#1 Cal got their first taste of action on Wednesday against Chico State in exhibition play. In watching that pre season game can you get a sense, an idea that some of the players are ready for tonight’s opener?

#2 You have to go back to 2019-20 Cal head coach Mark Fox’s first season was the last time the Bears faced the UC Davis Aggies for a 72-66 on Nov 26, 2019 and here is coach Fox again ready to face the Aggies on opening night.

#3 Cal took a look at some 11 players Wednesday night and rotating 11 players the way coach Fox did gives him that advantage to see what some of these players can do but one game doesn’t really tell the whole story. Is it something that Fox has to conclude with a one game snap shot or through practices as well he can get an idea where he’s going?

#4 Since 1917-18 season the Cal Bears have had meetings with the UC Davis basketball team 33 in all and Cal has won everyone of those games since that time. Of that time Cal had 19 coaches since. In the 21st century Cal has seen the Aggies only three times here in the 21st century.

#5 Morris, it’s opening night it’s a special night for alumni, students, players, coaches, and front office people after the pre game festivities the Cal basketball program is a program that everyone on the Cal Berkeley campus are hoping that can turn around from last year’s season.

#1 The Stanford Cardinal women’s (3-0)  game for Friday night vs. UC Davis (1-0) has been canceled due to coronavirus protocols. Santa Clara County does not allow sports of any kind to be played there until early January.

#2 Stanford women’s head coach Tara VanDerveer’s who is one game away from tying the late former Tennessee Vol’s head coach Pat Summitt’s record for wins could have come Friday. As a result Stanford will play at Cal on Sunday and VanDerveer with a win over Cal could tie Summitt’s record.

#3 The Stanford Cardinal (2-2) in football win over the Washington Huskies (3-1) last Sat Dec 5th was huge it evened the Cardinal win loss record at 2-2  and it was the Cardinal’s second straight win 31-26.

#4 Stanford quarterback Davis Mills threw for 252 yards and one touchdown, running back Austin Jones carried twice for two touchdowns and running back Nathaniel Peat ran for one touchdown in the Stanford victory.

#5 Jerry, the Cardinal close out the season against Oregon State (2-3), the last time these two teams met it was last season as it will be the two clubs first meeting of 2020. The Beavers in their last game lost to the Utah Utes (1-2) in a close game 30-24 and the Beavers upset the Oregon Ducks (3-2) on Nov 27th 41-38 could you see this one being as close as the Big Game was when they edged out Cal by just one point?

#1 For the Cal Bears, getting a victory on opening day last Saturday was an important way to start the 2019 season with a win over UC Davis at Memorial Stadium and what a way to start with running back Christopher Brown Jr. rushing for 197 yards to help lead the team to a 27-13 win.

#2 The Stanford Cardinal defeated Northwestern, but the Cardinal lost their starting quarterback during the game when KJ Costello took a forearm to the head. The Cardinal hung onto win it 17-7. Costello could muster only one strong drive before the injury. The Cardinal are on the road next week to face the USC Trojans next Saturday.

#3 The San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo took Thursday Night Football off last week and the 49ers went with three quarterbacks: Nick Mullins, CJ Beathard, and Nick Speight. Speight and Beathard both saw the most time in the game with Mullens resting. Is that an indication that Nick Mullens, who saw limited time will be the backup, and head coach Kyle Shanahan wants to see if Beathard or Speight will fill the third-string spot?

#4 The Oakland Raiders look as if they had a very solid preseason winning three of their four games. Raider head coach Jon Gruden said he’s happy with the progress of backup quarterbacks Nathan Peterman (out with elbow injury) and Mike Glennon who he’ll really depend on if starting quarterback Derek Carr ever needs a rest.

#5 The Oakland A’s are hosting the LA Angels and Detroit Tigers this week at the Oakland Coliseum. The A’s are 1/2 game back in the AL wild card behind second place Cleveland. It could go right down to the wire for a chance of a wild card birth.

#1 Former Golden State Warrior and now Los Angeles Laker DeMarcus Cousins threaten to put a bullet in the head of his ex-girlfriend Christy West. West filed a restraining order against Cousins. Cousins wanted their seven-year-old son to attend the wedding of his and his girlfriend, but West said she wouldn’t have it, which touched off the argument. Cousins is out for the season with a torn ACL.

#2 The Cal Bears’ Justin Wilcox preparing his team for this Saturday’s game against UC Davis. Wilcox led Cal to a 7-6, 4-5 record last season. They got in the Cheez-It Bowl last season, but are looking for a bigger bowl this season.

#3 Kansas City Royals owner David Glass is close to selling the Royals for $900 million. The deal for $1 billion would go to John Sherman, a Kansas City businessman. Under Glass, the Royals won the 2015 World Series against the New York Mets.

#4 The San Jose Earthquakes picked up a key win after going winless in four of five games they got the victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Quakes’ Judson, Chris Wondolowski, and Andres Rios all scored for San Jose for the 3-1 win.

#5 London has Orlando City at San Jose this Saturday night at Avaya Stadium. The Quakes are looking for their second straight win. Does playing at home give them that chance?

Stanford squeezes past Long Beach State 93-86

PALO ALTO — Coming off a loss to an outstanding San Francisco Dons team on the road, Stanford (now 7-5 on the season) returned to Maples Pavilion for their final game of the 2018 calendar year and their final game of the non-conference schedule against Long Beach State (now 5-10 on the season). Star freshman guard Cormac Ryan remained out for the third consecutive game with an ankle injury, giving freshman Jaiden Delaire his first career start in the win. Stanford was successful in avenging last year’s road loss to the Long Beach State 49ers by the score of 93-86.

The game remained tight throughout the first half as copious turnover and fouls committed by both teams stunted any runs. The Cardinal and The Beach exchanged small advantages with Josh Sharma and KZ Okpala leading the team with 9 and 8 points in the half, respectively. Sharma also collected 10 rebounds in the first half, setting a career record. Stanford would take a 37-36 lead to halftime.

Long Beach State’s lead with the score 45-43 was their last of the night as Stanford caught fire and, on the back of a pair of Oscar da Silva 3-pointers, went on a 13-1 run, which put the score at 56-46 with less than 14 minutes left in the game.

The Beach didn’t go quietly, however. Stanford’s free throw shooting down the stretch allowed for the 49ers to crawl back to within two points with under a minute to go. Bryan Alberts, who finished with 22 points (6-13 from beyond the arc), nailed a pair of 3s while Temidayo Yussuf, who finished with 13 points (5-7 from the field), added 6 points of his own in the closing minutes to narrow the gap. Towards the end of the game, Stanford shot 5-19 from the charity stripe.

Down by 3 and with a chance to tie the game with under 10 seconds left in the game, Long Beach State head coach Don Monson tried to call a timeout to presumably set up a play for his team on offense but was unsuccessful at getting the referees’ attention. Subsequently, Long Beach State threw up a poor, air-balled shot on their final possession. Monson was understandably irate with the referees which drew a pair of technical fouls and an ejection from the court. Stanford padded their lead in the closing seconds with the fouls shots.

Josh Sharma finished the game for the Cardinal with his first career double-double. He set career-highs in both points and rebounds, blowing his previous career highs out of the water. He finished with 23 points and 18 rebounds.

Daejon Davis, who had 17 points and 5 assists for the Cardinal, left the game with an apparent ankle injury with about seven minutes left in the game. Head coach Jerod Hasse said he does not know the extent of the injury.

KZ Okpala and Jaiden Delaire each had 20 points and 10 points, respectively, in the win.

What’s next?
Stanford will open Pac-12 Conference play with the LA schools as the Card head south for games at UCLA on January 3rd and at USC on January 6th.

Long Beach State opens Big West Conference play at home against UC Davis after they face Bethesda at home on January 5th.

Three takeaways from SJSU’s home opener vs. UC Davis

SAN JOSE, Calif. — In case you missed it, the San Jose State Spartans welcomed the UC Davis Aggies to its home turf inside CEFCU Stadium on Thursday night.

As you should already know, SJSU went 2-11 (1-7) last year under first-year head coach Brent Brennan, who’s now in his second year as the Spartans’ head coach. And, of course, there are a lot of folks–mostly non-Spartan fans–who doubt that the 2018 Spartans will be an improved team, but that’s fine. It’s still too early to throw in the towel.

Here are three takeaways from SJSU’s home opener vs. UC Davis.

3. Tyler Nevens is in our thoughts and prayers 
The Spartans’ 2018 season is off to a rough start. Tyler Nevens, who’s arguably the Spartans’ top wide running back, suffered a serious injury following a head-to-head collision. Nevens was on the field for nearly 20 minutes before being taken off the field on a stretcher for an evaluation at a local hospital. Nevens was released late Thursday night and has been resting since then.

Many people sent their thoughts and prayers to Nevens, who scored two touchdowns prior to his injury, and it appears to be working wonders on the Spartan star. While it’s unclear if Nevens will be cleared to play in next Saturday’s game at Washington State, Spartans’ head coach Brent Brennan said that Nevens’ replacement at running back would be DeJon Packer, Jamar Williams or Brenden Manigo.

2. Montel Aaron is more confident this year
Spartans’ quarterback Montel Aaron, who’s now a sophomore, told the local media that he felt more confident this year compared to last year.

The only issue is that Aaron hasn’t had much experience last year, so he has a lot of things to learn and a lot of strides to make, but it’s a process, so he’d say that it’s all about mental techniques, so he has to have the required confidence regardless of who’s starting the game or what they’ve done in the offseason, as you’ll have to go after what you want to achieve.

1. Where’s the Spartan defense?
If you listened to the radio broadcast and/or followed live updates on Twitter, you’d notice that the Spartan defense was pretty much non-existent during the SJSU vs. UC Davis home opener at CEFCU Stadium. The Spartan offense, however, was a force that just happened to be reckoned with.

The Aggies are far from a good college football team in the Big Sky Conference, but they were able to hold off the Spartans, who are in the Mountain West Conference, for a 44-38 win in San Jose, Calif. Ulonzo Gilliam became the ninth Aggie to score three touchdowns in a single game in UC Davis’ Big Sky history, and the second to do so against an FBS opponent.

That being said, the Spartan defense has to show up sooner than later if the Spartans want to win games this season. The Spartans’ defensive lineup of Bryson Bridges, Owen “Boogie” Roberts, Sailosi Latu, Jesse Osuna, Tysyn Parker, Ethan Aguayo, Jamal Scott, John Touissaint, Tre Webb, Jay Lenard and Dakari Monroe looks pretty darn good on paper, but in the game versus UC Davis, SJSU’s defense allowed an FCS quarterback to pass for 446 yards and three touchdowns and an FCS running back to rush for 132 yards and two touchdowns. The Spartan defense clearly got destroyed by the Aggies in 2018’s first-ever FCS over FBS upset, which was extremely disappointing.

Hawkins to be named head football coach at UC Davis

Thomas Wolfe may have been wrong when he said, “You can’t go home again.” Dan Hawkins is coming home to UC Davis to become the 17th head football coach in the history of the program.

Hawkins will be officially introduced at a press conference on Tuesday at 10 a.m. by UC Davis Director of Athletics Kevin Blue.

“We are very excited to welcome Dan Hawkins back to UC Davis to lead an exciting new era of football at his alma mater,” Blue said. “Dan is a highly experienced head football coach who possesses in-depth expertise about what it takes to be successful in the modern era of Div. I college football.”

Hawkins played fullback for UC Davis under head coach Jim Sochor in 1981-82. Hawkins stayed on with the Aggies football program as an assistant coach from 1983-85.

Hawkins is best known for his time as head coach at Boise State (2001-05). He took a little known program to national prominence in the Western Athletic Conference. The Broncos compiled a 53-11 record and played in four bowl games under Hawkins leadership.

Hawkins left Boise State in 2006 to take the head coaching position at Colorado where stayed until 2010. After leaving Colorado, he worked for ESPN and in the Canadian Football League.

Hawkins started his head coaching career in Sacramento at Christian Brothers High School. He was also head coach of NAIA Willamette in Oregon.

UC Davis plays in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Series as member of the Big Sky Conference.

UC Davis completes its Alaska adventure

The Aggies lost their final game of the GCI Great Alaska Shootout to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies of Michigan 79-66 on Saturday. The loss dropped the Aggies into sixth place in the tournament with a 1-2 record.

“I told the team that I was pleased overall with their effort, and I’m encouraged, not discouraged, by this tournament and where they are thus far.” said UC Davis head coach Jim Les , “This team has a huge ceiling, I love everyone’s competitive nature.”

Oakland’s 3-point shooting did the Aggies in

The Golden Grizzlies shot 41.7-percent (10-for-24) from 3-point range. They hit seven of those 3-pointers in the first half. The Aggies hit 4-of-10 from beyond the 3-point line. Both teams hit 25 two-point field goals.

Oakland also outscored UC Davis at the free throw line. The Golden Grizzlies scored 19 points from the charity stripe while the Aggies added just 12 points from the free throw line.

Oakland had four players in double figures; UC Davis had three in double digits

  • Chima Moneke of UC Davis led all scorer with 21 points
  • Mikey Henn had 11 points for the Aggies coming off the bench
  • Siler Schneider added 10 points bench points for UC Davis
  • Stevie Clark was the leading scorer for the Golden Grizzlies with 19 points
  • Martez Walker scored 16 points with four field goals, four 3-pointers and 4 free throws
  • Nick Daniels supplied Oakland with 12 points
  • Isaiah Brock added 10 points to the Golden Grizzlies total

“That is a good basketball team (Oakland) that is going to win 20 to 25 games, win their league (Horizon) and earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. I told my team that we went toe-to-toe with them; we have some things that we need to clean up, but I like where this team is as long as we stay healthy and continue to work,” said UC Davis head coach Jim Les.

What’s next for UC Davis 

The Aggies will return to action on Saturday, December 3rd when they will travel to Moscow, Idaho to play the 3-2 Idaho Vandals.

Sacramento State loses EWU Tourney opener to USF

The Sacramento State Hornets lost their opening game in the Eastern Washington University Tournament to the University of San Francisco Dons 77-59 on Saturday. The win lifted the Dons to 4-0 on the season while the Hornets drop to 1-4.

The Dons had four players score in double figures

  • Chase Foster scored a career high 18 points in 23 of playing time to lead the USF scoring attack
  • Marquill Smith put up 12 points in eight minutes and was a perfect 2-for-2 from 3-point land and 6-for-6 from the free throw line
  • Nate Renfro and Jordan Ratinho added 10 points each
  • The Dons shot 54.7-percent from the floor and 50-percent (11-for-22) from long distance
  • USF led this game wire-to-wire

Nick Hornsby led the Hornets attack

  • Forward Nick Hornsby put up 20 points and grabbed 9 points in 34 minutes of playing time
  • Justin Strings was the other Hornet who scored in double figures recording 18 points
  • Sacramento State struggled shooting in the first half going 10-for-30 (33.3-percent) from the field
  • It was the Hornets 3-point shooting – 7-of-17 (41.2-percent) – that kept them close in the half
  • The Hornets shot 42.8-percent in the second half but that was not enough of an improvement to catch the Dons
  • Sac State also hurt themselves at the free throw line by going just 8-for-15 (53.3-percent) from the stripe

The Hornets have no time to rest as they are back in action on Sunday

The Hornets will face the University of Denver Pioneers (1-3) on Sunday at 12:05 PM PST. The Pioneers lost to Eastern Washington on Saturday night 85-80 in overtime.

UC Davis stumbles in the first game of Great Alaska Shootout losing to Weber State 86-55

The UC Davis Men’s Basketball team played the defending Big Sky Champion Weber State Wildcats in the first-round of the GCI Great Alaska Shootout on Thanksgiving night. The Wildcats lived up to their reputation of being a very good basketball team coming away with a 86-55 win over the Aggies (4-2).

Weber State put on a scoring barrage in the second half putting up 47 points to 26 points for UC Davis. The Wildcats shot 64.0-percent (16-for-25) from the field in the closing half and hit on 7-of- 13 opportunities beyond the 3-point line. The Aggies shot 34.8-percent in the second half and went 3-for-7 from long range.

UC Davis held a 20-9 lead in the first half, but Weber State hit 6-of-12 shots from behind the 3-point arc to make a comeback in the half. As the teams went to halftime Weber State held a 39-32 over the Aggies.

Joe Mooney was the Aggies leading scorer with 12 points. He was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor including two 3-pointers.

“We have a lot of confidence in Joe, he is a good player. He will continue to earn minutes; you can tell that he is becoming more comfortable as the season progresses,” said head coach Jim Les.

Siler Schneider added 11 points, Chima Moneke had eight points and eight rebounds while Mikey Henn scored seven points for the Aggies.

Dusty Baker led the Wildcats scoring with 21 points in 22 minutes on the floor. Jeremy Senglin produced 20 points and was 4-for-8 from long range. Weber State (2-2) as a team shot 52.0-percent (13-for-25) from downtown.

No rest for the weary

UC Davis faces a quick turnaround as they will face Drake (1-3) in a 3:00 PST tipoff on Friday. Drake – a member of the Missouri Valley Conference – lost their first game of the tournament to Iona 64-53.

The Aggies will have one more game in the consolation bracket on Saturday at either 1:00 or 3:00 PM depending on the results of the Drake game.

This could be the last Great Alaskan Shootout

This the 39th and possibly the last Great Alaskan Shootout. The tournament has been financially challenged and now the Alaska State Legislature is threatening to reduce the funding it gives the event.

There are so many tournaments in warm weather locations that are more attractive to teams and their fans. There are also the several Las Vegas opportunities. Frankly, the winter conditions in Alaska with temperatures in twenties, snow and six-hours of daylight is not a big draw for fans who like to travel with their team.

Unless the tournament is able to find a larger corporate sponsor or a higher-paying television contract, the Great Alaskan Shootout may be history.

Stanford Routs UC Davis

The Stanford Cardinal opened their 2014 football season going against the UC Davis Aggies. The Cardinal kicked off to the Aggies, The Aggies could do nothing as the Cardinal totally dominated the game and blew out the Aggie 45-0. The Cardinal dominated all facets of the game. Offense was clicking, defense was fantastic and special teams came up big time for Stanford. The Aggies never entered Stanford territory.

Stanford took an early7-0 lead in the first quarter. The Cardinal kicked off to the Aggies from UC Davis. The Stanford defense asserted themselves and forced the Aggies to kick after a three and out. The Aggies punted to Ty Montgomery who took the ball on his own forty yard line and took it to the house for the score, Williamson kicked the extra point. The score came with just 2:53 played. Stanford continued its dominance on defense forcing the Aggies to punt again. Stanford went on 12 play 67 yard drive to make it a 14-0 game. Kevin Hogan made key completions to Ty Montgomery and Francis Owusu. Hogan scored the TD from the one yard line and the extra point was good. 14-0 Cardinal at the end of one quarter of play.

Stanford kept the pressure on pinning the Aggies down deep in their own territory. The Aggies punted

but it ended up on their own 40 yard line. On the very first play from scrimmage, Kevin Hogan found wide receiver Michael Rector on about the five yard line and Rector took it in for the score. Kick was good and the Cardinal now has a 21-0 lead with 9:10 left in the half.

The Cardinal again kept the Aggies deep in their own end again forcing them to punt. The Cardinal got the ball on their own 46 yard yard. Hogan connected with Christian McCaffrey who was wide open and McCaffrey ran it nto the end zone for the touchdown. The Cardinal now has a commanding 28-0 lead.

Ty Montgomery scored his second touchdown of the game with 1:19 left in the half. It was a 44 yard

pass play for the score and it was a 77 yard drive. The Aggies took the ensuing kickoff to the 23rd yard line but they fumbled the ball and Stanford recovered on the 36. The Cardinal ran the ball down to the 15 yard line. Jordan Williamson kicked a 32 yard field goal to end the half with Stanford holding a 38-0

lead against the game but overmatched UC Davis Aggie team.

Stats for the first half. Stanford had 274 yards total offense. Hogan threw for 204 yards and had one interception. UCD quarterback London Lacy had a miserable first half . He went six for eleven good for 23 yards and just 58 yards total offense for the Aggies.

Kevin Hogan started the second half but he was replaced by Evan Crower with 11:51 left in the third period. Crower drove the Cardinal to the 20 yard line but the drive stalled. Willimson attempted a 37 yard field goal but the kick was no good. There was no scoring in the third quarter. The big plays of the quarter came when Noor Davis intercepted a London Lacy pass on the Aggie 17 yard line but the Cardinal fumbled on the next play and the aggies recovered on the two yard line. The Cardinal held the ball for 9:19 minutes in the period. Just 15 minutes left in the game and we can all go home.

In the fourth quarter, the big play so far was a 41 yard punt return by Christian McCaffrey.

McCaffrey initially fumbled but recovered to race down to the Aggie 13 yrd yard line. On the very first play of the drive, Evan Crower hit tight end Austin Hooper for the touchdown . The extra point is good and the Cardinal now lead 45-0 with 8:22 left in the game. Stanford has inserted second and third string players on defense at this point in the game. Ryans Burns is in at quarterback relacing Evan Crower.

On his first play, Burns ran 20 yards for a first down but could no more and the Cardinal had to punt.

Final score Stanford wins 45-0.

After the game, Ty Montgomery answered a question this way. We saw you line up in a lot of different positions, field punts for the first time. How much fun is it to get all over the field and show off your versatility a little bit?

TY MONTGOMERY:It’s fun to be out there, be able to play.I enjoy stepping on the field no matter what position I’m in, just playing with these guys on the team.

Q.Is it different or what would you say was the difference between returning punts and returning kickoffs?

TY MONTGOMERY: The only difference in my mind is you don’t have the ability to fair catch a kickoff return. But it’s the same thing, ten guys block, find the seam and hit it.
