Olympics and Politics -Other Countries Join Boycott — What else is New?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

As recently reported, here and in other media sports sites, the United States announced a boycott of the Winter Olympic Games to take place in Beijing, China next February, because of their continued record of human rights abuses. This is more of a symbolic boycott, as the US pledged not to send any government dignitaries or VIP.

Aside from that, US Athletes will travel and take part of the competition. So far these countries have done same as the US, no diplomat dignitaries, but their athletes will make the trip: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Lithuania and New Zealand and there might still be others.

A total of 95 countries are scheduled to be in Beijing for this winter Olympics. Many believe this is not really a serious boycott. So far no countries have prohibited their athletes from attending. Many decades ago, there was a big argument here in the United States about such controversy, to send or not to send the athletes because of political reasons.

It was in 1936. In 1936 the Berlin Olympic Games (summer) was much more than another big sporting event. Hitler used it for worldwide propaganda when his ambitions of world domination were just starting to form. A few years later (1939) the Nazis invaded Poland, then Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Yugoslavia and Greece. Obviously there was no boycott by the US. However, there was a lot of debate in the US if the country should send their athletes to Hitler’s Germany.

(The US didn’t declared war on Germany until after Pearl Harbor in 1941) Many US athletes believed the best way to defeat the Nazi’s was to beat them in athletic competition, others however, believe to participate was like sending an endorsement of Hitler. After a long debate in the country those that opposed the boycott won and the US sent their athletes to that historic Olympics. The rest is history.

There were many other times that countries have boycotted other countries. This is nothing new and there will be more boycotts, I am sure in the future to come. China has already blasted back at the US and other countries, like Communist governments usually do “they are right and the rest of the world is not”.

NBC owns the rights, and will carry the games; they know that anything that the Chinese government doesn’t like on the NBC feed it will be censored. That’s what they do, because when some of their own athletes in China criticize their government they “disappear”. Famous tennis star Peng Shuai, is a story currently developing.

Sometimes athletes speak against human rights violations, and that is fine, when it is done here in the US and other Democracies, but not in China or dictatorships where free speech is not allowed. Actually in Communist countries speech is allowed as long as you agree with those in power. Boston Celtics player Enes Kanter Freedom (Freedom, he added to his name after recently becoming a US Naturalized citizen).

He was born in Turkey and has made serious comments about that government and their abuses as well as China and their human rights abuses. It is too bad that other players in the NBA have been very quiet on that front.

China is a huge market for the NBA, and most players chose not to compromise their careers talking about China. Let’s say they like to keep selling their Nike shoes here, which are made there for pennies…

I hope for the very best to all athletes, US and from all countries, that will participate. But to be surprised about political implications during summer or Winter Olympics is to be totally disconnected with the world we are in.

Enjoy the Olympics, if you can.

Bengals Bashed: Cal gets a rare laugher in 72-46 win over Idaho State

By Morris Phillips

BERKELEY, CA–Defense wins championships, and it also wins December non-conference games against overmatched opponents.

Don’t leave home without it, or make yourself at home with it.

Cal’s 72-46 victory over Idaho State was all defense after halftime, as the Bears ran away from Idaho while limiting the visitors to five made baskets after the break.

“We know as disjointed as our roster has been with injury that offensively it’s going to take a while to develop some chemistry,” coach Mark Fox said. “But I really wanted us to play hard defensively, and I thought in the second half we really showed that.”

The Bears benefitted in a stretch of 12 consecutive ISU misses that allowed Cal to stretch their lead to 49-30 with 11 minutes remaining. Idaho State shot an uncompetitive 28 percent from the floor in dropping an eighth consecutive game after opening the season with a win over NAIA Eastern Oregon.

Fox jumbled his starting lineup by promoting Makale Foreman and Sam Alajiki at the expense of Kuany Kuany and Joel Brown. While Kuany is out while dealing with an ankle injury, Brown played his normal minutes as a reserve. But the biggest beneficiary may have been Lars Thiemann, who came up with a career-best 12 points, three rebounds and a block in 19 minutes of action. The 7’1″ center’s presence gave the Bears defense force, and offensively his points were part of Cal’s decisive 42-16 edge in points in the paint.

“When he comes into the game he’s always capable of that,” guard Jordan Shepherd said of Thiemann. “We see it every day in practice.”

Marsalis Roberson, the freshman from Bishop O’Dowd in Oakland, made his collegiate debut, playing a couple of minutes in each half.

Idaho State was led by Robert Ford III with 11 points. Tarik Cool played the most minutes, and put up 14 shot attempts, but he couldn’t get it going, finishing with eight. The Bengals were outrebounded 44-32.

“We are feeling pretty beat up right now,” coach Ryan Looney said. “It has been a tough stretch and there a lot of things we need to do better.”

Andre Kelly had 12 points for Cal, and Grant Anticevich put up 10 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Shepherd had 11 points on 4 of 10 shooting.

The Bears have won five, consecutive home games and at 5-5 will be afforded an opportunity to move above. 500 when Santa Clara visits Haas Pavilion on Saturday evening.

Sacramento Kings guard De’Aaron Fox (5) takes a shot against Orlando Magic center Mo Bamba at the Golden One Center in Sacramento on Wed Dec 8, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Wednesday night. The Kings were well-rested, having played two games last week. The last game the Kings played was on Saturday when they took on the Los Angeles Clippers in Sacramento.

The Kings managed to take care of the Clippers by beating them by the final of 104-99. The Kings welcomed in the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. The Magic didn’t come in a very successful team in 2021 with a record of 5-20. The Kings handled the Magic at home by the final 142-130.

Wednesday game recap: The Kings were set to take on the Orlando Magic on Wednesday at 7 PM PST in Sacramento.

In the first quarter, It wasn’t a spotless start to the game from either team. The Kings and Magic both struggled on the defensive end of the floor. The Kings scored 38 points compared to the Magic with 36 points in the first quarter. The Magic were hitting their three-point shots, which was the biggest reason they were in the game.

However, the Kings were saved on offense by a few three-point makes from Marvin Bagley towards the end of the quarter. Cole Anthony started the offense for the Magic with 8 points as his counterpart De’Aaron Fox had nine for the Kings.

It was more of the same for the Kings in the second quarter. The Kings defense didn’t step it up much in the second quarter. The Kings woes on the defensive end reared their ugly head towards the end of the half.

The Kings had built a bit of a lead as the half was winding down only to see the Magic come back and make it a 70-67 game going into Halftime. Yes, the Kings had the lead, but it wasn’t pretty. The Kings outscored the Magic 32-31 in the second quarter.

The Kings were led by De’Aaron Fox in the first half, who scored 13 points. Cole Anthony led the Magic in the first half with 16 points. The Kings would look to close the game in the second half by tightening up the defensive end of the floor. The Kings entered the game with a seven-point spread against the Magic, according to Vegas.

In the third quarter, the Kings would grow the lead back up. The Kings defense slightly improved from the first half holding the Magic to 25 points in the third, the lowest total of the game so far. On the other hand, the Kings scored 34 points in the third to expand their lead to 104-92, heading into the final 12 minutes.

The Kings managed to hold off the Magic in the fourth quarter and win the game 142-130. The Kings and the Magic played terrible defense in the last quarter, in which the Kings and Magic both scored 38 points.

However, the Kings scored at least 30 points each quarter and held the Magic under 30 points in the third quarter. That was the difference in the game. De’Aaron Fox led the way for the Kings putting up 33 points in 33 minutes of action. Counterpart Cole Anthony led the Magic with 33 points in 35 minutes on the court. The Kings are 5-3 since firing head coach Luke Walton and replacing him with interim coach Alvin Gentry.

Up Next: The Kings head out on the road to take on the Charlotte Hornets on Friday at 4 PM PST.

Warriors beat Blazers by ten 104-94; Curry needs 10 more 3 pointers to pass Allen

Stephen Curry (30) Golden State Warriors guard takes a three jump shot is now ten away from tying Ray Allen’s NBA record for the most three pointers here Curry takes a shot against the Portland Trailblazers on Wed Dec 8, 2021 at the Chase Center in San Francisco (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

Stephen Curry finished with six shots from downtown now ten shots away from the impending record. Otto Porter Jr. had a great game with 15 points off the bench which spelled trouble for the visiting Portland Trail Blazers as the Golden State Warriors come up with a 102-94 win in San Francisco Wednesday night.

Wednesday night the Warriors (21-4) welcomed the Trail Blazers (11-15) to Chase Center. The crowd was hoping for another Golden State win but even more than another win, the crowd was hoping to see Curry break Ray Allen’s record. Currently he is shooting 5.5 3-pointers per game through 20 games. In order to pass Allen Curry needs ten more from downtown.

The Warriors got off to a great start in the first quarter leading 26-23 as the clock ran out on the opening quarter. By halftime Golden State had a slim 47-45 lead. The Trail Blazers had not led in this game although they remained within striking distance for most of the first half. Curry got four shots closer to the anticipated record shooting 4 of 12 from long in the first two quarters.

Known for heating up in the second half, Golden State is most dangerous in the third and fourth quarters. By the fourth quarter the Warriors normally wear their opponents out. The Warriors did extend their lead to 76-66 in the third quarter although the Trail Blazers continued to hang around.

As we have seen so often, Golden State began their fourth quarter surge extending their lead to double digits. Otto Porter Jr. was having an outstanding third and fourth quarter. It was a sloppy finish but the Warriors pulled out the win 104-94 despite the fact that this was their worst shooting night of the year.

Curry would finish the game with 22. Jordan Poole with 20 and Porter with 15 points. The Warriors now head out on the road for five games.

Saturday night the Warriors will be in Philadelphia to take on the 76ers. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30.

Sharks Beat Back Flames 5-3, Hertl Scores Hat Trick

San Jose Sharks left wing Jasper Weatherby (26) screens Calgary Flames goaltender Dan Vladar (80) to allow a goal by center Tomas Hertl to score in the first period at SAP Center on Tue Dec 7, 2021 (AP News photo)

SAN JOSE– The San Jose Sharks came back from a two goal defecit to win 5-3 against the Calgary Flames Tuesday. The Sharks got goals from Erik Karlsson and Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl scored a hat trick. Logan Couture passed the 600 point mark in his NHL career. Adin Hill, making his fourth start in a row, made 40 saves for the win. Dillon Dube, Johnny Gaudreau and Adam Ruzicka scored for the Flames. Dan Vladar made 22 saves in the loss.

Tomas Hertl’s three goals and one in the previous game signal a shift from a 10 game dry spell, during which he had just two goals. Of this sudden productivity, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner said:

“Yeah, he was frustrated for a couple weeks, a few weeks getting chances but not putting it in. We had a talk the other day and he just, good players do that. He’s a heck of a player in this league I think. You knew it was going to come, just like [Bonino] a few weeks ago, we were talking about it. You don’t play that long in the league and have that much success and the switch goes off.”

Calgary’s Dillon Dube started the scoring just 97 seconds into the game. Milan Lucic made a quick pass from the outside to the slot and the puck went off of Dube and also Mario Ferraro right in front of the net. Lucic got the assist.

Tomas Hertl tied the game with his tenth of the season, on a power play at 8:58. Alexander Barabanov made a pass from one face-off circle to Hertl in the other. Hertl took the shot off the pass and put it in the top corner on the short side. Barabanov and Brent Burns got the assists.

Johnny Gaudreau scored his tenth of the season, giving Calgary the lead back at 11:55. Matthew Tkachuk made a nifty between-the legs pass from almost behind the net. The pass found Gaudreau on the doorstepTkachuk and Elias Lindholm got the assists.

Adam Ruzicka scored the first of his career at 4:31 of the second period. Christopher Tanev’s shot created a rebound and Ruzicka kept after it until he could push it around Hill’s skate and in. Tanev and Brad Richardson got the assists.

Erik Karlsson cut the lead down with a break-away goal as he came out of the penalty box. Logan Couture spotted him and got the puck up to him as the penalty expired. Assists went to Couture and Jasper Weatherby.

Logan Couture tipped an Erik Karlsson shot, tying the game again on the power play at 14:27. Jonathan Dahlen got the secondary assist.

Tomas Hertl gave the Sharks a lead with his second of the night at 18:10. Alexander Barabanov’s shot created a rebound close to the goal line. Hertl was there to lift it in.

At 6:29 of the third period, Lane Pederson went into the boards by the bench, head-first, with some help from Milan Lucic. Pederson returned from the dressing room very quickly and no penalty was assessed.

Calgary pulled their goaltender for the extra skater with a little under two minutes left in the third. Tomas Hertl scored his third of the night into the empty net at 18:10.

With just under ten seconds left in the game, Ferraro’s clearing attempt hit referee Michael Markovic in the face and he needed help to leave the ice.

The Flames beat the Sharks in the face-off circle in 59% of the draws. They out-shot the Sharks 43-27. The Sharks power play had two chances and scored on both. Their penalty kill gave up three shots and produced three short-handed shots.

The Sharks next play on Thursday in San Jose against the Minnesota Wild at 7:30 PM PT.

Froese’s hat trick powers Heat in 10-1 route of the Barracuda

The San Jose Barracuda sat on the bench expressionless at the Stockton Arena as they find out there is no mercy rule in hockey against the Stockton Heat on Tue Dec 7, 2021 (photo from San Jose Barracuda)

by Marko Ukalovic

STOCKTON, Calif, —There are games where you want to set the tape on fire and never watch again.

In what was their worst performance of the season, the San Jose Barracuda suffered a severe beating from the Stockton Heat in a 10-1 loss on Tuesday evening at Stockton Arena.

San Jose have lost six out of its last seven games. Stockton have won three games in a row and lead the Pacific Division with 30 points.

Stockton (14-2-2-0) jumped out to an early lead in the first period when they scored two goals 14 seconds apart.

Glenn Gawdin found Matthew Phillips along the right wing. Phillips skated back into the middle and lifted a backhander past ‘Cuda goalie Zachary Sawchenko for his sixth goal of the season at the 8:35 mark.

Then former ‘Cuda defenseman Nick DeSimone fired a shot from the right point that was redirected by Gawdin past Sawchenko for his sixth goal of the season at the 8:49 mark.

The Heat scored its third unanswered goal of the period when a counterattack led to a two-on-one odd man rush. Rookie sensation Jacob Pelletier centered a pass from the end line over to Gawdin who beat Sawchenko with a one-timer for his second goal of the game and seventh of the season at the 15:43 mark.

San Jose (6-10-1-0) had chances to get on the board, including a breakaway from Jayden Halbgewachs in the first five minutes of the period, but Heat goalie Dustin Wolf Adam Werner kept San Jose off the board in the opening frame.

Stockton out shot San Jose 12-11 in the first period.

The Heat picked up in the second period where they left off in the first by scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period.

Connor Mackey sent a cross ice pass to a streaking Eetu Tuulola who beat Sawchenko with a wrist shot to the short side for his third goal of the season at the 6:49 mark.

Less than two minutes later, Stockton extended its lead to 5-0. Ilya Solovyov fed a pass back up to the point where Byron Froese ripped a slap shot past Sawchenko for his fifth goal of the season at the 8:18 mark.

That ended the night for Sawchenko (3-5-0) as he gave up five goals on 18 shots. Zachary Emond finished the game for San Jose.

It did nothing to spark the Barracuda as they played lifeless the rest of the game with multiple turnovers and taking frustration penalties that kept them for establishing a forecheck.

The Heat’s onslaught continued with its sixth straight unanswered goal just 55 seconds later. Gawdin set up Matthew Phillips with a backdoor centering pass that Phillips buried a one-timer past Emond for his seventh goal of the season at the 9:13 mark.

Stockton kept pouring it on with a power play late in the middle frame. Mackey sent in a shot from the point and Froese cleaned up the rebound for his second goal of the game and sixth goal of the season for the Heat captain at the 18:23 mark.

The Heat made it 8-0 early in the third period. Martin Pospisil fired a shot in on net and Connor Zary poked in the rebound for his third goal of the season at the 4:14 mark.

San Jose spoiled the shutout bid for Wolf when Dilion Hamaliuk sent a cross ice pass to Montana Onyebuchi in the left slot and the rookie defenseman rifled a wrist shot past Wolf for his first career AHL goal at the 11:08 mark.

Froese completed his hat trick when he was camped out in front of the crease and redirected Andy Welinski’s shot from the point past Emond for his second power play goal and eighth goal of the season at the 15:05 mark.

Gawdin finished his own hat trick when the ‘Cuda turned the puck right over to his stick and his wrist shot into an empty net for the Heat’s third power play goal that completed the scoring at the 17:04 mark.

Wolf (10-0-2) finished the game stopping 24 of the 25 shots he faced to earn the victory and still hasn’t lost in regulation this season. Emond made 16 saves on 21 shots in mop-up duty.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 0-for-3 on the power play. Stockton was 3-for-5.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Gawdin 2) Froese 3) Phillips
