#3 It was Shepherd who took a jump shot 1:39 to tie the game at 61 up on a goaltending call with 18 seconds remaining. Bears Breakthrough: Cal wins at Oregon State, 63-61, ends 10-game losing streak

By Morris Phillips

Throughout a difficult losing skid, and after an injury sidelined their leading scoring for the rest of the season, the Cal Bears kept it together. The payoff for all that focus and belief came Wednesday night.

Maurice Calloo’s improbable miss at the rim that would have sent the game into overtime, allowed the Bears to escape with a 63-61 win in Corvallis over Oregon State. Cal broke their 10-game losing streak, and won for the first time on the road this season.

“These young men weren’t winning but they were functioning like winners so you had to know things would eventually turn around if we did the right thing,” coach Mark Fox said.

The Bears (10-15, 3-11) trailed by one at the half, and never led by more than four points. That led them to a suspenseful conclusion in which Jordan Shepherd’s shot was goaltended with 18 seconds remaining, breaking a 61-61 tie.

Andre Kelly, Cal’s leading scorer who injured January 29 in a loss to USC was declared lost for the season before the game when medical tests on his ankle revealed significant damage. That again forced Fox to rethink his lineups, and depend on a smaller core of performers.

Against OSU, Grant Anticevich, Jalen Celestine, Joel Brown and Shepherd each logged at least 35 minutes, and Cal had to weather their own uneven play at points due to their reliance on the tighter rotation.

Calloo’s 3-pointer with 11:43 remaining put OSU up 47-42, but Cal responded with an 11-2 run to lead 53-49 with 6:47 left.

“We weren’t good defensively to start the second half, but once we strung together some stops, I felt like we settled in,” Fox said.

The Bears took advantage of Oregon State on the glass with 14 offensive rebounds leading to 17 points. That along with 10 steals offset Cal’s 36 percent shooting that was too poor to allow them to sustain any momentum.

Shepherd led Cal with 15 points, and Anticevich had 13 points, eight rebounds. Brown contributed nine points, nine rebounds and seven assists along with a stellar defensive job on OSU’s Jarod Lucas, who scored just two points after halftime.

“I’m super-proud of Joel. He really competed well tonight and I thought he was probably our MVP,” Fox said of Brown. “We had a lot of guys chip in and play well but he was the difference in this one.”

Last season the Beavers (3-18, 1-10) defeated Cal three times, and then the Bears were forced to watch the hosts improbable run, as OSU won the Pac-12 Tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. But those standout performers that led Oregon State have endured a rough season that’s landed them in last place in the conference.

Warith Alatishe was limited to 24 minutes on Wednesday and finished with seven points, seven rebounds while clearly favoring a previous knee injury.

Calloo led Oregon State with 18 points but missed 10 of his 16 shots from the field.

The Bears travel to Eugene on Saturday to face the Oregon Ducks at 1:00pm.

Jeremy Kahn Giants beat writer and podcaster passes away at 50

By Sports Radio Service overnight Staff

What can you say or how can you begin to say about San Francisco Giants beat writer Jeremy Kahn who gave and gave and gave of himself in the media field that he literally gave all that he could give. He was generous to a fault. Our Jeremy Kahn has left us at the tender age of 50.

The shock that of his departure was sudden on Wed Feb 9, 2022 when most of us learned at 12 noon of his passing by the Facebook posting by former KCBS sports anchor Joe Salvatore and his dear friend and broadcast partner Michelle Richardson.

Jeremy worked hard wore many hats, he was a San Francisco Giants beat writer and radio talent for Sports Radio Service he started in 2001 and was a man of many talents broadcasting and writing post game reports covering Stanford Cardinal, Oakland A’s, Oakland Raiders and the Giants.

As time went on Jeremy just covered Giants baseball as he took on many other duties that included working on the Pac 12 Network TV and the TV production for the Golden State Warriors.

Jeremy enjoyed doing remotes for our radio podcasts as he and the Sports Radio Service crew dined in some of the finest restaurants to some of the best hole in the wall restaurants that dished some great food while we promoted the restaurants for the proprietors in the Bay Area and Sacramento.

Jeremy always looked forward to each remote broadcast and poured his heart and knowledge into editorial and commentary. Jeremy was always giving it his all and it was well known that he gave a kidney to a relative he wanted to give part of his life for a life, that was Jeremy. He was always thinking and talking about his father and his late mother and ways he could help them and family members out.

One of Jeremy’s favorite assignments was to work road games. Jeremy would select certain games on the Giants road schedule. His favorite places to work Giants games were PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Nationals Park in Washington DC, Citi Park and Yankee Stadium in New York.

Jeremy was a connoisseur of sorts cooking his own recipes and proudly showing his concoctions on social media. We are grateful to Michelle Richardson who was Jeremy’s broadcast partner both Jeremy and Michelle started doing talks shows in college and later on the professional level and Jeremy loved to talk about his favorite college Michigan and it’s football team.

Our entire staff to man and woman has expressed shock about Jeremy’s sudden loss but also shared many memories with a great talent and a very generous human being who gave of himself to his family and family of broadcasters. The San Francisco Giants plan to pay a tribute to Jeremy at their home opener Fri April 9th at Oracle Park when the Giants host the Milwaukee Brewers.

Kings win third in five games defeat Timberwolves 132-119

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Anthony Edwards (1) shoots over Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes (40) at the Golden One Center in Sacramento on Wed Feb 9, 2022 (AP News photo)

By Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Wednesday night at Golden One Center. The Kings were fresh off their biggest acquisition since they landed Harrison Barnes in free agency.

On Monday, The Sacramento Kings (21-26) traded away Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield, and Triston Thompson to the Indiana Pacers in a deal headlined by Domantas Sabonis coming to Sacramento Kings (29-26). It was bitter sweet for the Kings who were excited to get a game changer like Sabonis who is also a two time all star.

On the other hand, the Kings will miss young up and coming Tyrese as well as Sacramento main stay Buddy Hield. Only time will tell how the trade works out. In the Kings last game they lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Sacramento 134-114.

On Wednesday the Kings would look to flip the script and beat the Timberwolves in the second night of a back to back. The Kings on Wednesday beat the Timberwolves by the final of 132-119.

In the first quarter, the Kings came out looking flat. The Kings offense appeared a bit scattered. The new additions to the Kings lineup didn’t looked a bit disjointed in the first quarter. The Timberwolves outscored the Kings 37-31 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, it was a different story for the Kings. The Kings had a fire lit under theme after the first quarter.

The Kings exploded in the second quarter on the offensive end. The Kings scored an impressive 42 points in the second quarter to go from behind to take the lead going into halftime. The Timberwolves offense cooled from their first quarter start and only scored 27 points in the second half.

The Kings took a 71-64 lead into halftime as they looked to get back in the win column. Harrison Barnes led the way for the Kings with 18 points as Anthony Edwards scored 20 for the Timberwolves.

In the third quarter, it was all Minnesota again. The Kings didn’t completely meltdown but they didn’t play any defense. The Timberwolves manage to regain the lead after outscoring the Kings 37-28 in the third quarter.

The Timberwolves couldn’t miss in the quarter as the Kings defense seemed to regress a bit. If the Kings wanted to win the game they would need to tighten up the defensive end of the floor. The Kings entered the final quarter down 101-99.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings sealed their comeback by defeating the Timberwolves by the final of 132-119. The Kings showed great heart on the defensive end as they held the Timberwolves to only 18 points.

It wasn’t a great defensive game for the kings but they managed to put the clamps down when it mattered. Harrison Barnes led the Kings with 30 points in the game.

Newcomer Domantas Sabonis scored 22 points in his debut for the Kings. The Timberwolves were led by Di’Angelo Russell who dropped 29 points. It was a great feel good win for the Kings who are entering a new era of Kings basketball.

Up Next: The Kings head out in the road to take on the Washington Wizards on Saturday at 4 PM PST. The Kings will only play one more game at home for the next nearly four weeks.

Warriors Winning Streak Snapped by Utah 111-85

Utah Jazz forward Royce O’Neale tries to put a stop against Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, right, in Utah on Wed Feb 9, 2022 (AP News photo)

Warriors Winning Streak Snapped by Utah 111-85

By Barbara Mason

Wednesday night the Golden State Warriors (41-14) took on the Utah Jazz (34-21) in Salt Lake City. Both teams are riding on winning streaks, the Jazz with three wins in a row and Golden State looking for their tenth win in a row. The Jazz came ready and shutdown Golden State’s offense for the 111-85 win.

Their last game on the road, New Year’s Day in Salt Lake City was a barnburner. The Warriors won that game 123-116 despite a horrific third quarter. The Jazz scored 41 points in that quarter while the Warriors had only 22 points. It was In the final minutes of that game that Stephen Curry and Andre Iguodala made crucial shots from downtown plus three free throws from Curry.

Tonight’s game features two teams that excel in shots from outside. It will be a Curry vs Donovan Mitchell match-up and promises to be some exciting ball.

Rudy Gobert did not play tonight for the Jazz. The Warriors were missing Andre Iguodala, Klay Thompson, and Nemanja Bjelica. Kevon Looney started this game being a game-time decision.

The Warriors started off the first quarter with a couple of three’s from Otto Porter and Andrew Wiggins. It was a nice start for Golden State taking a 13-0 lead to begin this game. It would just be a matter of time before the Jazz got going.

Mid-way through the quarter the Warriors led 15-2. Utah put an end to the Warriors surge and by the end of the quarter the Warriors led 31-30. The Jazz had shot five from downtown and Golden State with six.

Mental errors, empty possessions and turnovers in the second quarter did the Warriors no favors. The Jazz will make you pay every time you commit those turnovers and fouls. After two quarters the Jazz led 55-49. The 10-2 on turnovers gave the Jazz a real edge. The Warriors were struggling against the Jazz defense.

After tying up this game in the third quarter at 58, the Jazz began to make a move. More turnovers and empty possessions gave the Jazz a 79-65 lead after three quarters. The Warriors went 35% shooting which would hardly get the job done against Utah.

The Jazz offense went off in the third quarter and took it into the fourth. The Warriors had cooled off since the first quarter and just could not turn it back around.

The Warriors were not getting anything in the paint and Utah was not missing anything in the fourth quarter. Golden State’s winning streak would come to an end. The good news for the Warriors was the simple fact that they had gone 9-1 without Draymond Green. The Warriors have an amazing defense right now without their ace.

The Warriors Jordan Poole finished the game with 18 points. Bojan Bogdanovic was the high for the Jazz with 23 points. Hassan Whiteside not only had nine points off the bench for Utah but also had 17 rebounds.

The Warriors were outplayed by the Jazz and had a real off night offensively. They were skunked. It happens and so now it is back home for a date with the Knicks. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow shakes fans hands after the Bengals advanced to Super Bowl LVI. The Bengals had defeated the Kansas City Chiefs on Sun Jan 30, 2022 in the AFC Championship. (AP News photo)

On the Super Bowl LVI podcast with Jessica:

#1 Jessica, the Cincinnati Bengals (13-7) coming into Sunday’s Super Bowl have won four out of their last five games wins that got them to the Super Bowl a lot of the credit has been going to quarterback Joe Burrow who has led the club into the red zone and executing the score.

#2 It’s been a long while since the Bengals have got to the Super Bowl the last time they were here was in 1988 and before that in 1982 both times they faced the San Francisco 49ers (12-8) and lost this Sunday they want to be able to hoist that trophy.

#3 Jessica in that last Bengals game for the AFC Championship they just edged one of the league’s best the Kansas City Chiefs (14-6) in a three point 27-24 win. A win that really demonstrates the poise of this team to get this far.

#4 The Los Angeles Rams are coming off a three game winning streak entering Super Bowl LVI this Sunday. They narrowly beat the 49ers 20-17 for the NFC Championship title. The Rams last Super Bowl appearance was in 2019 and are looking to capture a win in this Super Bowl.

Super Bowl LVI podcast with Tony Renteria: Rams feeling right at home for Sunday’s big game

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matt Stafford throws a first half pass against the San Francisco 49ers on Sun Jan 30, 2022 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles during the NFC Championship (AP News photo)

On the Super Bowl LVI podcast with Tony R:

#1 Tony, the Los Angeles Rams will feel right at home for this Super Bowl it’s the first time a team will be playing in their very own stadium for a Super Bowl. The closest that happened was when the San Francisco 49ers played at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto against the Miami Dolphins but it wasn’t their real stadium which was Candlestick Park at the time.

#2 Tony, the Cincinnati Bengals (13-7) coming into Sunday’s Super Bowl have won four out of their last five games wins that got them to the Super Bowl a lot of the credit has been going to quarterback Joe Burrow who has led the club into the red zone and executing the score.

Golden State Warriors podcast with David Zizmor: Thompson getting the splash headlines leading in scoring

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson (11) takes a shot over Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey (3) on Mon Feb 7, 2022 at Oklahoma City (AP News photo)

On the Warriors podcast with David:

#1 Dave it seem like Golden State Warriors (41-13) guard Klay Thompson has taken over the leaderboard of late he was the top scorer on Monday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder (17-36) with 21 points.

#2 Has it been by design that Thompson would get more looks and it seems like he hasn’t missed a beat since he’s returned.

#3 The Warriors tip off against the Utah Jazz (33-21) tonight in Salt Lake City. The Jazz have won three straight and defeated the New York Knicks (24-30) in their last game 113-104. How do you see this match up tonight in Utah.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa: Would the Sharks really move Hertl and Meier ?

San Jose Sharks’ Tomas Hertl, left, is ecstatic after scoring the game wining goal in overtime against the Philadelphia Flyers on Sat Jan 8, 2022 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Hertl is looking for a contract extension when the second half of the season resumes on Mon Feb 14, 2022 (AP News file photo)

On the Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 Mary Lisa it’s really hard to believe that the San Jose Sharks would even consider moving either Tomas Hertl or Timo Meier, Hertl is looking for an extension and could be moved for assets. Meier could be considered for the rebuild or also moved for assets.

#2 Meier has $6 million cap hit to his $10 million dollars remaining on the last year of his contract. After the season he’s had it shouldn’t be a surprise if they sign him for another multiple year deal and it would be a shock if he is traded elsewhere?

#3 Hertl who is in the top six for centers in the NHL would be hard to replace and during the All Star break he was not thinking about his future with the Sharks after taking time off in Hawaii with his family.

#4 The Sharks will be coming off a three game losing streak when they return to SAP Center on Monday night against the Edmonton Oilers. Sharks head coach Bob Boughner certainly would like to get things turned around with that first win against the Oilers.

#5 Evander Kane returns to San Jose and will be playing his former teammates what kind of a reception do you see Kane getting and will it be a physical game or competitive game upon his return?
