SAN JOSE, Calif. — Day four of the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic was a big day for American tennis star Venus Williams, who is commonly known as one of the all-time greats and the older sister of Serena Williams. The well-known lady made her 2018 MSVC debut at the Spartan Tennis Complex on Thursday.

Here are the results of Thursday’s matches:

Ladies Singles — Round 2
ROU’s Mihaela Buzarnescu defeated USA’s Amanda Anisimova by a final score of 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.

GRE’s Maria Sakkari had a nearly perfect match when she held HUN’s Timea Babos to just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

AUS’ Ajla Tomljanovic crushed POL’s Magdalena Frech in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory.

Apparently, the Mubadala SVC saved the best for last in Thursday’s round of matches, as USA’s Venus Williams took on GBR’s Heather Watson in three hard-fought sets in which Williams won 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.

Notes
Madison Keys withdrew from her day match vs. Ajla Tomljanovic due to a right wrist injury. Lucky loser Magdalena Frech replaced Keys.

“I am really sorry to have to pull out of the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic,” said Keys. “I have been feeling pain in my wrist over the last couple of days and felt worse today. This event is one of my favorites and I was looking forward to playing here in San Jose, but want to thank the San Jose State University and Mubadala for pulling it together in such a short amount of time. I am excited to come back next year and play in front of your great fans.”

Danielle Collins signed autographs at 12 pm PDT in the retail booth. Also, Elise Mertens signed autographs in the Mubadala booth.

The MSVC gave a shoutout to one of their sponsors, Togo’s Sandwiches, and suggested on Twitter that pastrami-loving fans should visit a local Togo’s at 1430 Monterey Rd, 779 Story Rd or 4th & San Carlos and try their new Pretzelrami. Togo’s has been creating filling sandwiches since 1971.

Headline Sports podcast with London Marq: Did Urban Meyer know about the domestic abuse all along?; MLB players need to do tangible things to prove they’ve moved past racist tweets; plus more

On the Headline Sports podcast with London Marq:

#1 How much did Ohio State’s former head coach Urban Meyer know about his assistant coach Zach Smith’s domestic abuse towards his ex-wife Courtney Smith? Enough says Smith. She said she was friends with Meyer’s wife and addressed these issues to her and also knew for a fact that Meyer knew domestic abuse was going on with Smith attacking his wife.

#2 How will this impact and damage the Ohio State program as the regular season kicks off at the end of this month? With Meyer on on paid leave and Smith gone, will this scare off recruits and students planning to attend Ohio State this school year?

#3 The New York Yankees’ Sonny Gray said his racist tweets in 2012 were just an “inside joke.” Gray says he doesn’t feel that way today and that was something he was joking around with with a friend. Gray got booed during his last appearance for not only pitching bad, but heard fans calling him out about his racist tweets as he was smiling and leaving for the dugout after being pulled.

#4 In just a week, four MLB players with four racist tweets, Milwaukee Brewers’ Josh Hader, Atlanta Braves’ Sean Newcomb, Washington Nationals’ Trea Turner, and Gray had racist tweets uncovered. The question is, would these four players prove that their not racists now by taking on issues in the community by asking publicly “why isn’t there enough African Americans in Major League Baseball?” or “Why do most MLB teams not travel their Spanish play-by-play radio announcers and just have them limited to just home games or just weekend broadcasts?” These would be considered tangible projects. These players can take on if they were really sorry about what they said.

#5 EA Sports apologized for editing out the name of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick out of the Madden 19 NFL game in Big Sean’s song “Big Bank.” Sean had tweeted that Kaepernick’s name was left out of the game song that he lent to. EA Sports did a “oops my bad” and said they would put Kaepernick’s name back into the song, going forward with the new editions of the EA Madden 19 games starting August 6th.

Khalil Mack was a hold out during training camp, and on Wednesday, the top story coming out of the Oakland Raiders was putting Mack on the trade block. Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said last season Mack didn’t even pick off a pass until the 14th week of the season.

Gruden went on to say that the Raiders weren’t very good on defense last season. Gruden was hoping that Mack gets back in camp. Gruden said the Raiders need a better pass rush. The Raiders finished in the bottom 10 in the NFL on defense. The question is–will the Raiders trade Mack?

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Manaea has good control in A’s win over Jays; A’s get good pitching and offense in sweep

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry:

The Oakland A’s Sean Manaea picked up win #10 (10-7) as he didn’t surrender a run on five Toronto Blue Jay hits, going six innings, one run earned, and five strikeouts. Manaea had a lot of his pitches working for him on Wednesday to keep the Blue Jays off balance and was also able to keep runners off base.

A’s reliever JD Wendelken came in to relieve for Manaea in the seventh loaded the bases, but got the third out and came away unscathed except for one run in the 8-3 five-run win for Oakland. Part of the success for the A’s in July was their lineup hit consistently with an average of .290. They were able to make a number of comebacks in late innings.

The A’s have Thursday off and have three games with the Detroit Tigers at the Coliseum starting Friday night. For the Tigers, Blaine Hardy (4-3), and for the A’s, Brett Anderson (2-3), to open the series.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Giants to sell 125 lithos of Dwight Clark and Willie Mays holding their famous catch photos

On the SF 49ers podcast with David:

The San Francisco Giants have announced that they will sell a limited amount of autographed lithographs of the late 49ers wide receiver Dwight Clark and former San Francisco Giant legend Willie Mays, who is holding up his photo of making his catch in the 1954 World Series. The lithos are $487 each and there are only 125 available.

The 49ers have three tight ends in camp: George Kittle, Garrett Celek, and Cole Hikutuni. With a limited amount of tight ends in camp, can the 49ers open the season with only three tight ends?

San Francisco Giants podcast with Morris Phillips: Will Giants deal before deadline? McCutchen, Panik, or Bumgarner are names dropped

mercurynews.com photo: Madison Bumgarner #40 of the San Francisco Giants pitches against the Milwaukee Brewers in the top of the first inning at AT&T Park on July 27, 2018 in San Francisco, California

On Giants podcast with Morris Phillips:

#1 Will the Giants make any deals? Names that have come up: Andrew McCutchen, Joe Panik and Madison Bumgarner. Will the Giants seek a deal to get some leverage in their chase for a shot at the postseason?

#2 Giants catcher Buster Posey says the Giants are a streaky team. Sometimes, they’ll win eight of 10 and then they’ll win seven of nine. They lost two out of three to the Brewers and they opened up a three-game series in San Diego Monday night.

#3 With a right hamstring injury, Giants pull third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who will be sitting out on the DL just as Evan Longoria comes back to assume his position at third.

#4 Chase d’Arnaud has taken over first base for San Francisco in place of injured Brandon Belt. This is Belt’s third time on the DL this season.

#5 Giants are looking to get some hitting in the San Diego series–something they lacked in the series in Colorado, where they got swept.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Anti A’s ball park group trying to spread the news about traffic and congestion; flyers handed out in Oakland

ktvu.com photo: Artist rendition of a Jack London Square Oakland A’s stadium at Howard Terminal

On That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast:

They’re known as Protect Oakland’s Shoreline Economy who put out a flyer explaining why the Oakland A’s shouldn’t build at Jack London Square that it would impact traffic conditions, that hundreds of millions of tax dollars would be blown on a project that could be used for infrastructure for other city projects.

So who was behind such a flyer? According to the San Francisco Chronicle, there is a company that does scrap recycling next door to the proposed site and they deny having anything to do about the flyer but it was reported that former Senator Don Perata who had been advising the scrap plant about the stadium build.

The language in the flyer looked a lot similar to a prepared report for the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum Authority board of directors. Oakland A’s team president David Kaval said he didn’t know who wrote the flyer and never heard any complaints from the company or neighbors from Jack London Square. Kaval said that on the contrary the neighbors are in favor of the new park and see it as a economic improvement to the neighborhood.

Amaury has much more on this story and the latest on the A’s at http://www.sportsradioservice.com
