Stanford Cardinal football podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Cardinal have lost 4 of their last 7 games, need this one bad against Arizona

On the Stanford Cardinal football podcast with Jerry Feitelberg:

#1 Lots to work on for Stanford Cardinal head coach David Shaw and the Cardinal as they come off last Thursday’s loss to the UCLA Bruins at home 34-16.

#2 Lots to talk about for Shaw and the Cardinal and quarterback David West, who threw against the Bruins as the Cardinal third string quarterback, going 15-32 for 143 yards and no touchdowns. West and the offense will have a huge order in improving the offense in Arizona at Stanford Stadium this Saturday.

#3 A total of 16 Cardinal have made their first career starts which included West, with a great percentage of the players being that young and inexperienced the task of getting each of them ready. Saturday has proved challenging, but the Cardinal have won three games this season proving that once in gear Shaw can get his younger players ready.

#4 The Bruins — in the first quarter — got two touchdowns and spread out the rest of their scoring throughout the game for the 18-point win. Stopping the run early will probably be one of Stanford’s biggest goals this Saturday against Arizona.

#5 The Wildcats are coming to Stanford with a two-game losing streak and got crushed in their last two games by Washington and USC. Are the Wildcats a down team are a mad animal backed in a corner coming in this Saturday?

Headline Sports podcast with Barbara Mason: 49ers get just enough done to beat Washington; Raiders will have to turn the page after getting crushed by the Pack; plus more

On Headline Sports with Barbara:

#1 The San Francisco 49ers kept their perfect record in tact shutting out Washington on Sunday 9-0. It was, messy, muddy, sloppy, and kicker Robby Gould did all the heavy lifting kicking three field goals for all the scoring.

#2 The Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rogers threw all day on Sunday against the visiting Oakland Raiders resulting in a 42-24 laugher for the Pack. The Packers ran through the Raiders defense like butter as Rogers passed for five touchdowns.

#3 The 2019 World Series is underway tonight at Minute Maid Field in Houston between the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros. Both teams come into the series with potent pitching staffs, which proved their success in getting to the World Series.

#4 The Cal Bears (4-3) suffered their third loss dropping to 4-3 in a game they were supposed to win against Oregon State (3-4) 21-17 in Berkeley. The Bears couldn’t get any offense going in the first half.

#5 Quarterback problems live at Stanford University as the Cardinal (3-4) are now on their third quarterback. K.J. Costell and David Mills are both out with injuries and third string quarterback Jack West worked under center last Thursday night, but couldn’t get enough yards, rushing or passing done in the 34-16 loss to the UCLA Bruins (2-5).

Stanford Cardinal Football podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: UCLA comes calling tonight at Stanford Stadium on Pac-12 Thursday Night Football

On the Stanford Football podcast with Jerry Feitelberg:

#1  Despite losing 10 key contributors from its two-deep depth chart and having five players out of the lineup, Stanford Cardinal (3-3) head coach David Shaw has taken his team and developed them into winning ways such as the way they were able to defeat the Washington Huskies (4-2), 23-13.

#2 Jerry talks about Stanford quarterback David Mills, who went 21-30 for 293 yards, and one touchdown.

#3 There was very doubt that coach Shaw and the Cardinal, who were 16.5 points underdogs against the Washington Huskies in the October 5th game, could pull this one off, but the defense was certainly key as the Cardinal won by ten points.

#4 Stanford head coach David Shaw and UCLA head coach Chip Kelly will meet tonight at Stanford Stadium. It’ll be like old times and Shaw hopes to pull off another win at Stanford Stadium.

#5 How does Stanford quarterback David Mills stack up going against the Bruins defense and Chip Kelly’s game plan?

Larry and Elaine Spalding donate $500K to Spartan Athletics Center

By Ana Kieu

SAN JOSE–San Jose State University recently announced that it has received a $500,000 gift commitment from Larry and Elaine Sparling. This gift will support the Spartan Athletics Center, the future home of San Jose State football and men’s and women’s soccer.

“Larry and Elaine Sparling believe in the direction of this Athletics program and understand the importance of the Spartan Athletics Center,” said Marie Tuite, San Jose State’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “I spend quite a bit of time with this wonderful couple and I can tell you they support the efforts of our coaches and student-athletes. They are so positive and encouraging when it comes to the important work our coaches are doing. They are terrific Spartans and we are so thankful and appreciative of their generous gift.”

The Spartan Athletics Center will include new locker rooms, an auditorium, coaches’ offices, position-specific classrooms, stadium game day suites, and a state-of-the-art athletic training room that will be accessible to all student-athletes.

ABOUT THE SPARLINGS
Though the Sparlings didn’t graduate from San Jose State, they’re longtime supporters of Spartan football. Over the years, they’ve driven their RV all over the U.S. to watch the football team compete. The Sparlings are leadership donors to the Spartan Athletics Fund and attend many Spartan sporting events. They believe that by supporting San Jose State, they’re investing in their community and helping their neighbors and friends succeed.

“I love the fact that at San Jose State we can be so connected to everybody, from the coaching staff to the athletic director and the university president,” said Larry. “We know how crucial the Spartan Athletics Center is for all the athletes at San Jose State. I like donating to student-athletes because we can tell how much it means to them to play their sport and get a degree from a great college.”

In 1966, the Sparling family took over Tiny Tots, a cotton diaper home pick-up and delivery service based in Campbell, California. At that time, they had only 80 customers, two Kenmore washer-dryers, and a delivery vehicle. However, the couple helped grow the business before Larry’s sister and brother-in-law took the reins. Over the past 50 years, Tiny Tots has laundered more than 680 million diapers. Tiny Tots has offered free Diapering 101 classes to members of the community since 1980, as well as monthly support groups, workshops, and CPR trainings. Larry went on to found Healthcare Laundry Services.

“This gift from Larry and Elaine Sparling is a tremendous support to the university and our athletics program,” said Interim Vice President of University Advancement and CEO of the Tower Foundation Peter Smits. “By investing in the Spartan Athletics Center, they are establishing a legacy that will help countless generations of Spartan student-athletes. We thank them for their contribution to San Jose State.”

“The Sparlings have always been very dedicated supporters of SJSU Athletics,” said SJSU Football Head Coach Brent Brennan. “This gift will make a huge difference to our football program, as well as Spartan soccer and all of athletics. Thank you, Larry and Elaine!”

Cal Bears Football podcast with Morris Phillips: Golden Bears look to rebound on OSU after loss in Oregon

photo from calbears.com: The Cal Bears Deandae Johnson sacks Oregon QB Justin Herbert in the October 5th

On the Cal Bears (4-2) Football podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris, Cal head coach Justin Wilcox reflected on the tough loss in their last game October 5th at Oregon (4-1) saying “It’s not one person, the way we meet, the extra work they do” referring to the work ethic of the team was that element lacking referring to the loss to the Ducks on the 5th?

#2 Morris, talk about Cal’s defensive backfield: Ashtyn Davis, Jaylinn Hawkins, Trey Turner III, Treyvon Beck, Josh Drayden, Camryn Bynum, and Elijah Hicks. How much of a percentage you would put on the game in Oregon that defense was there or not there?

#3 How much pressure will be on David Modster to get it done this coming Saturday. He just wasn’t able to get some of the passes he wanted in Oregon last game.

#4  Modster will get a chance to throw against Oregon State (2-4). Oregon State had their heads handed to them in their last game by the Utah Utes (5-1) 52-7 nearly getting shutout. Could Modster have a game like that throwing for scores all day?

#5 Lastly, talk about coach Wilcox’s game plan the Bears need a lot more offense than they got in Oregon and how sore is the wounded Golden Bear that wants to come out with a vengeance on Saturday?

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: College athletes to get paid in 2023 in California, other states to follow

On the Stanford podcast with Jerry Feitelberg:

#1 At the Pac-12 media day on Tuesday, all the talk was about college athletes getting paid for their names and likenesses.

#2 California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the law for college athletes to get paid for their likeness and California will be joined by other states.

#3 Stanford men’s basketball head coach Jerod Haase said the priority is about the student-athlete and that the ramifications will be interesting.

#4 College coaches poll shows Stanford basketball in 10th place out of 12 colleges. Haase would like to improve on that.

#5 The Cardinal football team got a huge win last Saturday vs. Washington. They head to UCLA on Thursday, October 17th.

Cal football podcast with Morris Phillips: Modster looking to regroup against OSU

bearinsider.com photo: Cal Bears defensive back Jaylinn Hawkins (6) and defensive back Erik Harutyunyan (26) got some joy before Oregon put the kibosh on the Bears happiness with a 17-7 win at Oregon on Saturday.

On the Cal football podcast with Morris Phillips:

#1 Another tough loss for Cal quarterback David Modster, who threw two picks. How much did the turnover play a role in the lack of offense against Oregon?

#2 How tough of a role was it for Modster to step into throwing 17-34, 190 yards and one touchdown.

#3 Knowing head coach Justin Wilcox, he really wanted to set up some kind of rally down 10 points to get back into this game. How uphill was his game plan to execute?

#4 Oregon is noted for its tough defense and they succeeded with holding Cal to just a touchdown. Talk about how the Ducks were able to stop the run?

#5 Oregon State comes to Cal Saturday Oct 19th. There’s no doubt that Modster wants to avoid the interception and get the scoring up. How much of a workload does he have this Saturday?
