Aces hire Becky Hammon as new head coach

Becky Hammon, who has been on the San Antonio Spurs bench since 2014, is the first full-time, paid female assistant coach in the NBA (Jasen Vinlove – USA TODAY Sports)

By Shawn McCullough

The Las Vegas Aces have a new head coach.

Former San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon was named the Aces head coach.

Hammon was with the Spurs as a coach since 2014, but will now be a head coach for the first time.

“I am so excited to return to the WNBA and grateful for Mark Davis and Nikki Fargas having a vision for me to lead the Aces,” said Hammon. “This is where I come from, and I wouldn’t be me without the W. I’m thrilled to be able to give back and lead this next group of women.”

Hammon will replace Bill Laimbeer, who was the Aces head coach from 2018 through 2021.  Laimbeer will remain within the organization to help build the 2022 roster.

“This is the best possible scenario for the Las Vegas Aces,” said Laimbeer. “It takes a tremendous amount of energy to be a head coach. In Becky, the team now has somebody who can serve in that role for the long term, which is great for both the players and the franchise.”

Hammon played for both the New York Liberty and the San Antonio Stars in the WNBA.

NOTE: The Aces also added basketball legend Jennifer Azzi as the team’s chief business development officer.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Brown says he had ankle injury and had to leave game; 49ers Lance good enough but Shanahan will stay with Garoppolo

Former Tampa Bay wide receiver Antonio Brown shirted and unshirted was the talk of the town after throwing his uniform away during the Bucs game at MetLife in New Jersey against the New York Jets on Sun Jan 2, 2022 (photo from the Mirrior)

Curry scored only nine points against the Miami Heat on Tuesday a season low. Klay Thompson is expected back in the line up very soon according to head coach Steve Kerr.

#4 Amaury, the New York Yankees are considering bringing in Oakland A’s veteran third baseman Matt Chapman. That move is very possible as Chapman will be seeking a multi year deal and a significant raise and playing on the biggest stage in baseball will provide that kind of money.

#5 Several free MLB agents are seeking to sign on new ball clubs, the Braves Freddie Freeman says that he’s interested working things out and returning to the Braves, former Giant Kris Bryant has had interest from the Mets, Padres, or Angels, Trevor Story is looking for ball club to sign with and could fetch for around $100 million.

#6 Ken Rosenthal legendary writer and TV analyst for Fox Sports and the Athletic and formerly with MLB Network did not get his contract renewed by MLB Network which Rosenthal said was due to articles that were critical of MLB and MLB commissioner Rob Manfred regarding MLB how the 2020 season was handled and some of the changes in baseball. One thing for sure members of the media and the members of the BBWAA will have Rosenthal’s back and it might be a war between the media and Manfred.

Poole Leads Warriors To Win Over Heat 115-108

Poole Leads Warriors To Win Over Heat 115-108

By Barbara Mason

Just when we were all wondering when we would see Draymond Green back in the lineup, we got our answer Monday night when the Warriors (29-7) took on the Miami Heat (23-15). The Warriors would need him against a very tough Miami team .The Warriors would overcome, the final was 115-108.

Golden State would play a near perfect first quarter leading 33-25. They had shot 57% and had six from downtown. In the second quarter the Warriors led by as much as 13 points but the Heat would dissolve that lead and tie up the game mid-way through the quarter. Miami had scored nine unanswered points. After two quarters the Warriors took back the lead 59-54 at halftime.

Green was spectacular in the half with 10 assists. Andrew Wiggins led the pack with 16 points followed by Jordan Poole with 14 points. Golden State had 8 shots from downtown and only had four turnovers.

The Heat had a bit of a issue in the first quarter on defense. The most pressing issue for Miami were the turnovers which the Warriors took full advantage of. Some were uncharacteristic while some were due to the Warriors defense.

This is what hurt the Heat the most. What had kept them in this game was the play of Jimmy Butler who scored 12 points and Kyle Lowry with 11 points. The three point shooting really got on track for Miami in the second quarter. The Heat are also short-handed as are many teams across the league. They have five out with injury and five out on Covid protocol.

The Warriors would have a lot of work to do in the second half. As the third quarter began to wind down the Heat had a terrible loss as Jimmy Butler rolled his right ankle and was helped to the Miami locker room.

Butler was a huge part of keeping the Heat in this game and had shot 22 points just prior to his injury. After three quarters the Warriors led 89-82. With the Warriors doing so much so well it was a testament to the great play by the Heat to even stay close.

With 5:36 remaining in the fourth quarter the Warriors were holding onto a 106-100 lead trying to put away the Heat who had been stubborn all quarter in the absence of Butler and refused to go away. In the final four minutes of this game the Warriors kept coming up with stop after stop while the Golden State offense had come unglued. Poole had an amazing run with 32 points as they completely closed out the Heat.

The Warriors really cashed in by using Stephen Curry as a decoy in this game. Golden State has plenty of power when it comes to shooting from downtown so this strategy worked out well for the Warriors. The defense led by Green was superior and the offensive play of the Warriors was amazing. Poole with 32 points, Wiggins with 22, and Payton with 14 led the team.

The Warriors will be taking on the New Orleans Pelicans Thursday at Smoothie King Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris Phillips: Cal offense shreds ASU in 24 point win Sunday night; Undefeated USC comes calling on Thursday night at Haas

The Arizona Sun Devils Enoch Boakye (14) goes for a finger roll shot over the Cal Bears Grant Anticevich (15) at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley on Sun Jan 2, 2022 (photo by Arizona State University Athletic Dept)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris it wasn’t even a contest last night at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley as the Cal Bears (9-5) leveled the ASU Sun Devils (5-8) 74-50 Sunday night. Nothing but offense for the Bears as the Sun Devils couldn’t do anything to get into this contest in the 24 point landslide.

#2 Morris talk a little about the handy work of forward Lars Thiemann 12 minutes, four rebounds and seven points.

#3 The Bears Jordan Shepherd led in scoring with 16 points followed by Andre Kelly 13 points, and Grant Anticevich with ten points. The Bears distributed the ball well and had a great inside game where head coach Mark Fox was happy with the work done inside the paint.

#4 Taking a look at that first half it just simply wasn’t even a contest as Cal just dominated the Sun Devils 41-23. The Bears had their way on both sides of the ball stopping ASU on any chance to come close and defending the shot. On offense the ball was distributed well and Cal had no problem getting their shots to fall.

#5 Up next for the Bears the USC Trojans (13-0) on Thu Jan 6th. The Trojans who have not lost a game all season just had their way in their last game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-6) in both halves of their game in a 67-53 win. The Bears got a big offensive win Sunday night against ASU but USC could be a whole different matter at Haas on Thursday night.

#2 The Warriors contest in Denver was called off due to the Nuggets having a lack of players below eight eligible players and the Warriors needless to say were none too happy to come all the way out get on the floor taking some practice shots and get notice that the game was canceled last Thursday.

#3 Barbara, with that postponed game in mind the Warriors take off from Denver Thursday night and get into Utah for Saturday night’s battle and come back from behind and inspite of it all Warrior head coach Steve Kerr has been proud how they’ve been able to hold it together.

Bedeviled in Berkeley: Arizona State sees their mastery of Cal end in a 74-50 defeat at Haas Pavilion

By Morris Phillips

BERKELEY, CA–Arizona State figured to be stuck in traffic dealing with the nationally-ranked Bruins and Trojans in Los Angeles this weekend. Instead, the Sun Devils surfaced in serene, socially distanced Haas Pavilion and got their forks handed to them in an very unceremonious manner by the Cal Bears.

Oh, the irony? Yes, the irony.

The suddenly ascendant Bears put together their best 40 minutes of basketball this season, and throttled ASU, 74-50, bringing an end to the Sun Devils’ seven-game win streak in the series between the schools.

“We did defend well, we did play very well on offense, and we did rebound it pretty well,” coach Mark Fox said. “So we did a lot a really good things and it’s a complete performance for us, but not as complete as it could have been. But you know what, our team competed well and I was really proud of them for that.”

Competitive? Complete performance? Suddenly the Bears–undefeated at home, and miraculously avoiding the pitfalls of COVID protocols–aren’t the club picked to finish last in the Pac-12. Instead they’re credible defensively, and meticulously prepared. Arizona State found out right away as Cal zoomed to a 41-23 halftime lead fueled by a 7-0 advantage in made 3-pointers. Fox hated that his Bears squandered some free throw opportunities early, missing five of their first seven, but the disparity beyond the arc was undeniable.

“It was the difference in the ballgame,” Fox said.

Cal suffered some hiccups in the first five minutes of the second half, but took off again after that, maintaining their big lead and unleashing some new weapons in the process.

Lars Thiemann, literally Cal’s biggest project, showed out by hanging near the rim and making himself available for easy shot attempts. The seven-footer routinely fumbled as many passes as he caught previously. But hard work has paid off. Fox spoke of the hours Thiemann has put in, not to mention the reminders the Cal coaching staff provided during breaks in Sunday’s game. Thiemann came up with all seven of his points in the second half, allowing Cal to ultimately pad their lead, while giving them a clear, size advantage on the smallish Sun Devils.

Sam Alajiki, who previously wowed the Bears coaching staff with his defensive presence, also contributed to the Bears’ hot stretch. Alajiki entered the game, and immediately canned a three, stretching Cal’s lead to 52-33 with 11:45 remaining.

The Bears were led by Jordan Shepherd with 16 points, Andre Kelly added 13, and Grant Anticevich had 10 points, 10 rebounds. Arizona State got 17 points from sophomore D.J. Horn, but no other ASU player tallied more than nine as their horrible 32 percent shooting from the floor doomed the visitors from the start.

“We know it’s not one guy who’s going to do it all for us,” Kelly said. “If one guy is not necessarily having his best night then we have a good deep team so a lot of people can step up and make good plays,” Kelly said.

Cal shot 51 percent from the floor and outrebounded ASU 38-32. The Bears stayed undefeated at home, and improved to 9-5, 2-1 in the Pac-12 with the win. And now the Bears get their shot at the top ten Southern California schools both of whom have been impacted by COVID and will visit Berkeley during a compacted schedule of three games in five days.

“We need four times the number of people to show up,” Fox said while acknowledging the 2,974 fans that showed up Sunday, including the coach’s wife and daughter who were pressed into duty as staffers to aid the hastily arranged home game.

Cal hosts USC on Thursday at 8pm, and UCLA on Saturday at 5pm at Haas Pavilion.

Heat shut down Barracuda in 4-1 win

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — The Stockton Heat enacted revenge on the San Jose Barracuda in a 4-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at SAP Center.

San Jose has two out of its past three games. Stockton have won five out of its last six. The Barracuda handed the Heat their first regulation on home ice back on New Year’s Eve.

Adin Hill made his first career start for the Barracuda. Hill just came off the Covid-19 protocol, and the San Jose Sharks sent him down for a conditioning assignment.

Stockton (19-3-2-1) drew first blood early in the first period. A turnover by Artemi Kniazev was picked up by former ‘Cuda forward Alex Gallant who snapped home a wrist shot top shelf past Hill for his first goal of the season at the 2:04 mark.

The Heat doubled its lead on the power play halfway through the opening frame. Martin Pospisil sent a shot from the point initially saved by Hill but Luke Philp cleaned up the rebound for his eighth goal of the season.

The aftermath set off ‘Cuda head coach Roy Sommer who frantically went over by the Stockton bench and started yelling at them. The referees ejected both head coaches after the hostile exchange of words.

Stockton scored their third unanswered goal in the second period. Matthew Phillips sent a home run pass up the ice that sprung Jacob Pelletier on a breakaway. Pelletier skated in a snapped home a wrist shot top shelf past Hill for his team leading 11th goal of the season at the 7:52 mark.

Pelletier has a team high 28 points on the season.

San Jose (11-14-1-0) scored its only goal of the game halfway through the third period. Adam Raska skated in on Heat goalie Dustin Wolf, who made the initial save. Scott Reedy cashed in the rebound for his team leading 14th goal of the season at the 10:10 mark.

Stockton iced the game with an empty net goal with 1:05 remaining. Justin Kirkland’s fourth goal of the season snapped a 19-game goal less draught for the Heat left winger.

Wolf finished the game stopping 33 out of the 34 shots to earn his league best 15th victory of the season and 10th in a row. Hill made 33 saves on 36 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 0-for-5 on the power play. Stockton was 1-for-6.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Wolf 2) Reedy 3) Pelletier

UP NEXT: San Jose continues its five-game homestand on Friday 1/7 as they host the Henderson Silver Knights at 7:00pm at SAP Center.

Kings deliver again edge Heat 115-113 at Golden One; Sac has won three of last four games

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Sunday afternoon for the first game of 2022. The Kings last played on Friday afternoon as they took on the Dallas Mavericks at home. On Friday, the Kings played a terrible game against the Mavericks that saw them lose 112-96.

It was summed up post-game by Kings head coach Alvin Gentry who said, “If anyone needs me, I’ll be at home drinking.” It was a rough game that the Kings showed no effort. On Sunday, the Kings would look to clean up the action on the court as they welcomed in the Miami heat at 3 PM PST. The Kings defeated the Heat at home 115-113 on Sunday afternoon.

It was a weird first quarter in Sacramento. Neither team seemed like they could find a rhythm on the offensive end of the ball. However, the Kings did outscore the Heat 26-18 in the first quarter.

The Kings defense was playing well from the outset, and the Heat also were not hitting their shots. The Kings could take advantage of this in the first quarter and hoped to keep up the defensive pressure as the game continued.

In the second quarter, the defense crumbled. The Kings allowed the Heat to go off for 39 points in the second quarter and put the Kings lead in jeopardy. The Kings countered with 35 points of their own which preserved the lead.

It was a defensive nightmare for the Kings, almost giving up 40 points in a quarter. The saving grace for the Kings was that Miami didn’t play much defense either. The Kings would go into halftime with a 61-57 lead. Damian Jones led the way for the Kings in the first half with 14 points. Kyle Lowry led the Heat with 14 first-half points.

It wasn’t a complete meltdown for the Kings in the third quarter. Nonetheless, the third quarter was not kind to the Kings. While avoiding the breakdown, the Kings were outscored in the third quarter, 33-29.

However, the Kings went on a run towards the end of the quarter to avoid going into the fourth down. The score would be tied 90-90 going into the final 12 minutes of action against the Heat in Sacramento.

In the fourth quarter, the game was up for grabs. Both teams traded baskets until the score was 113-113 with 26.6 seconds to go. De’Aaron Fox would be fouled on a drive and make both of his free throws to make it 115-113.

The Heat had one final play with 6.2 seconds left. Jimmy Butler drove to the rim and missed his floater, and the Kings would win the game as time expired 115-113. It was a gritty win for the Kings, who had ample opportunity to implode.

Instead, they held their own and ended the Heat’s five-game winning streak. De’Aaron Fox played a significant role for the Kings down the stretch and finished the game with 24 points. Buddy Hield added 26 points for the Kings during the win. Tyler Herro led the way for the Heat in defeat as he scored 22 points along with Omer Yurtseven.

Up Next: The Kings will travel to Los Angeles on Tuesday to take on the Lakers at 7:30 PM PST.

Lance shines in his start in 49ers 23-7 win

by Marko Ukalovic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. —With all eyes on him and his team’s playoff hopes hinging on his performance, Trey Lance did what he needed to do.

After a slow first half, the San Francisco 49er’s rookie quarterback threw for two touchdowns in the second half to help deliver a 23-7 victory over the Houston Texans in the final home game of the season for San Francisco on Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium.

San Francisco (9-7) remained as the sixth seed in the NFC and control their own destiny with a win and they’re in scenario for the final week of the regular season.

Lance, who made his first home start of his career and second start of the season, didn’t get off to the hot start that most people were expecting. The Niners offense was able to generate only three first downs on their first four possessions.

Houston (4-12) intercepted Lance on the first play of San Francisco’s fourth possession as he was trying to find tight end George Kittle on the left side, but the pass was underthrown as Desmond King stepped underneath and returned it to their own 20-yard line.

The Texans responded with its best drive of the game. They went 80 yards on 14 plays that was capped off with an eight-yard touchdown reception by Brandin Cooks when rookie quarterback David Mills found him open down the middle in the back of the endzone.

Both offenses played so poorly in the first half that the Texans offense was the first to reach the red zone with four minutes remaining in the first half.

Lance settled down near the end of the first half when he drove the 49ers down to the Texans’ 19-yard line after two completions to Brandon Aiyuk and one to Deebo Samuel. Robbie Gould got San Francisco on the board with a 37-yard field goal with 38 second left in the second quarter.

In the second half San Francisco’s defense dominated the trenches and shutout Houston for the final 30 minutes.

Marcell Harris intercepted Mills on the Texans’ first possession of the second half and Houston’s offense would not be able to recover the rest of the game.

San Francisco only needed four plays to cash in Harris’ pick. Lance found Elijah Mitchell out in the flat for an eight-yard touchdown reception to give the 49ers their first lead of the game at 10-7 with 5:53 left in the third quarter. The drive was aided by a 37-yard passing interference penalty on Terrance Mitchell.

“He played well enough for them to win today,” said Houston Texans head coach David Culley when asked about Lance. “He gave us a chance by giving us that one pick. The thing about him is that he’s very mobile and keeps plays alive.”

The closest Houston came to scoring in the second half was when Ka’imi Fairbairn 45-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right with 12:08 left in the fourth quarter.

The Niners took advantage of the good field position off of Fairbairn’s miss. Once again, they only needed four plays to paydirt. On a play-action pass, Lance found Samuel deep down the field on a corner post route. Samuel shook off the attempted tackle and danced his way down the sideline for his sixth receiving touchdown of the season to give San Francisco a commanding 17-7 lead with 9:56 left to play.

“That big play at the end was huge,” said San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan regarding Lance’s performance. “For the most part, he made some pretty good decisions running the ball.”

San Francisco sent Houston packing when they received the ball with under seven minutes remaining in the game. Two big plays, the first a spectacular one-hand catch by Kittle for 28 yards and then a Mitchell 37-yard rush to the Texan’s six-yard line help set up Gould’s 27-yard field goal to seal the deal.

Mitchell became the all-time rookie rushing leader for the 49ers when he rushed for 119 yards on 21 carries. Mitchell’s 878 rushing yard broke the mark set by Vic Washington (811) in 1971 with 14 appearances, despite missing the past three games due to an injury in just 10 appearances.

Lance finished 16 of 23 for 249 yards and two touchdowns and one interception with a QB rating of 116.0. Aiyuk led the Niners in receiving with four catches for 94 yards.

“Yeah, I think I got into a better rhythm,” Lance said. “Probably settled in after that two-minute drive. I think that is when I started talking to (quarterbacks coach) Rich (Scangarello) and (head coach) Kyle (Shanahan) and kind of let them know that I felt settled.”

Mills, who had a rough game, finished 21 of 32 for 163 yards with one touchdown and one interception. His QB rating was just 75.4.

Cooks led the Texans in receiving with seven catches for 66 yards and one touchdown. Running back Rex Burkhead had a quiet game with 47 yards on 16 carries.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 5-for-13 on third down situations. Houston was 5-for-15.

The Niners outgained the Texans 416-222 in total yardage and had more first downs 19-15.

UP NEXT: San Francisco travel down to Los Angeles to take on the Rams in the regular season finale on Sunday 1/9 at 1:25pm.
