Cal In The Clutch: Bears trail by double digits but win in double overtime, 75-68

By Morris Phillips

BERKELEY, CA–Andre Kelly tallied 11 of California’s 18 overtime points, and the Bears escaped with a 75-68 double overtime win over Southern Utah at Haas Pavilion on Thursday.

Kelly finished with 29 points, 15 rebounds to pace Cal with John Knight III leading Southern Utah with 31 points. While Kelly heated up late to rescue Cal from an offensive standpoint, Knight was held scoreless over the final 3:41 of regulation, and the first 9 minutes, 32 seconds of the two overtime periods. When Knight was cooking–he had 12 of his 31 in the second half–the Thunderbirds built a 44-34 lead with 13:41 remaining, necessitating a furious run and come back by the Bears to force overtime.

Bears’ coach Mark Fox turned to 6’7″ freshman Sam Alajiki during this stretch to guard Knight. That prompted a 8-0 run to get Cal within two, and also got the Bears some relief from Knight’s hot shooting.

“We were having a real hard time with that kid’s strength,” Fox said of his decision to insert Alajiki. “Sam is a real strong and powerful guy, we went with that lineup and he did a great job.”

The Bears drew even at 46 with 8:48 remaining, and again at 51 on Kelly’s layup with 4:40 remaining. But they didn’t experience a lead in the second half until Grant Anticevich hit a jumper with 28 seconds left. Maizen Fausett followed with a layup to force overtime for Southern Utah. Joel Brown’s layup attempt at the buzzer was blocked by SUU’s Dre Marin.

Cal had not experienced an overtime game since February 2020 when they beat Utah 86-79. The Bears moved to 4-0 in overtime contests with Fox as their coach.

Southern Utah hadn’t endured a two-overtime game since their 2019 victory over Nebraska. Knight led the Thunderbirds in floor time with 49 minutes. Three other Southern Utah starters logged at least 44 minutes, and coach Todd Simon only got three points all evening from his bench.

Kelly was a gametime decision due to an ankle injury, but he responded with 11 of 16 shooting from the floor. He also buried a 3-pointer with 34 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give Cal its biggest lead, 73-65.

Andre had a very productive night,” Fox said. “I still think he can play a lot better.”

Anticevich had 15 points, eight rebounds and Brown played a team-most 46 minutes. He had seven assists, five rebounds but struggled with his shot. Brown finished with four points on 1 of 7 shooting.

Southern Utah got 14 points, eight rebounds from Fausett and Tevian Jones had 11 points, five rebounds. Jones was 0 of 6 from three, part of a subpar team effort from distance in which SUU missed 22 of 27 three attempts.

The Bears continue competition in the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off in Florida on November 22 where they will meet No. 24 Florida. The Gators won easily on Thursday, defeating Milwaukee 81-45.

Sharks Fall 4-1 to Blues, Ending Blues Losing Streak

The San Jose Sharks lost 4-1 to the St. Louis Blues Thursday. The Blues got goals from Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou, and two from Brandon Saad. Ville Husso made 26 saves for the win. Jonathan Dahlen scored for San Jose and James Reimer made 44 saves in the loss.

For the second time in four games, the Sharks had zero power play opportunities. After the game, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner said:

“I thought when we started getting back into the game, and we were trading chances a little bit, we took a terrible penalty, 200 feet away from our net and they scored. It’s 1-0, now we’re playing a little bit of catch up. It just seemed we couldn’t get a power play call. You know, I was whining a little bit there ’cause I’d had three or four there that I thought could have been a power play.”

Jacob Middleton and Robert Bortuzzo dropped the gloves off the opening face-off, starting the game off with some energy.

Logan Couture appeared to have scored the first goal at 8:21 of the game but it was called back because Jasper Weatherby was offside.

Brandon Saad scored the only first period goal, on the power play 10:35 minutes in. Ryan O’Reilly’s shot from the face-off circle went under Reimer and drifted into the blue paint. Saad had his stick ready to nudge it over the line. O’Reilly and David Perron got the assists.

Along with the one-goal lead at the end of the first period, the Blues also led in shots 16-13 and face-off wins at 62%. The Sharks penalty kill gave up six shots to the Blues power play.

Robert Thomas made it 2-0 for th Blues 1:35 into the second period. Pavel Buchnevich caught a pass from Scott Perunovich on the goal line, then sent it over to Thomas who was just below the hash marks. Thomas’s shot slipped by Reimer on the blocker side.

Jonathan Dahlen scored for the Sharks at 8:16. Timo Meier won a battle for the puck below the goal line and shot a pass to the front of the net. Dahlen was on the spot to push it in.

In a three-on-two, Brandon Saad scored his second of the game at 10:17. Oskar Sundqvist made a backhand pass from one circle to the other and Saad shot it in while Reimer was still trying to get across. Assists went to Sundqvist and Ivan Barbashev.

The Blues out-shot the Sharks again, this time 19-8, though the Sharks improved in the face-off circle to 53%. The Blues had two power plays to the Sharks’ none, and their power play managed four shots on goal.

Jordan Kyrou made it 4-1 1:09 into the third period. David Perron’s cross-ice pass from the d-zone found Kyrou flying through the neutral zone. Kyrou took the shot from the top of the circle and beat Reimer on the far side.

The Blues had a single power play in the third period, and again the Sharks had none. The Sharks penalty kill gave up three shots. The Blues also out-shot the Sharks in the third period, 13-6. The Sharks won 62% of the third period face-offs.

The Sharks next play on Saturday, back in San Jose against the Washington Capitals at 7:30 PM PT.

Fourth Quarter Onslaught Win One For Warriors 104-89; Cavs now one game above .500 after loss

Fourth Quarter Onslaught Wins One For the Warriors 104-89

By Barbara Mason

After a convincing win against the Brooklyn Nets Tuesday night, the Warriors (13-2 ) continued their road trip in Cleveland taking on the (9-8) Cavaliers and their winning ways with their second win on this current road trip 104-89.

This game could not have been any closer with the Cavaliers totally dominating on the glass. The Cavs led after one quarter 29-27. At the half Cleveland still held the lead albeit a slim one, but a lead nonetheless 54-51.

The Warriors came out sluggish in the first quarter and the Cavaliers outshot them from downtown. It is true that Cleveland is playing much better basketball but the rebounding by Golden State was not very good.

After two quarters Stephen Curry was 4-7 on three pointers and had 15 points while off the bench Nemanja Bjelica had 16 points. It was Bjelica to the rescue because for the most part it was Curry alone who was scoring for the starters. Darius Garland had the high score for Cleveland with 18 points.

Despite being known for being a fast break team, the Warriors only had five. They would have to do a better job rebounding in the second half as well as making better choices in their shot making.

Many times after an outstanding win teams come out sluggish in their next game. Mid-way through the third quarter the Cavs were completely boxing the Warriors out and the Warriors were not defending the rim.

Golden State found themselves trailing with under four minutes left in the quarter 74-65. Second chance points were 19-2 in favor of Cleveland. After three quarters the Cavs had extended their lead 81-68.

In the fourth quarter Curry found his three and the Curry Flurry was heating up with a lot of ground to make up. Golden State tied the game at 81 with Andrew Wiggins coming alive. It was a 15-0 run for the Warriors in the fourth quarter. The Warriors were making the Cavs work hard offensively. Golden State had finally taken the lead 90-86 with just over six minutes left in the game.

From down thirteen to up thirteen the Warriors had flipped the fourth quarter with 1:24 left in the game. Golden State was going to win an improbable game. It was ugly for three quarters and amazing in the fourth.

Cleveland had no answers to the Warrior onslaught. Golden State did absolutely everything right in the final quarter when it really mattered. The final was 104-89 in a game where the Warriors were completely outplayed in three quarters.

Curry finished with 40, and Bjelica with 14 points off the bench. The Cavaliers did everything possible to win this game through three quarters. They fell apart in the fourth quarter letting the Warriors walk away with the win.

Tomorrow afternoon the Warriors will be taking on the Detroit Pistons. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM PST.

On Headline Sports with Jerry Feitelberg:

#1 Jerry, the San Francisco Giants signing of Brandon Belt for one more year at $18.4 million is something the Giants are glad to get settled on. Belt had such a great 2021 at the bat and in the second half of the season and was key for the Giants push to get to post season.

#2 Jerry, San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler did what many didn’t think he could do when he first came to San Francisco and that’s win a Manager of the Year Award his chief accomplishment winning 107 games in one season surpassing what former Giant manager Dusty Baker did in 1993.

#3 The San Francisco 49ers shocked and upset the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football 31-10. You couldn’t recognize the 49ers after they had lost four straight games and came into this game and took control in the first half with a 21-7 lead later to blow the Rams out including two Jimmie Ward interceptions and a return.

#4 The Las Vegas Raiders after winning two straight dropped two straight most recently to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football by a landslide 41-14 how much would you say the drop in performance is alluded to the Henry Ruggs and Damon Arnette crisis and do you think things could carry over into this Sunday against Cincinnati.

#5 The Golden State Warriors picked up their 12th win against two loses on Tuesday night in Brooklyn against the Nets 117-99. The Warriors Stephen Curry didn’t score 50 but ended up leading the Warriors in scoring with 37 points former Warrior and current Net Kevin Durant finished with a season low in scoring 19 points.

#6 Jerry, I know you have covered a number of Big Games for us and this one is no exception in terms of excitement for both the Cal Bears (3-6) and the Stanford Cardinal (3-7) and no matter where they are in the Pac 12 it’s always a great turn out and good TV ratings. Kansas City Chiefs running back Darrel Williams (31) catches a touchdown pass in the second half as Las Vegas Raiders safety Johnathan Abram (24) defends at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas Sun Nov 14, 2021 (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Rich Perez:

#1 What a way for the Kansas City Chiefs (6-4) to turn things around with a big win over the Las Vegas Raiders (5-4) on Sunday Night Football 41-14 and Chiefs quarterback Pat Mahomes got all the time he needed to throw the ball for five touchdowns.

#2 This was the third time for Mahomes to throw over 400 yards and five touchdowns since he was drafted in 2017 and became the first player have both of them without throwing an interception.

#3 Meanwhile the Raiders just simply looked like they were going empty handed it just seemed no matter what the defense did the Chiefs just found ways to break through the Chiefs never let up on scoring throughout the game.

#4 Former Raider wide receiver Henry Ruggs III failed to take an alcohol test on Wed Nov 17th as ordered by the court Las Vegas Judge Suzan Baucum ordered Ruggs back in court. Ruggs had been under house arrest he is waiting for his preliminary for felony DUI causing death and other serious charges. Ruggs attorney David Chesnoff told Baucum there was something wrong with the testing equipment. Baucum told Chesnoff it didn’t matter. Ruggs could get confinement in Las Vegas jail for missing the test as strict guidelines were made in order for Ruggs to get house arrest.

#5 The Raiders host the Cincinnati Bengals (5-4), the Raiders are coming off two straight loses and the Bengals have lost their last two games likewise. In their last game last Sunday the Cleveland Browns upended the Bengals 41-16. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow threw 28-40 for 282 yards, and two interceptions. Thats Amaury’s News and Commentary: MLB Owners and Players headed to another work stoppage; Contract expires Dec 1st

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred (left) and Tony Clark MLB Players Association Executive Director (right) seen in file photo during the 2017 World Baseball Classic. Will both sides get a happy medium worked out before the CBA expires on Dec 1, 2021 before the owners lock out the players (file photo by Bleed Cubbie Blue)

MLB Owners and Players headed to another Work Stoppage

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Major League Baseball and the Players Union have to renegotiate a new CBA agreement. The current one expires December 1 and if by December 2 there is no agreement, it is expected the owners will lock out the players. So here we go again in the never ending saga of players and owners relationships like the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s, like Cats and Dogs, like Democrats and Republicans. This time key issues include arbitration rules, the luxury tax threshold, the minimum contract and a team salary floor. Negotiations seem to be headed in the wrong direction.

If there is no new agreement by this December 2nd, there will be a freeze on:

1-All transactions/trades

2-Above includes all free agent signings

3-Depending how long, potential cancellation of games and even the whole season.

4-No Winter Meetings in Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, scheduled for this Dec 5-9.

What is the CBA: A collective bargaining agreement (CBA) is a written legal contract between an employer and a union representing the employees. The CBA is the result of an extensive negotiation process between the parties regarding topics such as wages, hours, and terms and conditions of employment. The CBA has covered a period of five years. The current agreement was ratified in December 2016, so they have to work on a new one.

The first CBA was from 1968 to 1969. This was the first Collective Bargaining Agreement in all professional sports. Marvin Miller (recently inducted into MLB Hall of Fame) was the pioneer heading the Players Association. It was not easy but Mr. Miller was a very skillful negotiator and understood the economy of the game, the structure, and that the players needed representation.MLB was the first professional league in the country with such arrangement between players and owners,

Before the first game of the 2021 World Series Commissioner Robert Manfred was in attendance and spoke about the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement)that is to be re-negotiated next month and could affect the 2022 season.

It’s hard to characterize progress,” Manfred said. “Progress is you go in the room, you’re having conversations, and people are continuing to talk. It doesn’t move in any measurable way that I’ve ever figured out, and I’ve done it a long time. The most important point is I know our clubs are 100 percent committed to the idea that they want an agreement by Dec. 1.

The last time baseball had a labor stoppage was the 1994-95 strike. That wiped out one-third of the season and the entire postseason (including the World Series) shortened the season to 144 games. It took a few years after that, apathy among fans when baseball started to come back in 1998. Do you remember the Mark McGwire vs. Sammy Sosa home run race? Yes, that was 1998.

That two-players brought back the interest for the Boys of Summer among the millions of aficionados that follow the game. Next came 2002, when the game came close to a strike, but a deal was reached August 30 and the full season was completed including the World Series. That 2002 World Series where the Angels beat the Giants in seven games.

To put all of this in simple language, the main issue here is about economic issues, plainly m o n e y. It is like any other business because although we call it a game, it is a big business in the billions of dollars. And of course, owners want more, players want more, some owners will like to limit the cost so they can increase their financial gains. There is a lot of money in this business, like many would say “it is a battle between millionaires vs. billionaires”, something most of us never have to worry about.

Labor problems are not the only issue facing the game, this is what Whitey Herzog the second-oldest Hall of Famer living together with Willie Mays (both 90 years young) recently said “The state of the game in baseball is about as bad as I’ve ever seen it,” Herzog began. “It’s all strikeouts and home runs and a high number of pitches.”

“And too many four-hour games, he said, especially during the postseason. “And then, the Commissioner (Rob Manfred), who’s never worn a jockstrap, has all these rules … and the way every manager is using his bullpen now … out of 54 outs every night, you’ve got about 22 strikeouts between the two teams and ten walks. So you’ve got 32 guys every night that doesn’t hit the baseball,” said Herzog

History: Lockouts, strikes, work stoppages in these seasons: 1972, 1973, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1985, 1990 and 1994. About: Pension dispute, salary cap, salary arbitration. Free agency, free agency compensation. We can rejoice that baseball has experienced 27 years of Peace, from 1994 to 2021. Can we keep this peace or are they headed to war again?

If no agreement is reached by December 2, 2021, M.L.B could enact a lockout to freeze transactions. Spring training is to begin in February, with the 2022 regular season scheduled to start on March 31. Nobody really knows what will happen, it could last until early February when all 30 teams report to Spring Training, that is just my take on this, there is way too much money involved to cancel the season “suicide”. Your opinion as a fan is as good as anybody’s.

Let’s hope for the best, but these things are unpredictable. May I be the first to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and a Happy New Year.

Barracuda comeback from two goal deficit to upend Condors 4-3

San Jose Barracuda and Bakersfield Condors faced off at SAP Center in San Jose on Wed Nov 17, 2021 (photo by San Jose Barracuda)

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE—Scott Reedy picked a great time to have his first career multi-goal game.

Reedy scored the game’s final two goals as the San Jose Barracuda rallied for three unanswered goals in a 4-3 comeback victory over the Bakersfield Condors on Wednesday evening at SAP Center.

San Jose has won two games in a row. Bakersfield had its two game winning streak snapped.

Reedy scored the game winning goal with 9:51 remaining in the third period. Moments before Reedy’s heroics, Bakersfield failed to capitalize on an two-on-one odd man rush.

San Jose produced a counter attack where Mark Alt found Jayden Halbgewachs at the red line. Halbgewachs threw a pass over to Reedy, who just jumped onto the ice during a line change, at the Condors blueline. Reedy skated in from the left wing and wired a wrist shot top shelf into the far corner for his team leading sixth goal of the season.

San Jose (5-4-1-0) drew first blood early in the first period on the power play. Noah Gregor fed a pass from the point down to Reedy, who quickly found Joachim Blichfeld just to the right of the crease where he tapped home the puck into an open net for a tic-tac-toe goal, his second of the season at the 3:13 mark.

Gregor went over the double digit mark in points (11) with the secondary assist.

Bakersfield (6-5-1-1) responded with two even strength goals 22 seconds apart just over two minutes later.

Vincent Desharnais sent in a shot that bounced off the pads of ‘Cuda goalie Zachary Sawchenko over to Brad Malone, who cleaned up the rebound for his team leading sixth goal of the season at the 5:17 mark.

Then Graham McPhee was camped out in front of the crease when he redirected a shot from the point by Philip Broberg past Sawchenko for his second goal of the season at the 5:39 mark.

Bakersfield scored its third unanswered goal thanks to a Barracuda turnover. Artemi Kniazev ran inadvertently into his own defenseman Nicolas Meloche and was tripped up as he was trying to skate out of his own zone. Cooper Marody collected the puck, his initial chance was stopped by Sawchenko. Marody jammed home his own rebound for his sixth goal of the season at the 13:58 mark.

San Jose cut the lead to a one goal deficit with its second power play goal late in the second period. Ryan Merkley found Blichfeld open in the right slot and the Danish forward rifled home a wrist shot past Condors goalie Ilya Konovalov for his second goal of the contest and third goal of the season at the 14:14 mark.

Blichfeld has scored all three of his goals on the man advantage this season.

Reedy scored the equalizer just over two minutes later. Gregor entered the Condors zone down the left side. He sent a pass over to Reedy in the left slot, who sent a backhand shot over the glove of Konovalov and off the far post into the back of the net for his first goal of his two goal evening at the 16:24 mark.

Gregor, who got the secondary assist on Reedy’s first goal, had his first three assist game of his career and second three-point game of the season.

Sawchenko finished the night stopping 29 of the 32 shots he faced to earn his second win of the season. Konovalov made 19 saves on 23 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 2-for-4 on the power play. Bakersfield was 0-for-3.

Gregor extended his points streak to seven games.

Alt picked up his first point (the secondary assist on the Reedy’s game winning goal) in a Barracuda uniform.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Reedy 2) Gregor 3) Blichfeld

Edwards, Towns lead Wolves past Kings 107-97

Wed, November 17, 2021

Offensive firepower from Anthony Edwards and Ksrl-Anthony Towns, along with stingy defense, helped Minnesota defeat Sacramento 107-97 Wednesday night at Target Center in downtown Minneapolis.

It was the Kings’ fifth loss in their last six games.

Edwards scored 16 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter, and Towns added 22 points for the Timberwolves, who held the Kings to 36.6 percent shooting and forced 20 Sacramento turnovers.

Patrick Beverley added 14 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Wolves, who had lost eight of its last nine games. Edwards sank four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, laading Minnesota to its third win in 10 home games.

De’Aaron Fox paced the Kings with a game-high 28 points, followed by Buddy Hield’s 16 points off the bench. Richaun Holmes added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Sacramento coach Luke Walton wanted better rebounding and got it – the Kings grabbed a season-high 20 offensive boards, 13 of them in the first half resulting in 16 second-chance points.

Though both teams struggled offensively in the first half, Minnesota surged ahead in the third quarter when Towns scored the first seven points of the third quarter, sparking a 10-2 Wolves run. From there, Minnesota hit 13-of-20 field goals, including 4-pf-7 from 3-point range.

Hield tried to keep the Kings in the game with four 3s to pull Sacramento within one early in the fourth quarter. But Edwards went on his fourth-quarter tear to help the Timberwolves pull away.

The Kings return home on Friday to host the Toronto Raptors.
