San Francisco Giants podcast with Marko Ukalovic: Have Giants run out of patience after most recent Strickland meltdown?

thenational.com file photo: Fist Bump — San Francisco pitcher Hunter Strickland (60) tangles with the Washington Nationals Bryce Harper (34) during last season’s bench emptying brawl at AT&T Park

On the SF Giants podcast with Marko:

San Francisco Giants pitcher Hunter Strickland has had his fair share issues dealing with emotions going back to the 2014 World Series, where he got into a shouting match with the Royals’ Salvador Perez, which emptied the benches. In 2017, he beaned Washington Nationals’ star Bryce Harper, which sent Harper swinging at Strickland and emptying the benches, and a game he coughed up a right field single to allow the game-winning run to score in the top of the ninth. On Monday night against the Marlins going back to the clubhouse, he punched a door breaking his hand and forcing him to be out of action for six to eight weeks.

Strickland has had problems controlling his emotions. This is something manager Bruce Bochy admitted to during Monday’s press conference following the Giants’ loss. We asked Marko is that more a detriment or will the Giants look the other way and keep the relief pitcher? Strickland did save 13 of his last 17 games but has two consecutive blown saves in his last two games.

Today’s starters for the Miami Marlins: Jose Urena (2-8) goes up against the Giants’ Derek Holland (4-7) at a 12:45 pm start at AT&T Park.

On the podcast with Amaury:

What has it meant for the economy in Russia to have this year’s World Cup and how will it impact the Mexican, U.S., and Canadian economy for 2026. FIFA gains more interest than any other sport when the event comes up once every four years. Even non-soccer fans turn to it.

A’s open two game series in San Diego: The San Diego Padres the A’s next opponent have a similar business model to the Oakland A’s. Padres general manager AJ Preller no longer employs expensive free agents. The Padres use their farm system more, use younger players and use a few veterans.

The A’s are at .500 the 13th time this season. The A’s also will be missing Matt Chapman and Matt Joyce both on the ten day D.L. The A’s will start Paul Blackburn tonight. In his last start Blackburn got lit up by the Houston Astros at the Oakland Coliseum going 1 1/3 innings and giving up eight runs.

It’s early, but with some of the injuries that San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey has been enduring over the last few years and currently riding the bench with hip and back issues, the Giants’ most recent signing of college phenom catcher Joey Bart gives them some confidence about their future at the position. Morris takes a look at the highly touted Bart and the Giants plans to use Bart as the catcher of the future.

The Giants’ Brandon Belt and Nick Hundley took the Los Angles Dodgers deep off starter Caleb Ferguson.  Belt ripped his 12th home run of the season and Hundley with his eight round tripper. Giants starting pitcher Chris Stratton got in a quality start going six innings, three hits, a run, one walk and struck out three hitters to shut down the Dodgers on Sunday 4-1.

Back to Bart, Bart is expected to visit AT&T Park on Tuesday night. He might even suit up and take a few swings, but that’s yet to be seen. The Giants signed Bart for a record $7.25 million the highest college signing for a position player.

San Francisco Giants update: The San Francisco Giants’ road problems continue after they dropped the opener of their three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night 3-2 at Dodger Stadium. The Giants are suffering on offense and couldn’t rally on Friday night.

The Dodgers are fighting to get into first place and they know the Giants are in a world of pain, losing four of their last five games, and are out their All-Star caliber players: pitcher Johnny Cueto and third baseman Evan Longoria with injuries.

The Giants were missing Brandon Belt due to an appendix surgery. Belt is scheduled to be suited up at Dodgers Stadium tonight and he was on a roll before he had to have the surgery. Belt made a fast recovery and is anxious to start swinging the bats.

The A’s are coming off a three-game sweep by the Houston Astros in a 7-3 loss on Thursday at the Oakland Coliseum. Can they stop the bleeding starting tonight as they face the Los Angeles Angels? The Astros’ starting pitcher Justin Verlander notched up win number nine against two loses and had command of the A’s line up.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca: Longoria expected to be out for 3 weeks after hit with 89 MPH fastball in hand

On the SF Giants podcast with Michael:

The San Francisco Giants’ Evan Longoria broke his hand during an at-bat against the Miami Marlins in game four on Thursday afternoon in Miami. Longoria will be out for an estimated three weeks and could be back by early July.

Longoria got hit in the back of the hand by an 89 MPH fast ball in the fourth inning. He realized after getting hit by the pitch that he couldn’t play or use the hand afterwards. Pablo Sandoval said Longoria is a great teammate, a great hitter, and Sandoval said he hopes his recovery is quick so that he could help the club in the postseason.

The Marlins almost swept the Giants, but Giant starter Ty Blach pitch 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball and the Giants wound up beating the Marlins 6-3 in 16 innings. Longoria was hitting .246, 10 home runs, 34 RBIs and committed 11 errors.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg and Amaury Pi Gonzalez: A’s struggle with pitching and inter-division games

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry and Amaury:

The Oakland A’s are 10-22 against their own division opponents. They’re nine games back. They have to win games against teams like Houston to compete in the AL West. A’s manager Bob Melvin agrees that the AL West is a good division, but the A’s have to play better.

Houston are tough customers. They’ve won six straight games coming into game two of the series with Oakland and they own the A’s this year. The Astros will start Justin Verlander (8-2) and the A’s will start Frankie Montas (3-0) on Thursday afternoon.

Pitcher Trevor Cahill is out with an Achillies tendon and the A’s have called up Chris Bassitt in his place. Bassitt was at the Coliseum on Wednesday night.

Headline Sports with Tony Renteria: Will Trump’s travel bans make some FIFA players banned from entering US?; Raiders’ Mack still holding out

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, right, welcomes representatives of the united bid — from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico — as soccer’s governing body selects its host for the 2026 FIFA World Cup during the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow, Russia.
SERGEI KARPUKHIN / REUTERS

On the Headline Sports podcast with Tony:

The 2026 World Cup soccer questions were raised during negotiations about bringing the games to the U.S. One concern that was raised was U.S. President Trump’s travel bans and travel restrictions.

Players from various countries are concerned if they’ll be able to travel to the U.S. to play in the 2026 World Cup. There are seven banned countries not permitted to have their citizens to enter the U.S. Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Soccer players from those countries could be left out and it could cause an imbalance during World Cup competition.

The U.S., Mexico and Canada are in unison in bringing the World Cup to North America. In Canada the World Cup will visit Montreal and Toronto but Vancouver had been left off the games list but as Vancouver officials said the event is eight years down the road and anything could change between now and then.

Oakland Raiders Khalil Mack continues to be hold out. Mack missed two mandatory practices on Tuesday and Wednesday. If he misses another practice, he will be facing a large fine if he doesn’t show up for Thursday.

Mack in the final year of his $13.8 million contract under a fifth year option. If Mack continues his hold out and misses all three mandated days for workouts, he’s looking at a $84,435 fine. Head coach Jon Gruden says that one of the main reasons he took the job in Oakland was because he was looking forward to working with Mack.
