Timbers cut down Quakes with late goal in 1-0 victory

By Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE–If the San Jose Earthquakes (1-5-2) didn’t have bad luck, they wouldn’t have any luck at all. Diego Valeri scored the game-winning (and only) goal for the Portland Timbers (3-3-2) in the 88th minute to propel Portland to a 1-0 victory on Saturday evening at Avaya Stadium.  It was the third loss in a row for San Jose, whose winless streak extended to seven games.

Valeri, the Argentinian forward, received a free kick was he was fouled by a Quakes defender on a controversial platy during an on-coming rush. He didn’t waste his chance as he buried the ball into the upper right corner of the goal for the game-winner.

Both teams traded chances early in the game with Timbers forward Fanendo Adi sent in a shot from the top of the D that hit off the right corner of the post in the eighth minute. Quakes forward Danny Hoesen, who received a nice feed from Vako from just outside the D, had his shot on goal stopped by Timbers goalie Jeff Attinella just a minute later.

“It’s definitely frustrating to not get a victory after so long”, said defenseman Shea Salinas on his team’s seven-game winless streak. “So we gotta look at the things we’re doing well and be more consistent with it.”

The Timbers controlled play between the 18th minute and 23rd minutes with Sebastian Blanco shot from 30 yards away was easily handled by Quakes goalie Andrew Tarbell in the 18th minute. Larrys Mabiala header attempt sailed high over the goal from a set piece in the 22nd minute. Adi sent a shot wide a minute later as Portland created  sustained pressure in the Quakes defensive zone.

The Quakes would then tilt the pitch in their favor the next five minutes when Magnus Eriksson led a rush that ended in Nick Lima blasting a shot from the right corner that sailed off the top of the crossbar in the 25th minute.

The best chance for San Jose came when Mabiala tripped up Vako just outside the D box in the 29th minute. His free kick just trickled wide of the goal that beat Attinella to the right side.

The Quakes would keep the pressure on three minutes later when a shot from Hoesen ricochet off a Timbers defender on to the foot of Vako. His shot was stopped by a diving Attinella in the 32nd minute.

Portland would respond with two late chances right before halftime. Cristhian Paredes’ shot in the 44th minute from 20 yards out was turned away by Tarbell. Adi then took a centering feed and his chip shot sailed wide in the 45 minute.

San Jose would control the tempo in the second half. Hoesen took a centering pass into the goal box and his header attempt was saved by Attinella. The chance came off a free kick which was a result of a yellow card issued to Diego Chara in the 53rd minute.

Hoesen then sent cross pass into Wondolowski in the 56th minute but Wondolowski’s chip shot went wide.

Christopher Wehan, who made his MLS debut in the 71st minute, sent in a shot pass from 20 yards out that deflected off Quincy Amarikwa’s foot out of play in the 76th minute.

The Quakes made a late push in the final ten minutes of the game with chances before Valeri’s goal, including a couple of chances in stoppage time but could never get the ball into the back of the net.

“I’m super disappointed from the result perspective”, said head coach Mikael Stahre. “The only thing we can do is move forward, analyze, practice harder, and hopefully we can get a victory soon.”

GAME NOTES: Scratches for Quakes- M – Tommy Thompson (illness); D – Yeferson Quintana (ankle), M – Eric Calvillo (knee) For Timber- D – Roy Miller (left Achilles tendon), F – Jeremy Ebobisse (right thigh); D – Vytas (right thigh), D – Bill Tuiloma (right knee), M – David Guzman (right knee)

San Jose Earthquakes legend, and current color commentator, Chris Dangerfield was elected into the Quakes Hall of Fame during a ceremony at halftime.

Hoesen has three goals, including the team leader with three this season, in this last eight appearances for the Earthquakes. He had eight in his first 31 games with the team.

Paredes was issued a yellow card in one minute into stoppage time in the 1st half. Anibal Godoy was issued a yellow card in the 69th minute after a tackle on Chara.

Wehan came in on a substitution for Wondolowski.

The last time the Earthquakes have gone seven consecutive MLS games without a win was Aug. 19-Sept. 28, 2016.

The Timbers won their first MLS road game since a 1-0 victory on Sept. 9, 2017 at New York City FC. Including the postseason, they are now 1-5-3 and have been outscored 16-9 since then.

Portland leads the overall series 9-4-7 against San Jose. The Quakes are 4-2-4 at home against the Timbers.

The announced attendance was 17,850.

UP NEXT: The Quakes are back on the road as they travel to Minneapolis to take on Minnesota United FC on Saturday, May 12 at 11 am PT at TCF Bank Stadium.

Earthquakes fall 2-1 against Columbus Crew SC

By: Ana Kieu

The San Jose Earthquakes concluded their brief, two-game road trip with a stop at the Columbus Crew Stadium to take on–you guessed it–the Columbus Crew SC Saturday night.

Two years ago, Quakes goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell made his MLS debut with the Crew in Columbus, Ohio. Now, the 24-year-old is back in Columbus, but as a member of the Blue and Black.

As things fell into place, the whistle blew and both teams were ready for the much-anticipated match. Quakes captain Chris Wondolowski reached another milestone of 300 MLS appearances. Congratulations to Wondo!

The Quakes made an early substitution in the match, swapping Yeferson Quintana for Francois Affolter at the eighth minute of the first half.

The Quakes dodged a bullet when Harold Cummings made a big-time tackle in the box to prevent the Crew from a scoring opportunity at the 14th minute.

However, Columbus responded with the match’s first goal for a 1-0 lead at the 28th minute. Harrison Afful put the home team on the board with a super strike on Superhero Night.

San Jose tied the game at one apiece at the 45th minute, thanks to Florian Jungwirth’s flawless pass to Danny Hoesen, who kicked the ball into the Columbus net for a 2-0 lead.

Both teams were tied at one apiece at halftime.

However, San Jose was unable to stay hot in the second half. Magnus Eriksson scored what appeared to be a goal, but his kick went just wide of the Columbus net. No goal.

The Quakes made their second substitution of the match, replacing Wondo in favor of Quincy Amarikwa at the 70th minute.

But the Crew continued to do some damage late in the second half. Mike Grella saved the day for the home team as he kicked in his first ever goal in Columbus at the 83rd minute.

As you may have already heard, stoppage time in the MLS is often home-cooked, which was the case for this match. San Jose was so close as Valeri Qazaishvili danced around a crew of Columbus defenders, but he put it wide. No goal.

The Quakes lost to the Crew 2-1 in full time.

Earthquakes’ comeback effort falls short as they lose 3-2 to the Lions

The San Jose Earthquakes were back in action with a cross-country match against the Orlando City SC at Orlando City Stadium Saturday.

The Quakes players sported jerseys made of 100% recycled materials, courtesy of the MLS and Parley, in support of the annual Greener Goals week as Earth Day is just around the corner.

The Quakes were off in Orlando, but the Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at the second minute. Christopher Mueller streaked down the right side and put one past Andrew Tarbell for the fastest goal in Lions’ history.

Following the Lions’ early surge, the Quakes casted stronger spells of possession and attack. Tarbell made a tremendous save at the 12th minute, but Orlando City interrupted San Jose’s defense with a goal from Sacha Kljestan, who finished an unselfish assist from Mueller, for a 2-0 lead at the 35th minute.

The Quakes trailed the Lions 2-0 at the end of the first half.

The Quakes were back for the second half. San Jose made it a one-goal game, but they fell just short of what could’ve been a possible win over Orlando in front of a sold-out crowd of 25,527 in attendance.

Justin Meram kicked the ball to Dom Dwyer, who completed an onside kick for a 3-0 lead at the 70th minute.

Florian Jungwirth scored a goal to help the Quakes avoid a shutout at the 78th minute.

San Jose made their final change of the evening as they took out Danny Hoesen in favor of Quincy Amarikwa at the 82nd minute. The change occurred just minutes after Orlando City pulled Mueller for Josue Colman.

Once again, Tarbell made a high-caliber save to keep the score a one-goal game as the clock winded down to four minutes of stoppage time following regulation. Then, Jungwirth notched his second goal of the game, pulling the Quakes within one at the 90th minute.

Josue also constructed a salivating cross at the 90th minute. Nobody was at the end of it, which was a good thing for the Lions.

The Lions picked up their fourth straight win with a 3-2 victory over the Quakes.

Earthquakes get late equalizer goal to draw with Dynamo 2-2

By Marko Ukalovic and Alexandra Evans

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Earthquakes (1-2-2) and Houston Dynamo (1-2-2) came into their game with the same record and desperate for a win. They ended the night still with the same record when they played to a 2-2 draw on Saturday evening at Avaya Stadium.

Houston had a scoring chance at the eight-minute mark, when Andrew Wenger received a pass from Romell Quioto, but missed the net by just a few feet. Then San Jose’s captain, Anibal Godoy, came close to the net within the 13-minute mark before the ball was cleared by Houston’s defense.

Magnus Eriksson broke the silence with a beautiful goal in the 25th minute, assisted by Jackson Yueill. Yueill was able to cross the ball into the middle of the box where Eriksson shot the ball past Dynamo goalie Chris Seitz.

Danny Hoesen came close to doubling the lead three minutes later, but was once again cleared by the Dynamo defenders. Tarbell made an excellent save off of Tomas Martinez at the 33rd minute, and Vako Qazaishvili attempted a shot for the Quakes within the 35th minute, but was blocked by Alejandro Fuenmayor.

Hoesen had two wide open scoring opportunities at the 42nd minute, both of which were stopped at the very last second by Seitz. Vako had a scoring chance at the 45th minute which went wide of net.

“Obviously I want to be in good spots and score,” said Hoesen about his team not capitalizing on their chances in the first half. “I’ve learned you gotta keep making the runs. So I gotta keep making my runs. We were off a little bit tonight. Hopefully next game it will be better.”

The Dynamo took control of play immediately in the second half. Martinez got the equalizer goal in the 48th minute off of a rebound and his shot deflected off a Quakes defender foot and into the net.

They would take the lead in the 68th minute when Alberth Elis made a nice centering pass from the right corner over to Mauro Manotas who one-timed the ball while crashing into the net to give Houston a 2-1 lead.

“We were aware of Elis’s strong play,” said head coach Mikael Stahre. “He’s big and fast. We were in big trouble at the point (of the game).”

The Quakes would get their own equalizer in the 85th minute when substitute Quincy Amerikwa’s shot was blocked by a Dynamo defender. Jahmir Hyka, who substituted in at the 67th minute, possessed the ball, dribbled in and used a Dynamo defender as a screen to shoot the ball past Seitz who never had any vision of the shot.

“It was an important goal for us for sure,” said Stahre about Hyka’s performance. “He replaced Vako. He came in with energy and quality. So I’m happy with him that’s for sure.”

Quakes goalie Andrew Tarbell for the second consecutive week tied his career mark with making seven saves in a game. He did it last week against the Philadelphia Union.

GAME NOTES: This marked the first time in 56 games that Chris Wondolowski did not start for the Quakes. He came in as a substitute for Fatai Alashe in the 66th minute.

“We wanted to make a tactical change”, said Wondo after the game. “We wanted to add another guy in the midfield. Coach (Stahre) talked to me about that, it’s the role he asked me to play. Going forward (you) try to take that the best you can.”

Both teams were without the services of one of their players due to serving one game suspensions. San Jose’s Harold Cummings receiving a red card last week in the match against Philadelphia. Houston’s DaMarcus Beasley was served a red card in the 35th minute in a match against New England.

Vako is one of eight players in the MLS that has multiple goals and assists (2G, 2A).

Yellow fever! Things were chippy throughout the game as there were a combined 6 yellow cards called. Houston had four (Martinez, Elis, Adolfo Machado and Darwin Ceren) and the Quakes two (Wondolowski and Francois Affolter.

San Jose is now 1-2-1 at Avaya Stadium this season.

SJ Earthquakes leave Philly with a point, end match with a 1-1 draw against the Union

Photo: @SJEarthquakes

By Alexandra Evans

The San Jose Earthquakes (1-2-1) searched for a win against the Philadelphia Union (1-1-2) on Saturday after coming off of three consecutive losses against Sporting Kansas City, Club Léon, and New York City FC. Neither a win nor a loss occurred against Philadelphia as the game ended in a 1-1 draw at the Talen Energy Stadium Saturday.

The action was minimal in the first 45 minutes of the match, with the exception of a yellow card for the Union’s David Accam and a goal from Quakes’ Magnus Eriksson at the 37-minute mark, assisted by Danny Hoesen. The Union had nine shots compared to the Quakes’ four, and they had possession of the ball for 57% of the first half. Still, the Quakes were up 1-0.

Following the Quakes’ loss to NYCFC, Eriksson told an MLS reporter: “There are a lot of players in this locker room that hate to lose. Still, we’re going in the right direction.”

Yeferson Quintana received a yellow card 11 minutes into the second half (56-minute mark overall). Defender Shea Salinas replaced Joel Qwiberg for the Quakes at the 58-minute mark, as well as Ilsinho for David Accam on the Union at the 63rd. One minute later, Alejandro Bedoya scored the Union’s first goal (assisted by Fafa Picault) to tie the game 1-1.

After 90 minutes, the game ended with a score of 1-1. The Union heavily exceeded the Quakes in both shots (22 versus nine) and possession of the ball (63% versus 37%). Nonetheless, San Jose did not go home pointless.

Up Next: The Quakes return home at Avaya Stadium on Saturday, April 14 to host the Houston Dynamo. Kick off is at 7:15 p.m. PT.
