlock in the 84th minute as Nicolas Lodeiro finished a play for a 1-0 lead.

However, the Seattle lead was short-lived. The Earthquakes tied the match 1-1 at the 90th minute after Chris Wondolowski scored his second goal of the season.

“It’s still a bit frustrating that we slipped and gave up two points,” Wondolowski said when asked about the final result. “But it’s nice to have that character and fight and come back and you don’t want to take that for granted.”

Three minutes of stoppage time were added to the clock after two, 45-minute halves. The Earthquakes (2-1-2) wanted to score the go-ahead goal to earn a 2-1 win, but they settled for one point after coming back for a late 1-1 draw with Sounders FC (1-3-1).

“We had a great game regardless,” Shaun Francis said. “We’ll do our best to learn from it and prepare for next Friday’s game.”

“There’s a lot of guys who had good performances tonight,” Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “I felt like both teams had it in them.”

MLB Podcast The Show with Matt Harrington: It’s just phenomenal what’s happened to the snake bit Giants; A’s Hahn could work his way into the rotation

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Jesse Hahn delivers to the Texas Rangers during the sixth inning of a baseball game, Friday, April 7, 2017, in Arlington, Texas. (AP Photo/Jim Cowsert)

On the MLB Podcast with Matt:

The San Francisco Giants bullpen is just terrifying right now. The starting pitching has pitched well enough to end games but the bullpen comes in and coughs up the lead and the by product of the Will Smith injury and guys being spotted into roles their not used to. There was closer Mark Melancon blowing a save on opening day in Arizona and that put everyone into a little panic. I’m looking at it as a glass half full prospective their scoring runs you’d expect the pitching to be there when the Giants go out there. Dave Righetti is one of the best pitching coaches in the game and manager Bruce Bochy is one of the best managers for starting pitchers. We’ll see if they can sort this out with the home opener on Monday.

The Oakland A’s relieverJesse Hahn impressed in his relief appearance came in to relieve for starter Raul Alcantara on Friday night and Hahn delivered with six innings, seven hits, two earned runs and three strike outs. This essentially was what you call a reverse relief start and Hahn came in with the game already underhand and went in and pitched six innings and was like the full starter. Six innings with two runs is a great start for any A’s pitcher right now other than Kendall Graveman who the A’s have great expectations from.

Sacramento Kings Friday game wrap: Kings make valiant effort but can’t hang on in 98-94 loss to Lakers

By Jessica Kwong

LOS ANGELES – The Sacramento Kings allowed the Los Angeles Lakers, two spots behind them in rankings and second to last in the western conference, to come up from behind and win Friday night’s game at Staples Center.

After Darren Collison’s triple with 14 seconds remaining, the Kings finished the quarter up 31-18, but that dwindled, and the close game got out of reach for Sacramento in the last minute.

Kings head coach Dave Joerger said what the team talked about postgame was “the consolation prize.”

“That we put ourselves in another game-ending situation, some things that you can learn,” Joerger said.

The Kings quickly blew a 13-point lead from the first quarter. A minute-and-a-half into the second quarter, Jordan Clarkson made a three-pointer to cut the lead to 31-25, forcing the Kings to call a timeout. The Lakers tied the game at 37 points when Julius Randle made two free throws with just under four minutes to go in the quarter.

Los Angeles lead by as many as four points before Collison passed the ball to Skal Labissiere who made a cutting dunk to put the Kings back up 45-44.

The third quarter was head-to-head, with neither team leading by more than five points and four lead changes. Sacramento managed to take the lead after George Papagiannis made an eight-foot turnaround hook shot. Then Collison made a running layup to put the Kings up 70-67, but Brandon Ingram made two free throws to put the Lakers within one point at the end of the quarter.

Sacramento again led by as many as five points in the fourth quarter, but the Lakers tied the game four times and sealed the win in the final minute.

D’Angelo Russell made a driving finger roll lay-up with 41 seconds remaining to give the Lakers up 93-92. Buddy Hield made a bad pass and Corey Brewer stole the ball, the Kings’ 23rd turnover. Langston Galloway fouled Brewer, who made both at the free throw line.

“Guys are trying to make plays. Most of them are not forced turnovers with us. Some of them are just losing the ball or a loose ball rolling off the foot or unforced turnovers,” Hield said. “We have to fix that and I think we’ll be fine.”

Hield made a driving lay-up with a second left in the game to 96-94, but fouled Russell, who made both at the line and give the Lakers a win by four points.

“They threw us around in the paint and got 16 offensive rebounds,” Joerger said. “Is it good for us to learn some of that stuff? Yes, because hopefully down the line that play that we have to draw up at the end is for us to get into the playoffs or the difference between getting fifth seed and seventh seed.”

The regular season for the past few weeks for the Kings has been about giving young players more time on the court and getting ready for a better season next year.

“That’s all this time is right now is gaining experience. Trying to compare through things like that. That’s big for our young guys and us making a step forward to making the playoffs for next year,” Cauley-Stein said. “You have to be able to execute those plays down the stretch. That’s part of learning it.”

The Kings return to the Golden 1 Center on Sunday to face the Houston Rockets. Tipoff is at 3 p.m.
