NHL Stanley Cup Finals podcast with Matt Harrington: With Sundqvist suspended, how much of a setback will it be for St. Louis?

missourinet.com photo: The St. Louis Blues’ Oskar Sundqvist puts the hit on the Boston Bruins’ Matt Grzelcyk in Game 2 in Boston, resulting in a one-game suspension for Sundqvist.

On the NHL Stanley Cup Finals podcast with Matt:

#1 Matt talks about St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist, who was suspended for a game for his elbowing the Boston Bruins’ Matt Grzelcyk.

#2 Was the suspension of Sundqvist justifiable and with Sundqvist out of the lineup. how much of impact is that for the Blues?

#3 Blues captain David Backes said that at this rate if this keep up there won’t be any defensemen left. “It’s from behind, elevated, into his head, into the glass. If that’s a two-minute penalty, I think there’s going to be a shortage of defensemen in this series by the end of it. That’s in somebody else’s hands. That’s something I think if I’m making that hit, I’m probably watching from the bleachers for a few.” said Backes.

#4 Will the Bruins come out in Game 3 fired up because of the hit on Grzelcyk or will they be satisfied with the league decision to suspend Sundqvist?

#5 Game 3, the first of two in St. Louis series, is tied 1-1. Matt tells us his thoughts on the upcoming Games 3 and 4.

Oakland A’s podcast with Joey Friedman: A’s have dropped three straight, what changed between now and their 10-game win streak?

photo from houstonchronicle.com: The Houston Astros’ Derek Fisher (21) crosses the plate past Oakland A’s catcher Josh Phegley (19) after Fisher’s eighth inning home run at the Oakland Coliseum on Friday night.

On the A’s podcast with Joey:

#1 The A’s lost again a tough one with A’s pitcher Mike Fiers going with a 2-0 lead, but the Astros touched him up in the top of the seventh for two runs to tie the game and he was then lifted for reliever Lou Trivino.

#2 The Houston Astros have a potent lineup and even with a two-run A’s lead, the Astros are very unpredictable when they could break out the bats.

#3 The A’s kept Astros hitter Michael Brantley ,who was hitting in three hole at bay. Brantley hit .329 and went 1-4 on Friday night.

#4 How tough is this third straight loss after the A’s had won 10 straight games?

#5 For Saturday night’s starters: Houston Astros’ Justin Verlander (8-2) vs. the A’s Brett Anderson (6-3)

Rough outing for Pomeranz in 9-6 loss to O’s

photo from mercurynews.com: San Francisco Giants pitcher Drew Pomeranz delivers a pitch against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Friday May 31st’s contest to open a three-game series.

By Jeremy Kahn

BALTIMORE — Things got off to a great start for the San Francisco Giants, but they all disappeared before a blink of an eye.

After scoring five runs in the top of the frame, Drew Pomeranz gave it all away in the bottom half and the Baltimore Orioles ended up defeating the Giants 9-6 before a crowd of 17,545 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Thats baseball, it humbles you pretty quick, said Mike Yastrzemski.

Dwight Smith, Jr., hit a grand slam to complete the first inning comeback and Trey Mancini added a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to add on to the damage that was suffered in the first inning.

Things got rough for Orioles starter Andrew Cashner in the top of the first inning, as he walked leadoff batter Joe Panik, then Yastrzemski began the hit parade, as he tripled down the right field line to score Panik.

Buster Posey then singled in Yastrzemski, and moved to third on a Pablo Sandoval single and then scored the third run of the inning on a Brandon Crawford sacrifice fly.

After Kevin Pillar, singled that loaded the bases, Steven Duggar got in on the act, as he singled to left field to score Sandoval and Evan Longoria.

All of that disappeared in the bottom of the first inning, as Pomeranz was unable to hold on to the lead.

Jonathan Villar got the rally started for the Orioles, as he walked, then Mancini singled and then the Orioles got on the board, when Renato Nunez singled to score Villar and on the errant Crawford throw, Mancini went to third.

It was a great play by Crawford, who dove into the hole to stop the ball from going into left field; however, his throw to Panik went behind him and Villar scored easily from third.

Mancini then scored on a single by Pedro Severino, and after Keon Broxton walked to load the bases, Smith, Jr., hit his first career grand slam to give the Orioles a 6-5 lead.

In all, that first inning took 40 minutes and saw 90 pitches thrown.

I cant think of one, said Bruce Bochy.

Yastrzemski tied up the game in the top of the second inning, as he powered his first major league home run into the right-center field seats. “Deep down, I always wanted to come here and hit one. Always. Now its a reality, and thats pretty special, said Yastrzemski.

Nice to get one, Yastrzemski added, who hit a Cashner fastball and met the gentleman after the game who caught the ball.

The man identified as Tim Smith received a signed bat from Yastrzemski and took a picture together.

Yastrzemski ended the night going 2-for-3 with a walk, as he continues to make a great impression in his first week in the majors.
Great nice by the kid, said Bochy.

Unfortunately, Pomeranz was unable to hold on to the tie, as Villar singled with one out and then Mancini smashed his 11th home run of the season and the Orioles reclaimed the lead.

That would be the end of the night for Pomeranz, who went 1.1 innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out two, as he saw his record fall to 1-5 on the season.

This was the shortest outing of Pomeranz’ career and continues a stretch where he was unable to go past five innings, as the streak now stands at five consecutive starts. It was the first career loss for Pomeranz when he received five-or-more runs, as he is now 19-1 when he receives that many runs.

I do not want to make excuses, said Pomeranz.

As for Cashner, who got roughed up in that first inning, he ended up with the victory, as he went the necessary five innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, walking five and did not require a strikeout and saw his record improve to 6-2 on the season.

Dereck Rodriguez went 4.2 innings, allowing just two hits, walking two, striking out two and hitting a batter.

He used all four pitches, said Bochy.

Since returning to the majors, Rodriguez has pitched twice out of the bullpen and it was the fourth of his career.

I came out of the bullpen in winter ball, said Rodriguez, who was a starter for most of last season.

Sam Dyson came on to replace Rodriguez, and was greeted ratherly rudely, as Nunez slammed a 444 foot home run into the left field seats.

NOTES: Brandon Belt extended his hitting streak up to six games, and has a six-game hitting streak versus the Orioles and is (9-for-29) with two doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs during the streak.

On the flipside of the Belt streak, Posey snapped a 0-for-17 streak against the Orioles and was 1-for-21 prior to getting two hits in four at-bats. Overall, he is now 3-for-25 lifetime against the Orioles, the lowest versus any opponent.

As a starting rotation, this will be a month that the Giants will want to forget and definitely put behind them. They ended the month with a 7.32 earned run average (96 earned runs in 118 innings pitched). That is the highest earned run average by a Giants starting staff since they moved to San Francisco in 1958. The previous high was a 6.56 earned run average in September of 2006.

Smith Jr.s grand slam was the second of the season by an Orioles player, with the first coming on May 6 off the bat of Villar and the Orioles defeated the defending World Series Champion Boston Red Sox 4-1.

This weekend marks the Giants first appearance since the 2004 season, when they won two out of three.

The starting rotation consisted of Dustin Hermanson, Noah Lowry and Jerome Williams. Barry Bonds went 5-for-11 with two home runs, five runs batted in and was walked six times. In the second game of a doubleheader on June 12, 2004, Bonds was walked five times (four of those intentionally).

UP NEXT: Shaun Anderson looks to get the Giants back into the win column on Saturday afternoon, as he will make his first ever start on the road. David Hess will take the mound on Saturday, as he looks to improve on his 1-6 record.

Preview of the A’s series with the Astros this weekend

click2houston.com file photo: Carlos Correa #1 of the Houston Astros reacts after hitting a two-run home run during the seventh inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the 2017 World Series at Minute Maid Park on October 29, 2017 in Houston, Texas.

By Jerry Feitelberg

OAKLAND — The Houston Astros will be in town to play three games against the A’s this weekend. The Astros are in first place in the AL West. The Astros have a record of 37-20 and have a comfortable 7 1/2 game lead on the second-place Oakland A’s who are 29-27. The A’s and Astros have played five times this year, and the Astros lead the series 4-1.

The Astros, who won the 2017 World Series, are loaded. They have several All-Stars on the team, but they have been bitten by the injury bug. Jose Altuve, who was the 2017 MVP, is on the 10-day IL with a hamstring strain. There are reports that he will be coming off the IL on Friday.

The strangest injury is to Astros shortstop Carlos Correa, who said he fractured his rib while getting a massage at his home.

“I’m extremely disappointed about not being on the field with my teammates. I sustained the rib fracture during a massage at my home on Tuesday,” Correa said.

Correa added that getting the injury the way he did was strange and unusual.

“To sustain an injury in such an unusual way makes it even more frustrating. However, I will work hard to get back on the field as quickly as possible to help our team achieve our goal of winning another championship.”

Correa is expected to miss four to six weeks of action.

The shortstop, went on the IL yesterday with a broken rib. The injury occurred while he was getting a massage in his Houston home. He will be out for four to six weeks.

Centerfielder George Springer has a grade two left hamstring strain and will not play this weekend.

Aledmys Diaz, who was filling in for Altuve at second base, is also on the 10-day IL with a hamstring strain.

Nevertheless, the Astros are still an excellent team. They have a solid rotation featuring Justin Verlander, a former Cy Young award winner and MVP, Gerrit Cole, Brad Peacock, and Wade Miley. Their bullpen is solid with Will Harris, Chris Devenski, and closer Roberto Osuna.

The Astros probably will move Alex Bregman from third to shortstop. Bregman is a power hitter and will be a candidate for MVP this year. First baseman Yuli Guriel will move from first to third. The Astros brought up Jack Mayfield to play second. Tyler White will fill-in at first.

The Astros signed Michael Brantley as a free agent. He is playing well in left field. Jake Marisnick will be in centerfield, and former A’s fan favorite, Josh Reddick will be on patrol in right field. Reddick is having a solid season for Houston and is one of the reasons the Astros are in first place.

The A’s will face Brad Peacock on Friday night. The former A’s pitcher found a home in Houston and has really improved. Peacock is 5-2 with a 3.19 ERA. He pitches well in night games as he has an ERA of just 1.38. Peacock is 3-0 since going to a full windup. Mike Fiers will go for the A’s. Fiers is 4-3 with a 5.00 ERA. Fiers is 1-2 with a 7.32 ERA in four career starts against Houston.

The A’s will have to be on the top of their game as they face Justin Verlander on Saturday and Gerrit Cole on Sunday. Lefty Brett Anderson (6-3, 3.86 ERA) has been consistent for Oakland this year and has gone six innings or more in four of his last five starts. Chris Bassitt (3-1, 3.27 ERA) starts on Sunday.

The A’s, who won 10 in a row before being beaten in the last two games by the LA Angels, would like to get back on the winning track against the Astros. It may be difficult, but the A’s have players that can do a lot of damage. Matt Chapman, Matt Olson, Marcus Semien, Stephen Piscotty, Mark Canha, and Josh Phegley all can send the ball flying out of the park. The A’s DH Khris Davis may return soon.

The A’s have played solid defense this season, and the offense can be formidable. The starting rotation has been better of late. The bullpen has had its ups and downs, but it is still one of the better ones in the American League.

The A’s would like to take two out three from the Astros. The club would love to have the stand packed to see two good teams have a go at it.
