San Jose Earthquakes match wrap: Quakes blank Whitecaps 1-0 end Vancouver’s win streak

The San Jose Earthquakes went on the road for Saturday night’s matchup against the undefeated Vancouver Whitecaps and handed the Whitecaps their first loss of 2026 with a 1-0 shutout at BC Place in Vancouver.

The Earthquakes were doing a good job putting pressure on the Whitecaps’ defense early on, but some errant passes and turnovers ruined some scoring chances.

Daniel was forced to make a big save in the 30th minute when AZ Jackson danced around the defense, firing a dangerous shot on goal. Moments later, Daniel was forced to make another big save to deny a Vancouver header attempt.

In the 31st minute, Timo Werner was shown a yellow card. Oddly though, Werner was sitting on the bench.

The Quakes had a great scoring opportunity in the 33rd minute. Preston Judd had a center pass which found Jamar Ricketts, but the ensuing shot went just wide of the goal.

Beau Leroux broke the deadlock in stoppage time of the first half with a shot from well outside of the box to make it 1-0 heading into halftime.

Both teams made a change to start the second half as Tomas Muller entered the game for Vancouver and Ian Harkes took the field for San Jose.

Werner and Vitor Costa entered the game in the 54th minute taking the place of Ricketts and an injured DeJuan Jones.

The Earthquakes maintained their lead for the second half, and ultimately walked away with a 1-0 victory over a very strong opponent.

Bay FC match wrap: Bay no match for Angel City in 3-1 loss

SAN JOSE–After kicking off the 2026 season with a win against Denver, Bay FC were back at PayPal Park on Saturday evening to play Angel City FC for the first time this season it was not the match result that Bay was looking for coming up two goals short in a 3-1 loss.

The game also marked the return of former Bay FC defender Savy King to the Angel City starting lineup following an on-field cardiac event last May.

It didn’t take long for the game’s first goal, as Angel City scored in the fourth minute. Sveindis Jonsdottir got through the Bay defense and only had to beat Jordan Silkowitz to put the goal away, giving the side from Los Angeles an early 1-0 lead.

After the goal, Bay FC was doing anything they could to generate chances. They earned quite a few free kicks and corners, but were unable to put them in the back of the net. Maddie Moreau was shown the game’s first yellow card in the 27th minute.

Angel City doubled their lead in the 32nd minute, this time with the goal coming off the foot of Gisele Thompson. Just seconds after the goal, Jonsdottir was shown Angel City’s first yellow card of the night. Angel City then carried their 2-0 lead into halftime.

To start the second half, Emma Coates took off Karlie Lema and replaced her with Keira Barry. In the 50th minute, the debuting Cristiana Girelli rushed past the Angel City defense. The defense caught up, forcing her to rush a shot which didn’t challenge the goalkeeper.

Angel City got their third goal of the night off of a corner. The ball sailed in, struck the head of Jonsdottir and went into the back of the net, making it 3-0 for the visitors in the 53rd minute. Taylor Huff didn’t wait long to answer back, getting Bay FC on the board in the 56th minute, breaking the shutout and making it a 3-1 game.

Caroline Conti and Anouk Denton entered the game for Bay during the 65th minute, taking over for Brooklyn Courtnall and Alex Pfeiffer. Jordan Silkowitz went down for a considerable amount of time around the midway point of the second half. Backup goalkeeper Emmie Allen started to warm up, but ultimately Silkowitz got back to her feet and remained in the game.

Kelli Hubly entered the match for Joelle Anderson in the 78th minute. Taylor Huff picked up two yellow cards in stoppage time, which resulted in her being shown a red card.

Ultimately, Angel City would maintain their lead and walked away with a 3-1 victory over Bay FC. Bay will be back in action on Saturday, as they travel to North Carolina to take on the Courage in their first road game of the campaign.

Barracuda start game series with a 4-1 win over the Canucks

SAN JOSE- San Jose Barracuda waste no time jump on Abbottsford Canucks for a 4-1 win at Tech CU on Saturday night. Getting on the board first, Abbotsford’s Chase Stillman scored his third of the season to make it an early 1-0 lead in the first period.

On a turnover caused by Brendan Hoffman, San Jose tied the game at 1-1, just two minutes into the second period. Two minutes later, San Jose took their first lead of the game. Kasper Halttunen scored his thirteenth of the season from the faceoff dot to make it a 2-1 game.

To extend that lead, Anthony Vincent scored his ninth goal of the season (shorthanded), to make it a two goal lead, now a 3-1 game.

To extend that lead even further, Jimmy Huntington potted his15th of the season to make it a 4-1 Barracuda lead.

After the first period, San Jose outshot Abbotsford 15-10. After the second period, San Jose outshot Abbotsford fifteen to six. After the third period, San Jose outshot Abbotsford ten to eight.

Coming into Saturday night’s game, San Jose was second on the powerplay and fourth shorthanded. Saturday night, San Jose went 1/2. Abbotsford came in sixth on the powerplay and eighth shorthanded. Saturday night, Abbotsford went 0/3.

Gabriel Carriere got the start in his second consecutive game. Making 19 saves on 20 shots, Carriere recorded tonights win. For Abbotsford, Jiří Patera got the start. Making 36 saves on 40 shots, Patera recorded Saturday nights loss.

Flyers hand 4-1 loss to Sharks; Losing Streak grows to four for San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Playoff implications remain on the line for San Jose, and while the margin for error continues to shrink, the Sharks are not eliminated just yet.

The Sharks returned to SAP Center on Saturday afternoon to face the Philadelphia Flyers, looking to bounce back after a 5-0 loss to the surging Buffalo Sabres. With the postseason race tightening, every point carries added weight down the stretch.

A tightly contested first period saw both teams held scoreless, each registering six shots on goal. Goaltending stood out early, with timely saves and disciplined defensive play limiting quality chances. Philadelphia’s physicality, however, was evident, as the Flyers committed three penalties compared to San Jose’s two, setting the tone for a chippy matchup.

The second period brought a shift in momentum. Philadelphia broke the deadlock when Owen Tippett capitalized on a transition play, finishing a setup that originated from Trevor Zegras near the neutral zone. Tippett slipped past the defense and beat the goaltender to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

San Jose responded midway through the period on the power play. Dmitri Orlov found the back of the net at the 14-minute mark, converting a well-worked sequence assisted by William Eklund and Macklin Celebrini. The goal energized the Sharks and briefly leveled the contest at 1-1.

As the game progressed, the physical edge intensified, with both teams exchanging hits and engaging in post-whistle scrums, reflecting the stakes involved.

The third period, however, tilted decisively in favor of Philadelphia. The Flyers capitalized on defensive lapses, scoring three goals, including two empty-netters in the final minutes, to pull away and secure the win.

With the loss, San Jose extends its skid to four games, adding pressure as the regular season winds down. The Sharks will now head on the road for the final stretch of the month, beginning with a matchup in Nashville, where they will look to regroup and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Utah Mammoth game wrap: Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear In 4-1 Utah Home Loss To Anaheim

SALT LAKE CITY–The Utah Mammoth jumped out to an early lead before surrendering a pair to the Ducks in a hard fought contest which remained close until Anaheim scored a pair of empty net tallies with 96 seconds remaining in the third third for a 4-1 Ducks victory on Friday night.

The Mammoth (36-27-6) kicked off a four-game homestand on Friday night against the Pacific Division leading Ducks (37-27-4), a possible playoff opponent based on current standings. Utah returns from a successful two-game road trip where they defeated the Dallas Stars 6-3, and the Vegas Golden Knights 4-0, helping to solidify their grasp on the first Wild Card position in the Western Conference, six points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings who hold down the second Wild Card position.

The Mammoth are the only Wild Card candidate in the conference with a positive +/- goal differential on the season at +27, seventh best overall in the NHL. The Ducks are the only Top 3 team in the Western Conference divisions with a negative +/- goal differential at -11.

Earlier on Friday, forward Michael Carcone inked a two-year contract extension with the Mammoth valued at $3.5 million, with an annual cap hit of $1.75 million. Carcone, who expressed during his media availability following his exit interview at the conclusion of last season that he didn’t expect to return, ultimately ended up signing a one-year $775,000 deal in the offseason when he failed to land with another team.

The agreement turned out to benefit both sides as Carcone put in the work to turn things around this year, earning his $3.5 million pay day. Through 66 games this season he has scored 14 goals and 12 assists for 26 points, whereas last season he scored seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points in 55 games.

Absent from the Ducks lineup on Friday was captain Radko Gudas who is in the midst of a five-game suspension for kneeing Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews on March 12, 2026, effectively ending Matthews’s season.

At the Milan Olympics in February, Gudas was involved in a collusion with Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby which resulted in the future Hall of Famer missing his next 11 NHL contests. The Ducks defenseman is eligible to return to action next Wednesday against Vancouver. Another Ducks defenseman, Ian Moore, was born in Salt Lake City and made his first appearance at Delta Center, joining Trevor Lewis as the second Utah-born player to suit up for an NHL game in the state.

Missing from the Anaheim Ducks broadcast team was Steve Carroll, who has called Anaheim’s radio play-by-play for the past 27 seasons extending all the way back to when I still worked in the Ducks press box a quarter century ago. Earlier in the week, Steve announced his retirement at the end of the season, marking 50 years overall in sports broadcasting.

On a personal note, Steve is one of the finest men I have ever known in broadcasting and he will be sorely missed by Ducks fans. He is expected to call Anaheim’s final regular-season home game against the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday, April 12. Here’s wishing him, his wife, and family all the best in his retirement.

Mammoth sniper Dylan Guenther drew first blood at 1:48 of the opening frame with his team-leading 34th goal of the season, assisted by Sean Durzi and JJ Peterka. It was the fastest goal to start a game in Guenther’s career. He is fourth in the NHL in goals scored for players aged 22 and under, behind Wyatt Johnson of Dallas, Macklin Celebrini of San Jose, and Cutter Gauthier of Anaheim.

At 13:37, with Ducks forward Chris Kreider in the penalty box serving a too many men on the ice penalty, Ryan Poehling broke away with the puck to even the score with a slick wrist shot, shorthanded, to even the score at 1-1. Poehling’s 9th goal of the season was assisted by Alex Killorn and Pavel Mintyukov. Lukas Dostal turned away 13 of 14 Mammoth shots in the period while Vítek Vaněček stopped 4 of 5 Ducks shots on goal.

Anaheim took their first lead of the night at 9:09 of the second period when Alex Killorn took advantage of Vaněček being screened by Lawson Crouse to net his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Beckett Sennecke. The Mammoth took 3 penalties in the frame and the Ducks were whistled for one, but there was no further scoring as the Ducks went to the locker room with a 2-1 lead. Dostal was stopped a perfect 10 Mammoth shots in the period, while Vaněček turned away 9 of 10.

The third period remained tightly contested with neither team scoring until Cutter Gauthier registered his 36th of the year into an empty net at 18:24 to essentially put the game away. The Mammoth continued to fight back with Vaněček pulled for an extra attacker, but Mikael Granlund drove his 13th of the season into the empty net with 55 seconds remaining to send fans to the exits. With the 4-1 victory, Anaheim (38-27-4) maintains its first place lead in the Pacific Division by 3 points over the Edmonton Oilers and 4 points over the Vegas Golden Knights. Utah falls to 36-28-6 while maintaining a 6-point edge in the Western Conference Wild Card chase over the Los Angeles Kings.

“I think our push was great; we just didn’t finish,” said defenseman Mikhail Sergachev in the Mammoth locker room after the game. “We had a lot of chances, a couple of breakaways, a couple going against the goal in front of the net, and we didn’t finish. That was the difference in the game.”

“Solid effort, back to back, they had a good push, we had a good push, and we just got to bear down a little bit more on some plays,” said the lone goal-scorer Dylan Guenther. ““It was solid, and I thought the crowd was really good too. It is easier to play when they’re really loud, and it helps us a lot. So yeah, we knew it was an important game, and even though we didn’t get the win, I thought it was still a solid effort.”

Utah Mammoth Head Coach André Tourigny was proud of his team’s effort despite the final outcome. “Yeah, you can see the way we played in the third we generated a lot of offense,” Bear said. “We had great opportunities. We had momentum, we were aggressive and all of it. We were not on our heels, so really the only thing I don’t like is the scoreboard. The rest of it is tough to complain about. Proud of the guys, proud of their resilience, proud of their mental toughness. The six on five and the power play at the end, I would have loved to do something different. Other than that, there’s not much to complain about.”

The Mammoth homestand continues on Sunday as former Utah players Josh Doan and Michael Kesselring return with the Atlantic Division leading Buffalo Sabres for a 6:00pm tilt.

Santa Cruz Warriors podcast Michael Villanueva:

#1 Michael for the Santa Cruz Warriors Trey Galloway led in scoring with 15 points he was part of a effort in the second half that the Warriors tried to put together but fell short of catching the Rio Grande Vipers.

#2 Chance McMillan finished second in scoring with 17 points for the Warriors he got he looks but once again the Warriors fell short despite McMillan’s efforts.

#3 The Warriors had three players who finished with 12 points Marques Bolden, Taevion Kinsey, and Jordan Hall it was a battle for them but again frastrating.

#4 The Warriors didn’t get into foul trouble and they had a good run at trying to catch the Vipers but again couldn’t surpass them.

#5 This is the Warriors sixth loss in a row and this is a snake bitten team while their down to just nine players on the active roster.

Santa Cruz Warriors Fall to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, 108-99

SANTA CRUZ – Sea Dubs lost their first home game of the week, with still one more scheduled home game ahead this week on Saturday. The team lost against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Thursday, March 19th, at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Before this loss, Santa Cruz was already riding the wrong waves, as the team was on a 5-game losing streak prior. Going up against a team like the Vipers, which currently sits in 3rd place in the West, is a big challenge, with the team having just three more home games left. So, this wasn’t the result the Warriors were expecting in their home, with the final score being 108-99.

The Vipers’ last five games were 3-2, with their most recent game on March 17th being a loss to the Texas Legends, 108-104. Sea Dubs are holding a solid home record at 7-7. While the Vipers’ record on the road hasn’t been what the team wanted, 6-9. The NBA G League season is reaching its last five to six games of the season. Vipers are trying to hold 3rd place since the playoffs hold the top six teams in each conference. While the Sea Dubs are trying to keep swimming and fighting to get into the sixth spots, they’re currently in tenth place in the West.

The Sea Dubs started with guards Chance McMillian, Taevion Kinsey, forwards Jack Clark, Jacksen Moni, and center Marques Brown. Guard Chance McMillian is averaging 16.58 points per game and was hoping to carry the Sea Dubs to a win. Especially since Santa Cruz is 6-4 against the Vipers in the last 10 games played against each other.

Vipers sent out guards John Knight III, Daishen Nix, forwards Tristen Newton (2W), Cameron Matthews, and center Chase Jeter. Rio Grande is 2 games behind 1st place, South Bay Lakers, so any win count and helps at this point for them.

Right at tip-off, both teams were able to knock down three-pointers that got the fans in Kaiser loud and on their feet. However, it would be the Sea Dubs taking the early lead in the game due to them being more disciple and smart on their shot selection. Especially since they were shooting above 50% early in the game in all of their categories. While the Vipers were a little distraught at first, being on the road. Halfway through the 1st quarter, the Sea Dubs would hold a 7-point lead, 20-13.

Santa Cruz hustle was showing as they were leading in rebounds with 14 compared to Rio Grande’s 8 rebounds. Also, the Sea Dubs’ defense was on display as they had 4 blocks in the 1st. However, the Vipers would hit three three-pointers, which was able to put them back in the game. So with that, the Warriors and Vipers were tied, 26-26.

2nd quarter, the Warriors would become sloppy and careless with the ball at times. They already have 5 turnovers halfway through the 2nd quarter. Giving a helping hand to the Vipers as they were down by 1 point, 35-34, with 6 minutes left. Warriors forward Jacksen Moni would go on a solo 5-0 scoring run that sparked a scoring sequence for both teams. Also, with 4 minutes and thirty seconds left, the Vipers would take the lead by 1 point and push it to 3 points with an easy lay-up. A silent killer for the Warriors is their turnovers, with them having 8 versus Viper’s 1.

At halftime, the Vipers would lead the Sea Dubs, 56-42. A big scoring outbreak for the Vipers is going on, with a 14-5 scoring run to help extend their lead. With help on the Warriors’ end, due to them now having 14 turnovers. Rio Grande was able to get easy transition buckets and turnover points. The Warriors’ three-point shooting also wasn’t on their side. They were shotting 15.8%, going 3-of-19 on their attempts. The Warriors plan to come back from half more disciplined and determined to secure a home win this Thursday evening.

Vipers came out of the half ready to play and ultimately get the win. They would push their lead to one of the biggest in the night at 18 points. Vipers’ shooting and scoring was in well displayed as they pushed to find their inside man in the paint to get an easy bucket. With that, the Vipers would go on and score 40 of their points down there. So halfway through the 3rd quarter, the Warriors were down 14 points to the Vipers, 74-60.

After almost being down by 22 points in the final minutes of the 3rd quarter. The Warriors were able to still show some fight left in them. They would be able to drop the lead to 10 points entering the last quarter of the game. The Warriors’ turnovers would go to 17 in the game. So if Santa Cruz wants to get this win in their home, they’ll have to play smart in the final minutes.

The Warriors would open the fourth quarter by making their first two shot attempts. Then followed up by a big three-pointer by guard Chance McMillian to cut the lead by 5 points. A lot of back and fourth shots were taking place as both teams were trying all of their efforts to get this win. The Vipers’ defense showed out as they were able to pick up some crucial steals. The team would finish with 12 steals over the Warriors’ 4 steals.

In the final 2 minutes of play, the Warriors were down by 9 points, 104-95. Santa Cruz was really beating themselves as turnovers were, and they’re not making shots was the reason they were never able to regain the lead. Although it was impressive to see them almost come back from 22 points, especially in the 3rd quarter. Vipers would win the first one this week, 108-99. The Warriors were led by guard Chance McMillian with 17 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds.

Santa Cruz Warriors will come back to their home on Saturday, March 21st, to play once again, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The game time for that one will be at 7 p.m. on NBCSBA+. The Sea Dubs are now on a 6-game losing streak, so with their rematch against the Vipers. They look to get at least a win for their home crowd this week and snap that streak.
