Death, taxes and the San Francisco 49ers dominating the Los Angeles Rams.

The combination of Deebo Samuel and a relentless defensive effort allowed the Niners to cruise to a 24-9 victory over their NFC Western Division rival on Monday evening at Levi’s Stadium. San Francisco is 7-0 in its last seven regular season against Los Angeles.

For the second time in three games, San Francisco’s stout defense did not allow an offensive touchdown. This time it was the high powered offense that is the Rams. The defenese did not allow a play over 20 yards as they dominated the trenches and made Los Angeles’ offense one dimensional for 60 minutes.

“We knew it would be a battle to keep them (Rams) out of the end zone, it was great. Our special teams played well. It was really cool to see cause I thought we had a chance to run away with it. So it was cool to not play perfect, but to overcome a lot of things and have a big victory,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said.

Los Angeles (2-2) opened the game with a methodical 14 play 54-yard drive with a series of short passes, screens and check downs over the middle that resulted in a Matt Gay 39-yard field goal. The drive chewed up over eight minutes on the clock.

San Francisco (2-2) answered back on its first offensive possession. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo led the 49ers down the field on a eight play 75 yard drive where he completed four of his five passes for 45 yards. Running back Jeff Wilson Jr. finished off the drive when he run untouched for a 32-yard rushing touchdown.

After another Gay field goal, San Francisco extended its lead with under three minutes left in the second quarter. On a third and three at their own 43 yard line, Garoppolo fired a high ball just beyond the outstretched reach of Derion Kendrick into the hands of Samuel. The hybrid wide receiver turned a short catch into a 57-yard highlight reel touchdown reception as he broke two tackles and juked out another would be tackler in the process on his way to the end zone for a 14-6 lead.

“Every time I get the ball in my hands it’s my mentality in trying to make a big play, but it’s just second nature to me right now,” said Samuel.

Samuel had his best game as a wide receiver of the season. He led the 49ers in receiving with six catches for 115 yards and one touchdown.

Los Angeles tried to change the momentum to start the second half when they forced the a three and out on San Francisco’s first drive to start the third quarter. Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford once again led a long drive down the field and once again the 49ers defense kept the Rams out of the end zone as Gay kicked his third field goal, a 26 yarder, to complete a 16 play 75 yard drive that ate 7:43 off the clock.

“The story of the night on the offensive side of the ball was self inflicted wounds, above the neck errors where we’re not doing the things that we’re capable of and I expect us to be better than that,” said Rams head coach Sean McVay.

San Francisco’s defense sealed the deal late in the fourth quarter with a game clinching pick six. Talanoa Hufanga read a wide receiver screen intended for star wide receiver Cooper Kupp and intercepted Stafford, returning the ball 52 yards to pay dirt. It was Hufanga’s team leading second interception as he has become a clutch player on this already talented 49ers defense in his sophomore season.

“They’ve been running screens all night. I kinda saw a different release than I’m used to. Instead of following my man, I just turned my head and the ball kinda just dropped in my face. I ain’t gonna lie. I thought (Matthew) Stafford was going to catch me,” Hufanga said.

San Francisco’s defense sacked Stafford seven times with Nick Bosa and Samson Ekubam both had two apiece. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw had an impressive game with 12 solo tackles, including one for a loss.

Garoppolo, who is now 7-0 against the Rams, finished 16 of 27 for 237 yards with one touchdown, no interceptions and a QB rating of 100.7. Wilson Jr. had a productive game with 74 yards on 18 carries.

“We’ve had some dog fights against these guys,” Garoppolo said when asked about the team’s success against the Rams. “That’s a good football team, give them credit. That’s a hellava D-line and our guys stood up to them and I thought they played really well.”

Kupp, who was the only offensive bright spot for the Rams, rewarded his fantasy football owners as he led all receivers with 14 catches for 122 yards. Stafford, who is 1-6 in his career against the 49ers, finished 32 of 48 for 254 yards with no touchdowns and the pick six.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 5-for-12 on third down conversions. Los Angeles was 5-for-15.

DT Javon Kinlaw (knee) WR Danny Gray (hip) S Tarvarius Moore (hamstring) LT Trent Williams (ankle) RB Ty Davis-Price (ankle) TE Tyler Kroft (knee) OL Nick Zakelj (coach’s decision) were inactive for San Francisco.

UP NEXT: San Francisco take on the Carolina Panthers on Sunday 10/9 at 1:05pm at Bank of America Stadium.

Giants end 2022 home season with 10 inning win over Diamondbacks 4-3

Arizona (73-86) 3 13 0

San Francisco (80-79) 4 6 1 10 innings

Sunday, October 2, 2022

San Francisco Giants David Villar (middle) gets congratulated by teammates JD Davis (7) and Mike Yastrzemski (5) after getting a tenth inning walk off two RBI single against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Sun Oct 2, 2022 (@SFGiants photo)

By Lewis Rubman

At first, it was a novelty. Then it was a rarity. Now, for the second day in a row, the Giants played a bullpen game. Yesterday’s wasn’t successful, although opener Scott Alexander handled his five man chore perfectly. It was nominal reliever Jakob Junis and bullpen denizen Jarlín García who opened the floodgates to enable the Diamondbacks deathly offense.

For today, the Giants again chose Alexander to open. Being eliminated from the playoffs means you play spring training games in the fall, so there was nothing to do but relax and enjoy the show.

And what a show it was! The Giants ended up on top of a 4-3 thriller in which they were they got less than half the amount of hit as the visiting snakes. Alexander got through his inning scorelessly but not before giving up a pair of singles. Thomas Szapucki ran into a spot of trouble in the third, but he kept Arizona off the board in his two frames on the mound.

Alex Young followed him in the fourth with another shutout frame in the fourth but faltered in the fifth, yielding a pair of two out doubles to Carston Kelly and Jake McCarthy that allowed the Diamondbacks to score their first run. The always exciting and recently more effective submariner Tyler Rogers came in at that point and got Christian Walker to fly out to end the threat.

Rogers allowed a leadoff double to Josh Rojas in the sixth, but The Curse of the Leadoff Double and a pitcher’s best friend allowed him to escape the consequences of that blow and Corbin Carroll’s infield single. Shelby Miller pitched a perfect seventh in his third big league appearance.

Arizona sent Zach Davies (2-5, 4.18 at game time) to the mound as their starter. The Giants jumped on him for a quick lead in the top of the first. With one out, Wilmer Flores and JD Davis walked, and Joc Pederson’s sharp line drive single to center loaded the bases.

Evan Longoria’s sac fly to left brought Flores home. Brandon Crawford drew a base on balls to clog the base paths with Giants. Then, for some reason, maybe because he’s pretty speedy, Thairo Estrada bunted for a base hit. His speed turned out to be irrelevant; Estrada popped out to the mound.

Davis left the game, trailing 1-0 after five, but escaped with a no decision. He threw 91 pitches, 40 of which were balls. The run he allowed was earned, and he also yielded two hits and five walks. He struck out three and brought his ERA down to 4.09.

Lefty Caleb Smith took over for Davis and pitched a perfect sixth, but Austin Slater, pinch hitting for LaMonte Wade, Jr., led off the seventh, leaning into a 90mph four seamer to send it flying 395 feet into the left center field seats and put San Francisco ahead 2-1.

That advantage was short lived. The oft used John Brebbia started the eighth episode for the hosts, and the visitors put good wood on his offerings. Their most telling blows were McCarthy’s lead off single to right and Rojas’s one out line drive double to right that drove him in with the tying tally. Brebbia escaped unscathed after that, and Camilo Doval threw a perfect ninth.

Kevin Ginkel took care of the Giants with no trouble in the eighth, and Marc Melançon did the same to his erstwhile teammates in the ninth.

The teams went into extras with Jharel Cotton on the mound for San Francisco and Daulton Varsho on second base for the club from Phoenix. Carlson Kelly made an inexplicable bunt attempt that didn’t even advance Varsho, who scored when the next batter, McCarthy singled him home with a line drive to right.

Christian Walker hit a single to third that hit Longoria’s hand, but the veteran third sacker stayed in the game. Things looked bleak for the orange and black when the D’back runners pulled off a double steal. But Cotton buckled down and struck out Rojas and retired Pavin Smith on a fly to center. The inning was over, but Arizona now led 3-2.

They sent Taylor Widener to the mound in the Giants’ half of the tenth. Yaz was the zombie runner. Flores walked. JD Davis filled the bases with an infield single. David Villar ended the suspense (and the Giants’ home season) with a first pitch ground ball single to left.

Cotton got the win. He’s now 4-2, 2.76. Widener took the loss. His record now stands at 0-1, 5.11.

The Giants will play out the string in San Diego. Tomorrow’s game will start at 6:40. Joe Musgrove (10-7, 3.03) will be on the hump for the Padres. The San Francisco brain trust hasn’t yet announced their starter (or opener, as the case may be)

Salinas goes out a hero in final home match of his career in Earthquakes 2-0 shutout win over Minnesota United

Shea Salinas being celebrated by his teammates after his final home match, a 2-0 win over Minnesota FC, at Pay Pal Park in San Jose on Saturday Oct 1, 2022. (San Jose Earthquakes)

by Marko Ukalovic

It was a swan sung to remember for Shea Salinas.

The San Jose Earthquakes veteran midfielder, who played in his final home match of his storied career, scored the game winning goal in a 2-0 shutout victory over the Minnesota United on Saturday evening in the home season finale at Pay Pal Park.

Salinas, who announced his retirement from the game this past Wednesday, was given the start in the midfield by interim head coach Alex Covelo in his final home match of his career.

He made the most of his 63 minutes on the pitch with the goal on two shots. The Man of the Match received a standing ovation from the ‘Quakes faithful on hand that witnessed the final time he donned the home jersey. Covelo substituted in forward Benji Kikanovic in the 64th minute.

Salinas’ goal came in the 52nd minute off a free kick just inside the D. His shot deflected off the leg off Emmanuel Reynoso and past United goalkeeper David St. Clair for his first goal of the season. It was the 22nd goal of his 15-year career in his 375th MLS appearance.

Salinas set up his own goal two minutes earlier when he intercepted a pass at midfield and raced down the middle of the pitch only to be tripped up by Michael Boxall before making a shot attempt on net.

“Tonight was special, (it fees) still kind of surreal, the whole thing,” Salinas said after the match. “It doesn’t feel like the last game (at home). I felt good out there but (I’m) also excited for the future. I thought it was a good way to end it, it was fun.”

San Jose won just their eight match of the season with one left go before they wrap it up for 2022. It was big blow to Minnesota’s playoff hopes as they weren’t able to gain any ground as they stood stuck with 45 points, one point ahead of Real Salt Lake for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They are 0-5-1 in their last six matches.

“For me, to coach Shea (Salinas) is a pleasure. I’ve known him since I came here in 2017. He always has been a role model on and off the field. I was on the bench in 2017 when Shea scored the second goal and gave us the victory that day at Stanford. It has been a pleasure,” Covelo said.

Kikanovic gave San Jose (8-15-10) an insurance goal in the 71st minute. Jeremy Ebobisee chipped a ball over Kikanovic out to the middle and he dribbled out the right wing before depositing the ball into the lower left corner for his sixth goal of the season.

Minnesota United (13-14-6) came out flat with hardly any desperation setting up a winner take all scenario heading into Decision Day next Sunday against Vancouver in a race that has five teams separated by only four points.

The best scoring chance for the visiting team came in the 48th minute when a shot from the left wing by Reynoso was knocked away by ‘Quakes goalkeeper JTMarcinkowski and out of danger.

Marcinkowsi finished the match stopping the two shots on target to earn his fourth clean sheet of the season. St. Clair made four saves on six shots on target in the losing effort.

In the end it was a scripted ending perfect for Salinas that everyone had hoped for but no one expected.

Salinas said to closed out by saying “It was pretty funny. They were huddled up, talking about some plan, and I was jokingly over their shoulder like, ‘Hey guys, I’m just going to shoot it,’ and I walked away. But they were like, ‘No, seriously, that’s fine. Shoot it.’ I haven’t taken a direct free kick my entire career.  I think God had this all planned out and I got to celebrate.”

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished with seven corner kicks. Minnesota had six.

San Jose is now 5-4-2 all-time vs. Minnesota United FC, including a 3-2-1 record at PayPal Park.

The Earthquakes are now 8-11-7 in MLS play under Covelo.

Minnesota United had it seven match unbeaten streak snapped as they were 5-0-2 previously against San Jose

San Jose has scored 29 goals in the second half this season.

Salinas still holds the club record with 50 assists.

UP NEXT: San Jose closes out the regular season against the Seattle Sounders on Sunday 10/9 at 2:00pm at Lumen Field.
