It was bombs away as Rockets blow out Warriors 135-105

By Jerry Feitelberg

San Francisco- The Warriors resumed play Thursday night against the visiting Houston Rockets. The Rockets, playing with a smaller lineup since the trade of Clint Capela, raced up and down the court. Their defense smothered the W’s in the first quarter. The Rockets connected on threes all night long. The Rockets, having been eliminated in the playoffs several times by the Warriors, had to enjoy pummeling the young W’s.

The Warriors only came early in the first period. They were leading 4-3 when Houston went on a 17-3 run. The Rockets continued to pour it on and finished the first quarter 38-17. The game was over for all intents and purposes at that point.

The Warriors offense picked up in the second quarter. The Rockets won the period 34-33 and finished the first half with a 22-point advantage. The Rockets made 15 threes in 26 tries. The Warriors made just one. James Harden had 16, Russell Westbrook 17 to pace the Rockets’ attack. P.J.Tucker finished the half with 15. He made five threes. Andrew Wiggins led the W’s with 10. Marquese Chriss had 8.

The third quarter belonged to Houston. Harden, Westbrook, and Robert Covington made it look easy as they outscored the W’s 37-27 to finish the third quarter leading by thirty-two 109-77.

Houston removed the starters about halfway through the fourth quarter. With 6:04 left to play, Russell Westbrook was called for a foul as he shoved Damion Lee to the floor. Westbrook, who had a technical foul called on him earlier in the game, lost his cool and had to be restrained by several members of the Houston staff. Westbrook was ejected from the game. He leads the league with 13 technicals. Draymond Green is second with 12. Play resumed, but the W’s could do nothing as they lost by a final score of 135-105

Game Notes and Stats- Looking at the stat sheet, it doesn’t seem that the W’s didn’t play that poorly. They were 44 for 91 (48.4%) from the floor. The Rockets were 45 for 87 from the floor. The reason for the huge loss was the fact that the Rockets made 25 threes. The Warriors made 7.

The Warriors had four starters in double figures. Andrew Wiggins finished with 22. Jordan Poole 19, Damion Lee 13, Marquese Chriss 10. Eric Paschall and Juan Toscano-Anderson, both coming off the bench, knocked 13 and 10.

James Harden paced the Rockets with 29. Westbrook had 21, Robert Covington 20, Jeff Green 17, P.J.Tucker 15, and Danuel House 11.

The Warriors are now 12-44 for the year. Houston improved to 35-20.

The Warriors host the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday. The Pelicans’ big rookie Zion Williamson will be making his first appearance in San Francisco. The game will start at 5:30 pm at the Chase Center.

Coyotes hold off ‘desperate’ Sharks with late empty-net goals 6-3

GLENDALE, Ariz. — If there’s such a thing as key empty-net goals, the Arizona Coyotes came up with two of them to put away the San Jose Sharks Tuesday.

With the Sharks mounting a late rally, Hunter Garland and Taylor Hall each converted empty-netters to seal a 6-3 victory, as Arizona moved back into first place in the NHL Pacific Division while snapping a three-game losing skid and stopping San Jose’s winning streak at two.

With the Coyotes leading 4-2 in the third period, Evander Kane scored his team-leading 19th goal of the season on the power play to pull the Sharks to within 4-3.

In the final two minutes, Conor Garland and Taylor Hall each popped in empty-net tallies while San Jose was employing a sixth attacker.

“It was just simple plays that got us back in it in the third period,” Hall, who had two goals and an assist, said. “In that third period, we played to our talent really well.”

Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said, “I liked our response against San Jose. They were making a press there in the second. They’re a good team; we were playing a desperate team and I thought we answered the bell when we had to.”

Kessel’s 10th goal of the season for Arizona opened the scoring at 12:03 of the first period. After Derek Stepan dug the puck out along the boards in the neutral zone, he sent a headman pass to Kessel, who fired a wrister from the right circle over San Jose goaltender Aaron Dell’s glove and off the crossbar.

Arizona made it 2-0 on its second power play opportunity. With Stefan Noesen serving a tripping minor, Kessel scored his second goal of the night, taking a centering pass from Christian Dvorak from behind the net and sent a one-timer from the slot past Dell at 5:01 of the second period.

San Jose responded at 6:42 of the second when Kevin Labanc mopped up on Kane’s original shot from just outside the crease, pushing It past Adin Hill, cutting the Arizona lead to 2-1.

Nearly three minutes later, Timo Meier scored the equalizer on his 16th goal of the season. Patrick Marleau threaded the needle on a lead pass to Meier, who slipped a wrist shot past Hill.

“Even in the first period, we played well,” Meier said. “We made some mistakes and gave them some chances. They cashed in on some and in the second period, we came back. We fought back, and in the end, we couldn’t finish it.”

Arizona regained the lead at 17:14 of the second period, when Hall took a rebound and redirected Jordan Oesterle’s original shot from the deep slot for his 11th goal.

Lawson Crouse’s 11th goal of the season put the Coyotes up 4-2 at 8:09 of the third period.

“I thought we were resilient coming back from (being down) 2-0, even at the end on the goalie-pull coming back,” Sharks coach Bob Boughner said. “We didn’t execute well enough tonight. It started on our breakouts. I think we were sloppy going back or making clean exits.

“I thought that we got sloppy a little bit on our penalty kills, and that’s what happens.”

The Sharks’ road trip continues at Colorado on Thursday and Vancouver on Saturday before taking their nine-day break.

“We were sloppy on execution, turning over pucks at the wrong time in the wrong situations,” Boughner said. “Give those guys (Coyotes) credit. They played well. I don’t think that we thought we were ever out of the game.

“We kept pushing, but tonight we just weren’t good enough. It’s one of those games where we’re going to have to make some corrections and come out a little more structured against Colorado.”

SHARK BITES: Arizona’s Taylor Hall recorded his 132nd career multi-point game and his third since joining the Coyotes. … Coyotes RW Phil Kessel recorded his 55th career multi-goal game. … San Jose scratches were Logan Couture (injured), Tim Heed and Joachim Blichfeld. Blichfeld was called up from the AHL Barracuda on Monday. … Coming into the game, the Sharks own the NHL’s best penalty kill, killing off 88.2 percent. San Jose also leads the NHL with least power play goals allowed with 20. … Attendance at Gila River Arena was 14,716.

Bumgarner leaves after getting hit on elbow in Giants’ win

By Jeremy Kahn

SAN FRANCISCO — Madison Bumgarner was not around when Austin Slater gave the San Francisco Giants the lead for good.

Bumgarner was forced to leave the game after the bottom of the second inning, as he was drilled on the left forearm by a Jose Martinez line drive that went for an infield single.

X-Rays came back negative, and Bumgarner ended up with a left elbow contusion.

Slater gave the Giants the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, as he hit an opposite field grand slam and the Giants defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 8-4 before a crowd of 32,487 at Oracle Park.

Pablo Sandoval led off the inning with a single, then after a Brandon Crawford strikeout, Kevin Pillar came up with his second hit of the night. Joe Panik then reached on an error when Tyler ONeill lost the ball in the lights, and finally, Slater gave the Giants the lead on his first career grand slam.

Bumgarner went just two innings, allowing one run, scattering four hits and striking out two, as he did not fare in the decision.

Miles Mikolas lasted just four innings for the Cardinals, as he allowed five runs (four earned), six hits and struck out 6; however, he lost for the ninth time this season.

The Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as Tommy Edman led off the game with a single, and then Martinez lined the ball off of Bumgarner’s left forearm for an infield single.

Paul Goldschmidt gave the Cardinals the lead, as he singled to score Edman from second base.

Like the opener, the Giants got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, as Brandon Belt singled to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a Sandoval sacrifice fly.

The bullpen was solid for the Giants, as Sam Dyson, Reyes Moronta, Mark Melancon, and Will Smith went the final seven innings to secure the victory for the Giants.

Dyson went two innings, allowing just one hit and raised his record to 3-0 on the season.

Home plate umpire Mike Everitt, like Bumgarner, was forced to leave the game in the sixth inning, as he took a foul ball off the mask on a line drive hit by O’Neill. Three umpires finished the game.

Mike Yastrzemski got in on the hit parade in the bottom of the seventh inning, as he singled, then stole his first major league base and then scored on an Alex Dickerson triple to right-center field. Sandoval then picked up his second hit of the night, as he smashed a two-run home run off of Tyler Webb.

It was the 11th home run of the season by Sandoval, and his first as a right-handed batter since hitting one off of Caleb Smith of the Miami Marlins on June 11, 2018, at Marlins Park.

Things got interesting in the top of the eighth inning, as the Cardinals scored three runs off a Goldschmidt three-run home run off the Arcade Garage in right field to get the Cardinals within four runs. Tony Watson, who gave up the three-run home run to Goldschmidt was able to get out of the inning without allowing any more damage.

That was the 13th career home run for Goldschmidt at Oracle Park, the most by any active opposing player in the major leagues

Closer Will Smith was summoned in the top of the ninth inning and gave up a pinch-hit single to Yadier Molina, however, he then got Edman to ground into a force play and then Martinez grounded into a double play to end the small rally and the game.

NOTES: Slater is the 22nd Giants player to hit a pinch-hit grand slam since the team moved to San Francisco in 1958.

Rich Aurilia was the last Giants player to hit a pinch-hit grand slam which came on June 12, 2003, against the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park.

Slater is only the second Giants player to hit a pinch-hit grand slam at Oracle Park since it opened in 2000, and Russ Davis hit it on August 21, 2000, against the Florida Marlins

Joey Bart and Heliot Ramos will represent the Giants at the Sirius/XM Futures Game at Progressive Field in Cleveland on Sunday afternoon. Bart is hitting .242 with six home runs and 21 RBI on the season in just 33 games for the San Jose Giants, while Ramos, who is also playing for San Jose, is hitting .298 with nine home runs and 29 RBI on the season in 52 games.

Bart missed a considerable amount of time with a broken left arm that was suffered on April 16, when he was hit by a pitch against the Stockton Ports at Municipal Stadium.

UP NEXT: Jeff Samardzija closes out the first half on Sunday afternoon, as he takes the Oracle Park mound and will face Jack Flaherty, who will take the ball for the Cardinals in their final game before the All-Star break.

Earthquakes dominate Galaxy in 3-0 Clasíco victory

by Marko Ukalovic and London Marq

STANFORD, Calif- The San Jose Earthquakes put on a show in front of a record setting crowd in defeating the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-0 in the first round of the annual California Classico on Saturday evening at Stanford Stadium.

With the win, San Jose is currently on a six game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) and for the moment jumped ahead of Minnesota FC and the Houson Dynamo for fifth place in the Western Conference with 25 points. Los Angeles is still in second place with 31 points.

It didn’t take long for San Jose (7-6-5) to draw first blood and send the 50,850 in attendance, the most to ever attend a Classico game, into a frenzy. In the 11th minute, Jackson Yueill’s free kick from 30 yards out found Magnus Eriksson. He fed a pass over to Vako who took one dribble to the right and fired a shot past Galaxy goalkeeper (and former Quake) David Bingham into the far left corner for his fourth goal of the season and third in the past two games.

The Quakes controlled the play from the beginning and all the way up to the end of the first half despite the possession being even at 50%. They had six shots on goal compared to only two for the Galaxy.

“It was a great spectacle”, said Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda, coaching in his first Cali Classico. “It’s always important to win. We know we have to keep on this path. We have improved and we should keep on improving.”

Los Angeles (10-7-1) was finally able to get a couple of scoring chances near the end of the first 45 minutes.  Dave Romney’s shot from 10 yards out was saved by Quakes goalkeeper Daniel Vega in the 38th minute. Galaxy leading goal scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s header off a set piece from 6 yards out was also thrawted away by Vega.

“We had a few good chances”, said Galaxy midfielder Perry Kitchen. “But the broke us on the counter twice.”

The Quakes back line did well to collapse in the middle of the box to keep Ibrahimovic and the rest of the Galaxy’s offense from creating quality chances.

San Jose put the game away in the 83rd minute as Vako led a counter attack. He crossed the ball going from left to right over to Shea Salians, who entered as a substitute in the 75th minute, and he rifled a shot into the upper left corner to beat Bingham for his fifth goal of the season.

“I’ve just been blessed to be put in good situations in this game”, said Salians who played his first game back from an injury. “It’s always fun to play well and score in front of 50,000 people.  I think we could’ve scored more goals. It was a good game for us.”

San Jose added on another goal just two minutes later in the 85th minute when Tommy Thompson carried the ball in from the right slot, dribbled around a Galaxy defender and then fired a shot that deflected off a Galaxy defender into the back of the net for an own goal that gave the Quakes a commanding 3-0 lead.

“I told him (Almeyda) ‘quiero esta en la concha’ I want to be on the field”, said Thompson regarding how he has been able to adapt to switching to play as a defender. “If one of the best coaches in the world says you can play this position, in your mind you gotta think I can play this position as well. It’s been new for me but it’s been a special year for me as well.”

Vega was huge in the net stopping all five shots on goal for his second consecutive shutout in just three days.

GAME NOTES: Los Angeles midfielder Flavio Alvarez was issued a yellow card in the 67th minute for an illegal tackle attempt.

Salians was isssued a yellow card for taking off his jersey in his post goal celebration.

Since 2003 San Jose is now 13-8-3 at home versus Los Angeles.

UP NEXT: The Quakes take on Minnesota FC on Wednesday 7/3 at 5:00pm at Allianz Field.

Dickerson continues hitting spree, Giants edge Snakes 7-4

PHOENIX — For the second night in a row, the kids are getting it done for the San Francisco Giants.

Outfielder Alex Dickerson picked up where he left off on Friday, and Mike Yastrzemski homered in the ninth, leading the Giants to their second win in the three-game NL West series against Arizona on Saturday, downing the Diamondbacks 7-4.

Dickerson drove in three runs with a pair of doubles, and Yastrzemski, grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, hit his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the top of the ninth.

“I like his approach,’ Giants Manager Bruce Bochy said of Dickerson. “He doesn’t chase pitches, he’s disciplined up there. Sometimes, a guy just needs another chance, especially with him and what he’s dealt with.

“He’s always shown he can hit, but he’s always had to deal with the injuries. Hopefully he’ll stay healthy.”

After Giants starter Tyler Beede struggled through the first four innings,
Trevor Gott (4-0) picked up the win in relief. Gott, Mark Melancon, Sam Dyson, and Tony Watson combined to hold the D-backs scoreless over four innings, and Will Smith threw a perfect ninth to earn his 20th save.

“I’ve said it before, they’re so reliable and have so much confidence,” Beede said. ‘We needed them for five innings and that was huge. They picked me up in the fifth, then hand the ball to the next guy and let him do his job. It was a super impressive night for the bullpen and a great team win.”

Dickerson, Kevin Pillar and Brandon Crawford each had two hits in the Giants’ 10-hit attack.

Arizona jumped on Beede for three runs in the first inning. RBI singles by Adam Jones and Christian Walker drove in two; the third run came on a double steal — Walker took second while Edurardo Escobar (who walked) stole home from third.

The Giants bounced back with two runs in the top of the second off losing pitcher Zack Godley (3-5) on a run-scoring double by Dickerson, followed by an RBI single by Crawford.

San Francisco surged ahead to stay at 5-3 with a three-run rally in the third. A two-RBI double by Dickerson, again followed by a run-scoring single by Crawford, were the key blows.

David Peralta led off the Diamondbacks third with a base hit and scored when Escobar hit into a fielder’s choice, pulling Arizona to within 5-4.

The weekend series concludes on Sunday afternoon with a pitching matchup of righthanders — Shaun Anderson (2-2, 4.08) for the Giants and Merrill Kelly (7-7, 3.99) for the D-Backs.

GIANTS JOTTINGS: Arizona INF Domingo Leyba made his MLB debut Saturday and got a pinch-hit single in his first at-bat. Leyba came to the D-Backs in 2014 along with P Robbie Ray for SS Didi Gregorius. Diamondbacks P Zach Grienke made his seventh career pinch-hitting appearance in the fourth inning, striking out for Arizona starter Zack Godley. … Eduardo Escobar’s steal of home was the first for a Diamondback since Paul Goldschmidt did it in 2017. … On Friday, San Francisco OF Alex Dickerson joined an elite group who, in the last 30 years, picked up six runs batted in playing in their first game with their new team. Elias Sports Bureau reports the others are Sam Horn (Baltimore, 1990), Darrin Jackson (Minnesota, 1997), Calvin Pikering (Kansas City, 2004), and Starlin Castro (Chi. Cubs, 2010). … Dickerson is also the third Giant ever to hit a grand slam in his first game with the club in New York or San Francisco, joining Bobby Bonds (1968) and Brandon Crawford (2011). … The Giants are in the midst of playing 20 games in 20 days; their next day off is July 4. … Saturday’s attendance — 32,082.

PHOENIX — In 24 hours, things changed for the better offensively for the San Francisco Giants.

On Friday, the Giants couldn’t get a key hit when needed. On Saturday, it was key hits to spare.

San Francisco’s 11-hit attack was backed a strong start from Madison Bumgarner, as the Giants defeated Arizona 8-5.

Seven different Giants drove in runs, led by Brandon Crawford with two. Steven Duggar, Buster Posey, Brandon Belt, Evan Longoria, Mac Williamson and Pablo Sandoval each knocked in a run.

“You could really see the difference tonight,” Giants Manager Bruce Bochy said. “The hitters were doing a nice job of getting on base. We had a lot of big hits, extra-base hits, and we did the little things well.”

Bumgarner (3-4) worked 61/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits. He struck out six and walked three.

“I thought he threw real good,” Bochy said. “His stuff was good. And with that lineup in this ballpark, a really nice job. And he had good command of his pitches all night.

Longoria’s two-out hit in the first inning drove in Joe Panik, who led off the game with an infield single. The Giants rallied for three runs in the third, with Duggar’s RBI triple, Posey’s run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly to center by Crawford the key blows giving San Francisco a 4-0 lead.

Eduardo Escobar’s 10th home run of the season into the left field seats put the Diamondbacks on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Arizona cut the Giants’ lead to 4-2 in the fifth when Adam Jones singled in Blake Swihart, who led off the inning with a walk.

San Francisco pushed two more runs across in the sixth on an RBI triple by Crawford, who scored two batters later on a single by Williamson.

The Diamondbacks chased Bumgarner in the bottom of the seventh after Nick Ahmed walked and scored from second on pinch-hitter John Ryan Murphy’s double down the left field line.

Adam Jones drove in Carson Kelly (who walked) with a ground out off San Francisco reliever Sam Dyson, pulling Arizona to within 6-4. But with two out in the San Francisco eighth, Sandoval — pinch-hitting for Dyson — hit a solo home run, giving the Giants a 7-4 lead.

“How about Pablo, huh?” Bochy said. “It’s nice to start him, and it’s nice to bring him off the bench to pinch-hit. He’s been the silver lining through our struggles.”

San Francisco extended its lead in the ninth to 8-4 when Brandon Belt’s seventh home run of the season reached the swimming pool in right-center.

Arizona closed its deficit to three when Carson Kelly hit a solo home run in the ninth, but closer Will Smith struck out Alex Avila, Adam Jones and Ketel Marte in what became a non-save situation.

In Sunday afternoon’s series finale, Robbie Ray (3-1, 3.14) starts for the Diamondbacks. San Francisco has yet to announce its starter.

GIANT JOTTINGS: Sandoval’s pinch home run in the eighth inning was the second of his career. The first came on May 8, 2018, at Philadelphia. … Gi Belt’s ninth-inning homer into the Chase Field swimming pool was the second overall of the season. Ex-Giant Hunter Pence hit one earlier this season for Texas. … D-Backs OF Adam Jones has hit safely in his last seven games. … Giants 2B Joe Panik has a streak of reaching base safely in 16 straight games, by hit or walk. … The attendance at Chase Field on Saturday was 25,014; Friday’s attendance was 26,806.

Hot-shooting Sun Devils rout Cardinal 80-62

TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State Coach Bobby Hurley was wearing his black shirt on Wednesday because, he explained, “It’s my gangster shirt.

“Our guys played like gangsters tonight, and the guys delivered. It was a great win for us.”

Stanford, playing without leading scorer KZ Okpala, tried everything defensively, but couldn’t contain the Sun Devils in an 80-62 Pac-12 men’s basketball loss at Wells Fargo Arena.

Going into the game, Stanford, which defeated the Sun Devils 85-71 on Jan. 12 at Maples Pavilion, had won five of its last six games, six of its last eight.
The win keeps Arizona State (18-8, 9-5) in third place in the conference, while the Cardinal (14-12, 7-7) dropped to seventh place in the Pac-12 race.

“We’ve done a great job all season of not getting too high or getting too low,” Cardinal Coach Jerod Haase said. “It was certainly disappointing, considering how hard the guys played, and the passion they played with.

“We didn’t play well, especially shooting the basketball. We have to be more effective if we’re going to get some more wins.”

Okpala, who averages 17.4 points per game for the Cardinal, did not play due to what Haase called “an upper body injury,’ adding that there’s no timetable for Okpala’s return.

“I don’t think it affected our shooting, but I think it affected the game because he’s so talented,” Haase said. “The guys shooting the shots were the guys I wanted shooting. They’re very talented.”

Remy Martin and Rob Edwards led the Sun Devils with 16 points each. Martin added six assists and two steals; Edwards had four assists. Martin, Edwards and Luguentz Dort each grabbed five rebounds, as ASU held a 38-32 rebounding edge.

Josh Sharma was Stanford’s top scorer with 17 points — 10 of them in the first half. Oscar Da Silva was next with 15 points. Sharma and Ryan Cormac had seven and six rebounds, respectively.

Defensively, Arizona State held the Cardinal 38 percent shooting (21-of-55) — 2-of-20 from behind the 3-point arc. That lack of firepower hurt Stanford from late in the second half to throughout the second half, when the Cardinal couldn’t get any closer than seven points.

“It was a combination of everything,” Haase said. “We had some great opportunities around the rim, and some open 3’s that weren’t effective. Then, Arizona State has a very talented team that had enough makes to never let us get too close.”

After each team scored within the opening minute, both the Sun Devils and Cardinals went nearly 3 ½ minutes without scoring until Sharma hit a jumper in the paint.

Arizona State led most of the first half, but the Cardinal stayed close, pulling to within 35-32 on Marcus Sheffield’s 3-pointer at 1:43. But the Devils made a late 7-2 run, capped by Martin’s long 3-pointer, giving ASU a 42-34 halftime lead.

From there, the Sun Devils gradually extended their lead. Zylan Cheatham’s 3-pointer at 4:50 of the second half put ASU up 66-52, capping another 7-2 run. De’Quon Lake’s free throw with 40 seconds left gave Arizona State an 80-60 lead, with an announced crowd of 10,327 roaring its approval.

The Sun Devils shot 51 percent (27-of-53) from the field, including 9-of-22 3-pointers (41 percent), and handled the Cardinal’s various defensive switches from man-to-man to various zones.

“We worked on it,” Hurley said. “We knew they would play man and some 2-3 and a 1-3-1, so we were prepared for what they’ve been doing recently.”

“ASU plays hard. They do a nice job of pressuring the basketball,” Haase said. “They’re great on their ball-screen coverages and put us back on our heels a little bit.

“But in the first half, we had too many turnovers. Some of the shots could have gone in, but the reality is that (ASU) did a nice job.”

In the second half, Stanford free throw shooters were 8-of-17 against the vaunted Curtain of Distraction.

The Cardinal’s southwest road trip continues with a visit to Tucson Sunday to face Arizona. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.

Barracuda douse the Heat with 6-4 victory

@sjbarracuda: The San Jose Barracuda Maxim Letunov (84) puts one on net against Stockton Heat goalie Nick Schneider (30) Saturday night at Stockton Arena

by Marko Ukalovic

The San Jose Barracuda started off a quick and never looked back as they scored three first period goals en route to a 6-4 victory over their Nor Cal rival the Stockton Heat on Saturday evening at the Stockton Arena. The win snapped the Cuda’s four-game losing streak on the road.

Alex True and San Jose (12-3-1-2) drew first blood before the game was even two minutes old. True scored his fourth goal of the season at the 1:25 mark of the first period, putting the puck past Heat goalie Nick Schneider’s five-hole (6-2-0). Cavan Fitzgerald and Francis Perron received assists.

The Cuda would double their lead 50 seconds later when Maxim Letunov
threaded a pass from the right wing to Manny Weiderer, who stood atop the crease on the near swiped it in to give San Jose a 2-0 lead. Weiderer’s fifth goal of the season came at the 2:15 mark. Jeremy Roy also received the secondary assist.

Captain John McCarthy concluded the three unanswered goals by San Jose in the first period as he scored his scored fourth goal of the season tipping in a shot by Fitzgerald at the 16:46 mark. It marked Fitzgerald’s second assist on the night. Rourke Chartier also received the secondary assist.

In the second period, Stockton (11-11-1-0) would break through early on when Glenn Gawdin’s initial shot was stopped by Cuda’s goalie Antoine Bibeau (5-2-2) but Matthew Phillips jammed in the loose rebound for his fifth goal of the season at the 2:21 mark. Dillon Dube received the secondary assist.

In what would be the turning point in the game, San Jose regained their three-goal lead when Jeffery Truchon-Viel spun in a puck in from close range at the 4:01 mark.

San Jose extended their lead to 5-1 after Jayden Halbgewachs received a pass wide open in the slot from True and buried it past Schneider for his sixth goal of the season at the 6:24 mark. The goal snapped a seven-game goaless drought for Halbgewachs.

Schneider’s was sent to the showers right after allowing five goals on only 14 shots. Jon Gillies came in mop-up duty for the rest of the game.

Spencer Foo scored the first of his two goals on the night when Alan Quine fed a pass to over to a wide-open Foo on the back door, who swept it past Bibeau for his seventh goal of the season at the 8:56 mark.

In the third period, Stockton made it 5-3 early into the final frame. Scott Sabourin snapped a shot past Bibeau into the short side of the goal for his second goal on the season at the 3:06 mark.

Chartier then finished off the scoring for the Cuda with an empty-netter at the 17:32 mark. Dylan Gambrell and Bibeau were credited with assists.

Foo completed the scoring with his eight goal and second of the evening to make the score look respectable with 49 seconds left in the contest but it was too little, too late for Stockton, who are 1-5 against the Cuda on the season.

Bibeau earned the victory after stopping 26 of 30 Stockton shots, while Schneider suffered the loss and Gillies (4-7-1) took a no-decision after stopping all 12 shots he faced in 32 minutes and 35 seconds of work.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 0/3 on the power play. Stockton was 0/1.

With the victory, it was San Jose’s third straight against the Heat and improved their record at Stockton Arena to 3-0 on the season. The win also placed San Jose atop the AHL with a .750 winning percentage

The announced attendance was 3,080.

UP NEXT: The Barracuda return home on Monday, Dec. 3 to host the San Diego Gulls at 7:00 pm at SAP Center.
