San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa: Would the Sharks really move Hertl and Meier ?

San Jose Sharks’ Tomas Hertl, left, is ecstatic after scoring the game wining goal in overtime against the Philadelphia Flyers on Sat Jan 8, 2022 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Hertl is looking for a contract extension when the second half of the season resumes on Mon Feb 14, 2022 (AP News file photo)

On the Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 Mary Lisa it’s really hard to believe that the San Jose Sharks would even consider moving either Tomas Hertl or Timo Meier, Hertl is looking for an extension and could be moved for assets. Meier could be considered for the rebuild or also moved for assets.

#2 Meier has $6 million cap hit to his $10 million dollars remaining on the last year of his contract. After the season he’s had it shouldn’t be a surprise if they sign him for another multiple year deal and it would be a shock if he is traded elsewhere?

#3 Hertl who is in the top six for centers in the NHL would be hard to replace and during the All Star break he was not thinking about his future with the Sharks after taking time off in Hawaii with his family.

#4 The Sharks will be coming off a three game losing streak when they return to SAP Center on Monday night against the Edmonton Oilers. Sharks head coach Bob Boughner certainly would like to get things turned around with that first win against the Oilers.

#5 Evander Kane returns to San Jose and will be playing his former teammates what kind of a reception do you see Kane getting and will it be a physical game or competitive game upon his return?

Not Tyrese!: Haliburton trade shocks Sacramento, Wolves clock the Kings, 134-114

By Morris Phillips

SACRAMENTO–Kings’ fans already knew they have to patient and resilient, but they certainly didn’t know bidding adieu to their brightest, young star was the harsh addition to that reality.

Their message to the Kings’ organization:

It’s a lot (more) to ask.

Tyrese Haliburton was dealt on Tuesday to Indiana along with Buddy Hield and Tristan Thompson for Domantas Sabonis, Justin Holiday, Jeremy Lamb and a second-round pick in 2023.

Throughout the league, the reaction was the same, why move Haliburton, a fan favorite that was a steal as the 12th pick in the 2020 Draft, who had posted career bests in points (38) and assists (17) in separate games in the last two weeks?

Well, the faltering Kings had to move someone, and no other Sacramento player possessed Haliburton’s trade value, reference the fact the move fetched an All-Star in Sabonis, and two quality, veteran additions to the team’s backcourt, which was desperate for a defensive upgrade, which they got.

In addition, Hield’s declining numbers didn’t match his sizeable contract, which has two years remaining, and the 25-year old Sabonis has a far friendlier deal that has him also signed for two more seasons.

But Haliburton is viewed as the most promising player in the deal, and that tilts it towards the Pacers.

The Kings took the floor Tuesday without the three traded players, but also without Richaun Holmes due to personal reasons, and Marvin Bagley, who has a sprained ankle. That left the hosts without much of defensive presence, and the Wolves pounced with 73 first half points, and 22 made threes in the game. The Kings trailed by 11 at the half, and showed life early in the third when they cut the deficit to four, but the Wolves seized control for good at that juncture.

Karl-Anthony Towns led Minnesota with 24 points, and Malik Beasley was spectacular off the bench with 21, consisting of seven made threes. Naz Reid added 12, and Jordan McLaughlin added 11, as did Taurean Prince.

Ironically, Beasley has also been the subject of trade speculation with the trade deadline approaching on Thursday at 12:00pm. His play and his words afterwards displayed his focus.

“This is my sixth year in the league, and I’ve been traded before,” he said. “The only thing you can do is control what you can control. … I’d rather be here, but it’s a business, so you can never know what can happen.”

The Kings got 29 from De’Aaron Fox and 21 from Harrison Barnes. Rebounding (49-38 for the Wolves) hurt the Kings, as did their 19 turnovers.

The Kings have dropped 14 of 18 and sit in 13th place in the Western Conference.

The clubs get a quick turnaround and face each other again on Wednesday at the Golden 1 Center.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Did politics play into the low ratings at the Beijing Olympics

Performers at the opening ceremonies at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics on Fri Feb 4, 2022 in Beijing (AP News photo)

On Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast:

#1 If the barometer of comparing the 1988 Olympics in Calgary TV ratings which was a 20.1 million a record as the standard the 2022. The Beijing Winter Olympic ratings have come out with just a share of 16 million and is considered a low for the Olympics opening.

#2 The Beijing games are well below the 2018 Olympic games in South Korea by 43 percent. Thursday the Olympics came in with 7.7 million also comparing that with the Russian Olympics in 2014 with a 20.02 million rating.

#3 There are two factors at play that could be the reasons for low TV ratings with a large number of countries not sending diplomats to the Olympics in protest against the genocide of the Uyghurs people who are ethnic minority and who are located in the northwest part of China.

#4 The other issues are substandard living conditions for the athletes due to high Covid 19 restrictions the Chinese government is mandating Olympic athletes to stay in restricted housing only to come out when it’s time to compete.

#5 Olympic athletes have started using burner phones and lap top computers to avoid getting hacked or eve’s dropped on. TV crews have been ordered to do “closed loops” no shots of buildings, mountains, recognizable background shots.

Warriors Get Past Scrappy Thunder 110-98

Warriors Get Past The Scrappy Thunder 110-98

By Barbara Mason

Monday night the Golden State Warriors (41-13) took on the OKC Thunder (17-36) at Paycom Center. OKC is a very young tenacious team that despite their record has had some nice wins lately beating the Trail Blazers twice, and the Mavericks. The Warriors held their own and picked up a win against the feisty Thunder 110-98 at Paycom Arena in Oklahoma City.

Reported to be out on Sunday night, Lugentz Dort did play in this game which was great news for the Thunder. The Warriors got Otto Porter Jr. and Andre Iguodala back for this game so some great news for Golden State as well.

The Thunder started the first quarter with some outstanding defense. At one point in the quarter the Warriors were shooting at 30% and committing some careless turnovers.

Down by eight points mid-way through the quarter the Warriors had pulled to within three points to end the quarter 23-20. OKC’s excellent defense in the quarter was overshadowed by poor shooting. The Warriors were really lacking from downtown going 3 of 14 in the quarter.

The Warriors took the lead to start the second quarter. After a rather sluggish start Golden State really began to pick up the intensity. Their offense was a lot more efficient in the second quarter and the three’s began to fall.

With the half winding down Golden State was beginning to wear down the Thunder, forcing turnovers and denying shots from inside and outside. At the half the Warriors led by double digits 56-46. Andrew Wiggins led the Warriors with 13 points and Jonathan Kuminga had 11 off the bench.

The Warriors did extend their lead in the third quarter 85-72. The Thunder were scoring far too many points off Warriors turnovers. The 13 point lead was not at all a comfortable lead and Golden State would have to hunker down to win this one.

This game went right down to the wire. The Thunder were down by five points with three minutes left in the game. The Warriors had three turnovers in a row in the final minutes which could have spelled disaster. Stephen and Klay Thompson scored monster three’s which put this game away 110-98.

A lot of credit to the scrappy Thunder who played a great defensive game. They just didn’t have enough fire power to take this game. Thompson had the high score with 21 points and Curry with 18. They had seven shots from downtown between them and closed this game out for Golden State. Kuminga had another great game with 16 points off the bench.

For a minute the Thunder had a glimmer of a possible win but it faded in the final minutes of this game. It was a nervous game but in the end the Warriors had won their ninth game in a row.

“We were just trying to hang on. I was glad to see Klay hit those shots. It’s great to have Klay back,” said Coach Kerr after the game. “I thought Jordan Poole played a fantastic game. JK is getting better every day,” he said. “It wasn’t a great night defensively.

Wednesday night the Warriors are off to play the Utah Jazz. Tipoff is scheduled for 7;00 PM.

Sunday, February 6, 2022

In a game plagued by sloppy play, the AFC hung on for a 41-35 win over the NFC in the annual Pro Bowl, played in Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The all-star teams from both conferences combined for eight turnovers, seven of them on interceptions. Six of the miscues occurred in the first half.

Justin Herbert was voted most outstanding player of the game. The Los Angeles Chargers’ signalcaller completed 7 of 11 passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns.

The AFC pulled away in the second half by scoring 13 straight points, opening a 20-point lead. An interception thrown by Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers provided the NFC with a chance to cut its deficit to six.

But on the AFC’s next drive, Mac Jones of New England completed a fourth-down pass to Najee Harris of Pittsburgh to maintain a game-ending drive.

Neither team was successful running the ball. The NFC ran eight times for one net yard, while the AFC gained 52 rushing yards on 21 attempts.

The AFC and NFC threw a combined 92 passes. The only player to throw a pass that wasn’t intercepted was Stefon Diggs of Buffalo, who also ran for a touchdown.

There were two pick-6’s – one by Darius Leonard of Indianapolis and the other by Antoine Winfield Jr. of Tampa Bay. Leonard intercepted Kyler Murray of Arizona for his TD, while Winfield picked off Patrick Mahomes of Kansas City to get his score.

Murray was 18 of 27 for 160 yards and three touchdowns. Jones finished 16 of 32 for 112 yards, one touchdown and one interception. No field goals were attempted.

The winning share for the AFC players is $80,000 per player, while the NFC players each received $40,000.

Quick Wash: Stanford bullies UW, 87-69, gets respite ahead of UCLA clash

By Morris Phillips

STANFORD, CA–Tight scheduling doesn’t normally equate to crisp gameplans and preparedness, but it did for Stanford on Sunday.

In the midst of a stretch of eight games in 17 days, the Cardinal looked completely focused on taking apart Washington, which they did in an 87-69 win at Maples Pavilion.

The wire-to-wire win started with a 15-2 burst, and reversed a dismal performance at Seattle on January 15 in which the Cardinal trailed the Huskies by 18 points at halftime.

In the rematch, Stanford’s size and unselfishness carried them offensively, and a savvy defensive plan shut down the visitors, especially early on when the game was decided.

“The gameplan was we’re going to impose our will on them,” James Keefe said. “And a lot of that involved blown up ball screens. Applying a lot of pressure to guys who are shooters but aren’t as comfortable dribbling the ball or playing on the ground.”

Washington came in with confidence, winners of seven of nine, and they saw that eroded by Stanford’s big guys busting through UW’s signature zone and creating high percentage scoring opportunities in the paint. Keefe was a beneficiary of that, contributing 17 points, five rebounds as was Jaden Delaire, who led Stanford with 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the floor.

Washington’s biggest push of the afternoon came early, a 14-2 response to Stanford’s initial run that brought them within 17-16, but Stanford answered with an 8-0 surge. The Cardinal weren’t threatened after that, and led 46-33 at the break.

Terrell Brown Jr., the Pac-12’s leading scorer, impressed with 30 points, seven rebounds and six assists, but he didn’t get much help. Reserve P.J. Fuller had 11 in 34 minutes off the bench, but he misfired on seven of his ten shots from the floor.

The Huskies’ starters not named Brown shot 5 for 22 combined, and that included two misses from Daejon Davis, the Stanford transfer, who departed five minutes in with an apparent shoulder injury.

The Cardinal get a visit from UCLA on Tuesday, in a rescheduled game that was postponed due to COVID issues. The Bruins’ fitness for that one will be closely watched after they fell in Tempe to Arizona State, 87-84 in three overtimes on Saturday night.

The Cardinal weren’t tested over the entire 40 minutes on Sunday afternoon, and 14 saw action, with none playing more than the 30 minutes afforded Michael O’Connell. That could provide an advantage on Tuesday, which Stanford will need. The first meeting between the clubs on January 29 in Los Angeles saw the Cardinal lose by 23 and shoot a season-worst 27 percent from the floor.
